In Europe, these cars were only available with six- and eight-cylinder gasoline engines. Here, however, the surprise (and oftentimes the smile on your face) might be the sound coming from under the hood. High-compression engines were then offered exclusively to users in the United States and Canada. In the latter country, metric units are used, so that the speedometer is calibrated in km/h, the temperature on the gauges appears in degrees Celsius, and the mileage is counted in kilometers. Such is the car we are dealing with in this ad. The Mercedes 300 SD W116 is a version with a turbocharged OM617 five-cylinder diesel. It's an engine that was only available at the beginning of the W126's production, was considered a model of durability, and is delivered here in the best package we could imagine. It was powered by an inline M110.921 engine, which, fed by a Solex 4A1 carburetor, was capable of generating 160 hp, transmitted to the rear axle. This made it possible to fully enjoy the dynamic driving experience and possibilities offered by the new fully independent rear suspension design that debuted on the W114/W115 models. 11.3 seconds to 100 and a top speed of 185 km/h is probably not the performance one associates with the silhouette most often associated with cabs on Polish roads years ago. But Mercedes has always given choices to its customers, so there have been some... the one on display comes from the second production series, distinguished by, among other things, larger rear lamps and wider chrome trim on the tailgate, the absence of triangular tilt windows on the front doors, larger mirrors and a safety steering wheel. Since the new top model had been designed as an exclusive representative car, intended to fulfill the highest demands, it was serially equipped with many technical details, which taken together, stood for the highest standard that could be achieved in technological terms at the time. For the first time in the history of Daimler-Benz, a V8 injection-engine was used which delivered maximum power of 250 hp from a 6.3-liter cubic capacity and maximum torque of 51 mkg. In connection with the standard automatic transmission this car achieved a driving perfomance, typical for a sports car. C107 Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC 5.0 the rare coupe S-class, 1980 OldBenz 2023-03-21 | At the Frankfurt Motor Show IAA in September 1977 the 450 SLC 5.0, a new top model of the type range 107 was presented. The great novelty of this type was a 5.0-liter all-aluminium engine, developed from the time-tested 4.5-liter V8 with grey cast iron block. The new engine had an enlarged cubic capacity realised by reboring. It weighed 40 kg less and convinced by a higher torque and a power increase of 240 hp. The series production of 450 SLC 5.0 was taken up in May 1978. There was no counterpart in the SL roadster range. Valuable experience was gained in manufacturing the engines which was not always without problems. Since the practical testing of the production car by customers did not bring any negative surprises and all the 5-liter coupés were evaluated positively by its drivers nothing prevented the use of all-aluminium engines in the high-volume S-Class range. Enthusiasts today estimate that several hundred were built, although exact statistics are unknown. Danish Mercedes 300E Pickup W124s were mostly built on the basis of a standard station wagon, and unlike hearses or ambulances, they have a standard wheelbase, which allowed them to maintain their neat proportions. Despite the not inconsiderable cost of conversion, the W124 pickup ultimately cost no more than a standard W124 sedan. When the SEL was delivered, the customer told Chris that the car was twice as good as the regular 500 SEL and deserved a proper name. This is how the first 1000 SEL was reportedly born. Carat by Duchatelet, based in Liège, was famous for its very lavish conversions based on Mercedes or Rolls-Royce models. After eight years they succeeded to the very successful 123 series estate cars. In technology and style the new estates corresponded largely to the saloons.
