Most of the bees we relocate are Italian or some mix with Italian. There are several reasons for this but without deep diving into that issue I'll say that most of the feral honey bees in North America are Italian bees. Our nucs that we sell have queens grafted from Italian "breeder" queens. They are grafted local to us and mated on our apiaries or within an hour of our house so it's safe to say when someone asks what bees we have for sale they are Italian.Breeder queens are typically lab inseminated with semen sourced from a known genetic line. They are very expensive, usually three hundred dollars up to a couple of thousand dollars per queen, but they guarantee that you are getting the attitude, health and production you are looking for or accustomed to running. Some years I end up with a hand full of old breeder queens that are being phased out for age. I usually just run them in production hives or make splits off them just like normal. Last year I had eight of them and gave them away except for two which are in some hives that I over wintered this past winter. There Are Worse Things Than Honey Bees In Your Ceiling 628DirtRooster Bees 2023-02-10 | 628dirtrooster.com Come shop with us.This video follows along on a little bit of the removal of an Italian honey bee colony and hive from the living room ceiling of a small apartment in a coastal Mississippi town. The whole job took about three and a half hours. While having honey bees in your home is not preferable the folks who lived here were going through much worse.This was a rental property located in Moss Point, MS. This job had been on our schedule for approximately a week before we could get to it. Well in advance of our arrival the property owner had notified the tenants that they would need to leave the apartment on that day for us to complete this job. When we arrived the four people who live in this one bedroom apartment were all lying around the living room watching TV with apparently no plan to leave. Not knowing this was a one bedroom apartment, I informed them all that we would need them to vacate the living room so that we could move the furniture away from the walls and remove the bees from the inside. It was at this point that instead of going to the bedroom they began moving to their little SUV (Ford Explorer) in the parking lot where they planned to stay while we worked. It quickly became apparent that two of these individuals were very sick. The eldest, a man in his late seventies, was suffering with dementia to the point that someone had to take him by the hand and lead him everywhere they needed him to go. It didn't appear that he could talk any more either. The next eldest, a man in his late forties, appeared to be in the final stages of life judging by his color and condition ( he told me what he had but it this point I can't remember). The other two were the younger man's wife and their son. After seeing the condition of these two gentlemen I suggested to the property owner that we put them up in a hotel for the day since I didn't know how long the job would take and these two guys would surely need access to a restroom and a bed at some point. I offered to split the cost for a hotel room with the property owner who in turn declined saying he would cover the whole cost himself. The tenants ultimately decided to go back inside and stay in the bedroom and hallway. The hallway was wide enough they had a cot back there were the old man slept most of the time. Pete and I covered the hallway entry with plastic and got busy. We did the complete removal, sealed the outside wall and replaced the ceiling drywall in a little under four hours if I recall correctly. We never saw the tenants again except for the younger man who came out for some water as we were wrapping up. I believe the older fellow slept through the whole job. I could hear him alternately moaning and snoring almost the whole time we worked.This hive was incredibly healthy and posed only one unusual problem and that was that there were vines running through that space that the hive was built around. It's hard to tell due to the speed of the time lapse but those vines made it a little more difficult to get the combs out.The end of this video has some of my New Orleans pictures from our recent weekend stay. The last video had Elizabeth's shots at the end. I took just over 700 photos and maybe 300 were keepers. By keepers I don't mean they are great or something you'd want on your wall, just slightly interesting to look at. As I stated, most of the videos on this channel are shot on the same day all the way through but once in a while I'll use B roll from other days and other places to help bring a story together or to make and otherwise bland story more interesting. In the end we just want to bring you the best possible content.At the lift job in the beginning of this video we initially thought the hive was in the soffit beside the chimney but it ended up be inside the wall just below the soffit. Access to the hive was incredibly difficult and there was just no good way to video record that job. The two jobs in this video had absolutely nothing in common but I needed video of us welcoming you back to the 628 Dirt Rooster channel where hobby beekeeping is a way of life. I had our intro in that lift job footage that I would otherwise never use so I decided to use it here.The building we removed the hive from was a class room behind Jacob's Well Baptist Church in Pass Cristian, MS. They turned that building into a thrift store and food pantry I believe. We did find a good amount of capped honey in that hive. We harvested it all and gave it to the church staff. Huge Basement Workshop Untouched In Years Has Bees 628DirtRooster Bees 2022-08-23 | Our store 628dirtrooster.comThis property was incredible to see. By request of the family we kept some details private. This is the home of a retired physician and his wife. They own six hundred acres of farm and forest land as well as other homes on the land. The entry to the property is a beautiful winding drive through pine forest with a circle drive around a huge oak by the front door There is a single plank wooden swing hanging from two inch diameter rope on a limb of the great oak that reaches toward the house. The house somewhat secluded and is not visible from the road. You may be able to tell by the size of the walk out basement that the home is rather large. The living area with the garage are approximately twice the size of the basement work shop.We had the opportunity to go through the home to check the floors and walls for heat signatures because they thought there were several hives in the home. I knew going into this job that we wouldn't find nearly the problems that they thought they had. I was told the house had upwards of nine or ten hives according to a pest control guy who had been out to look. I knew this was very unlikely as I have never seen a single property with more than five hives and that was an unoccupied property. An occupied property with more than a couple of hives is pretty rare. The living area of this home was immaculate and somewhat up to date. The garage and work area were just the opposite. Wherever the Mrs. had little influence there was a lot of clutter of period pieces from the fifties through the seventies. and not much of it was junk. You can see one of the items in the photo montage at the end of the video. It was a Westinghouse cooker of some sort on top of a cabinet factory built to hold it. I thought it was a neat piece and had never seen one so I made a picture.We did only find evidence of one hive location but it was apparent that there had been multiple die outs and rehabitations over decades in this same space. It was confirmed by the owner's daughter that there had been a bee problem in this home since the late 80s. When we were done with the removal of this hive we closed the entrance permanently which should prevent future infestations. Customer Thought I Was Being Attacked 628DirtRooster Bees 2022-08-05 | I'm just getting around to entering this description two days after this video went live and there are plenty of comments to sift through. I didn't have the time to give a good description when I uploaded it and really was just curious about how people would take the video without me giving any context or explanation. The comments told the tale. The general consensus seems to be that everyone enjoyed the still shots and the extension cord braiding but it seems I touched on a subject not many wanted to chime in on otherwise except the ones who were really upset with me.I shot and edited this video in a way which I thought would come across as humorous for the most part. Although there really was an incredibly strong smell of weed almost the entire time I was there and this is section eight housing, the video intro was done totally tongue-in-cheek. I did the intro in the Colonel Reb voice, which I thought would be funny. Throughout the video I joked with the tenant, I told a "funny" story and I kept the mood light overall. I guess the majority of people either were cringing at my weed and subsidy comments or simply didn't find any of it it funny at all. Some of my weed smoking friends really took offense and let me know about it in the comments, which I totally expected.In the end it was a fun experiment for me. I don't intentionally stir the pot for the most part but I do like to call things as I see them and I absolutely refuse to tiptoe around every tender subject even if I do step on some toes. It seems these days, depending on who you are, you can't speak truth without fear of reprisal. Box 3552Gulfport, MS. 39505The first time I got to this location it was late in the evening and I was alone. As I walked around the property there was a very eerie feeling. I really don't know why I was a bit weirded out but I went back to the truck and armed myself with more than just a cell phone. I can't really describe the feeling of the place and probably didn't show it well in the video but it was a strange place to be working alone. I've been around plenty of abandoned properties over the years but this one was somehow different. Maybe something bad happened there. Who knows?The main message through this video is to watch your back while working at unsafe locations. No pay day or honey bees are worth becoming a victim. I've had my share of these jobs this past couple of years. Two of them have wild stories attached to them that I may share at some point. Always be aware and careful. After you've got the safety aspect handled then go ahead and have fun.Over all I really enjoyed this job. I was able to take my time, inspect and analyze what I was finding. Since no one was there to distract me I recorded over three hours of this job. That proved to be tough to edit since there was decent footage but it was mostly of the actual cut out. It was tempting to leave three hours of footage in but who's going to sit through that?I took two samples of bees from this colony for testing purposes and got no mites in either sample. I was using 50% isopropyl rubbing alcohol in the Easy Check mite shaker cup. This is the alcohol I normally use and it works fine. We've learned so much about commercial beekeeping hanging out with Darren and his guys over the years. They typically run 16,000 - 17,000 colonies. This year they have grown the operation to 20,500 according to Joel, his crew boss. Any operation this large surely knows which tools are the best and as you can see they prefer the Pierce grafting tool. I did some calculations and based on how many queens these guys produce each year this tool has made well over half a million grafts. This is the grafting tool I'll be using from now on.The hive I split in this video was two separate colonies at some point. I honestly don't know how long these were stacked since they were donated the previous summer after the flow and I never separated them to inspect the bottom box. They over wintered on my yard occupying both boxes the entire winter. Since I've never had a mouse problem at my place I'm guessing this hive was stacked the same way the previous winter as well and the bottom colony failed allowing a mouse to get in and chew the bottom of the double screen divider. The beekeeper who donated this set was retiring from beekeeping but has since returned to the game. He is also treatment free on his three yards and they thrive.As I said in the video, treatment free isn't for everyone however, I believe a lot more people that do treat could go treatment free without much change in their processes. They usually aren't as simple as cutting a little drywall. This colony of Italian honey bees went the extra mile to make sure their location was secure. These bees, or some bees, had been building in this Breaking Bad RV for many years. This obviously isn't really THE Breaking Bad RV but it looks very similar. The color scheme is the same. The dark comb, heavy propolis and dark propolis tracks everywhere are evidence of a very long habitation.These bees were rehomed in a hive placed in the shade of the mobile honey lab. Haha She was very pleasant and ended up gladly paying my price for this removal once she saw what the job entailed and saw the size of the huge bee colony in her wall. Prior to that she thought I was just going to somehow magically smoke the bees out of the hole in the garage wall and go on my merry way. That is why she tried to negotiate the price down by half.I offered the customers the honey but they declined. I fed all this honey back to these bees and the rest of my yard at home. It took them a grand total of about an hour and a half to wipe it all out.This queen ended up being a really good one. We Gave Away 120 Pounds Of Comb Honey 628DirtRooster Bees 2022-02-08 | I enjoy watching other YouTube channels with people who travel or show a bit of where they are from especially if it's some place I may never otherwise see. For that reason I'm again sharing a little bit of our area. The historic home we passed on highway 90 in Biloxi was the home of Jefferson Davis, a president of the confederate states during the mid 1800's. The big white building in the middle of the property was built in the 1990's I think. I know it wasn't there when I toured the place as a kid on a field trip.The marina and light house we visit in this video used to be part of The Broadwater Beach Resort Marina. This was a beautiful property in the 80's. I used to inspect boats there for insurance companies. The tidal surge from hurricane Katrina wiped this property clean including the hotel that was on the other side or the highway. I'm really surprised it wasn't rebuilt. I would love to see it restored to it's former glory one day. I suspect they may have been suffering from a financial down turn in the 90's which is likely why the President casino ended up docked in this marina.This hive removal, while not unusually difficult for us, posed a problem a shorter person may have had trouble dealing with. The back of the hive, or outer edge, was well out of reach of Pete. I could barely reach the last combs. To get to that one you would have to be incredibly narrow to fit between joist or have long arms. Pete is just under 6' tall and he couldn't reach. The average person would probably have to engineer a way to reach that outer framing to scrape or cut the wax off. We also had to be careful no to drop comb. The Day I Fell Through A Deck 628DirtRooster Bees 2022-01-16 | This job here just keeps on giving. We are now in mid January, two and a half months after this job, and I'm still dealing with hip and leg pain from that fall. It's waking me up at night. My injuries didn't fully reveal themselves for about a week after the job. I'm still uncertain of the full extent of damage. I think I may have fractured a bone in my foot but I never went to the hospital to get anything checked. It is only because I've herniated disks in my back before that I know what some of this pain is. Yes, I have a herniated disk, likely from when I landed with my full weight plus forty pounds of tools on my right knee sending a shock through my back.We recently returned from the Hive Life conference where I was in pretty severe pain most of the time but I hid it the best I could. No one knew I was injured except my wife. By the end of day two of the conference I was sitting down as much as possible. We were able to bring my dad to the conference and with the aid of a wheel chair he got to attend most of both days. For a little while I thought I was going to need to join him in a wheel chair of my own. I am now trying to stay off my feet and recuperate. That's tough to do and still make a living but we'll get by. I have to be ready for 2022 cut outs so rest and recovery is my focus at the moment.I have to give big love to Mike Barry and Rick (can't remember Rick's last name but he's from Idaho) for both pitching in to help with unloading, setup and re loading of our booth before and after the conference. Those guys and two other's whose names I can't recall were an immense help. They saved my bacon without knowing the need. I'll share a little of the back side of the life of a YouTuber. This was the first bee removal job that I used the GoPro on very much. I'm still getting used to that camera. I do all my own editing and the combination of footage from my phone and the GoPro added a good bit of difficulty putting it all in the proper place in the time line. I found even more footage when I was done with this edit but it wasn't all that interesting and I figured I had spent enough time on the video already. This one was edited down from approximately one hour and twenty minutes of footage. It took me about an extra hour on the job to video record and nine hours to put this final edit together.With the addition of the GoPro it's looking like I'll have to buy another external hard drive soon as the footage from that camera takes up way more space than the Iphone does. I shoot in 4K on both and video quality is probably comparable except in really low light where the GoPro is not good. I'm not sure I like the fact that the GoPro has kind of a fisheye look even when shooting in linear mode. I know there's a way to correct that in post but it would take time and time is in short supply at the moment. I still have hive removals lined up through December. I don't remember a year when I've worked so many bee removals so late in the year. I've got to get them though. Expensive House Expensive Problems 628DirtRooster Bees 2021-11-25 | Authentic Dirt Rooster merchandise 628-dirt-rooster.myshopify.comThe honey extraction and bottling portion of this video were shot this past summer 2021. I stopped by to help mom and dad with some extracting. Due to the weight of the honey boxes as well as the weight of the buckets of honey they needed a little help. Good memories being made.The hive removal part of this video was shot in late summer of 2018. The Mrs. and I finished the job together and she helped me with the documentation I was doing on this hive. We planned to sell each comb as a whole piece along with a full diagram of the hive showing what part of the hive each section came from as well as all details related to location, time of year, rain fall, blooms and so on. I was so busy with hive removals at the time that I scrapped the project in favor of saving that time to do work that would actually pay the bills. I still would like to do that project at some point but who knows. It may never happen.I wish I knew the back story on this house but I never bothered to look into it. It was a beauty at one time.

Two Years Later Its Four Times Worse 628DirtRooster Bees 2021-10-13 | I have no clue of anything about Frank Lloyd Wright other than what I read on Wikipedia while this video was uploading. It seems that he was a brilliant architect but otherwise generally a turd of a human being. Someone did leave a comment on the previous video of this house that Wright was not a good person. I'm paraphrasing of course. That being said, this is an interesting house. Wright did not design it of course but it's interesting none the less and I was able to tour it with the owner.
