It allows me to practice all my survival skills while it's miserably cold so I can get adapted or used to it a little better. It is also good for tracking animals and some piece and quite relaxation. In this video I set up a tarp low to my hammock to keep warm and a under quilt as well to help with cold air under my hammock, this is a must have in this type of weather with a hammock. I make a warm fire with my 4DB 1/2"x6" ferrocerium rod and Osage Orange striker (links below) this fire is so warm and it allows me to cook my bacon and melt snow for coffee. Freezing Cold Rainy Wet and Dangerous Day Hike with Survival Shelter | Food and Coffee 4 directions bushcraft 2021-01-31 | 4DB survival gear visit http://4directionsbushcraft.comWe got caught off guard on this Freezing Cold Rainy Day Hike we are soaking wet and need to build a quick Survival Shelter. In this type of weather it is dangerous because of hypothermia. I use a simple tarp with ridge line and another thermal tarp to sit on. I make some hot food and coffee with our quick boil burner stove and ferrocerium rod. This helps extremely well to warm me up and change my mood. I explain in detail how to use our Osage Orange Strikers with our ferrocerium rods. I only raise the striker 16th of an inch off the ferro rod and I strike with even pressure. This is the key to preventing ridges or, "speed bumps" in your ferro rod. This was a cold, wet and dangerous day hike. Primitive Survival Shelter | No Tools | Raised Triangle Platform Bed with Roof 4 directions bushcraft 2020-04-02 | 4DB survival gear visit http://4directionsbushcraft.comIn this video we build a primitive survival shelter that is a raised bed in the shape of a triangle with no tools or cordage. The bed is approximately 4 feet off the ground and would be great for wet weather conditions. We start in a cedar thick woodland where we can utilize dead cedar trees. The trees are easy to work with because they are close together with lots of branches to stack other trees against. This type of bio-region is perfect for building bushcraft shelters. We layer the platform with loose cross trees allowing us to sit and lay comfortably. We also build a roof with bracing that allows us to layer tree bark and moss on so that it will provide some protection from rain. The lower part of the shelter is blocked from the back by a simple lean-to and allows for stacking wood or storage so that our wood will not get wet. We use hand drill friction fire to start a fire that will sit out on the side of the shelter. The step up or ladder in the front of the shelter is sturdy and allows easy access to the raised bed in the shape of a triangle. 3 Day Survival Bushcraft - Day 3 | Bushcraft Gold ! 4 directions bushcraft 2019-07-22 | Day 3 of a 3 day survival and bushcraft adventure. Teaming up with Drop Forge Survival for this adventure was epic and we're sure you will agree after watching. On day 3 I wake up early after being up almost the entire night due to lightning and major raining. I procure water and drink some much deserved coffee. Then we go on the bushcraft gold hunt and find some fantastic quality fatwood pine lighter. I pack up camp after a long day and leave no trace. It was a great adventure with many challenges faced along the way. 3 Day Survival Bushcraft - Day 2 | Near Death Experience! 4 directions bushcraft 2019-07-20 | Day 2 of a 3 day survival and bushcraft adventure. Teaming up with Drop Forge Survival for this adventure was epic and we're sure you will agree after watching. On day 2 I wake up early and build a warm bushcraft shelter out of materials I found in the nearby woods. We forged all day for wild edibles and hiked 7 miles to find good fishing. Finally when we were tired and hungry we pulled it off and caught a fish and frog for dinner and much needed calories. Although I took some protein bars and coffee we still relied on nature to sustain us. We finally arrive at camp and set up with fire and water again and cooked our meal. It then started raining and we had a lightning strike right next to us. We caught it on camera and you will have to watch to see how close it was! This type of shelter can be used just about any where and with any type of resources. In this case we used old dead standing oak to build our frame and leafs to cover it. Using this method burns literally no calories to make and will get you out of the weather and elements quickly. This will only be good for about one night stay. If you wanted to make it a little more comfortable you could put additional logs under it to lay on. This would get you up off the ground. Also you can put an additional side wall on it to cover your legs and core body. These types of modifications will help in extending the stay time of this simple shelter. We like to use what mother nature gives us a lot of the times because it doesn't take much energy to build those shelters, they are mostly done for you. Using the sides of hills are nice because they give you a wind break and wall to build additional shelter off of. When you have nothing but gravel, like a river bank, you can use the hill method to build off of. This allows you to construct lean-to-shelters and A frame shelters directly on the gravel. As demonstrated we use raised beds to get off wet ground if you are in rain, swamp or wet land. All these shelters are dependent on what you have available to you. Primitive Teepee Shelter build and Preserving Meat 4 directions bushcraft 2018-12-15 | For 4DB supreme survival gear visit http://4directionsbushcraft.comIn this video we construct a Native American Teepee and fire smoke white tail deer tenderloin for 24 hours. We start by constructing the Teepee with 3 long 20" baseball diameter tree and over under wrap them together we then rotate the middle tree in the opposite direction and set it up to make a huge tripod. This will be the base for our Native American Teepee. We then add 6-7 more trees cut at the same length to the tripod, we don't tie these down we just lean them up, the tripod is strong enough to hold them as you see me hanging from it. We make a raised bed and two smaller seats by stacking wood and notching the end longs so that the other logs will sit on top without moving. We lay fox, deer and cow furs and hides on them so that we can sit comfortably. Our Teepee measures 20'x14"We make fire with the hand drill friction fire by using basswood and Yucca. A hole dug in the middle of the Teepee lined with rocks is used to hold our fire. A smaller tripod and small bamboo sticks are used as a drying rack. We score and break the bamboo with an obsidian blade and tie them into place with bank line. We then cut our deer meat into then slices, season with juniper berry, salt and pepper. We lay the thinly cut deer strips on the drying rack and dry for 24 hours. Do not let your fire get to close to the meat, this could cause it to cook and not preserve. If it does this it will go bad. We then wrap our Teepee in tarps, leaving the top open for ventilation. The top can latter be covered if rain comes. We leave the door open for now but will make a door soon to cover the front opening. After 24 hours the jerky turned out brittle, I believe the fire might have gotten to hot, or too close a couple of times. You really have to watch closely. This is okay because I can re-hydrate it in a little water. It is nice and preserved, this is one way the Native American's would preserve meat. Learn the resources in your bio-region and it will make fire starting easier for you. You can also cover your fire with a shelter or put it in the side of a hill by utilizing a snake hole fire pit. Primitive Survival Shelter | No Tools | Raised Platform Bed 4 directions bushcraft 2018-07-30 | For 4DB supreme survival gear visit http://4directionsbushcraft.comIn this video we make a primitive survival shelter that is a raised bed with no tools or cordage. The bed is approximately 4 feet off the ground and would be great for wet weather conditions. We start in a cedar thick woodland where we can utilize dead cedar trees. The trees are easy to work with because they are close together with lots of branches to stack other trees against. This type of bio-region is perfect for building bushcraft shelters. We layer the platform with loose cross sticks allowing us to sit and lay comfortably. we use hand drill friction fire to start a fire. We lay the fire on a rock layered with clay found from the creek nearby. This allows us to have a fire up on the platform bed with us. This primitive survival shelter only took one hour to complete and would be ideal for one to two nights. With a lean-to of green branches behind it it will protect us from the sun. Making A Survival Bushcraft Table 4 directions bushcraft 2018-06-26 | For great woodsman gear visit http://4directionsbushcraft.comIn this video I show a simple way to make a table a your base camp or bushcraft survival shelter. I start with sharpening one end of 4 woodne stakes. I use Willow in this video but you can use any wood you have available. These wooden stakes can be as long as you want depending on the height you want your table to be. Pound these into the ground in the shape of a rectangle. Using two shorter sticks with V notches on each end, separate your stakes depending on the width you want your table. Then tension of your stakes will hold your shorter supporting stakes, or you can tie them down with cordage as I did in this video. You can use bank line, paracord or natural cordage if needed. Tying these down with cordage will allow the table to support more weight placed on it. This is a simple, fast but effective way to make a table will out at your camp. Building a Native American Sweat Lodge 4 directions bushcraft 2018-05-24 | For great woodsman gear visit http://4directionsbushcraft.comIn this video we are all building a Native American Sweat Lodge to sit in. We start by collecting Willow trees that will bend and keep they're strength. We simply make 6 holes and bury the thick end of the willow trees into the holes. We then bend the willow slowly and tie them together. After all 6 trees are in and we have a dome type shelter we put 2 outer rims on by using smaller willow trees. These outer rims will act as additional support for the sweat lodge its self and for all the blankets and tarps we will put on it. We place a heavy duty canvas tarp on the outside. This will keep the lodge dry and the heat from the rocks in. We dig a hole in the center of the lodge for the hot rocks (grandfathers). The Native American sweat lodge has been used by our earliest ancestors. They used animal hides to cover their lodges and they used the lodge to pray to the spirits of all four directions, father sky and mother earth. Primitive Cutting Tool , Bone Handle and Natural Cordage Scabbard 4 directions bushcraft 2017-10-25 | For great bushcraft, survival and woodsman gear visithttp://4directionsbushcraft.comIn this video I make a primitive cutting tool using mahogany obsidian and a bone I recently found during a long hike in the woods. I start by flint knapping the obsidian to fit the bone handle. This only takes a short time because I choose an obsidian flake that matches closely. I then grind the bone handle to shape it as well. I add a small piece of leather to fill in the gaps when I place the obsidian flake into the bone. I use white tail deer sinew that I harvested last season to secure the obsidian in place. This is flimsy at first but will dry very hard and sturdy. During the drying process I start on the natural cordage scabbard where I use basswood inner bark and red cedar bark to make. I harvested the red cedar bark in approximate 1/2" strips down to the cambium layer so they will easily stay together during weaving. I reverse wrap the basswood inner bark to make approximately 6' of cordage, this will take the most time and resources. I then use a simply, "under - over" braiding or weaving technique to complete a flat mat. This technique is great for making natural cordage clothing, foot wear or other gear like this sheath/scabbard. After I have a big enough mat I simply fold it over my cutting tool and braid the two ends together. I accompany it with a small piece of basswood cordage for a belt hanging loop. This project only took me a couple hours and is it very handy to have for convenience. The scabbard turned out a little long but it is okay as I can use the extra cordage at a later time if I need to. I demonstrate the sharp edge of the obsidian blade which is unmatched as far as sharpness. It slices through leather and basswood inner bark with ease. Primitive Natural Shelter, Survival Skills | Passing the Knowledge 4 directions bushcraft 2017-07-04 | For great woodsman gear visithttp://4directionsbushcraft.comIn this Primitive skills video my son and I hike 2 miles into the deep woods to build a primitive bush shelter. An old oak tree fell and uprooted next to a rock ledge, creating a perfect shelter complete with two natural walls. This allows for an easy A frame type shelter that takes hardly no energy to create. By using dead standing trees you can construct this shelter with no form of cutting tools. Utilizing the the tree and rock wall you also don't need to use any cordage. My son creates most of this shelter by himself and learns how to use natural brush and PawPaw leaves to create a roof for shade. We lay long straight trees down to create a bed and place ferns over them for bedding. We also use basswood and Yucca for our handrill friction fire. We don't procure any water on this outing but instead we drink from our Sawyer Mini water filter. We also catch a few crawdads. This is an easy skill to learn and if you can find a shelter spot that is mostly created by nature it can be a great opportunity to pass down shelter building skills. Primitive Skills: Shelter Building, Water, Fire | NO TOOLS 4 directions bushcraft 2017-06-22 | For great woodsman gear visithttp://4directionsbushcraft.comIn this video I show many different primitive technology skills to build a simple overnight shelter without the use of cordage or a knife. I simply use dead standing wood that can easily be broken using different leverage techniques. I use Muscadine grape vine to secure the tripod together so it will support the weight. Instead of using an and out weave to tie the tripod together I simply turn the middle tripod pole the opposite direction which binds it together. I use green brush for cover on the shelter. The shelter is built around a previous snake hole fire pit which allows my fire to stay out of the elements. To start my fire I use a handrill friction fire with yucca stalk, basswood hearth and cedar bark tinder. I keep the stones in the fire while I finish my shelter for about 45 minutes or so. I allow the fire to die down so I can access the stones. I procure water in a natural stone bowl using a stone boil method. You must use caution when putting stones in a fire, if they are wet they may explode and cause injury. Although the water is a little dirty it will be good to drink. It does have a little coal in the water from the stones which is good in that it will help neutralize toxins. When the water cools and most of the silt has settled at the bottom I can then drink. If I wanted I could flavor the water with pine needles or cedar as well. These would also offer nutrients such as vitamin C. I practice skills all over but here in the eastern woodlands we have many resources that can be utilized in order to thrive in nature. The shelter, water, fire and natural container supplying water only took me approximately 2 hours to acquire. If this were a survival type situation I would have plenty of time to find food as well. The raspberry close to the creek would supply a good food source but the berries have not grown yet. Remember the wild raspberry has a chalky stalk with a 3 fingered leave and plenty of thorns. Primitive Skills | Shelter, Food and Water Procurement 4 directions bushcraft 2017-05-30 | For great woodsman gear visithttp://4directionsbushcraft.comIn this video I take a day out and practice my primitive skills with gathering wild edibles such as Sassafras, Wood Sorrel and Greenbrier to name a few. I make a primitive minnow trap and capture a crawdad. These would be able to feed me if I was in a survival situation. I also find a all natural shelter within a rock overhang and a downed tree. This type of shelter did not take any time or energy to make and would keep me dry, warm and out of the wind. I was able to make a friction fire with a hand drill set and would then be able to procure water and cook food. The hand drill is Yucca stalk and basswood hearth board. For a container I boil water in an all natural container. Making a container with all natural resources is difficult and takes a lot of time. If you can find a natural container and stone boil in it that will save you time and energy. This method works when you have a smaller natural container. If your container is to large it will be harder to bring the water to a full boil. Within the Eastern woodlands there are many resource you can utilize if you know what your looking for. Even though I do bring my pack on long hikes like this I love to practice my primitive skills and use nothing out of my pack, this not only keeps me humble but allows me the confidence to know I can survive and thrive in the woods with nothing but my clothes on my back. In this video I spontaneously dump it out because I was inspired by my hand drill friction fire on this day to go through my kit. It has been 8 long months since my right hand was seriously injured and I've been unable to to any primitive skills. I was successful with the hand drill which was nice but I did pay the price with a big blister just below my scar. In my primitive kit I have everything from deer bones to sinew, pine pitch to natural cordage willow bark. I show how I processed my deer hide and sinew and also how I spall my obsidian for use in making primitive arrows. All these items are great for survival, bushcrafting and self reliance. This 7.79"x1/2" Ferro Rod is exclusive to 4DB and can be purchased on our website link above. We put it through the testing to not only showcase it's durability but also prove it is a piece of gear that can stand up to the harshness of nature. If you drop it, or your bag is dropped it will survive and continue to perform for you. If you drop it in your camp fire you will still have the time to find it and save it. These tough characteristics are crucial for any survival gear but for your fire starter they are paramount! Your fire starter is one of the main components of your gear and could save your life. Our unique testing proves our 4DB Ferro rods are not only efficient and great quality but they are also tough and rugged. We throw it down the trail, throw it off a hill onto the rocks, drop it several times, put it through our conibear 110 and 220 traps to see if it would break and still it didn't break! We then smacked it with a hammer and it did break after the 3rd hit. We finally put a torch to it and melted it to simulate a fall into a camp fire. It did melt after about 3-5 minutes. But you could retrieve it if you did actually drop it into the fire. After melting you can see the high amount of sparks that our ferro rods create. They are very much elite.
