You look at your watch - the taxi should be here already. You count the cracks in the concrete to pass the time, the asphalt shimmering in the heat. The taxi finally arrives, rushing towards you, then stopping abruptly right in front of you. As you crash down in the back seat, the driver greets you with an exclamation that could be harsh or enthusiastic, you never learned to distinguish the tones of this foreign language. ”To the city,” you ask as clearly as you can. The taxi jumps to speed and the driver switches to broken English, barely making sense. The conversation runs around in circles, skirting the language barrier. ”You want party?” he keeps asking. You’re intrigued by the idea, and wary at the same time. As the taxi approaches the outskirts of the city, you finally say: ”yes, take me to the party.”The taxi screeches to a halt when you reach your destination. This is not what you expected. For this weekend’s challenge we take a dive into drones - not the flying kinds, but musical drones, sustained notes or sounds. The challenge is to make a jam with some droning elements. You can go full experimental and make a minimalist jam with just drones. Or you can take a melodic approach and think of melodies contrasting movement and static elements (maybe research pedal points in music theory?). Or you could look at folk music for inspiration: bagpipes are a good example of a melodic instrument with drones. The sun they gained warmth and light from had disappeared and all that lit their path was strobed shadows through the trees, coming from the light that traveled along side the moon. Indeed, they went on to conquer a large portion of the whole galaxy. Dense and impenetrable jungles and forests were growing everywhere and the Plants were devouring everything they came across. But little did they know that hidden away in the undergrowth of a little forest-covered planet, deep under their successful propagation, some surviving bipeds were beavering away on a revenge story of their own…Small, furry teddybear-like cute and cuddly creatures called Ewoks had gathered their homemade synthesisers and started to jam a mystical tune which slowly caused the dense foliage of the plants to recede and die away, allowing them to live freely and happily once more. Little did they know however, that there were other bipeds watching them from a vast space ship far above, with dark and sinister motives in mind… The Ewoks were also blissfully unaware of the forces of good who were locked in battle with these agents of the dark side.Your challenge this week is to imagine you are one of those Ewoks and jam for your life and the life of the planet!
