hr-Bigband – Frankfurt Radio Big Band 2024-01-12 | Till Brönner gehört definitiv zu den deutschen Musikern, die internationale Bekanntheit und Beachtung erlangt haben. Hierzulande ist er ohnehin ein Star, auch jenseits der Jazzszene. Sein Name steht als Garant für exquisites Trompetenspiel, gepaart mit charismatischer Bühnenpräsenz. Nach seinem Auftritt als Solist beim Europa Open Air 2019 gibt es jetzt ein ganz neues Projekt mit ihm und der hr-Bigband.

Sommerliche Temperaturen herrschten, als Till Brönner und die hr-Bigband 2019 gemeinsam beim Europa Open Air an der Weseler Werft 20.000 Besucher*innen begeisterten. Fast schon intim wirkt dagegen der Große Saal der Alten Oper Frankfurt, in dem der Trompeter und die hr-Bigband jetzt ein neues Programm vorstellen, das sie zuvor eine Woche lang gemeinsam in Frankfurt erarbeiten – damals wie heute unter der musikalischen Leitung von Magnus Lindgren, langjähriger künstlerischer Partner sowohl von Till Brönner als auch der hr-Bigband. "Italien“ lautet dabei das Motto, und das interpretieren die Musiker*innen mit einem bunten Mix von Klassik über Filmmusik bis Pop, bei dem Altbekanntes wie "Nessun dorma“ oder "Volare“ im Jazzgewand erklingt. "Eigentlich bin ich Italiener“, sagt schließlich Till Brönner, der zwar am Niederrhein geboren wurde, aber die ersten Lebensjahre in Rom verbrachte und an diese Zeit immer noch glückliche Erinnerungen hat.

Mark Turner is one of the most ground-breaking jazz saxophone players of the present time. Not least because of his intensity, his intellectual depth and his attention to detail, the thoughtful musician, who studied at Berklee College of Music, long ranks among the absolute jazz greats.
Besides music, the saxophonist has a weakness for science fiction literature by the way. It was thus the novel "Return from the Stars" by the Polish author Stanisław Lem that inspired him to the title of his new album. A passion one can easily transfer to his music as probably no-one is a greater master at combining the traditional with the new. This evening, the world-famous musician meets the Frankfurt Radio Bigband. Well then, take us to the stars and back, please!

Mark Turner ist einer der wegweisendsten Jazzsaxofonisten der Gegenwart. Dass er schon lange zu den ganz Großen gehört, verdankt der nachdenkliche Musiker, der am Berklee College of Music studiert hat, nicht zuletzt seiner Intensität und seinem intellektuellen Tiefgang – aber auch seiner Liebe zum Detail. Denn bei Turner sitzt jede Note.

Neben der Musik hat der Saxofonist übrigens ein absolutes Faible für Science-Fiction-Literatur. So ist etwa der Titel seines neuesten Albums "Return from the Stars" vom gleichnamigen Roman des polnischen Autors Stanisław Lem inspiriert. Eine Vorliebe, die sich auch auf seine Musik übertragen lässt, weiß wohl kaum einer Tradition und Neues so gut zu verbinden wie er. Superb soloing combined with a unique sensitivity for sound – there is a reason that Marius Neset is often named in the same breath with great jazz musicians such as Michael Brecker and Jan Gabarek. Born in Bergen in 1985, the saxophone player partly owes his success to the British musician Django Bates who not only became his mentor at the Conservatory of Kopenhagen but also took over the piano part on Neset’s second album "GoldenXplosion" which was published in 2011. Also part of the project: the Swedish drummer Anton Eger. Together with the Frankfurt Radio Bigband, Neset and Eger will provide the audience with lyrical saxophone melodies and groovy sound explosions.

Das Deutsche Jazzfestival Frankfurt kehrt nach zwei Jahren Pandemie in vollem Umfang zurück. Da darf die hr-Bigband natürlich nicht fehlen. Gemeinsam mit der hr-Bigband sorgen Marius Neset und Anton Eger für lyrischen Saxofon-Sound und groovende Klangexplosionen.

Virtuose Soli, gepaart mit einem außergewöhnlichen Gespür für Klänge – Marius Neset wird nicht umsonst häufig in einem Atemzug mit Jazzgrößen wie Michael Brecker und Jan Gabarek genannt. Seinen Durchbruch verdankt der 1985 in Bergen geborene Saxofonist dem britischen Musiker Django Bates. Der wurde am Kopenhagener Konservatorium nicht nur sein Mentor, sondern übernahm auch den Klavierpart auf Nesets 2011 veröffentlichtem zweiten Album "GoldenXplosion".

Ebenfalls mit von der Partie: der schwedische Schlagzeuger Anton Eger. Gemeinsam mit der hr-Bigband sorgen die beiden also für lyrischen Saxofon-Sound und groovende Klangexplosionen.

At the age of 11, Billy Childs discovered the music of the New York singer-songwriter Laura Nyro. The love for her music led to a brilliant tribute in 2015: "Map to the treasure - Reimagining Laura Nyro". With this album he set a monument to Nyro's work, which was also awarded a Grammy. Billy Child's versions of Nyro's music are central to this program.

Mit elf Jahren entdeckt Billy Childs die Musik der New Yorker Singer-Songwriterin Laura Nyro. Die Liebe zu ihrer Musik führte 2015 zu einer brillanten Hommage: „Map to the treasure – Reimagining Laura Nyro”. Mit diesem Album hat er Nyros Schaffen ein Denkmal gesetzt, das auch mit einem Grammy ausgezeichnet wurde. Billy Childs Versionen der Musik von Nyro stehen zentral in diesem Programm.

The history of jazz is that of its rhythm: what was new in the course of its development was first rhythmically new. It goes without saying that with Wolfgang Haffner and Gregory Hutchinson two recognized "master drummers" belong in this program. Third in the league is the Swedish singer Viktoria Tolstoy. With her dynamic voice she will refine some classics of big band literature.

Together with the "Scary Pockets" and the Frankfurt Radio Bigband it will get funky in Frankfurt’s broadcasting studios: The hip collective of musicians from Los Angeles with Jack Conte on keyboards and Ryan Lerman on guitar regularly produces funk covers of famous pop songs on YouTube – each time with varying soloists and band members. Not only have they already invited top-notch artists of the US-American funk and pop scene to be their guests but also well-known jazz soloists such as John Scofield, Robben Ford, or Larry Goldings. Last year, the "Scary Pockets" featured the Frankfurt Radio Bigband. Together they recorded Daft Punk’s song "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger". The video became a huge success on social media. It is only logical that this episode is to be continued – this time as a live performance in the hr-Sendesaal.

Im Funkhaus geht der Funk ab: denn das angesagte Musikerkollektiv "Scary Pockets" aus Los Angeles ist zu Gast bei der hr-Bigband!

Das Musikerkollektiv um den Keyboarder Jack Conte und den Gitarristen Ryan Lerman produziert regelmäßig Funk-Covers von bekannten Popsongs auf YouTube – stets mit wechselnden Solisten und Bandmitgliedern. Zu ihren Gästen zählen nicht nur Topkünstler der US-amerikanischen Funk- und Popszene, auch illustre Jazzsolisten wie John Scofield, Robben Ford oder Larry Goldings hatten schon die Ehre.

Der hr-Bigband widmeten die "Scary Pockets" im letzten Jahr ein Feature und so wurde zusammen der Song "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" von Daft Punk produziert. Das Video wurde zum Riesenerfolg in den sozialen Netzwerken. Und deshalb gibt’s jetzt die Wiederholung – und zwar live im hr-Sendesaal!

In 2016, Eric Clapton’s "Tears in Heaven" made Kinga Głyk a YouTube-Star. By now, she has become one of the most sought-after electric bass players of her home country Poland. Only 23 years old, the musician has already published four albums. Her most recent one, »Feelings«, will appear in a fresh big band guise at the Europa Open Air.
