Then, just past the canal’s edge, lies something truly strange: the Purton Hulks, where ships went to die, and somehow stayed to tell their tales.🕰️ Highlights, History & Local LoreThe Purton Ship Graveyard looks like a rusting, rotting afterthought—but it’s actually a deliberate act of preservation. In the early 1900s, the River Severn was gnawing away at the narrow strip of land separating it from the canal. To stop a breach, old vessels—barges, schooners, concrete lighters—were deliberately run aground here, sacrificed as a bulwark against erosion. It shows up in Anglo-Saxon charters from the 900s and the Domesday Book of 1086. Back then it supported just eight households, with locals earning their keep through willow-weaving and sheep-rearing. The land was so prized that it soon caught the attention of wealthy abbeys and, later, ambitious Tudor yeomen who turned the village’s rich grazing meadows into quiet prosperity.The Church of St Mary’s, built around 1200 and remodelled in the 1400s, still stands quietly watchful. It sits in the Hope Valley, surrounded by high moorland, dramatic hills, and rolling countryside. It is easily accessible by train from Sheffield and Manchester. Originally a farming hamlet, Edale has been a starting point for walkers and explorers for centuries. In 1965, it became the official start of the Pennine Way, the UK’s first long-distance national trail.The Grindsbrook Clough walk is one of the most scenic and rewarding routes in the Peak District. The climb up Grindsbrook Clough is a mix of rocky steps and scrambling, following a cascading stream as it winds up the valley. The final stretch leads to Grindslow Knoll, a distinctive hill with panoramic views over the Hope Valley, Kinder Scout, and beyond. A very beautiful and fun walk! No talking, just walking, exploring the English Countryside. Hathersage is a picturesque village in the Peak District National Park, situated in the Hope Valley of Derbyshire. It lies 10 miles west of Sheffield and is surrounded by dramatic gritstone edges, rolling hills, and lush green countryside. Hathersage has Saxon origins and was mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086). The village was historically known for its cutlery and needle-making industries, with local factories supplying Sheffield. It has strong connections to Robin Hood legends, with Little John’s Grave located in the village churchyard. The famous writer Charlotte Brontë stayed in Hathersage in 1845, using it as inspiration for "Jane Eyre", with the fictional Morton based on the village. The Macclesfield Canal begins at Marple Locks, near the town of Marple in Greater Manchester, and runs 26 miles (42 km) south to Hall Green Stop Lock, where it meets the Trent & Mersey Canal. Opened in 1831, the Macclesfield Canal was built to connect Manchester with the Midlands, forming an essential part of the Cheshire Ring waterway route. Engineered by Thomas Telford, the canal was designed to high standards, featuring straight sections, cuttings, and aqueducts that made it a major transport route during the Industrial Revolution. It was primarily used to carry coal, stone, and silk for the mills of Macclesfield and surrounding towns. The canal declined in commercial use by the mid-20th century but has since been restored for leisure boating and walking. A beautiful walk! It begins in the charming market town of Chipping Campden, meanders south through the heart of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and finishes in the historic City of Bath.Join me on this series as I set out to walk and film every single step of this stunning trail, sharing the entire journey with you from start to finish.Part 16: Bath Racecourse to Bath City Centre – 4.82 miles (7.75 km)Continuing from the Bath Racecourse, the trail gently descends past the Prospect Stile, where the first glimpses of Bath begin to appear in the valley below. We continue through farmland and eventually into Weston, where the atmosphere shifts as the trail becomes more urban, bringing us closer to the city’s vibrant character.As we approach Bath Abbey, we’ll pass through its picturesque parks and enjoy views of the city’s stunning Regency architecture. It begins in the charming market town of Chipping Campden, meanders south through the heart of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and finishes in the historic City of Bath.Join me on this series every Sunday as I set out to walk and film every single step of this stunning trail, sharing the entire journey with you from start to finish.Part 15: Cold Ashton to Bath Racecourse – 6.46 miles (10.4 km)Leaving Cold Ashton, the trail takes us down into the peaceful, secluded valley of Lower Hamswell, where the beauty of the landscape immediately makes an impression. We then face a climb to the historic site of the Lansdown civil war battle, a place rich with history. Just before we reach the National Trust property of Horton Court—believed to be the oldest vicarage in England—we climb up to Horton Fort, where we’re rewarded with wide-reaching views across the Severn Vale and beyond.The route then crosses farmland, leading us to the villages of Horton and Old Sodbury. Along the way, we pass close to the National Trust property of Newark Park, offering a glimpse of its beauty. The trail then leads us to the village of Alderley, down a charming, sunken woodland track.From Alderley, the route winds through a tranquil valley, where remnants of Medieval ridge-and-furrow fields are visible on either side. Cotswold Way Walk – Ep11: Cam Peak Hill to Wotton-Under-Edge Daves Walks 2025-02-09 | The Cotswold Way – a truly beautiful National Trail stretching just over 100 miles. It begins in the charming market town of Chipping Campden, meanders south through the heart of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and finishes in the historic City of Bath.Join me on this series every Sunday as I set out to walk and film every single step of this stunning trail, sharing the entire journey with you from start to finish.Part 11: Cam Peak to Wotton-Under-Edge – 6.5 miles (10.6 km)Starting at Cam Peak, just before the town of Dursley, we begin this rainy section of the Cotswold Way, filmed entirely in the wet weather. No beautiful views today. We drop down into Dursley before and then a steep climb up Stinchcombe Hill, offering misty views of the golf club.After crossing the summit, we descend through woodlands into farmland, making our way towards the village of North Nibley. From here, we face another steep ascent up to the Tyndale Monument, we venture up monument which has a predictably minimal view in the thick fog.The trail then levels out as we cross grassland and pass through more woodlands, eventually leading us onto Wotton Hill. Along the way, we pass a unique walled enclosure surrounding trees planted in 1815 to commemorate the Battle of Waterloo. From here, we walk through the woods along the edge of the escarpment, emerging at Coaley Peak. This is a lovely picnic spot with stunning views, a great place to pause and take in the surroundings.Continuing on, we pass by a disused quarry, where the rock face reveals fascinating layers of strata. Then, we venture along another woodland path, leading us into a valley with Cam Long Down ahead. The effort is well worth it, as we’ll be greeted with magnificent views across the Vale of Evesham toward the distant Malvern Hills.As we continue, the trail takes us past the Iron Age hill fort of Beckbury Camp before we descend into Hailes, where we’ll find a charming little church and the atmospheric ruins of Hailes Abbey. No talking, just walking, exploring the English Countryside. The Bosley Locks are located on the Macclesfield Canal in Cheshire, near the village of Bosley. This picturesque flight of locks lies between the towns of Macclesfield and Congleton and is surrounded by the scenic countryside of the Cheshire Plain, with the Peak District National Park to the east. The Macclesfield Canal, including the Bosley Locks, was constructed between 1826 and 1831 during the height of the Industrial Revolution. It was designed by Thomas Telford, one of the greatest civil engineers of the era, in collaboration with William Crosley. The canal was built to serve as a transportation route for goods such as coal, stone, and textiles, linking industrial towns in Cheshire with the wider canal network. The Bosley Locks themselves are an engineering marvel, forming a flight of 12 locks that enable boats to ascend or descend a total of 118 feet (36 meters) over a relatively short distance. The park spans an impressive 60 acres and is situated between the districts of Hanley and Shelton, just a short walk from the city centre of Stoke-on-Trent. Hanley Park was officially opened in 1897 and is a fine example of a late Victorian municipal park. It was designed by the notable landscape architect Thomas Mawson, who is renowned for his work on public parks and gardens in the United Kingdom and abroad. Loch Ness is famously associated with the legendary Loch Ness Monster, affectionately known as "Nessie," which has intrigued and attracted tourists since the 1930s. Loch Ness is the second-largest Scottish loch by surface area but the largest by volume due to its great depth (up to 755 feet). Fort Augustus is a small village situated at the southern end of Loch Ness, where the Caledonian Canal meets the loch. The Caledonian Canal stretches from Corpach near Fort William in the southwest to Inverness in the northeast, connecting several lochs, including Loch Ness. It was engineered by Thomas Telford and completed in 1822. It was designed to provide a navigable route through the Great Glen, avoiding the dangerous waters around the west coast of Scotland. No talking, just walking. Exploring the English Countryside, Aldbourne is a picturesque village located in the county of Wiltshire, England. It sits within the North Wessex Downs, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), about 6 miles northeast of Marlborough and 10 miles southwest of Hungerford. The village is nestled in a scenic valley, surrounded by rolling hills, woodlands, and farmland, typical of the Wiltshire landscape. Aldbourne has a rich history that stretches back to the Anglo-Saxon period. It is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it was recorded as “Aldeburne.” The village played a role during the English Civil War, with Royalist troops camped here before the Battle of Newbury in 1643. Aldbourne is also historically significant for its connection to World War II, as it was home to the US 101st Airborne Division before their involvement in the D-Day landings. A beautiful walk! Exploring the English Countryside, The Daymark is located near the village of Kingswear in Devon, England, perched on a hill overlooking the mouth of the River Dart and the English Channel. The South West Coast Path offers a scenic walk from The Daymark down to Kingswear, a picturesque village opposite Dartmouth on the River Dart. Built in 1864 by the Dartmouth Harbour Commissioners, The Daymark is an 80-foot tall stone tower designed as a navigational aid for mariners. Its purpose was to guide ships safely into the Dartmouth estuary, visible from the sea during daylight. The structure stands as a testament to the importance of maritime navigation in the 19th century, particularly in an era before modern electronic aids. The walk along the South West Coast Path offers dramatic views of the cliffs plunging into the sea, with secluded coves and beaches visible below. A beautiful walk! Rosemarkie is known for its stunning coastal scenery, with a long sandy beach that is popular for walks and spotting marine wildlife, including dolphins and seals. Fairy Glen Waterfalls are located just a short walk from Rosemarkie village, nestled in a woodland glen. The glen has a mystical and legendary reputation, with folklore suggesting it was a place where fairies lived.
