I loved the idea of this magnificent tree flying through space, and tried to imagine what the theme of such a ship would be. I wrote this track about a week before GDC2024 for their demo derby with that as my inspiration, and got some decent response from the audience. Even though people seemed to like it, I thought about shelving the track. I wasn't sure if anyone else would like it outside of that small little world...and it's a shorter piece that doesn't have any singing (which people seem to like). But in the end, I decided I liked the song enough to not kill it, and started brainstorming a short story for it. I sketched out one of the roughest storyboards you'll ever see and sent it to my good friend and collaborator, @Danidoodle. Thank god for her incredible imagination and being able to see beyond the squiggly lines I had drawn for her as her roadmap. She absolutely knocked it out of the park. I want to watch more of this world that she's created. AND LOOK AT THESE SQUISHY LITTLE PLANT PEOPLE SHE DREW!!!! I adore them, and I hope you do too. And I hope you enjoy the music. The Witcher - Song of the White Wolf [Cover] John Theodore 2023-08-08 | Season 1 of The Witcher's soundtrack was incredible. There was something raw, frantic, and genuinely authentic about the music of Season 1 that Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinelli came up with. From "Toss a Coin" to the Title Theme, every track just fit so perfectly. The soundtrack is a staple in my music playlists. It's a shame Henry Cavil is no longer Geralt. He was the perfect choice and I don't foresee the show lasting much longer with his departure. I felt like covering this song from Season 1 would be a nice little send off for him and the show. Enjoy my floating head, mediocre singing, and a bit of hurdy gurdy and nyckelharpa love for "The Song of the White Wolf".New original music is on the horizon, featuring some amazing animation and guest vocalists. Frenzied Flame Merchant Nyckelharpa and Hurdy Gurdy Cover - Elden Ring OST John Theodore 2022-11-10 | Elden Ring is steeped in hidden lore...and I love that FromSofware used music as one of those hiding places. From the Chanting Winged Dames, to the Godskin Apostles, the music and lyrics reveal stories and histories of the Lands Between and the characters who inhabit it. I like to believe they did the same with the Merchants' music. The Frenzied Flame Merchant's melody seems so haunting and a bit eerie when you first come upon it...almost like a lullaby for the dead the player is surrounded by. I listened to a few other composers' arrangements of this melody, and they were all beautiful and haunting and fitting with the scenery we find the Frenzied Merchants in. But when I sat down and harmonized what I thought the melody suggested, I was struck by how much brighter and happier the tune was! I'm usually all about writing dark, melodramatic music, but this melody had such a naturally happy feel to it I just went with it. I like to believe this is one of the few surviving melodies the Merchant's remember from the times before the Shattering...when they were a happy people, wandering the world and selling their wares and enjoying the company of friends and strangers alike. Follow along with the music to this orchestral rendition of the popular sea shanty 'Spanish Ladies' - from the album 'The Seeker's Guide to Twisted Taverns. When I got the brief and started thinking about this track, I began writing my own shanty. As I was writing, it just never felt right. This was an establishment with patrons and pirates who would have known many a shanty! So I thought to myself, "What is one sea shanty that everyone would know?" and Spanish Ladies came immediately to mind. So I scraped what little I had started on my original, and began coming up with a ghostly arrangement of this popular shanty. Nomadic Merchant Nyckelharpa Cover - Elden Ring OST John Theodore 2022-05-20 | The first time I came across the Nomadic Merchant and heard his song, I stopped in my tracks and smiled. It was such a hauntingly beautiful melody and so fitting for the Lands Between. I also thought it would be a perfect song to play on my nyckelharpa! So I jotted down a quick transcription during my second play-through, and decided to add my own little flare to the end of the melody. The music in Elden Ring never really calls attention to itself, but when it does it will make you pause and draw you even deeper into the world. Being a huge fan of Lord of the Rings, and especially the movies and the score by Howard Shore, getting to try my hand at writing in his style and getting to pretend I was writing for those stories was such a joy for me. It was also a pleasure getting to write parts for Kristin Naigus (an incredible wind player who is featured all over this album, and pretty much any video game music you've heard in the past few years) and Graham Terry (a friend from high school who I have always looked up to as a musician). By the Frost - The Seekers Guide to Twisted Taverns - Page to Stage John Theodore 2022-04-01 | Welcome to another episode of 'Page to Stage', where we take a look at the music from "The Seeker's Guide to Twisted Taverns" and get to see the musicians who performed on it! Today we have "By the Frost", a Norse inspired tavern that screamed at me..."Use your Nyckelharpa!!!!". Now, any traditional nyckelharpa player would hear this track and be shaking their head in disappointment...because the instrument was not really around during the height of the Viking age...and because it is mainly used in traditional Swedish folk music and polskas. BUT...I don't really care...it sounds awesome, it looks awesome, and I am in the mindset that instruments should be used however you want to use them. You'll be seeing some more traditional usage of the nyckelharpa in up-coming videos, but for now you get to see me using it on a track that I think would fit in well with a tavern full of Vikings! The Tavern at Deaths Door - The Seekers Guide to Twisted Taverns - Page to Stage John Theodore 2022-03-18 | "What do you think a place where you spend all eternity in a tavern would sound like? People spend their time here telling stories in the valor hall, or playing games with Death who runs it." When reading through the tavern prompts given to me by @Runesmith, I would sometimes have an immediate light bulb moment and know exactly which instruments were going to be used...others would take more time and experimenting to find the voice of the tavern. "The Tavern at Death's Door" fell hard into the former category. I knew from the get go that I'd be using my dear friend (and Grammy winning soprano), Hila Plitmann and my other amazingly talented friend and cellist, Deryn Cullen to do the heavy lifting on this track. I also had a rough idea of what I wanted the music to sound like. I had recently played through the video game, "Everybody's Gone to the Rapture" and the score by Jessica Curry moved me in a way only music can...and that is what I wanted this tavern's track to do. I wanted the track to be on the constant verge of sorrow, and the constant verge of joy...so the track never truly settles on a major or minor key, shifting between the two throughout the track. I don't know if it's moved anyone who's listened the way it moved me while writing, but I hope that it has. Also...I didn't record Hila during her recording session, so that's why she's not in the video. I was unfortunately preoccupied with gawking at her amazingness during the session and I totally blanked on setting my camera up. 'The Dungeon of Darkness' was such a joy to write for "The Seeker's Guide to Twisted Taverns". When starting a new piece, I always try to find what the heart of it will be before I even put pen to paper (or keyboard to computer these days). For 'Dungeon of Darkness', finding that came pretty easy. What says "spooky" but not "frightening" better than a theremin? It was also fun because I got to flex my composer muscle with some fun little homages to old spooky TV shows and some fun musical modulations throughout. And working with @carolinaeyckvideos was an absolute joy. Making noise with a theremin is easy, but making it sing takes a master. And Carolina is that and more.
