Nyiragongo, one of the worlds most active and deadly volcanos, could erupt at any time
updated
Epidemics, crises, attacks: Small and large disasters are played out almost weekly in Germany. They range from local fire drills to large-scale scenarios with hundreds of participants. One enters a hidden parallel universe of our everyday life: the world of disaster prevention and research, who want to foresee the dangers threatening our complex world and train how to deal with them. The excerpt shows the various protagonists in their simulations and test runs and exploring human behaviour in the event of a disaster.

In the Swiss Alps lies the underground, highly secure data centre Swiss Fort Knox (formerly Swiss Datafortress). The two former military facilities are located in Zweisimmen and Saanen and are operated by the company SIAG. Companies use these facilities as a secure location for business-critical, confidential data. The facilities are resistant to civilian, terrorist and military risks including NBC and EMP. Since Swiss Fort Know is located deep in the Alpine massif and is hermetically sealed, it is also protected against environmental risks such as earthquakes, flooding, landslides and wildfires.

The film shows the various protagonists in their simulations and test runs and exploring human behaviour in the event of a disaster. They work in the secure laboratories of infection research, in federal offices, on training grounds and in the glass palaces of insurance companies. They imagine possible catastrophes in every detail, no matter how small, in the hope of being prepared for any loss of control. And it shows the dedication of the rescue forces, on whose largely voluntary commitment the entire disaster and accident relief in Germany is based. Exciting insights are revealed, unexpected connections become visible, and so the film also raises the question of the controllability of our seemingly so controlled world and its problems. A film between staging and reality.

The Bernese Oberland in the heart of Switzerland. The Simmen Falls above the village of Lenk offer an unusual sight in summer 2013. Lake Faverges of the Plaine Morte glacier has erupted, abruptly transforming the river into a raging torrent. An impressive but also dangerous natural spectacle. The new phenomenon not only keeps the population in the valley on tenterhooks, but also scientists. Together with geologist Daniel Tobler, geomorphologist Isabelle Kull is investigating the eruption on behalf of the local authorities. The two have installed the alarm system in the lake and want to explore different scenarios of future development in the Plaine Morte area. After all, waterfalls like this one can quickly create flood situations in the valley and thus threaten the entire community.

In recent decades, Canada has become one of the largest producers of oil sands. The boom is particularly noticeable in the city of Fort McMurray. Nowhere is the income of the people higher. But oil sands production has extreme consequences. Gigantic areas of forest are cleared, oil sands are dredged, tar is etched out of the earth in an energy-intensive process, and finally refined into synthetic crude oil. What is left behind are septic tanks and destroyed land.

There are jobs without which our society would not function. Who are the people who keep everyday life running, look after our loved ones, keep the home clean, provide food and enable us to live and work comfortably even in times of crisis? They are people from childcare, cleaning, retail, catering and care.

The common theme of these jobs is the lack of social recognition. Before the pandemic, many of these people were at work as a matter of course and largely invisible. That has changed. Systemically important jobs are now in the consciousness of society, which would not function without them. But what has changed for them? How do they feel about the attention? What motivates them to stay in their profession and what would they change if they could?

For those seeking help in this extraordinary situation, a municipal helpline is established, which receives hundreds of phone calls each day. These short conversations are able to give us a rare insight into the anxieties of those who grew up in Soviet Union and have largely been left to fend for themselves after the fall of communism. The documentary captures the feeling of anxiety, isolation, boredom, and confusion during the pandemic and finds a very simple, but powerful and honest way to do it.

What does a war mean to our ecosystem and how is the global eco-balance affected? Can a modern war be eco-friendly? What does it mean when a military machinery is put into motion, what resources are needed and how much are used?
A search around the globe and through history: The battlefields of World War I are the birthplaces of modern Ecocide. In Norway and Russia a Soviet submarine officer introduces us to one of the best kept cold war secrets: the nuclear complex. In Vietnam scientists laborate on the half a century old dioxin contamination caused by Agent Orange. On the Canadian coastline a Remotely Operated Vehicle leads us to toxic hotspots on the seafloor. In the Baltic Sea we find a German shipwreck loaded with chemical weapons. And a paradise island in the Caribbean gives shocking testimony of five decades of military training.
"Footprints of War" is a film about two antagonist logics: the logic of strength and fight versus the logic of life and balance.

The fishermen, too, are facing imminent extinction. The less tuna remains, the more ruthless the fight for the last of this valuable resource becomes: Raphaël stretches every legal loophole to the limit; his boats have repeatedly been impounded. Roger is one of the few who has stuck to the EU quotas and is now forced to sell his boat. Roberto got out of the business years ago and is now fighting desperately for a fishing moratorium in a last ditch effort to save the remaining spawning grounds.

Since 2009, the value of the bitcoin has varied by several million per cent. The currency has been linked with criminal networks and shady business. But despite the warnings, bitcoin has gone from obscure programme to billion industry. Currently there are about 100,000 Bitcoin transactions per day. In comparison, Visa alone has 4,000 transactions per second. This has led people to question if the system will work on a large scale.

But who is the person and woman behind it all? In this film her close family, friends and close colleagues tell about a daughter, a wife, a friend, a mother, a rebel - that early in life met deep grief and deprivation.
“It is not power that corrupts but fear. Fear of losing power corrupts those who wield it and fear of the scourge of power corrupts those who are subject to it.”
Aung San Suu Kyi is known first and foremost as the political opposition leader at the centre of 20 years of social unrest and turmoil in Burma. What many do not know is that she started out as a British housewife in the upper echelons of Oxford society before she went back to her oppressed homeland and joined the struggle for freedom. Since her return she was held under house arrest for fifteen out of twenty-one years during which she had minimal contact with her family and closest relations. 'Lady of No Fear' offers a close-up of the freedom fighting woman Aung San Suu Kyi and her husband, ‘her knight in shining armour’ Dr Michael Aris, who died on his 53rd birthday in 1999, still unable to see his wife. Together they gave up their normal life and marriage for the cause of freedom in Burma. She comes across as charming, determined and stoical in her decision to fight for her country at the expense of her family.
The focus is on the personal consequences of such powerful idealism and conviction that the current regime can be toppled by peaceful means. The film is a tribute to the woman at the heart of the rebellion, her steadfast husband and supporter, and not least to Gandhi's vision of non-violent civic resistance.

Leila Khaled was the first woman ever to hijack an aircraft. As a member of the Popular front for the liberation of Palestine, the PFLP, she hijacked an American Boeing 707 in 1969. This is a story told by a young Palestinian who grew up in Sweden. What made Leila Khaled become one of the world’s most famous terrorists and the most famous Palestinian Woman of all?

What kind of a person hijacks an airplane? The family of Leila Khaled, fled to Lebanon in fear of the armed Jewish group Stern Gang. This paramilitary unit first came to Palestine after WW2 to prepare the territory for those who had survived the Nazi concentration camps. While the persecution of one nation in Europe ended, the oppression of another began in the Middle East. At the age of twenty-four, Leila Khaled joined a commando unit of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. In 1969 she hijacked an airplane full of civilians in Rome, threatening to blow it up. In the end, no one died, but the world press became interested in the Israeli-Palestinian issue.
For most Palestinians - at home and in exile - she became an icon, something more permanent than a reflection in the mirror. Her charisma also influenced the director, belonging to a younger generation, who went on a journey to meet her childhood idol at a time when she also began to question her earlier views. The question remains whether Leila's act did in fact damage, rather than improve, the situation in Palestine.

No one escapes Guantanamo unscathed. Not the law, neither morale – and certainly not the people. The film tells the story of these people and depicts their search for a life after Guantanamo.
Four people whose biographies are intrinsically linked to the Guantanamo Bay internment camp on Cuba: firstly, a former prisoner from Germany. Secondly, two military lawyers active in the so-called war against terror, who themselves were instrumentalised in the system of torture and eventually plunged into a personal and moral crisis. And finally, the Spanish lawyer Gonzalo Boye, who set himself the task of bringing several representatives of the Bush administration to justice for crimes against humanity.

Murat Kurnaz was released from the US detention camp in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba after five years of imprisonment. He was detained without trial. In the same year, Matthew Diaz, Judge Advocate for the Navy, was sentenced to 6 months of imprisonment for passing on the names of the detainees to a human rights organisation. Judge Advocate Diane Beaver was also deployed in Guantanamo. Here, she became the author of a legal document that would later be nicknamed the 'torture memo'.

There's one thing milk stands for — health. It's seen as natural, nutrient-rich and comes from happy cows in green meadows.
