Parker was originally inspired to write the script when he saw a real life news story about an Irish taxi driver who absconded with a rich passenger's holdall full of money. A friend of Parker showed the draft to Tim Curry who immediately declared an interest in playing the lead. When they met to discuss the project over dinner, Parker discovered Tim had an array of marvellous impressions up his sleeve; influencing Parker to focus on an element of the news story he was yet to explore - the cab driver had been an amateur impressionist. With Tim at the helm and Parker ready to write a piece he later described as hopefully 'commercial because it certainly wasn't artistic' - 'Blue Money' was born as a star vehicle for Tim to shine in. The show also starred Debby Bishop as Larry's doting girlfriend Pam, Billy Connolly as psychotic hitchhiker Des and Frances Tomelty as Larry's long-suffering ex wife.
Join Tim here as he dazzles with impressions ranging from Mick Jagger to Billie Holiday.
The production was remastered in 2016 and released on DVD and Blu-Ray by Network On Air: networkonair.com/all.../2453-blue-money-blu-ray-Tim Curry - Pre The Rocky Horror Picture Show UK Television Roles - 1970 - 1974Tim Curry2021-02-08 | It’s widely known that The Rocky Horror Picture Show was Tim Curry’s first feature film, but it’s often wrongly claimed to be his first ever acting role. In actuality, Tim had been acting professionally for 8 years before RHPS premiered in August 1975 and he had appeared in 19 professional stage productions and as a featured artist in 7 television shows before he began filming RHPS in October 1974.
Although Tim’s professional debut and his subsequent Equity card were secured due to his role in the London stage production of ‘Hair’ during 1968, Tim made his television debut as a background artist in the soap opera ‘United!’, between 1965 and 1967, during his time at Birmingham University. Sadly, it was common practise at the time to wipe videotapes for re-use and it’s believed none of the 147 episodes survived. The following summer Tim appeared on television once again as a waiter, but this time with a very small speaking role in ‘Sinking Fish Move Sideways’ which was originally broadcast in August 1968. The show has never been broadcast again and it is not available for public viewing.
Tim’s second featured role was in the children’s television programme ‘Ace of Wands’ which was broadcast on the 16th September 1970. Again, due to the practise of wiping tapes the first two series of ‘Ace of Wands’, including Tim’s episode ‘Now You See It, Now You Don’t: Part 1’, were destroyed.
On the 27th December 1970 Tim’s biggest featured role to date was aired as part of ITV’s Sunday Night Theatre series entitled ‘The Policeman and The Cook’. You can enjoy a few clips in our video here (warning - spoilers!) or enjoy the whole thing which was recently unearthed by ITV News and uploaded to YouTube: youtu.be/LRoPIw8P4GA
Tim's next television role wasn’t until late 1972 in ‘The Duchess of Malfi’ starring Eileen Atkins. Tim plays the small role of Madman 2 in a disturbing scene where the inhabitants of an asylum are paraded in front of the Duchess to torment her. Originally broadcast on the BBC on the 10th October 1972, you can watch his full appearance in our video here or view the entire production on YouTube: youtu.be/M3NT4lnanTk
More stage roles followed and off the back of his appearance in the stage production of ‘Give the Gaffers Time to Love You’ at the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs in May 1973, Tim was invited to audition for the next small-scale show to hit the Theatre Upstairs’ stage - The Rocky Horror Show. Tim was offered the role of Dr Frank N Furter and the rest, as they say, is history - but this didn’t stall his television career, and off the back of his performance in RHS Tim was offered the lead, Mik, in an episode of ITV’S ‘Armchair Theatre’ in the television play ‘Vérité’ which originally aired on the 23rd October 1973.
‘Vérité’ was written by Howard Schuman who Tim would go on to work with later in his career in ‘Rock Follies ‘77’ (1977) and ‘Video Stars’ (1983). Tim recommended his friend and ‘Hair’ co-star Annabel Leventon for the lead female role of Shirley and Mik’s girlfriend Barbara is played by Beth Porter who would later appear alongside Tim in ‘Rock Follies ‘77’ and ‘Blue Money’ (1985) . You can watch a few clips in our video here or watch the full production on YouTube: youtu.be/v6OvD6--oqw
Tim’s next television job was his first recurring role, Eugene, in ‘Napoleon and Love’ alongside Ian Holme and Billie Whitelaw. Tim started to film the show in November 1973 whilst he was still appearing as Frank N Furter on stage in London - you will see he is wearing a wig throughout to disguise his own hair which was dyed black with blonde highlights for Frank. His first episode aired on ITV on the 19th March 1974, the exact same date as the very first preview of ‘The Rocky Horror Show’ at the Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles. It’s strange to think a demure TC playing a shy 17-year-old in full Napoleonic regalia was being beamed into living rooms in the UK mere hours before his American debut as a sweet transvestite from Transsexual Transylvania! The show was remastered in 2009 and can be purchased on DVD. Tim appears briefly in four episodes and we’ve included several of his appearances in our video here. The region 2 (UK) version is now out of print and as such is priced at a premium, but the region 1 (US) DVD can still be purchased for a reasonable price on amazon: tinyurl.com/fs38c9hh
Tim began to film ‘Schmoedipus’ for the BBC in December '73. ‘Schmoedipus’ aired on the 20th of June 1974 as part of the ‘Play for Today’ series and Tim plays the unsettling man-child Glen. The programme has never been officially released on DVD and after a brief appearance on the now defunct BBC Store, the play is unfortunately blocked for UK users of YouTube so we haven't included it in this video. Originally shared by: youtu.be/oAn97Ov1lsQMy Favorite Year (1992) Promo Clips - Musical - Tim Curry - BroadwayTim Curry2020-09-30 | Tim Curry starred as troubled movie star Alan Swann in the short-lived Broadway production of 'My Favorite Year' between 1992 - 1993. Despite securing Tim a Tony nomination for Best Actor, the show had its opening night on 10th December 1992 and closed just one month later on 10th January 1993 after mixed reviews.
This video, made from clips from the original 'Reviewers Reel', includes a show montage and the songs 'Manhattan', 'The Gospel According To King', 'The Musketeer Sketch Rehearsal', 'Welcome To Brooklyn' and 'The Musketeer Sketch/Finale My Favorite Year Reprise'. The cast also featured Evan Pappas, Andrea Martin and Lainie Kazan.
"The original 'My Favorite Year' was a kind of a male version of “Sunset Boulevard,” in which Gloria Swanson, faded star of silent film, played Norma Desmond, faded star of silent film. Following that lead, Peter O’Toole, notoriously debauched film idol, created Swann, notoriously debauched film idol. For someone else to assume such a role, and in a musical version besides, is an act of courage. Or madness.
“I remember when the notices appeared in the papers that this was going to be staged, I sort of cocked an eye and thought, ‘Oh no,’ ” Curry admitted. “But when it really started to get off the ground and they started calling . . . I figured out in the end that I was scared. So I came.” Curry said that the O’Toole-Swann parallel was “one of the reasons why the film was extraordinarily moving as well as funny,” but he’s avoided the movie, which he saw when it first opened, and is intent on divorcing his Swann from O’Toole’s.
“Not that I haven’t done a lot of the same research,” Curry, 46, said with his Cheshire Cat’s smile. “But it was clear from the way the script was going that the creative team had long since abandoned the movie. And I think there are 10 crucial years here: Peter was in his mid-50s when he did it, and that’s quite different from your mid-40s. And I think the demands of the musical are a quite different thing. “To some extent, too, there’s been a marginal attempt to tailor things in the show to what I can do, just the way, as Lainie Kazan explained, things were tailored to O’Toole in the movie.” Kazan is reprising her film role as Belle Steinberg Carroca, mother of Benjy Stone (Evan Pappas), whose memories are the basis of “My Favorite Year.” Benjy is the junior writer on “King Kaiser’s Komedy Kavalcade,” a 1954 TV variety show modeled on Sid Caesar’s “Your Show of Shows”; Swann, an Errol Flynn character, is to be a guest on the program, and Stone is ordered by Kaiser (Tom Mardirosian) to keep Swann out of trouble.
The score is by the “Once on This Island” team of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, and the director is Ron Lagomarsino, who explained the indirect route Curry’s casting took. “When we were searching for the right person to play this role, I actually looked at the movie of ‘Annie,’ which Tim was in, to check out Albert Finney’s performance,” Lagomarsino said. “I don’t know if this is an apocryphal story, but Finney was originally offered the role of Swann in the movie, and from what I understand when he turned it down he said, ‘This is a role for Peter O’Toole, you don’t want me.’
“The natural thing, I thought, was to start with Finney, but there was Tim. He’s on the young side for the role now, and he was even younger then, but he had all the qualities--dashing, dangerous, sly, with a great sense of style. And he really is a delight to work with. He’ll try anything and that makes it easy for me to test things and see if they’ll work. He’ll go out on a limb. And while he’s very self-deprecating he’s also very astute about what a scene or his performance needs.” The production, both director and star agreed, is in “endless transition” as it prepares for Thursday’s opening night.
“Musicals are famous for being in a constant state of flux,” Curry said. “ ‘Send in the Clowns’ was added just two days before (“A Little Night Music”) opened. There’s nothing more daunting than a musical, but there’s also no more direct line to joy. Getting there, though, is like pushing treacle up stairs.”
Curry’s co-star Andrea Martin, who plays brassy head writer Alice Miller, remarked on Curry’s resilience. “It’s amazing how he can be given a new song--they added a new one three days ago--and do it full out, with that kind of wide open, bravura style. It shows his background, the roles he’s performed before.
“We talked about the confidence that you need in this kind of show,” she said. “How if you’re feeling discouraged or tired, you really have to get geared up. Because doing a character like this isn’t just about talent.” - "Tim Curry's Favorite Year" - Los Angeles Times - 6th Dec 1992Tim Curry - The Rocky Horror Picture Show - 1974 Interview & Behind The Scenes FootageTim Curry2020-08-16 | Tim Curry discusses his role in 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' during this footage taken behind the scenes of the movie in 1974.Tim Curry - Discussing Hair - 1969 - French with English SubtitlesTim Curry2019-11-23 | Tim Curry discusses 'Hair' using his finest schoolboy French during a 1969 interview.
