Today we're talking about Blasphemous, an indie Metroidvania by Game Kitchen and distributed by Team17. We're going to talk about the symbols used in Blasphemous, what they mean, and how I believe they all add up as a metaphor.
We're going to talk about Medieval Spain, the Spanish Inquisition, the Aztec civilization, and colonization.
I'm sure these are topics that are basically barren on the internet, right?

This third person shooter showcases Relic’s unique interpretation of the Warhammer 40,000 universe where players take the game’s signature arsenal of weaponry to deliver bone crushing violence and dismemberment to the enemies of mankind.
Not really, but we'll mix them up.

Trying something a little more casual with my reviews: makes the most sense for my schedule while still allowing me to run my mouth about video games, so it's a win-win.
Lake is an adventure/romantic comedy game developed by Gamious and published by Gamious and Whitethorn Digital.
It's 1986 - Meredith Weiss takes a break from her career in the big city to deliver mail in her hometown. How will she experience two weeks in beautiful Providence Oaks, with its iconic lake and quirky community? And what will she do next? It's up to you.
I played two survival/crafting games last month after a long time away from them. They had a lot in common, except when they didn't.
Anyway, I thought it'd be fun to review them both and make comparisons.
TL;DR - Chernobylite and The Survivors are going to scratch an itch that a lot of us have, but I think I'll only be coming back to one of them.

It was designed by Daniel Mullins: the guy who brought us Pony Island in 2016: another “what is a game really” game that I really loved. And while The Hex doesn’t quite hit the creepy highs that Pony Island did, it’s still got a lot of original ideas transferred into a deceptively simple game.

Before we even get started, I’m going to go ahead and point out that every game in my top 5 made it to number one at some point or another. With the variety and beauty that I saw in games this year, it was genuinely difficult to compare a lot of these. It went beyond apples and oragnes: after a while it felt like comparing apples and hand grenades. Seemingly very different objects: but both do a great job of keeping the doctor away.
So let’s get into it: these are my top 10 best games of 2018.

It’s October, and I spent a fair amount of time this month playing exactly the sort of grimdark survival game you’d expect. A game in which you play a terrifyingly adorable bug as he traverses a mercilessly beautiful island on his way to delivering spooooky mail.
Okay, so nothing about Yoku’s Island Express is particularly Halloweeny, but man is it a lot of fun. Yoku’s Island Express, as I said, concern you: a bug and his ball, as he makes his way through a lush and varied island as its new mail carrier. You deliver some packages, solve some puzzles, and defeat some bosses in what can only be called a Metroidvania-Pinball game.
That, to me, is what stood out the most about Yoku. Even with its beautiful visuals and fun soundtrack, the gameplay style kept me engaged far more than many other games that evoked this sort of twee atmosphere. The little ball you’re attached to becomes a pinball as you fire yourself this way and that, unlocking hidden flippers and bumpers along the way.

The art of the sequel is a delicate one. Do you give people the exact same experience that they had before, hoping they’ll enjoy more of the same? Or do you throw all that out the window, intent on creating something that will surprise and provoke your audience? In games, and most other artforms, the answer tends to be somewhere in between. Expand your horizons, but remember what brought you to that point in the first place.
In this sense, Mega Man 11 is brilliant tightrope walk of the familiar, with just enough of the unexpected to challenge its players.

To start off the 2nd season of Geek History, I chose a topic that I was fascinated with. But in the end, I was completely taken off guard with how deep of a rabbit hole I found myself in!
Today we're going to be talking about Wisdom Tree, Bible Adventures, Left Behind, Catachumen, and many other games that tried to teach a moral lesson while entertaining the masses.
Today we're talking about the History of Christian Video Games.

Right off the bat, Fugue In Void lets you know what sort of experience you’re about to get into with the words, “This is a story of my mind,” followed closely by “This is my mind.” And that little piece of Hot Topic bumper sticker rhetoric was enough to make me want to turn off my computer immediately.
Fugue In Void is an experience about atmosphere. Strange sounds and voices call out to you as you make your way through surreal, isolated rooms and landscapes. It’s really not anything that requires your effort. In fact, Fugue In Void drives that point home by starting the game with ten full minutes ponderous, tedious imagery. In fact, when the game actually got to the part that I could play, I was actually shocked. By that time, I’d almost forgotten that this was meant to be something I could interact with. And after the “this is my mind” crap, this was my biggest sticking point. Ten full minutes of surreal imagery that don’t further the action of the game is an indication that the creator doesn’t respect your time. A game isn’t something that is done to you, it’s something that you play with.

Developed by Proxy Studios and released by Slitherine Limited, Gladius is one of dozens of Warhammer games that have been released in the last few years. Games Workshop is just handing out the franchise like Ork-flavored candy at this point, and as a result there’s been a ton of crap. But if you look at Proxy and Slitherine’s respective resumes, you can see why this one feels like a good fit. Both companies have had their hand in developing plenty of 4X and strategy games in the past, if on a smaller, indie scale.
And that fits the 40K dynamic. While lacking the grander, loftier ambitions of other 4X titles like Civilization, Gladius plays on a relatively small stretch of land: a region on the planet known as Gladius. Gladius is a pristine planet, ripe for the developing, and four separate factions have their eyes on it: the powerful Space Marines, the loyal Astra Militarum, the ancient Necrons, and the unending wave of the Orks.
In standard strategy fashion, you pick a side, and go about building up your forces through strategic city planning, army building, and exploration. Each of these groups have their specific abilities and strategies, and half the fun is just learning the best way to use their weapons to your advantage. And they are weapons, to be clear. Unlike many other civilization builders, there’s really only one way of achieving victory in Warhammer 40,000: Gladius, and that is through combat: either completely decimating your foes, or following the questline progression (a tactic that largely involves you decimating your foes).

I think the least realistic thing about Ready Player One was the suggestion that anyone in the future is going to give a damn about the eighties. I say that largely because we seem to be the ones obsessed with the eighties, and if the usual way these things tend to go holds true, our grandkids are going to be too busy emulating stuff that hasn’t even been invented yet for anyone to give a damn about He-Man or Transformers or whatever.
But in the meantime, we just can’t get enough, can we?
The latest brick in that day-glo colored wall is an episodic indie title by the name of The Outpost Nine. Episode 1 was released today, and while it might not bring anything terribly original to the table, it at least knows its way around atmosphere and making its player abundantly paranoid.
Gameplay-wise, you’ll dance between a somewhat text-based adventure game style, and a visual novel, both of which feel like a good choice for something so steeped in the past. These moments of adventure come at you like climaxes to various storytelling moments, and I thought the rhythm of it all flowed pretty well. The mechanics follow the slowly mounting tension of the story well: even if I’m pretty sure I’ve read this story before.
Episode 1 of Outpost Nine takes place on mining facility crewed by eight people. And just like you know the eighties, you know this story. They’re minding their own business when they meet up with a seemingly abandoned ship containing deadly cargo. Enter a dangerous force that can and will kill you and every member of your crew.
A tale as old as time.

The bad news is that I played more of Vampyr and there was no end of those woes in sight.
The good news is that Dontnod has recently offered us an experience far more in line with what we’ve come to expect from them over the past few years.
And while it’s true that The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is essentially a two hour demo for the upcoming Life Is Strange 2, it was so full of heart and emotion that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it a day later.

In the process of trying to fit several mediocre pieces of gameplay into Vampyr instead of one or two solid ones, we come away with an over spiced dish. The “too many cooks” factor that’s on display in this new horror jaunt becomes quickly apparent, and it couldn’t have happened to a game that I was more looking to.
Released in June of this year, Vampyr is the latest game from indie darlings Dontnod Entertainment, probably best known for their story-centric Life Is Strange series. When I first heard about this one, I was all about it. The story centers around Dr. Jonathan Reid, a visionary doctor and recently embraced vampire. You’ve come home from the first World War to find London in the throes of the Spanish Influenza epidemic, and you must learn to curb or indulge your monstrous desire for blood while healing the sick and attempting to learn about your vampiric origins.
That is just about the coolest idea for a vampiric origin story. The parallels of disease and vampirism have been around since someone first pointed out, “Hey, this Bram Stoker story sure does sound a lot like the spread of syphilis to me.” It’s a bleak and gripping metaphor that has somehow escaped the more popular vampire stories of the modern era, and being able to play my way through a story like that sounded absolutely blissful to me. I was ready for a game about difficult choices with real consequences: the same way that Dontnod had done so beautifully with Life Is Strange.
And to that end, Vampyr does a pretty serviceable job. You travel the various districts of London, meeting the locals and learning about how their various stories all tie together. In true adventure game fashion you work your way through dialogue trees, find clues and hints scattered throughout the nearby hubs, and sew together a patchwork quilt of drama, heartbreak, and occasionally hope. At first glance, I mentally strapped myself in for a lovely story that I could literally sink my teeth into.
And then I got into the game’s combat system. And that’s when everything started to fall apart.

Jurassic Park remains one of my favorite movies and books of all time. My dad gave me his copy of the Michael Crichton novel at the tender age of nine, thus beginning a trend where I re-read this genetic thriller once every two years right up until… you know, I’m actually due to read it again this year.
Of course the film was a landmark event with audiences and critics alike showering it in praise for its special effects, story, and studly Jeff Goldblum appearance.
It would take exactly no time for the video game industry to get in on the dino-wrangling fun too, with dozens of Jurassic Park video games being released for everything from the original Nintendo to the PC to the 3DO. You guys remember the 3DO?
Anyway, there have been a ton of Jurassic Park games, and almost none of them gave me exactly what I’ve been looking for when it comes to the franchise for years: the opportunity to pull a John Hammond, spare no expense, and play god with my own park full of murder reptiles.
Jurassic World: Evolution sought to change all of that.
Developed and published by Frontier Development in June of 2018, I had incredibly high hopes for Evolution. Frontier is the developer who brought us Planet Coaster, that picked up the amusement park sim ball right where Roller Coaster Tycoon dropped it. If anyone could properly translate the fun and danger of owning your own Jurassic Park, it would probably be these guys.
Sadly, while Jurassic World: Evolution has some fun ideas and gameplay to offer, a lot of missed opportunities, shallow design choices, and day one DLC that nobody needs keeps this from being as great as it could have been.

Developed by All Those Moments and published by Ultimate Games S.A. on February 23rd, 2018, Earthworms actually resembles the weird horror of adventure titles like Shadow Of The Comet more than anything else. There’s a classic sci-fi theme of robots, dimensional travel, and tentacles at play throughout the gameplay, and the storyline itself is so weird that it might be worth playing based on that alone.
You play as Daniel White, your classic fedora and trenchcoat wearing gumshoe (who is inexplicably Buddhist for some reason), as you investigate a small town and its bizarre inhabitants. The interface is standard point and click, and I found its puzzle solving a satisfying flashback to the adventure games of the 80’s and 90’s. However, like those games, a lot of the puzzles required such a stretch in imagination that I was left flabbergasted as to how exactly I was meant to solve them without constant help from a cheat guide or playthrough. Sometimes the solution wasn’t spelled out at all, requiring me to just click on stuff until something happened. This is made all the more frustrating by how important items and clickable content tends to blend into the background, making it impossible to find until you happen to hover your mouse over it, often by accident.
That’s a result of the art style of Earthworms, which, to be fair, I found to be charming and unique. It’s sort of a classic adventure game through watercolors style. Imagine Indiana Jones and the Quest For Atlantis or Maniac Mansion with all the edges softened and the colors almost bleeding together. It’s a terrific way to introduce you to the surreal world of Earthworms, and at times I found it both pretty and haunting. But that style makes it really hard to know what it is that you’re meant to pick up and what you’re meant to ignore. I don’t need everything highlighted for me like they did in Maize, but it would help if I knew that that smudge on a rock was a switch and not just a weird piece of shadow. And Earthworms also has a nasty habit I’ve seen in other games: the inability to collect or interact with certain items until you’ve spoken to the right person or otherwise somehow unlocked it. Game developers: please don’t do this. It’s frustrating padding at best.

Originally released in 2013 for PS3 and the Vita, this fantasy hack and slash by Atlus and Vanillaware is getting a new coat of paint on the 15th of May, 2018. And having never played the original, I can say that Dragon’s Crown Pro for PS4 is a terrific way of introducing those of us who never had the exquisite joy of taking part in its particular brand of smash ‘em up chaos.
In many ways, Dragon’s Crown Pro works quite a bit like any beat ‘em up: call up some friends, pick your characters, and stab, spell, and slash your way through a number of strange and beautiful landscapes. The combat is largely as simple or as complex as you’d like it to be, with plenty of options for strategy or just good ole button mashing. Your hits have a nice, satisfying weight behind them, and the monsters and enemies you fight run the gamut from terrifying to just flat out cool.
And your hero characters are… Well, maybe we should just go with unforgettable. You’ve got your standard tropes: your armor clad warrior, your nimble and elusive elf, your witch with a balcony that long ago should have snapped her spine in half like a dry twig with a pair of cue balls stapled to one half…
Jesus.

I play a lot of games for this channel, and when you have enough experience, you can usually tell pretty early on what you’re getting into. Some games you can surmise from their first hour that you’re in for a good time. While others you realize quickly that you’re in for a bumpy ride. Lake Ridden, however, is one of those titles that falls into a strange pattern of both. Throughout my experience playing this puzzler, I found myself unbelievably frustrated and then charmed by its uniqueness, and then frustrated all over again.
Lake Ridden is an indie puzzle game developed and released by Midnight Hub for PC on the 10th of May, 2018. And right off the bat, I had a hard time figuring out what I was in for. The marketing material and trailers I’d seen suggested a horror experience, which Lake Ridden is not. Oh don’t get me wrong: this game has got foggy hallways and ghosts a plenty, but we all know that the presence of ghosts does not a necessarily a frightening experience make. As I played, I started to get a solid Walking Simulator vibe from it. And while Lake Ridden has plenty of notes for you to collect and soliloquies for you to listen to, it’s really not that sort of experience either.
Lake Ridden is, in fact, a mystery puzzle game. And that’s good, because the puzzles and brain teasers are one hundred percent where this game shines. You play a young woman who is searching for her sister who’s gone missing in a mysterious locale with a mysterious past. As you work your way further and further into Lake Ridden, you learn more about its former inhabitants, and the strange events that took place there. And in order to move forward, you’ve got to solve some puzzles. A ton of puzzles.

On my way to Charlotte, I camped out with a man who walked with a crutch. We’d met on the road before, and he asked me to tell him a scary story to liven up the evening, so I told him about a strange, winged creature that I’d seen wandering the woods of New Jersey. He told me about his time in the war, and we parted ways. The next time I saw him was outside of Charleston, where he was literally tearing himself in two.
Where The Water Tastes Like Wine is a game about America, and its folk tales. On an even larger scale, it’s a game about the evolution of story: how a strange, lonely vagabond in a cave in Connecticut can become wound into an elaborate tale about a travelling hobo who walked the same 365 mile route year after year. Like any good story or joke, the folklore travels from state to state, being embellished and molded based on where it is told, or who is telling it. This topic is a fascinating one, and perfect for the medium of video games. Where The Water Tastes Like Wine is not a game for everyone, but those who are interested in Americana and tall tales are sure to find something genuinely intriguing about Good Shepherd Entertainment’s latest indie adventure.
In Where The Water Tastes Like Wine, you play a faceless collector of stories. Literally, though: you don’t have a face. In fact, you don’t have much of anything in terms of physical form. Instead, you’re a walking skeleton, who travels by foot, train, and even hitchhiking on his way across the United States of America. After a poker game gone awry, you’re challenged by a mysterious, wolf-faced figure to collect the folklore of the country, watching as it evolves and shifts. You’ll meet fellow travelers on your way, and the end of your long adventure depends on being able to learn the stories that shaped them, which you’ll report back to the Wolf.
The Wolf is also voiced by Sting, by the way: I’m not sure what, if any, significance that holds, but it’s a weird little tidbit in a weird little game.

And there’s really no way we can talk about Into The Breach without first mentioning FTL. Hell, the developers know that: they’ve put that fact front in center in half of their marketing material, including the official logo on Steam. FTL was something of a real time space adventure simulator with a Star Trek mindset, and its fingerprints are all over Into The Breach, which I would count as a good thing.
Into the Breach is a turn-based strategy game, that has you leading a small team of futuristic mechs against an alien insect race called the Vek bent on domination of the world. “The world” being a small cluster of geographically unique islands that are run by various super corporations. You fight your way from region to region, attempting to protect cities and achieve other victory factors like destroying dams, protecting coal plants, and defending sentient robots that still might try to kill you if you aren’t careful. There are a lot of ways to slip up and fail in Into The Breach, and when you lose, your team accepts their defeat at the hands of the invading Vek by traveling through time in search of another dimension that still might have a chance at surviving. It’s a pretty great conceit for a game: particularly one with this many roguelike elements.
And that’s where you see the influence of Faster Than Light here loud and clear. Into The Breach shares both the try, try again method of roguelike gameplay along with a real love of sci-fi camp and action.
Just like FTL and a number of other roguelikes, as you lose and try again, you unlock new mechs, pilots, and a hoard of special weapons and gear that’ll make your next venture at least a little more manageable than before.
There’s a lot of potential for Into The Breach to be quite a time sink, but it’s built for that, and fans of turn based strategy and exploding alien terror bugs should definitely give this one a look.

“Want me to strip for your centerfold? Well, I’d be happy to, but first you’ll have to find the 20 baseballs I’ve hit all over town.”
I’m not even exaggerating: that is one of the quests you’ll find in Foto Flash.
Studio Gamaii have essentially taken a bunch of the old fetch quests you find in your standard JRPG or adventure game, and made boobies the trophy of success.
And I’m fine with that.
