In fact, the first radio broadcast in Turkey was way back in 1927 and that, of course was AM as FM wasn’t even invented until 1933. The first FM broadcast in Turkey didn’t come until 1978 and that was mono! Stereo? Well that didn’t arrive until 1984! For an American like me, that’s hard to believe since we’ve had widespread stereo FM broadcasting since the sixties.
But, of course, that’s the advantage of a free market versus a largely state run media. Without competition, there sometimes isn’t much incentive to improve.
In Turkey, radio flourished in the early years not for commercial reasons, but as a means for populist Republican leaders like Ataturk to promote nationalism through speeches and political discussions.
When the Democrat party came into power in the fifties, it demanded that radio broadcasts reflect party views. And with all the coups, one in 1960, one in 1971 and another in 1980, stations lost more and more autonomy.
So, is there AM radio today in Turkey? As far as I can tell, no. In fact it seems as though the US is one of the few places where AM radio still thrives. I mean, it sucks but it’s still very much alive. In Europe, and most of the world though, more and more transmitters are shutting down on AM medium and long wave bands.
But even in America, people are starting to question just how long AM and even FM radio will survive. The most popular time and place to listen to radio is in when driving in a car. And we’re just doing less and less of that due to COVID and the transition to working from home.
Some fear broadcast radio will go all digital making vintage radios obsolete. And since streaming is getting easier and more reliable, others are questioning the need for broadcast radio altogether.
What do you think the future of holds for radio? And what’s it like where you live? Let me know in the comments. I hope to see you there where we can all have a good discussion about it. And stay tuned for new videos. I’ll see you soon.

For a little background, the tesla coil can create musical notes using its controller (called an interrupter) and the controller accepts MIDI files (converted to OMD format) using an SD card. Also, a tesla coil can cause nearby fluorescent lamps to glow from the static discharge. I wondered if a plasma ball would illuminate in the same way, so I purchased one and got amazing results.
The video was supposed to simply be the tesla coil playing the music. The fire at the end was not intentional, I assure you. As the turntable was spinning the fluorescent bulbs, I noticed that an arc was discharging from each bulb and completing a path to the ground floor through the rubber mat. As the turntable spun, I believed each bulb wouldn’t be lit long enough to start a fire from the arcing.
But mid way through shooting, I noticed some smoldering and went to grab a fire extinguisher in a nearby room just in case. Thank goodness I did, as just as I returned the smoldering had turned to flames. I quickly unplugged everything and extinguished the flame.
What a mess. In the end, nobody was hurt and nothing expensive was damaged (including the Tesla coil).

In the storm’s aftermath, almost in shock, you flip between your two favorite stations, WBTA, Batavia and WKBW, Buffalo. AM radio is king of news and it will tell you not only of the dramatic rescues and tragic deaths of the storm, but of murder, the Vietnam war, the race against the commies to space, celebrity deaths, battles between Republicans and Democrats, and war between the Catholic church and divorce.

Additional info not covered in the video:
ESR is equivalent series resistance. It’s the type of DC leakage in a capacitor that is the equivalent of adding a resistor in series. This can often be measured in circuit with low voltage.
Parallel leakage is the equivalent of adding a resistor in parallel with the capacitor. This is typically measured out of circuit at a voltage matching the rated voltage for the capacitor.
The larger paper wax capacitors in vintage equipment are usually just measured for parallel leakage.
With lower voltage capacitors found in solid state equipment, ESR becomes an important measurement.
Measuring either type of DC leakage in a capacitor is important as a capacitor’s job is to block DC, not pass it.

What’s a bench concert? Well, just a fun way to demonstrate something I repaired on my bench by having musicians perform with it from that very same bench.
Today, they’ll play live through a 1971 Kenwood KR-6170 receiver. Kenwood called it the “Jumbo” because it had so many features. Some of those include a microphone, guitar inputs, spring reverb and drum machine. All of which will be used during the performances. For speakers, the KR-6170 will drive a pair of Cambridge Soundworks Model Sixes.

Bozak Speaker
I went a little overboard and just purchased this Flir E76. Both still and video images from this camera really are impressive and I wanted to make this quick video to show you some of my results. Here’s my foot. My wife’s legs. My dog. My house. My grass. And my plumbing.
Moving to our favorite subject, here’s the back of one of my home theater amps at idle. Now lets watch a video of my Eico HF-52 vacuum tube amp, AKA, Old Blue.
Let’s turn it on and watch the tubes warm up. I’ve sped the playback to 200%. Two of the tubes are enclosed in metal shields, so we don’t see much there. This 12AX7 tube gets a bit warm. The 6CG7 phase inverter gets a bit warmer. But it’s the GZ34 rectifier and EL34 output tubes that, as expected, get the warmest. Note that the amp is idling and not amplifying a signal here.
The camera tells us that the ambient room temperature is about 74.5 degrees Fahrenheit, and the hottest areas, shown in bright yellow, are coming in at about 164 degrees. The tubes are actually much hotter here, though. The camera just hasn’t caught up to the rising temperature.
Let’s turn the amp off now. And you’ll notice that our temperature continues to rise. Again, this shows the camera’s measurement delay. The amp is actually cooling down at this point, but we see we reach a maximum of 213 degrees.
I’m gonna speed the playback up to 50 times now so you can watch the amp cool down to some music. In reality, it takes over 33 minutes for the tubes to cool down to about 76 degrees. Enjoy!

You might think this would require a lot of complexity, but it doesn’t. In fact, what separates the SCA-80 from the SCA-80Q is only the addition of a simple circuit. It’s called the Hafler circuit, after David Hafler, who along with Ed Lauraent, founded Dynaco in 1954. Hobbyists and manufacturers have experimented with the circuit for decades and I even experimented with it myself as a teenager in the early 80s.
It works like this. The left and right front speakers, and the positive terminals of the rear speakers are connected to the amp as usual. The negative terminals of the rear speakers, though, are connected to the amp only through a 10 ohm resistor, shunting most of the negative signal. The negatives of the rear speakers are also connected to each other, which results in out-of-phase signals being heard from the back.
Out of phase signals in stereo recordings, especially those in live performances are often created from the delayed reflected sounds from the rear walls of the recording space. The Hafler circuit is a clever, yet simple way to extract those reflected sounds and direct them to the rear where they would naturally occur. Potentially, making a small room sound more like a concert hall.
Dynaco says music that’s been recorded live or in a hall known for fine acoustics will sound especially good. But, notes to also look for “pop material” which employs special sonic effects. Given the time period, I always read that to mean Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. So, I included selections from that album in my listening tests along with lots of other types of music, too.
So, how good is 50 year old fake surround sound? To find out, I set up a test space using the SCA80-Q with a pair of vintage Dynaco A25s for the front speakers and newer Sonus Faber Concertinos for the rear. Dynaco says the 4-dimensional effect can sound best in a small space, so a nook in my play room worked out just right. Even the ping pong table finally got some use.
Watch the video to see what some friends and family thought of the system and I give my audiophile opinion as well.

Video Text:
Welcome to part seven of the SCA-80Q amplifier kit series.
In parts one through six, I unboxed the kit, tested and replaced the faulty components and completed the construction. If you missed those episodes, you may want to go back and check them out.
After completing the final assembly in the last episode, I discovered there was a serious problem with distortion. Signal tracing showed that:
1. There was a clean signal coming out of both preamplifier boards
2. Under load, the signal on both amplifier boards at each transistor was distorted.
3. At Q1, the first transistor in the amp boards that the signal encounters, these were the scope readings at the emitter, base and collector.
4. There was a clean signal coming from the headphone jack, but when a headphone was plugged in, the right speaker switched off as it should, but the left did not.
Based on this evidence, I asked viewers what you thought went wrong.
* A bad power supply?
* A bad or wrong transistor?
* A bad or wrong capacitor?
* A bad or wrong resistor?
* A bad or wrong diode?
* Or, a short somewhere in the amp?
I gotta say, I got a lot of good answers, but nobody really figured out what went wrong, which quite simply, was my brain. Let me explain.
If you saw part two, you know that many of the carbon comp resistors that came with the kit tested badly and I replaced most of them on the preamp and amp boards.
Well, it turns out that instead of replacing R20 with the correct 3.3 ohm value, instead I used a 3.3K ohm resistor.
This simple mistake meant that many voltages on the amp board were being strangled by a resistance that was 999% too high!
You might be wondering why both amp boards weren’t working, and the simple answer is that I made the mistake on both boards.
Now the reason I say my brain was to fault is that I’ve made this mistake before. For some reason, when my eyes see 3.3, 4.7 or whatever ohms, my brain wants to add a K for thousands. It’s probably because most resistors ARE thousands of ohms, and my brain is conditioned to expect that.
The real answer I was looking for, of course, though was “A bad or wrong resistor.” If you didn’t guess correctly, don’t beat yourself up. This was a tricky one and despite using a signal generator, multimeter and oscilloscope, it was a boring visual inspection and component cross-check that ultimately found the issue.
Installing the correct 3.3 ohm resistors fixed the distortion issue, but I still had one problem. As headphone jack that wasn’t switching off the left speaker. This amp doesn’t have a speaker on/off control, so it relies on the headphone jack to turn off the speakers when a headphone is plugged in.
Once again, the problem was found from doing a visual inspection.
Take a look at the jack. Notice there’s a small tab present on the right channel conductors, but not on the left.
Looking back at the unboxing from part one, we can see that the jack came this way.
When a plug is inserted, this tab allows the conductors to separate and disconnect the speaker.
The obvious solution? Tupperware, of course. No, not to keep the jack fresh. But as a source of plastic to make a new tab.
First, I cut a small piece.
Used the tab I had to mark a template.
Cut the matching piece out.
Inserted it into position. And reinstalled the original.
Let’s do a quick test.
Amp sounds good.
Volume control works.
Balance works.
Bass.
Treble.
Loudness.
Mono.
Back to stereo.
And a headphone plug switches off both speakers.
Nice.
I promised you bench tests in this video, but I actually want to save that for a dedicated video. So, stay tuned for the final episode, part 8, where I’ll talk a little about the “4-dimensional” feature of this amp. And do a complete set of bench tests including power, frequency response, THD and signal to noise ratio and more.
Stay tuned.
