AI Learns to Play The Floor is Lava (Deep Reinforcement Learning in Blender) Moby Motion 2023-11-04 | Have been working on this AI video for a long time, so really excited to be finally posting it! I’ve seen lots of these videos recently, where an AI Learns to do cool things using Deep Reinforcement Learning. I’ve seen AI learn snake, learn to swing like spiderman, learn to walk, learn to escape, and more, and wondered if I could plug in reinforcement learning to Blender. Well thanks to the blendtorch library, it looks like you can! Channels that inspired this include @CodeBullet @aiwarehouse and @b2stud Software used:blend torch (although this link isn’t working for me all of a sudden? Hopefully it’s something intermittent but I’ll keep an eye on it): github.com/cheind/pytorch-blenderBlender!Stable Baselines 3 for the reinforcement leaning. The best models used Soft Actor Critic (SAC), although outside of Blender I’m having better results with PPO.Reflection:It’s important to reflect on ambitious project like this, so you can improve. What went well: a) I’m surprised how capable and robust Blender is as a reinforcement learning environment b) it looks good, because of Blender ray-tracing What can be improved: a) the final agent spends a bit of time in the lava still. Interior scenes are hard, especially in cycles with small light sources and shiny surfaces. I tried eevee, but it looked horrible. I thought I found a decent compromise - I ended up using a littttle bit of "fast GI approximation" and shipping this off to sheep it. Unfortunately though, I didn't have enough samples, and forgot to randomise the seed with each frame. Also was skeptical of using denoising in sheepit, because I was worried about different computers using different settings and leading to flickering, but it's probably fine. Even though this looked horrible, it ended up costing me more than 2 million points on sheep it I think O.O. Topaz video AI was able to salvage it, and youtube compression will help a bit, but it ain't pretty.
