New Aquascape With the Senzeal X7 Aquarium LED Light AQUA NUT 2019-12-16 | In this video, we are setting up our living room aquascape using our new Senzeal X7 aquarium light. This is a tank I wanted to set up for a while but never got around to it. We used Flourite and Dragon Stone to come up with the layout. Once we designed the scape we tested the product to get the full scope of the light. Things like PAR, energy consumption and temps were tested. Considering how small and cost-effective this light was I was happy with the results. It provides enough PAR to work for a low tech planted tank / aquascape without issue. We also added a glass landscaping container from Senzeal in which we put pothos and another unidentified plant we were gifted. These planted tank glass containers are pretty nice and can be used for many different purposes. Senzeal has sent this light over for testing but a $20 light is not going to sway my opinion. The hanging kit is really easy to install. with the light only weighing 7 pounds you can hang the light off of a single hook.This light is an 8 band 2 channel high intensity led light. We put it under our par meter and found that if was throwing so really high readings. each channel was showing a Par of400 per channel with a total in excess of 800 at 12-inch depth at 8 inches above the water. Another test we did was checking the voltage draw. So running it like i am currently it only uses about 10 watts. At full power, we see that it pulls103 watts. So that is a lot of light for 103watts.The last test we put out was a temp test. this Light was at max temp 42C directly on the bottom glass where the top frame was only reading 37C. We Are Losing Our Fish Medications | Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria AQUA NUT 2018-11-25 | We Are Losing Our Fish Medications | Antibiotic Resistant BacteriaAs of December 1st we will no longer be able to access antibiotics for fish keeping purposes by walking into the pet stores or even ordering online. The only way we will have access to them is by going into a veterinarian for a prescription. Finding a vet that deals with aquatic pets in Canada is going to be a challenge. It is very unlikely that your local small vet handles fish related diseases, you may have to road trip it to a larger city and that may be 5 or 6 hours away. Home visits would be very costly as well. Many of us are not willing or able to afford a grand or more on a fish that might or might not make it. Most people don't have that kind of expendable income.Erythromycin and Neomycin are the big ones here or at least the ones we are mostly familiar with. We are obviously familiar with Penicillin but we dont use it for fishkeeping. These 2 are in a few of our medications. Erythromycin packs from api, neoplex and kanaplex from Seachem just to name a few.So why is this happening why are we loosing antibiotics?This is largely due to antibiotic overuse from all types of different industries and applications. Antibiotic are used to treat bacterial infections in humans and animals. The problem is they are being used hastily, before we are certain they will work or for issues that are resolvable on their own. As of 2015, it was reported that over 700,000 people per year died worldwide due to infections that could not be treated with antibiotics. Some bacteria have become so resistant that out of all of the treatments we have available maybe one or two might work, if any at all. This is alarming and is something that is only going to get worse in the future. Ted talk by Maryn McKenna Another issue with the overuse of antibiotics is that it produces an abundance of waste. When antibiotics are taken or used, they are also excreted back into our environment through human, animal waste and runoff. Us fish keepers only make up a small portion of the antibiotics being dumped down the drain but we all play a part though. Waste from large-scale farms, aquaculture and wastewater from hospitals are the huge waste producers here. The more antibiotics drugs end up in the environment the higher the chance is that a bacteria develops a resistance. Not only that, most water treatment facilities are unable to remove these drugs from our drinking water. Even though it is only found in trace amounts, do we really want that in our tap water and tanks? So here are a few things we can do to lessen our impact as fish keepers.One thing that needs to stop is this practice of dosing antibiotics as a preventative measure. This has become really popular over the last few years and it's a practice that needs to stop. We need to treat these drugs as a last resort, not a first plan of attack. Quarantine tanks should be used as that, a place where observation and monitoring takes place. Antibiotics are not vaccines, they will not prevent future problems. By exposing bacteria to antibiotics you are giving the opportunity to the bacteria to build up a resistance. This means the fish being treated are less likely to see results from treatments of infections in the future. Another step we can take is only treating a fish ONLY when you know for sure what the disease or infection is. This may take a lot of time and research before hand, but considering the potential consequences it's essential. Throwing a cocktail at our fish is really not the best way to go about it. It is really hard on your fish, expensive and we don't know the long term effects. Ask a few people before you go out and buy or dose meds if you are unsure.. One thing I have noticed is that everybody is an expert or thinks they are. Don't just get one persons advice before you start treating a tank. After we planted the crypts we move on to some starugen Repens, and redesign the front of the tank. I go on to further explain issues with digging and also the plecos moving dirt. We then move on to swapping Sand to aquasoil substrate.To remove the sand we first needed to sort the sand from the aquasoil, we did this by sifting with a fish net. After that we dredged it out using a hose. The hose made it really easy to accomplish our goal on removing the sand. After the sand was removed we added the new ADA aquasoil in the tank.We then finished with a little trim of the plants that were forming a canopy and showed you my stockpile of Java Fern

Since first planting the emersed growth area for my aquatic plants I have seen a lot of growth explosion among certain species while some are taking a bit longer. So far everything has survived and is all still growing whether it be slowly or very quickly like the majority of the plants in the setup.Some of the species that seem to be thriving are things with larger stems such as AR mini, Rotala Bonsai and the staurogyne repens. While some of the other aquarium plant species like the hair grasses and star grass have all seemed to transition but the growth isn't nearly as explosive. It's been very interesting to see how these species grow both underwater and emeresed. There is a lot left to learn but it has been an interesting and fun project,If you have seen the initial setup, when we first planted the emersed grow out system with these plants, many have come a long way.We added in an additional small grow light to the system.I have taken some of the Alteranthera Reineckii mini and tried putting it back in an underwater aquatic environment and so far everything seems to be going well. Some of it has lost some color in the process of being re-transitioned back in water but that is to be expected, especially since it was added back to a low tech tank environment. We hope to find out which plants will adapt the easiest and which will give us the best results. It's well know that semi aquatic plants grow much better on land then under water. They have access to more oxygen and higher amounts of co2 that is needed for rapid growth. This is a little test to see if an emersed garden is a viable option to mass grow plants for future projects as well as some for profit. One plant in particular, Bucephalandra, is becoming increasingly scarce in the wild due to its rising popularity in the planted tank hobby. We are hoping to help take some of the strain off of the wild collection of this species by farming our own. This is a sustainable way of filling our own use of the plant. Only recently have plant distributors started to farm their own Bucephalandra which is a great start, but more are needed before we can eliminate wild collection all together. How to Reseal an Aquarium | Resealing Our 75 Gallon Fish Tank AQUA NUT 2018-02-06 | How to Reseal an Aquarium | Resealing Our Fish Tank----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Special thanks to Kevin at N.O.A.H. The silicone on the tank was bubbling and water was getting between the glass and silicone. The fish tank would have eventually failed and started to leak or let go and made a big water mess.To start the process of resealing our fish tank Mike removed the old silicone first. A few tools that make this job easier are, scrapers of assorted sized, calking puller and some razor blades. Start by scraping silicone from each side of a seam. Once it starts to lift either use your calking puller or scrapper to remove silicone. Be mindful of adhesive, do not dig out seams as you may damage the adhesive. last step after most of silicone is gone would be to use Acetone to remove remaining traces of silicone from seems. Also note that Acetone will eat adhesive so do not apply to cracks. After your tank is clean you want to start taping your safe area with painters tape. You want to leave a 1/4 inch on each side of seam. Apply silicone in all seams and either use finger or calking spreader to spread to appropriate thickness. The last step in this process is to remove tape as soon as you are done spreading the silicone. It takes about 20 to 25 minutes before the silicone starts to harden up so these last steps have to be done promptly.Allow 24-48 hours for the silicone to cure. If you still smell a strong odor the silicone is not yet set. Allow additional time to dry if needed, until no odor of silicone remains. The last step is to fill the tank. We recommend slowly filling it over a period of 24 hours or more to be on the safe side. If at any point you see large stress fractures in the silicone it may be necessary to restart the resealing process. It usually means it did not adhere well enough, which can be caused by not cleaning the area enough prior.
How to Eliminate Planaria in Planted Aquariums Using Fish Bendazole AQUA NUT 2018-01-21 | How to Eliminate Planaria in Planted Aquariums Using Fish Bendazole (fenbendazole) by Thomas LabsDIRECTIONS FOR USE AS A PLANARIA TREATMENT:REMOVE ANY LIVESTOCK AS A PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE1 x 250MG PACKET OF FISH BENDAZOLE PER 25 GALLONS.MIX THOROUGHLY WITH TANK WATER BEFORE ADDING TO TANK. HIGH FLOW IS SUGGESTED WITH USE OF THIS PRODUCT. REMOVE ANY CARBON PRIOR TO STARTING PLANARIA TREATMENT.MAY TAKE SEVERAL TREATMENTS TO COMPLETELY ELIMINATE ALL PLANARIA PRESENT. THIS TREATMENT METHOD IS SAFE FOR PLANTED TANKS. PERFORM A 25-50% WATER CHANGE BETWEEN TREATMENTS AND REPEAT EVERY 24 HOURS AS NEEDED. ENSURE YOU MONITOR AMMONIA REGULARLY AS YOU MAY SEE A SPIKE WHEN THE PLANARIA START TO DIE OFF. Today we show you an effective way to treat and eliminate planaria outbreaks in planted aquariums and shrimp tanks. We used Fish Bendazole (Fenbendazole) by Thomas Labs to solve our planaria issue which is an effective and plant safe treatment method. Planaria are a carnivorous pest that can be found in planted tanks. They can cause harm to livestock, especially shrimp, so it was something we needed to ensure was completely removed. As a precautionary measure and as recommended by the manufacturer we removed all live stock aside from a few shrimp we couldn't catch prior to the start of our planaria treatment. It didn't end up harming the few remaining straggler shrimp but the die off of planaria can cause an ammonia spike so it's best to place livestock elsewhere during the treatment period. Prior to treatment Mike took a sample of the planaria. He caught a few in a trap he made using a test vial, airline tubing and some meaty food (bring shrimp) He then placed this small sample in a jar that he filled with tank water whenever the tank was dosed. He monitored to see how the planaria treatment was working and when we should be safe to stop dosing. To treat we started by doing a large water change and deep substrate cleaning. We then dosed the Fish Bendazole by mixing 1 250mg packet of powder per 25 gallons with tank water.We then turned up the flow on our canister to ensure that it mixed as well as possible into the water column. Mike then filled the sample jar with the tank water to monitor the effectiveness of our planaria treatment. It took a total of 3 days and 3 treatments for us to successfully remove all the planaria from our tank. The Asian Carp Invasion : The Race To Save Our Great Lakes AQUA NUT 2018-01-10 | The Asian Carp Documentary :The Race To Save Our Great LakesToday we are looking at the threat invasive species pose to our great lake ecosystems. More specifically we are looking at Asian Carp and what we are doing to protect our waterways from these invaders. The race is on to save our great lakes from these species.Asian Carp are highly invasive and the threat they pose is quite real. There are 4 types of Asian Carp; the Bighead, Silver, Black and Grass Carp. All have the ability to damage our great lakes in their own ways. These fish have a hefty appetite eating anywhere from 25% to 40% of their body weight per day. Considering they can reach sizes just over 100 pounds that makes for one monstrous appetite. They eat from the bottom of the food chain eating things like vegetation, plankton and small crustaceans. This takes away food from our native species and can have damaging consequences.This creates a chain reaction effect that causes issues all the way up the food chain. Our great lake ecosystems and the fish native to them will become increasingly scarce if we don't take action.How did the Asian Carp get here?In the 1970's Asian Carp were being added to fishery ponds and sewage treatment plants to control excess vegetation and algae growth. Little did we know there would be massive flooding in the 90's which gave these fish a chance to escape in the Mississippi river basin. Since then they have been eating their way north towards Canada, Who does it impact?It impact many people. The first to see the damaging effects caused by these invasive species is our recreational and commercial fishermen. Not only would they see an impact, but anyone who enjoys spending time on the water could be impacted as well. Should a fish like the Silver Carp become established in our Great Lakes, it would lead to multiple injuries and damage to equipment as this fish can literally jump out of the water. It can reach heights up to 10 feet and considering Asian Carp are not small fish, that makes for a serious safety risk. So what are we doing to stop the spread of Asian Carp?There is a joint effort taking place between Canada and the US to ensure that these fish do not make it into our Great Lakes. Everything from sensory repellents to attract and repel pheromones are being used to try and keep these invasive species out of our waterways. Researchers are even looking into the use of a gene that would make the Asian Carp only produce male offspring. In time this would lead to their extinction in non-native waterways. The last line of defense being used is electrical barriers.They have been used for quite some time now to stop the Asian Carp from reaching Lake Michigan. What we can do, to stop and prevent the establishment of Asian Carp in the Great Lakes, is to report any sightings to appropriate sources. If caught, it's important not to return these fish to the waterways. These sightings and interactions with these fish can be reported on the Early Detection and Distribution Mapping System or EDDMaps for short. eddmaps.orgAs aquarium hobbyists it is our responsibility to be mindful of what we stock in ponds or waterways. We should not be adding non-native species to our waterways when disposing of pets and under no circumstance should we release them into the wild. The consequences can be high for our native species and ecosystems.To much dismay several reproducing Grass Carp have been found in our Great Lakes despite our best efforts to stop them. They are not yet established making this a very critical time to take action. It's important for us all to do our part in reporting invasive species sightings. AQUA NUT 2017-11-22 | DIY Aquarium Surface Skimmer That's Shrimp Safe! 🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿Today Mike shows you how he built a DIY surface skimmer for the aquarium that is compact and super easy to build. It is a shrimp safe skimmer that is fairly discreet and not too bad to look at. Everything was assembled using parts we already had around the fish room. This specific aquarium surface skimmer was put together using an AquaClear 30 powerhead, though any powerhead should work. Mike attached a small chamber he made out of a bottle he got from the dollar store and filled it with a bit of sponge. Attached to the chamber is a surface skimmer piece taken off of a SunSun canister filter intake. It works great and was put together in only a few minutes. SunSun parts are relatively cheap and available online. Within just 15 minutes the build up of oils on the surface of the fish tank was quickly removed. Oil buildup on the surface of the aquarium water is a pretty common problem with planted tanks and can easily be addressed by adding a surface skimmer. The nice part about the DIY skimmer Mike put together is that if a shrimp were to get pulled into the skimmer you would visually be able to see it and remove it from the sponge filled chamber. This keeps the shrimp safe and the surface of the aquarium water crystal clear.
Why Use a PAR Meter in Your Planted Tanks? Apogee MQ 510 Par Meter Testing AQUA NUT 2017-11-14 | Why Use a PAR Meter in Your Planted Tanks? Apogee MQ 510 Par Meter TestingToday Mike tests the PAR results in our planted tanks using the Apogee Instruments MQ-510 Quantum Sensor (PAR meter). This PAR meter is made for use in aquariums or underwater environments and is a very handy tool to have in your planted aquariums. This is not a required tool but a useful tool in certain situations. Why use a par meter in your planted tanks? It can help you fine tune your lighting and give you more information on the most ideal places to plant certain plants based on their unique lighting requirements. Some aquatic plants do better in low light while others prefer high light. You can use a PAR meter to figure out which areas in your tank provide the highest lighting as well as the lowest. This can help you decide where to place certain plants to achieve optimal results. It also helps you know if you need to adjust the height of your lighting and really works well to dial in LED lights to the most ideal setting for your planted aquarium needs. Today we give you a demo of the PAR meter in action on our 75 gallon mega build planted tank, which houses our large Andinoacara Rivulatus cichlid. We are currently using 2 39W Giesemann Super Flora T5 bulbs. We have adjusted the height of our T-5 lighting since our last test and have a lot more plant mass than when we first did a PAR test on this planted tank. During the first test we had used the Apogee SQ-520 Quantum PAR meter which we borrowed from our friend Kevin. The MQ 510 is a bit different. It comes with a handheld reader where the SQ-520 does not. The SQ 520 meter can be plugged into a computer for live results or otherwise can be used to take tests that are stored for later viewing on the computer. Both are highly accurate, easy to use sensors. We were noticing some plants of the same type of plants in one area was doing better than the same plant in a different location. After looking at the PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) results we could clearly see that one area was receiving higher light then the other, which was in a more shaded location. Now that we have this information we can make the changes we need to, to achieve optimal results all around. In this case we can either relocate the plant to a better area or try to cut away some of the dense plants that are providing shade to the area. It's clear that having this tool is really going to help us fine tune our lighting and help decide the best spot to put certain aquatic plants based on their needs.We are also looking forward to testing this MQ-510 with different types of lights. This can also help you decide the most ideal type of light for your aquarium needs. Knowing the PAR results on different types of lights can really help make deciding which type of light to use easier. We have had a t-8 running for several years on our goldfish tank and will be replacing it. We are going to PAR test the old bulb vs the new one to see how much of a loss of PAR we see over that period of time. It should be interesting to see the results.

We show you how we use these types of products to help control, kill and eliminate BBA black beard algae before it becomes a serious issue.When black beard algae is first seen in the aquarium it is best to treat the affected areas right away. The key in managing and controlling BBA is to try and prevent it as much as possible, which includes acting quickly to remove it. This type of aquatic algae is a common problem in many planted tanks and once present can spread very quickly meaning little time before it takes over.To remove black beard algae we spot treat the areas that are affected using glutaraldehyde and a syringe. We are currently using GlutaAid available from theplantguy.ca Other similar products that can be used include NilocG's Enhance and Seachem's Excel. These products work well when applied to the necessary areas and kill BBA dead in its tracks in just a few days. It is recommended to inspect the affected areas well and rearrange the tank as necessary to eliminate as much of the BBA as possible. This type of spot treatment may be repeated a few times if required. Following treatment a large water change is recommended. It is also good to let the treatment set in for 10-15 minutes before changing water. Make sure all filters are stopped prior to treatment.

It is an awesome easy to dose, all-in-one liquid aquarium plant fertilizer that has really given us amazing results in our planted tanks. We have had a lot of success with this easy to use product and so have many others in the aquascaping and planted tank world. Thrive is especially great for planted tank beginners since it is easy to add in your tank and achieve great results. It also saves time and effort for the advanced users making it a great ready to use, easy aquarium fertilizer that takes minimal effort. We started using NilocG's Thrive because it allows us to use one product to manage our planted aquarium where before we were using 5 or 6 different fertilizer products. This is a much more affordable alternative to the line of other fertilizers we were using and we have even seen better results from this single product. Which Thrive aquarium fertilizer is right for your needs?It depends. For general purpose and all PH ranges regular Thrive is recommended. For high-tech tanks with a low PH under 7 Thirve+ is recommended. For shrimp focused tanks, ThriveS is recommended as it does not increase the need for large volume weekly water changes. Both Thrive and Thrive+ liquid all in one aquarium fertilizers contain trace amounts of copper. The amount of copper is so small that it is safe to use even in sensitive shrimp tanks. However, if your tank is shrimp only and you do smaller volume, less frequent water changes, ThriveS is suggested. We also talk about the new Thrive formula coming out from NilocG Aquatics, Thrive for low-tech planted tanks. This version of Thrive liquid fertilizer comes with a liquid carbon additive designed especially for use in tanks where CO2 is not being added. This low-tech plant fert has been a real winner in our fish room and will soon be available for sale. It does not use glutaraldehyde as it's carbon source. It's long overdue some may say but we hope you enjoy getting an update on all of our fish tanks as well as a tour of our new aquascape projects.We start off our aquarium room tour with our Dozer's tank.He is a male Blood Parrot Cichlid. He is housed alone in his 50 gallon aquarium with his Aquaclear110 and a Hydor 350 for filtration as well as a Cobalt 200 watt heater.We move on to our 75 gallon aquascape that houses our Andinoacara Rivulatus "Green Terror Cichlid". It is a beautiful scape that was put together by Kevin over at NOAH and I. For equipment we have a Hydor 600 canister filter 2 Giesemann T5 Super Flora lights with Giesemann reflectors & Eheim Jager 250 watt heater. Next we move on to our 35 gallon German Blue Ram Cichlid tank. This tanks houses about 100 Red Cherry Shrimp 1 Ram and 2 Bristlenose Plecos. Its running a Fluval 404 with skimmer, Maxspect Ethereal Fixtures & Cobalt 50 watt heater.These 3 aquariums make up our fish room. All of our other fish tanks are scattered throughout the house as we continue the tour of all our tanks.Next is my Princess, she is a Midevil cichlid. She is one of our monster fish that lives alone in her 75 gallon tank. She is a really high energy fish and one of my favorites. In her fish tank she has a Rena XP XL canister filter and a AC 110 for filtration. We have 2 heaters on this aquarium, an Aqueon 200 watt and a Cobalt 100 watt heater. Next stop on our aquarium fish tank tour is a simple 20 gallon with a basic aquascape. No fish in this tank as it is more used as a plant nursery. For lighting i use a Exoterra reflector and a CFL bulb. filtration is a simple Aqueon 20 Hang on the back style filter.Next part of the fish room tour is our Goldfish Marley and Tiger Fish. This is a basic 40 gallon with a planted Aquascape. This houses our Black Moore Goldfish and Fantail Gold Fish. Lighting is just stock Marineland T8 light for filtration we use the Eheim Pro 4+ 350 and it does a great job. Last tank that we have to see on this aquarium fish room tour is our Blood Parrot tank with our T.J and Todd. This is Sierra's favorite tanks as Blood Parrots are really personable fish. Today we show you a DIY aquarium fish tank stand built by Brian, from Brian's Aquatics, designed to be accessible to those with limited mobility. What he did was absolutely amazing and something we truly appreciate it and hope others will also. This DIY aquarium stand was built with the idea of making things easier to reach and access for those in wheelchairs or anyone facing limited mobility issues. The homemade fish tank stand was built for a 75 gallon tank and a lot of time and heart went into this project, which clearly shows in the end results. The homemade tank stand features sliding doors making it wheelchair accessible by eliminating the use of a standard door which could get in the way. It also has a slide out for the canister filter with a handle you pull to bring the canister filter out. This allows you to easily grab on to it without having to reach far into the fish tank cabinet. There is also a slide out power bar built into the aquarium tank stand itself which allows you to easily access the power area and turn it off for maintenance. Some of these modifications we actually tried adding into our own stand and many can be added to existing stands to make things easier to reach and access for everyone. SOLUTION to Fish ATTACKING the Glass 🐟 Stolen From the Aquascapers AQUA NUT 2017-10-13 | SOLUTION to Fish ATTACKING the Glass 🐟 Stolen From the Aquascapers🐟🌿🐟🌿🐟🌿🐟🌿🐟🌿🐟🌿🐟🌿🐟🌿🐟🌿🐟🌿🐟🌿🐟🌿🐟🌿🐟🌿🐟Today we look at a solution to stop fish from attacking the aquarium glass due to the reflection itself or nearby neighboring tanks. It also works great for aesthetic reasons, which is the main reason we will be using this option.Often times large aggressive aquarium fish can become stressed from seeing nearby fish in other tanks or simply because they are seeing their own reflection on the sides and back panel of the aquarium. Some will try attacking the glass because of this issue so we have come up with a simple solution that is often used in the aquascaping world for aesthetic purposes. We add the final touches to our Andinoacara Rivulatus "green terror" tank by installing some static cling Frost to the back panel of the aquarium. It is very simple to install and adds a nice background or works well as a side panel to eliminate reflections. The frosting we are using is typically used to create privacy panels on windows or glass in the home. To install the static cling, you simply wet down the area you are applying it to and then use a squeegee or credit card to smooth it, while applying additional water to the back as needed. To get the measurements exact there is an easy to use grid pattern on the back to make it easy to cut to size before installing. It comes on a roll which was more than enough for our 75 gallon tank and was a relatively affordable option. While the primary use of this product for us, was to make a nice background on our aquascape we will be adding a privacy panel to the side as well in the future to stop the line of sight into neighboring tanks. It is a simple alternative to painting the tank or using any other more permanent option. This static window cling can easily be removed at any time should we want to change things up. Adding a Monster Fish to a Nature Aquarium Mega Build🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿Today we get to see if our aquascape will work for our fish or if it will be destroyed by our Andinoacara Rivulatus as he is first introduced to his new planted tank. We have been planning this planted tank build for months with the hopes of providing a more natural environment for our monster fish. We show our monster fishes reactions to being introduced to his new heavily planted aquascape style nature aquarium layout. Throughout this planted tank mega build series, we show you exactly how we went about setting up a planted tank with a large aggressive cichlid. This is not a setup that will work for every monster fish keeper out there but opens the door to new possibilities. Some hardier plants may work in certain setups or even mosses may be possible with even some of the more aggressive cichlid tanks. This particular aquascape layout was designed with our cichlid in mind using plants that have a better chance of working, as well as leaving spaces to provide a cave for our fish. We really tried to understand what our fish likes and needs in his tank to provide him with a more natural environment that would work for him in his own nature aquarium. His reaction was not quite as expected. Keyko, our Andinoacara Rivulatus "green terror" Cichlid, played dead immediately upon seeing the net. When first introduced to the tank he quickly went and found his cave in the back of the scape. It took him a little while before our timid cichlid started to explore his new planted tank environment. So far, we have not been able to get the best footage because everytime he sees the camera he stares it down. On the bright side, he has not damaged any plants and so far seems to be doing well in the new aquascape. It's not often that you see a large, aggressive cichlid in a high tech planted tank but so far everything seems to be working well. We look forward to providing future updates on the planted tank build and our fish. None of this planted tank build would have been possible without the help, support and guidance of many. Water is used to create the siphon and it ends up wasting clean water when draining your tank. Mike comes up with an alternative solution to using clean water or relying solely on gravity.This simple aquarium hack or quick fish room tip will save you time and water at the same time. Using a female Python adapter Mike put together a system using a power head connected directly to the Python. This works great when you have finished your gravel vac or if you are needing to do a quick water change on a bare bottom tank. It is still recommended to use the Python gravel cleaner regularly, either traditionally or by using gravity. This tip will speed up the overall time it takes when you have completed your gravel vac or are just in need of a quick cleaning. In order to modify your Python as seen here you will need;-a power head or pump-Python female adapter-1-2' of hosing it is fairly easy to connect and does not actually require you to cut any hose on your Python itself. it easily attaches as a separate piece. As some of you may know, we are tearing down our current tank and redoing the home of our large cichlid. We look at 2 different lighting options to see which will work best for our needs and the needs of our upcoming planted tank.We will be using the Giesemann T5 reflectors and bulbs on this planted tank project. They currently carry 2 different freshwater aquarium T5 bulb options, the Super Flora and the Tropic. Both have come highly recommended among several truly amazing aquascapers. We look forward to testing each bulb and seeing the results for ourselves.The Super Flora is specially designed for planted tanks and many have come to rely on this aquarium lighting option. We also hear many good things about the Giesemann Tropic bulbs. Which one is going to work best? We will go further in depth later on in the video with the PAR testing results.We went with 2 39W, roughly 3 foot long bulbs over our 75 gallon. Both bulbs put out a higher amount of light as you will be able to see from the par testing results. This planted aquarium lighting option was an affordable option for us. We were able to use some equipment we already had. Mike made a DIY hanging light mount which you will see later on in the video. It came together well and is working as intended.We look forward to putting these bulbs to use on our own tank and observing and sharing the results. We have high hopes for this highly recommended lighting system. Today we update you on what we have been working on in our fish room as well as a mini fish room tour update of our friend Dave's fishroom. In this mega build, there has been a lot of work to do to prepare the tank for planting. Hydor Professional 600 Canister Filter Mega Build Unboxing🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟Today we start the first step in our 75 gallon tank re-build by unboxing everything we will need to provide adequate flow. We went with a reputable brand, known for having excellent flow rates, Hydor.We unbox the Hydor Professional 600 external aquarium filter and show how simple it is to setup. We also unbox the Hydor Koralia 1350 wave maker/ circulation pump. Paired together we should have some serious flow for our upcoming mega build. The Hyfor Pro 600 is rated for tanks between 90-150 gallons. The pump is rated at 345 GPH but true flow rate with media and hosing is 290 GPH. This canister has a pretty large capacity for bio media. It's volume is 12.2 L or 12.9 Qts, It also comes included with all the biological media and mechanical filtration you will need to get started. Chemical filtration can be added, but is not included with the unit.The Hydor Koralia is a nice, simple to install and discreet power head / wave maker. It pushes 1350 GPH of flow, though depending on the attachment you use, could be reduced to just over 1000 GPH which is still quite powerful. We are really happy about how easy it is to install and how it won't be super noticeable in the tank and can easily be hidden.Make sure you subscribe and stay notified of our upcoming mega build videos where we will show you these 2 units actually running on our tank. We are still learning all of the techniques used but i think it turned out fairly well for our first trim. We are in preparations of setting up our 75 gallon with a new aquascape. Mike demonstrates how it's possible to do some maintenance on the aquarium from a wheel chair and shows some of the extra challenges faced with limited mobility. We look for ways to make the aquarium more accessible by first trying to have 3 sides clear around the tank to allow for better access and reach for maintenance. Having room around the tank makes it much easier to maneuver around it and perform chores. We are still trying to find a solution to make operating the water changing system (Python) a bit easier from a sitting position. It is a bit challenging to reach towards the back of the tank and may not be safe for everyone without having a homemade tool to allow for better reach. We would love to hear suggestions in the comments and appreciate the feedback so far.When it comes to filtration, HOB filters are a bit challenging to manage at times where a canister or internal filter seems a bit easier to access for maintenance provided you have a hand truck dolly or someone to help move larger canisters. Sumps may also be a solution but we don't have any experience using them ourselves. There is tons of information available on sumps for those that are interested in further researching it.We also look at lighting. We do not discuss PAR or types of lights to use but we do look at how to make whatever lights you are using easier to manage,without the need to physically access them to turn them on and off. We look at different timer options for lights like simple household timers, to digital timers and we even discuss lights with built in timers. We also look at few different timer systems that use remotes which are also very convenient. Many of these solutions make it easier to manage the operation of any type of aquarium lighting you choose to use. At this point we have setup 2 more aquariums where our kitchen table is supposed to be located. Sometimes these things just happen as fish keepers.About 3 weeks ago now we setup a new 2.5 gallon Seapora Aquarium nano fish tank for our Red Cherry Shrimp. We have been wanting to get a bunch of live feeders for our larger cichlids for quite some time. Breeding your own shrimp or even fish for that fact is the only real safe way to feed live feeders to your pets. It will also keep the shrimps from overpopulating their new micro fish tank setup. We have also added a few freshwater red cherry aquarium shrimp to our planted nature aquarium inspired tank. They have tons of cover and hiding places to be able to live along peacefully with the other semi aggressive tankmates. They are interesting new additions and are a helpful cleanup crew aid, especially in planted aquariums.I am also talking about some of my upcoming projects and how we need your help. We are looking for great DIY ideas and solutions to help make tank maintenance easier for those with accessibility issues. We started out by working on our power cords, easier access to the fish room is a must for our needs. we wanted to make sure that Mike could easily turn on and off the the fish room.. This has been something that i have put off in the fish room for quite a long time, not only did it look bad but was also a fire hazard so that had to be fixed up. On my 50 gallon it was a quick fix by simply attaching the power bars to the inside of the stand. The 35 gallon planted tank on the other hand was a bit more tricky as i had to build a stand for the power bars to sit on. I did this by usig 2 old shelves and made a DIY tower of power. Later on we show you want our fish room looked like just a few days earlier before the big clean up. It was really messy in there, piled up to the ceiling with products we recently purchased. We also give a little update on how the 35 gallon aquascape tank is doing, we added in some Anubis that we picked up from a fellow Youtuber. Frank Moreau. This really does not make this test very accurate. I find both of these filters very quiet none the less)Today Mike compares the Eheim Professionel 4+ 350 canister filter and Hydor Professional 350 external aquarium filters once again. This time we look at how loud each canister filter is when operating under normal conditions. Mike takes a baseline decibel dB reading of the background noise naturally in our house as well as a dB test when the units are plugged in and running.You will be surprised by the results of this head to head canister filter challenge. I can't believe how little noise each unit seems to produce when they are operating correctly. These external filters are overall products we have been pretty happy with it and have other videos on both models. The Eheim Pro 4 + has held up great so far in it's over a year and a half running. The Hydor Pro external canister filter has also been a great addition to our fish room in the last few months. We look forward to providing more updates in the future on the continued status of each of these Pro canister filter models.We were able to find out in this video just how loud these units actually are when running and hope you find it helpful. If you are noticing unusual noises coming from your canister filter, Mike provides several tips on how to troubleshoot this issue. Often times air stuck in the unit can cause your aquarium filter to make some terrible sounds. Also, any dirty internal pieces or unsecured parts could also cause issues. Be sure to thoroughly inspect and clean your unit if you are noticing issues. We met a lot of cool people at the event in Burlington, Ontario. This year the event was hosted by the Hamilton District Aquarium Club at the Holiday Inn. It was a 3 day long event filled with competitive aquarium fish shows, a group dinner, vendor displays and more. It was great to spend time checking out all the contest entries and seeing some other hobbyists dedicated to fish keeping.This aquarium club event is hosted every year and is a great place to get together with other involved in the hobby as well as check out interesting products and contest entries on display. There were a few competitions at the aquarium fish event including a biotope class and planted class. Unfortunately, some parts were missing and it started to leak when we attempted to set up the unit. This canister is discontinued so we can no longer get parts so we are saying farewell with a bang. We did get some entertainment in ensuring that this canister filter will never leak on another floor again. The Magnum canisters were known to be great units and I have heard of several still running today. The key is having all the necessary parts as they are no longer manufactured. Since we are out of options for fixing this aquarium canister filter, we are going to send it out in a memorable way. After cleaning up a mess from this canister unit leaking all over our floor, we are eager to see her go down in the ultimate epic canister filter destruction send off lin our own style. It is one way to stop a leaking canister All in all we did enjoy what we got out of our small investment and it's always nice to support an aquarium club through our auction purchases either way. We want to remind everyone to be responsible with firearms, they are not toys and should not be treated as such. Takashi Amano Style Aquarium Demonstration By ADA Rep AQUA NUT 2017-05-01 | Takashi Amano Style Aquarium Demonstration By ADA Rep🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱Today we bring everyone along for the nature aquarium workshop presentation we attended recently in our local town hosted by the Canadian distributor for ADA - Aqua Design Amano.Together with our local ADA retailler, Phil, we were able to attend this cool aquascaping introduction workshop. This was a very interesting look into what nature aquarium is and how to start aquascaping a nature aquarium of your very own. Mr. Joseph, the Canadian distributor for ADA products was trained by Mr. Takashi Amano himself. He shows the basics of how to go about starting a nature aquarium and the products ADA offers to accomplish this. Mr. Joeseph explains why ADA is so well known for their products and the principles behind them. With this brand, it is all about elevating your aquarium to have it fit seamlessly and stylishly in any room. Everything in a nature aquarium is well planned out and it takes time to master the art and achieve the results we hope for when setting up an aquascape. Mr. Joeseph shows several basic aquascape layouts used in Nature Aquariums. First, he starts with a solid substrate. He adds ADA Power Sand to the back and away from the sides of the tank. He then covers this with a layer of ADA Aqua Soil Amazonia in a thick layer. It is slightly banked towards the back and placed to accentuate the base of the scape. He then adds ADA Bacter 100, ADA Clear Super and ADA Tourmaline BC to add beneficial bacteria , activate and feed essential nitrifying bacteria. It is added dirsctly to the substrate to help quickly seed the soil and help establish the aquarium more quickly.. Mr. Joeseph explains the sizing of the soil and substrate as well as the products that are used to aid in establishing the aquarium. First, he shows a rockscape of a mountain known as Iwagumi. He shows how using the rule of thirds and other design principles one can really achieve beautiful natural results. Next, he goes over another style of aquarium aquascape used in nature aquariums, using a bonsai tree. He shows how this simple decoration can very quickly add beauty to any aquarium. This gorgeous design is simple and versatile. Fish Keeping Trials, Tribulations and Failures AQUA NUT 2017-04-26 | Fish Keeping Trials, Tribulations and Failures🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟Today we talk about the trials, tribulations and out right failures we have had lately as it relates to the fish keeping hobby. We have had several mishaps recently and felt it was time to give everyone an update. We haven't uploaded like usual due to a few of these fish keeping issues. First off, we had damaged our tank brace, which had to be repaired. In the haste of setting up a canister filter that was not sealed, Sierra had cracked part of the brace on our newest Aquascaped fish tank. She also had plugged in a filter on an outlet with a timer, causing the whole tank cycle to crash. On the plus side, the plants are doing well and growing nicely. In sadder news, we lost our pea puffers due to a filter malfunction and poor design. We were able to solve the problem and have since added a fish that will be ideal for our current parameters. We have acquired Gordon Ramsey, the German Blue Ram cichlid. He is doing well so far.We have also seen failures when trying to make DIY homemade fish food. We tried several batches and while we did manage to make some flake, most of our attempts did not turn out well. We had tried changing our recipe slightly from the first attempt and the flakes and homemade fish food did not turn out. We had also tried to make DIY home made gel fish food but again it did not turn out as desired. The gel did not hold together and lead to a big mess in our aquarium. We are hoping to continue tweaking our fish food recipe until we come up with a batch that turns out well and is something we can reproduce. We are still trying to figure out what went wrong in our home made fish food flakes. Stay tuned for future updates!In the meantime we were able to attend an Aquascaping presentation by the Canadian distributor for ADA nature aquarium products. We will be releasing the presentation shortly. It goes over the basics of aquascaping and nature aquariums. In this aquascaping tutorial we complete the build of our planted aquascaped 35 gallon 3D background aquarium with the help of a master Aquascaper. Kevin, from Northern Ontario Aquarium Hobby channel, joins us to build an awesome tank and he shows us all how it's done.We go over the basics of building an aquascape and how to achieve a natural look in your aquarium fish tank.In this two part series we will show you the whole process of our newest Aquascape from start to finish. In the second part we focus on planting our previously planned hardscape. Kevin goes over how to properly plant stem plants and how to attach mosses to your layout. Links are below in the description.We talk about the plants we chose to incorporate in our hardscape and how to aquascape and arrange them to simulate a natural environment. The Aquatic FX (links below in description) planted 3D background compliments the tank perfectly and provided a great area to plant mosses and other aquarium plants. This low tech planted aquascaped fish tank aquarium is brought to the next level with a well thought out hardscape and design layout. The planted 3-D aquarium fish tank background makes this build unique and brings new life to our aqua scape. We really enjoyed learning more about how to plant stem plants and attach mosses to our driftwood and rocks. When planting stem plants it is best to plant them on an angle rather than straight on. This gives more surface area to hold the roots and plant better in place. It is common to see "floaters" or plants becoming unrooted when using a light substrate material such as fluorite (used in this build). While the fluorite will work, it isn't very heavy and we have had a few plants float to the surface. Should this happen, simply re-plant them until a firm enough root base has been established. It is pretty normal to see some melt with freshly planted aquarium fish tanks, as plants adjust and transition to your water parameters. So far we have been pretty impressed with the growth we have seen since planting our first aquascape. It really makes your appreciate the time and effort it takes to set up one of these masterpieces. We had a lot of fun at this event. We met a few locals who went above and beyond to make us feel welcomed.We did find a bunch of great stuff at the aquarium auction. We grabbed 2 48 inch lights an Aqua Clear 110 which was working. A magnum polishing canister filter that turned out to be broken, unfortunately,. We were lucky enough to get a few aquarium plants for our tank though so it wasn't that bad of a trip. It was great to see that Mike from Finatics and Darius from NorthFin had donated some products to help raise money for the Aquarium Clubs.
