It was mere hours before I was to play a big Friday night set at Happy Tap. I put in a ton of prep work for it, so it was brutal news. In the Burning Man spirit, we made the best of it by putting up our sound system at home when we returned because my girlfriend said she really wanted to hear it, and she was so sweet to support me. So we turned our apartment into burner vibes, gathered a small audience, and I'm so glad we decided to throw a couple cameras up. We had so much fun with it and hope you do too.
Throw it on for your next party, workout, cleaning session, or just get wild and go dance somewhere in the sun.
Much love to everyone who supported, means so much to me.
I ended up getting a huge opportunity to play it at Beacon a couple weeks later. You can listen to and follow me on SoundCloud: soundcloud.com/amosrendao/halfogaea

The breakfall is a crucial falling skill for any movement discipline where there's a chance of ending up in a falling scenario where you're unable to disperse the impact with a rolling or redirecting movement.
There are many disciplines and art forms that cause bad habits from only training on mats or in controlled environments. For lightning quick falling reactions, you want simplicity, and you'll find that by using one technique for all surfaces whenever possible. If you want to use the breakfall technique that will also apply on hard surfaces like concrete and complex fall zones, this is the tutorial for you.

But seriously, there's no limit to your movement if you study it with the many intentions and feelings you have instead of staying within the walls created by strict definitions. Names and titles have there place, but for me, dance, parkour, martial arts, art du deplacement, freerunning, etc. are all one continuum. It's my mood, my intention, and the situations that I am presented with that determine what my body wants to do.
Don't train too hard and forget to play. Hope this entertains and inspires to stop and smell the roses here and there.

Over the years, I’ve had so many people tell me that these tutorials should be required viewing for gym owners, program designers, coaches, and especially practitioners.
At APEX Boulder, we tracked details of all injuries for over a decade while also collecting injury data from multiple APEX locations. Early on it became very clear to me that peel outs were causing the worst falls and injuries.
We updated our curriculum, gym rules, coaching program, etc. and saw a very large reduction in these falls. These tutorials are the basis for how we made those changes, and I hope they contribute to your training and/or movement school. The Peel Out: 1st Line of Defense (Awareness of Causes)Amos Rendao — Parkour Ukemi | WCT | Music2025-08-04 | The peel out is one of the gnarliest falls in parkour. Haven’t released a personal video for … 8 years?! haha And I made this video about 2 years ago but haven’t released it til now… [shakes head]
I think I’ve been resistant to make videos like these (only showing highlights and best takes) because parkour videos can often skew people's ideas in a way that makes parkour less accessible to those who may need it most. Without the hard work, good falling technique, the examples of us adapting to mistakes, etc. people can walk away believing this is incredibly dangerous and that we’ve just been lucky up until now.
So I made a second half that gives you a little glimpse into my training behind the finished product: the strength training, falling, the many attempts it sometimes takes to get something just right.
Please keep in mind that this isn’t what beginner training looks like, as I’ve been doing this for over a decade now, but your journey into parkour doesn’t have to start at the level of all the sensational videos you see out there. It starts with developing a basic relationship with the world around you through falling, crawling, jumping, balancing, all at ground level. I hope this video inspires, educates, and entertains :)
If you’re interested in learning parkour, my partners and I have crafted curriculum over the last 12 years of coaching. We’ve turned it into a structured, online course you can find at http://www.ParkourEDU.org/course/parkour-101

Endijs Miscenko goes for a really difficult precision (slightly blind and with vertical rails that don’t allow for a crane option) and undershoots it.
Bounce backs are a key Ukemi technique, but even more complicated and technically difficult when grabbing the ledge or bar is necessary as it is in this case.
To make matters even more complicated, he doesn’t have a flat surface to place his feet on in the bounce back catch, and it’s even an overhang so he let’s his body go to full hang in a very controlled manner.

As I usually say, this is not “Parkour Competition” this is “Obstacle Course Competition.” There are tons of benefits and reasons we do these, and specifically, a ton of function in the direction of Parkour Randori training.
You should not be training at heights at all unless you understand how to control your descent in all common falling scenarios. Clément Dumais shows us a great example of the backwards fall off a ledge. He isn't completely precise with guiding to a desired two foot landing, but uses an assisted dive roll to deal with the small over rotation. Don't neglect practicing this before training at heights!

The lateral roll (aka pencil roll) is an important piece of falling continuums that can result in broken arms and face to ground contact if you don't know how to execute them with very precise timing. Sid Mohorovich reacts to some complications with a well executed lateral roll on concrete.

Good awareness and execution as Cody Beltramo fits a dive roll into a tight space by landing his feet on the restricting wall.
I see this come up here and there where either you don't have a choice or your muscle memory chooses a roll when you don't have all the space you need. It's a good idea to do some roll practice into walls just to get the feel for it. Add this to your next training session :)

Falling on rails is a very common shape and so we should be drilling slip outs and how to enter the ground from various positions. Justin Clark does it just right by avoiding the direct shot to the front of his shin bone and then getting that foot out of there in order to execute an assisted dive roll.

Brandon Halpin has been teaching Ukemi and is our head instructor at APEX Movement Boulder, so it's no surprise he has good reactions on lock down when it comes to situations that could go really bad. He just told me that this fall felt super soft and I suspect some crossover to a breaking type purposeful suit casing of the body with extremely precise timing that creates a spring absorbing nature of the break fall at the cost of some surface area of leg/foot.
This is a great example of Ukemi for bar peel outs on the forward swing. He gets to one side along the meaty part of his body, arm out to the side (not under him), he keeps his neck tense to protect the head, and even if the force was too great, his head was just above the shoulder to act as cushion. It's awesome to see Brandon's focus on ukemi over the years pay off so that he can get up gracefully for continued training instead of a few months off with a broken limb.

Brandon Halpin is a master of control and he shows it training barefoot, but no one is invincible to the inevitable slips that come here and there. It's a rough descent, but he manages to control the fall before he gets to the ground. He even gets back up there and sticks it just afterwards :) Respect!

Paul Odvina has a slip during a wall flip, but does not join the ranks of all the nasty wall flip fails in the vacuum of cyberspace, instead he turns for a more ideal position to get a descent break fall. It's not textbook, but he at least doesn't trap his arm under him or hit his head, and as you can hear, he does a great job of spreading out the impact across more surface area with one solid clack.

Camilo Brokaw has a long history of studying martial arts as well as a good amount of time spent on Parkour Ukemi over the years, and it shows here as he walks away from a potentially devastating fall by turning it into a breakfall opportunity from 2 1/2 meters up.

Quick and controlled reactions from Charles Poujade from Bordeaux, France. He's visiting APEX Movement Boulder for the month. This is his 4th clip in the "Good examples of Ukemi" playlist [ youtube.com/watch?v=6q1w6iHRHcw&list=PLXxTsdF4OoOSxa2f5SDFHbe9J3obaUdAA ], he's starting to become a master.

Mason Fleet of the APEX Movement Pro Team is a brick house. This is not an uncommon sight to see. Here he reacts to an over rotated double kong with a rough dive roll variation, and then gets up and immediately goes for round two. Over rotating the dive kong as well, he just beasts a handspring to end up on his feet.

Dmitri Gonzalez attempts a massive double kong with a hand rail entrance! but undershoots it. Your basic forward dive roll necessitates a very specific position of the hips/center of mass, and sometimes you'll end up with them not in an ideal place. Here and there, you'll find that mixing breakfalls with rolls, and the many variations that come about, will be more ideal. Stay tuned for drills on developing reactions in your forward falling continuums and how axis changes will create hybrid variations.
You can see more of Dmitri here: www.HueNox.com or catch him on Facebook: facebook.com/dmitri.rg

http://www.amosrendao.com These are SO MUCH FUN, I get so much out of it for my training, so many awesome people involved, and it's highly relevant to Parkour Randori, but I'm not completely pro-competition; I'm also clearly not anti-competition. I'll be releasing some written work on the topic coming soon. To be informed when it drops and keep up with all my projects, subscribe to this email list: http://eepurl.com/NMEZ9
Thanks to everyone who came out to these events, challenged themselves, and made it such a great community experience!
Special thanks to Paul Darnell, Brian Orosco, Phil Boothby, Tom Cappola, Justache Sikkema, for getting footage to me.
Ladies and gentlemen, the amazing Josh Hill on the tempest games steady cam. If you want to work with him, contact him directly here: Joshuakhill@gmail.com Thanks to everyone who filmed including Joel Foss, Justin Sikkema, Satchel Spencer, and anyone else I wasn't informed of.
APEX Movement Invitational every August, keep up with apexmovement.com
Parkour Visions Classic, keep up with https://www.Parkourvisions.org (No one filmed me for their comps :(, so alas, there's no footage represented here)
Running courses under pressure has so many benefits, and specifically, it can help you simulate time-sensitive challenges/emergency situations. It can be training grounds for learning how to breathe and keep collected in the midst of chaos, how to let go of mistakes immediately and focus on adaptation, putting your skills to the test and discovering weaknesses.
What do you think are some more benefits of competition?
Are you against competition? What negative aspects outweigh the benefits for you?
Shuto Kitakata of Saitama, Japan handles a one foot forward slip on a rail by grabbing on to control his decent, causing a variation of wall break fall. This is an important theme in Parkour Ukemi: If you're falling (especially at heights) grab onto or kick off of something in order to guide to your desired landing. This doesn't mean it's always good to hold on tight (although sometimes that is definitely appropriate). Sometimes it's best to just let go with good timing to guide to a desired landing. In this case, it seems it was best to hold on in order to spread some of the impact into the wall break fall and avoid hips and spine coming down onto the stairs.
Special thanks to Takafumi Kojima for providing the video and bringing it to my attention.

Kent Johns of Missoula, Montana slips out on a precision from a 9 ft bar. His calm, cool reaction shows that he's incredibly comfortable with his air awareness and body reorientation at heights. Notice how aware he is of the wall in his fall zone before he even leaves the bar, allowing him to adjust the direction of his roll. You can never have enough reminders that you need these skills before training at height. Any panic or poor reaction to a fall like this can end in serious injury and even death. Kudos to Kent for such a clean reaction to the inevitable.
Kent Johns was recently out here in Boulder to attend the APEX Movement Instructor Certification and won our most recent Freerunning comp. He's a great guy and a very talented practitioner if you didn't already know and haven't been watching his dailies. If you want to see more from him, check out his youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/kentjohnspk
