But can you recall one about Disaronno? Gabzy’s “Piano” might not be the first to tip the Italian amaretto, but his new track surely matches its taste. Every word from the Southeast Londoner goes down smooth, with just a hint of bite: “Girl, I see you/Don’t play games, I’ll read you/Follow me, I’ll lead you/Let me show you how we do.” One could be convinced that producer Lekaa Beats filtered the instruments through the amber-hued liquid. Raised by Nigerian parents, Gabzy reps a worldly vibe. For two years, he lived in the States and absorbed the country’s R&B on the radio. Mostly, the man who also goes by Mr. Malone - an “alter ego” - credits the “multicultural vibe” of Peckham, the London neighborhood where he resided the longest, with shaping his art. Music was always a first love; but his artistic career was sidetracked by his footballing talents. That was until some local rhymers caught wind of a freestyle and urged him back on course. The AyoJay fan often points to his 2019 EP, ‘Summers,’ as an artistic inflection point. It’s the project that solidified his creative partnership with American producer Melvitto. Recently Amaarae gave the duo a shoutout, joining Saweetie on the growing list of big names that have dapped up our man. Back to the Disaronno. As the pop punk revival continues, Gen Zers such as Stacy who not only uphold its core tenets (mosh pits, lyrics about sadness bordering on nihilism, earworm guitar hooks, etc.) but also push it forward are enhancing the genre that gave the previous generation an identity and solace. Judging from photos and fan response, it’s def safe to say that the face-tatted 22-year-old is adept at fostering community at his gigs. In March he’ll traverse clubs across Europe; In May and July he’ll be rocking Stateside. Opportunity abounds. “No one is making music off of just their idea. It’s impossible. I like to be influenced,” says the Vancouver born and raised, LA based singer. He counts Beach House and $uicideboys among current fascinations, but has claimed that he “doesn’t listen” to artists who sound like him. Audiences initially learned about Stacy through 2021’s ‘NEGATIVE’ EP. Its subdued lofi mix gave it propulsion, but made way for his deeply angsty lyrics, so as not to be overwhelming. Fans really connected with the lyrics of “i walk this earth all by myself,” which tackle parental divorce and the terror of independence. While the production choices remain similar on this year’s self-titled debut album, evolution can be found in collaborators (fellow inked up sadboi Trippie Redd and genre hater The Kid LAROI) and subject matter. “Six are about girls, two mention death, and the rest vary,” he told FLOOD. The Lexington native has credited her mom for the strong Christian upbringing that girds her life journey, and thanked her with a song. “Mamas” is a prime example of the way Wilson blends elements of mystery and adoration that are key to faith-based music with a tasteful country touch that’s earned her plenty of crossover fans. But it ain’t the only one. Most of the 15 tracks of her ‘My Jesus’ debut could pour from speakers at a morning church service and blare from Nashville jukeboxes later in the night. “Sunday Sermons” is a stomping clapper with huge drums; “God Thing” runs on guitar riffs and a vocal performance that conjures the eloquence of Maren Morris. A little while back we interviewed Anne about “Seventh of June,” her utterly devastating tribute to her deceased brother. Again she was insightful when we chatted with her in the DSCVR studio, which she treated like something akin to a pulpit. Last year's "Looking For" finds acoustic instruments riding a pounding beat that rockets the Tuscaloosa teen's voice into a plaintive bellow, a rather unique resonance to be sure. In 2002's "vintage tees," something similar happens, only there are a couple keybs added to provide texture. The minute you think the singer falls into the folky side of things, his pop personality blossoms to dominate the action. All good in that department, because communication, and a widely broadcast communication at that, seems to be where Brenn! is most comfortable. 2023 was an impactful year for this Southerner; he went from regional ripples to national impact on the power of the irresistible "4runner," which as he says, "went super viral," after he plopped it onto TikTok (although he did break two ankles doing a backflip for the camera on a Nashville street). We were part of that viral splash, seduced by Brenn's charms. So we had him in to explain himself in a short interview. Then we asked him to do "Revival." And it worked out fine. For the last several years, Medium Build (aka Nick Carpenter) has made a good chunk of his lyrics turn your head immediately, usually while throwing in a little philosophy for good measure. “Why do we have to be something bigger than we were yesterday?” he queries on one song from his 2019 album, ‘Wild.’ And in the new “In My Room,” his portrait of a family in emotional disarray gets more and more vivid, and therefore increasingly poignant, with each new turn of phrase. The singer, from a kid’s POV, sits on his bed and wonders “if I’ll ever get so rich that I never feel alone when I’m at home?” A Georgia youth whose Tennessee college stint and subsequent search-for-self foray in Alaska, Carpenter’s world view centers on a search for deeper and wider perspective. Dude’s always writing. He currently has four albums and a live EP in his pocket. Last year he connected with X Ambassadors’ Sam Harris and commiserated about the frustrations of being in fledgling bands as kids in the heartfelt, “Friend For Life.” Carpenter has said he’s gone through phases of “ripping off” Bruce Springsteen, Mumford & Sons, and Paul McCartney, but pushed on with his songs because he wanted to find his true voice. We think he’s there, and as you can hear on these performances of “Crying Over U” and “In My Room,” his way with sculpting a lyric is just as captivating as his way of delivering its meaning. Then an eighth-grader who grew up in Germany and Nigeria before his fam settled in South London, Strandz’s priority wasn’t learning the particulars of recording equipment (although that’s a boon in these tech-savvy times). It was to shake a few hands and extend the number of names on his contact list - you know, to get in the game. That he did, and caught the fever along the way. Without any previous music skills, he learned to play the piano for his audition at the famed BRIT School, which was nearby his house in Croydon. He made the cut, and the education did what education does: broadens interests. After opting for a couple gap years from uni to concentrate on creative skill sets, and by 2017 and the arrival of “Paper,” things started rolling. Early tracks such as “A-List” and “Carla” hit in the spring of 2020. With a yen for ‘90s hip-hop and a love of Jhené Aiko and Feist, the young artist wanted to make a point of crafting music that was emotionally open. As it developed, it was marked by a vocal style that was both familiar and unique. Complex has said that Strandz’s “flow is anything but a throwback, opting for a slow-and-low delivery that fits well with that era of hip-hop while being right-up-the-minute new.” Dodging the dominance of drill is a tough assignment for a UK rapper in 2023, but last year’s “4 The Money” knows its way around funk, and this past February’s “Us Against the World,” a TikTok hit that put this fan of Fela and 50 Cent on a lot of party playlists, rides a Smokey Robinson & the Miracles sample. Yep, heads are usually noddin’ when it blasts from the box. With live instrumentalists and singers in mind, Strandz has said that the upcoming months are ones that will be about “breaking boundaries and trying crazy stuff.” We’re here to support that vision, regardless how it might shift. Almost at 2 million views as of now, those ctrl takes of “Stand By Me” and “Done For Me” are an undeniable metric of the crooner’s gravity and growing cache in pop and R&B. DJ Khaled obviously saw the potential when he tapped the son of Haitian immigrants for the title track on ‘GOD DID.’ And check the way he brings a little gospel to Lil Baby’s “Forever.” That one got him a spot on SNL and another chance to woo audiences with his live skills. Fridayy - born Francis LeBlanc - is also a multi-instrumentalist. So it wasn’t a surprised that when we invited him to come to our studios, this time for Artists To Watch 2024, he had drums, bass, and guitar in tow. Backup singers too. “Lost My Way” tiptoes through a dembow riddim. “When It Comes To You” is an R&B love song that leaves ego at the door (spend some time with its nuptial video). Lu promises it’ll help make you feel like the “baddest bitch” when you go out. He introduced himself to fans with 2020’s moody “NWAR,” but his “Supalife” track (or should we say his “Supalife” tracks - iterations of the original comprised a small tsunami) not only turned lots of heads on the streets of Paris, but made their way to many Western Europe dance clubs. If a track can be rough and smooth at the same time, this is it. With a mix of Afrobeats and amapiano riddims driving the action, Harley sounded like he was riding the bullet train. Those flexes that come so quickly from the rapper’s mouth have clout, which is one reason that taken in total, the four “Supalife” chapters became a candid look into the artist’s perspective of the culture that nurtures his sound as well as his promise to keep things real as he progresses. Harley also likes to keep things short and sweet when he delivers the goods. That way they have more impact. “Supalife 1” was a mere :62 seconds long, and its third cousin only stretched to 1:20. Nevertheless a portrait emerged as the agile rapper unpacked poetic opinions of his life. From Villeneuve-Saint-Georges - just 15 kilometers down the snaking Seine from the Latin Quarter - he’s making plenty of inroads towards a true cosmopolitan scene. It’s a long way from “NWAR” to the deep finesse of the six tracks on October’s ‘Loading’ EP (13:28 if anyone’s counting). Here, with blazing records like “T’malade” with its Didi B feature, and “Trop intense” with its biking-the-streets-of-Ivory-Coast video, Harley solidifies all the promise of his earlier work. That the R&B dude from Dorchester, Massachusetts has a song called “Doctor, My Eyes,” for instance, will certainly make Jackson Browne fans do a double take. “That’s where I got the title,” he has said. “It’s about him being desperate to make any sense of his life and experiences.” Later in that interview he tips '90s rock crew Incubus as further inspiration for the single that would ultimately lead to debut album ‘A Brief Nirvana.’ But let’s rewind a little farther back to his decision to join the legendary list of Berklee School of Music dropouts. Mad skills are required to get into that institution, and the Boston native checks the boxes of vocalist, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. With school in the rearview, this Beatles, Kid Cudi, and Stevie Wonder fan flexed his muscles and crafted ‘El Dorado.’ It’s a dynamic thesis statement that dabbles in pop funk (“The Heat”), but mostly offers up R&B soaked in enough ennui it’d make even Frank Ocean concerned (“Jealous” is a proper example). After a yearlong gestation, Khamari returned with a trickle of tunes that would lead to his debut album. For a work that nominally aims to be a snapshot of surreal joy, ‘A Brief Nirvana’ traffics in vivid realism. He compares himself to Picasso and Kendrick. Eats French toast and bacon with a lover. Drifts to sleep listening to Portishead. Each detail brings listeners deeper into his delicate world. Reviewing the album, UPROXX called him a “fresh voice in the game.” We agree, and invited the now LA-based singer onto the ATW 2024 team. Touchdown has gone through such stretches, but these days he’s not only being heard, he’s being supported. It’s because his talent is as obvious as it is deep. He was a feature on Travis Scott’s ‘UTOPIA’ album, and the crazed breadth of genre approaches offered along the way started to track a broad vision rather than confuse fans with endless variety. Touchdown’s recent ‘How Do You Sleep At Night?’ debut album delivers that variety while offering a through-line of logic… and catchiness. Whether waxing forlorn on “Daddy Mama Drama,” delivering the drone pop of “Familiarity,” or blasting the Joan Jett rap of “OK,” our guy sounds authentic and animated. The title of the retro funk workout “Mood Swings” says it all - energy shifts are what Teezo is all about. Maybe that’s why Drake called it “some of the best music ever.” However it shakes out, we knew we wanted our guy to be part of DSCVR Artists To Watch 2024 because he’s a genuine performer. It’s when perseverance and correct guidance get involved that the world receives an artist on the level of Florentina. The Kosovo native grew up with a musician father, who encouraged her craft early. By 6 she was a chirping songbird in her own right; ensuing years at music workshops hosted by the nearby Popakademie Baden-Württemberg advanced her skills and her network. Opportunities arose. Soon the precocious youngster was singing in a chorus at a sold out Pink Floyd arena show, and tracking background vocals for Casper's triple-gold Top 1 album "Hinterland." The first Florentina original songs - released around 2018 - were composed with Albanian and English lyrics. Later, this Ariana Grande and Rihanna fan switched to mostly singing in German, predicated on the language’s straightforwardness. “I’ve noticed how directly I can express myself. I don't want to hide my feelings,” she’s said about the creative move. Certainly no one would accuse the green-haired pop parvenu of holding her tongue after listening to glossy bangers “I Hate You, I Love You” and the explicitly-titled “F*** You.” And she totally held her own when popular German rhymers Nisa and Ary came calling for her vocal prowess. Like those collabs, “Über dem Himmel” has racked up seven digit streams. With its soaring vocals and unshakeable confidence, this performance of the 2023 release is a great introduction to Florentina. Kudos to team Vevo, who really captured her essence. Olly had that gift from the jump. Check “Il Primo Amore,” the Genoese rhymer’s breakout hit from a couple years back. It’s an impressively wide-ranging portrait of young romance, starting with the butterflies and ending with the inevitable goodbyes. Similar to the songs of fellow husky-voiced loverboy Bad Bunny, listeners don’t need to speak the language to identify with the passion. The accompanying heart-wrenching video grabbed more than 100,000 views in its first week, by the way. 2020’s ‘lo sono’ saw the beginning of his creative partnership with producer JVLI, who Olly credits with introducing electronic and pop to his musical palette. The four-to-the-floor oomf of the JVLI-produced “Quando Piove” definitely stands out from the hip-hop stylings of the four songs on the EP that were helmed by Yanoni, Olly’s other go-to producer at the time. The next year the duo drove further down the EDM path with “Lego,” a fist-pumping club banger replete with triumphant horns and singalong falsettos. But as mentioned at the top, remember, Olly’s got layers. Needless to say, Olly rolled into our studio with plenty of momentum. “I loved the energy on set,” he told us afterwards. “It is a great opportunity for me to showcase my music and connect with new and beautiful realities outside of Italy.” With these performances of “A Squarciagola” and “Tutto male,” now the whole world can unpeel Olly’s layers.
