6.0 Powerstroke - Metal In the Oil Filter - Tear down and Possible Diagnosis
Everyone likes tearing their engine apart right? So I went to change the oil in our 6.0 powerstroke and found metal on the oil drain plug magnet and then in the oil filter. So you guessed it, I have to tear the 6.0 powerstroke apart and see if I can figure out where it came from. Between my last oil changes the only things that happened were having my rear main seal replaced and replacing our old turbo. Side note the new turbo didn't last a week. Hopefully I don't have to pull the entire engine. This video is a bit long but I wanted to include anything that would be relevant to y'all. So I had to pull the turbo back out, then the fan shroud and fan, then the alternators, then I pulled the harness in front of the engine, then I pulled the oil filter housing, then I pulled the intake manifold, then I pulled the oil cooler, then I pulled the low pressure oil pump gears, then I pulled the IPR to inspect the screen. After inspecting everything I came to the conclusion the metal didn't go past the oil filter because the screen under the oil cooler and the IPR screen were clean. So I took the oil cooler completely apart and pressure washed it and cleaned it. I took the old oil and filtered it over a magnet 2 times, each time putting it back in the engine to flush anything in the oil pan out. I am currently waiting on a new screen then I will reassemble the engine and drive it for 500 - 1000 miles and drain the oil again for a final inspection.
