Fire by bow: Cane only
The objective of this video is to use only cane to start a fire with the bow system.
The use of cane to make the bow and the way to prepare the drill and the board are mostly the novelties we will find. Since I have described and documented both the type of bearing and board a long time ago.

Horse rib for a bow
It’s been three weeks since I took part in a “Paleojornadas” that were held in Estella, Lizarra, under the name of Paleoestella. In addition to organizing the 35th European prehistoric archery and propellant shooting championship, they included a debate around experimental archaeology and another series of activities such as the one that concerns me: making fire by primitive methods.
Activity program here:
visitariestella.com/paleostella-2025
The conferences were really interesting and, of course, there was Joseju. 21 years ago Joseju opened on his own a museum in Elgoibar, the "Hezur Museoa" (Bone Museum). There we can find excellent reproductions of the Paleolithic tools in stone, flint, bone, wood ... all done by him.
The thing is that Joseju gave me a horse rib with animal engravings, prepared to use it as a fire arc and a hedgehog fossil to use it as a bearing. And that is precisely what I do in this video: use them.

Sua: saihets arkua
Izengo dire ba hiru aste edo, Lizarran, Estellan, egon nintzela “Paleotopaketa” baten parte hartzen. Paleoestella izenagaz, Europako XXXV. historiaurreko arku eta bultzagailu tiro txapelketa antolatzeaz gain, arkeologia esperimentalari buruzko mahai-ingurua eta beste jarduera ezberdinak antolatu ebezan. Euren artean sue egitea, niri zegokidana.

Jardunaldiak oso interesgarriak izan ziren. Eta zelan ez, han egozan be Joseju. Josejuk orain dala 21 urte, uste dot, zabaldu eban bere konture museo bat Elgoibarren. “Hezur Museoa” deitzen da eta han topa daikeguz harriz, hazurrez, sukarriz edota egurrez eginiko Paleolito aroko tresneri erreprodukzio benetan ederrak. Dana berak eginda.
Kontua da Josejuk oparitu eustala zaldi saihetsa animalien grabatuekaz. Sue biztuteko arkua legez erabiltzeko eta itxas triku fosila be kojinete modura erabiltzeko. Eta bideo honetan hori da egin dodana: biak erabili.

Aurreko bideoan adelfa-zuntzak (Nerium oleander) erabili nituen arrabola bat prestatzeko, sua izetzeko asmoz. Oraingoan barriro adelfa-zuntzak erabiliko ditut, baina soka bat prestatzeko. Kasu honetan sokaren erresistentzia egiaztatzea da helburua.
Sokaren punturik finena 2.4mm-takoa da.
Trakzio-erresistentzia neurtzeko, maletak pisatzeko balantza bat erabili dut.
Rope with oleander fibers
In the previous video I used fibers from the oleander (Nerium oleander) to make a roller with which to start a fire. In this video I use oleander fibers again but with the intention of making a rope in order to test its resistance.
The thinnest point of the rope is 2.4 mm. To measure the tensile strength I used a suitcase weighing scale. Thus, the method used lacks any scientific rigor. It is a purely indicative measurement.
Adelfa (Nerium oleander) oso landara pozoitsua da. Halan be, sarritan aurki daikeguz lorategi eta parkeetan. Autobia eta autopista askotako erdibitzaileetan be ikus daikeguz. Bideoan erabili dodazenak nire etxetik hurrean hartu nebazan, espaloi baten alboan.
Adelfak eragindako intoxikazinoa intoxikazino digitalaren antzekoa da: janez gero 4-12 ordura alterazino gastrointestinalak, konbultsinoak fibrilazio aurikularra eta azkenik bihotz-gelditzea jasotzen dira.
Landararen izerdiak ukipen-dermatitisa eragin daike.
Adelfaren zuntzak erabiliko ditut errautzekin nahazturik arrabola bat prestatzeko. Ondoren “fireroll” deritzan metodoarekin sua izetzeko.
Fire roll con fibras de adelfa
.................................................................................................

Fire roll with oleander fibers
Oleander or rosebay (Nerum oleander) is a very poisonous plant. Even so, we can often find these plants in gardens and parks. We can also see them in the medians of highways. I picked up the ones I use in the video near my house, on the edge of a sidewalk.
The poisoning produced by ingesting oleander is similar to that produced by digitalis: 4-12 hours after eating it, intestinal alterations first begin, followed by compulsions, atrial fibrillation and finally cardiac arrest.
The plant sap can cause contact dermatitis.
I will utilize oliander bark fibers mixed with ash to prepare a roll. Next, I will start a fire with a system known as fire roll.

First of all, I would like to reflect on the use and divulgation of content that is not ours.
In any divulgation work that claims to be serious, citing our sources of information is essential.
Firstly out of respect for whomever created the content before us and secondly because it gives our work a more reliable and, above all, more serious nature.
For this reason, if anyone has a reference to the use of this material (plywood board) as a fire board for friction fire, I would appreciate it if you would let me know so I can cite it properly, since up to now I lack any reference.
Ezer baino lehen, geureak ez diren edukien erabilerari eta hedapenari buruzko hausnarketa egin nahiko nuke.
Seriotzat jotzen dugun edozein hedapen lanetan, ezinbestekoa da gure informazio iturriak aipatzea.
Lehenik eta behin, edukiak guk baino lehenago sortu dituenari errespetuagatik, eta bigarrenik, gure lanari izaera fidagarriagoa eta, batez ere, serioagoa ematen diolako.
Hori dela eta, norbaitek material hori (taula kontratxapatua) marruskadura metodoarekin sua egiteko oinarri modura erabiltzeari buruzko dokumentoren bat ( bideoa edo beste moduko dokumentua) ezagutuko balu, horren berri niri ematea eskertuko nioke, behar bezala aipatu ahal izateko. Nik orain arte behintzat ez baitut inolako erreferentziarik eta.
Izango dira jada sei urte (2017-1-22) Downeast primitive skills-en (1) bideo bat ikusi nuela sua pizten arkuaren sistemarekin (Bowdrill with Ice Bearing Block) . Kojinete moduan izotza erabiltzen zuen. Izotzaren erabilgarritasunaren ebidentziak ez zuen zalantzarik uzten: izotza kojinete giza erabiltzeko aproposa da.
Urtebete beranduago gutxi gorabera eta daratulo burumotzeen lanarekin murgildurik nengoela, sitema hau burura etor zitzaidan: Beharbada daratulo burumotzak egokiagoak izango lirateke sistema honekin erabiltzeko. Daratuloak gutxiago inkatuko lirateke, beraz, kojineteak txikiagoak izan litezke. Baina hurrengo negura itxaron behar izan nuen ariketa hau basoan egiteko.

Ice as a bearing
It's almost six years (Jan 22, 2017) since I saw a video from Downeast primitive skills-en (1) in which a fire was started with the bow system using an ice block as a bearing: “Bowdrill with Ice Bearing Block” . The evidence of the system's functionality left no room for doubt: ice is suitable for use as a bearing.
A year or so later while I was experimenting with topped drills, it occurred to me that perhaps these might be suitable for use with ice. The drill would not drive in as much and therefore the bearing could be smaller. But I had to wait until the following winter to do this exercise in the woods.
Finally, on January 5, 2019, I recorded the video that I present with the intention of making a comparison: Ice versus Pykrete.

Izotzarekin esperimentatu egiten nuen batera, pykrete-kin gauza bera hasi nintzen egiten: kojinete modura erabiltzea.
Pykrete gutxi gorabehera %14 zerrautsaz edo beste egur-oreaz eta gutxi gorabehera %86 izotzez (6 eta 1 pisuan)egindako material konposatua da. Balen inpaktuak jasateko duen gaitasun handiak Britainia Handiko armadak Bigarren Mundu Gerran hegazkin-ontzi erraldoi baten kroskoa betetzeko erabiltzeko aukera aztertzera eraman zuen, inoiz eraikiko ez zena.
Pykretek ezohiko propietateak erakusten ditu, urtze-tasa nahiko motela, bere eroankortasun termiko baxua delako, baita izotz arruntarekin alderatuta indar eta gogortasuna handiagoa du.
Materialaren izena ingelesezko hitz joko batetik dator, non bere asmatzailearen Geoffrey Pyke abizena eta hormigoia esan nahi duen "concrete" hitza uztartzen diren.

Pykrete as a bearing
At the same time that I was experimenting with ice as a bearing, I also began testing pykrete for the same purpose: to use it as a bearing as well.
Pykrete is a composite material made from approximately 14% sawdust or other wood pulp and approximately 86% ice (6 to 1 by weight). Its considerable ability to withstand bullet impacts led the British army to study the possibility of using it to fill the hull of a giant aircraft carrier during World War II, which would never be built.
Pykrete features unusual properties, including a relatively slow melting rate due to its low thermal conductivity, as well as a vastly improved strength and toughness compared to ordinary ice.
The name of the material comes from a play on words in English, in which the surname of its inventor, Geoffrey Pyke, and the word "concrete", which means concrete, are combined.

Ice versus Pykrete
This video is an introduction to comparing ice vs. pykrete. More specifically, the suitability of these materials for use as bearings.
In this video I continue to investigate with flatdrills and with resources the sea offers us to start a fire. It's an old video that I didn't publish at the time (almost five years ago!) and the truth is that I don't know what the reason was or if there really was any. I have come across it reviewing files and since I have not seen any reference out there I have decided to publish it.
The seashell I use in the recording is a Mactra stultorum, the drill is made of laurel (Laurus nobilis) and the fireboard is made of linden (Tilia platyphyllos).

Me he encontrado con él revisando archivos y como no he visto ninguna referencia por ahí he decidido publicarlo.

Oraingo bideo honetan daratulo burumotzekin eta sua pizteko itxasoak eskeitzen dizkiguten baliabideak aztertzen jarraitzen dut. Sasoiz ez nuela publikatu bideo zaharra da ( ia bost urte dira grabatu nuela!). Egia esan, arrasoia ez dakit zein izan zen. Ezta arrasoirik egon bazen ere ez. Artxiboak berikusterakoan aurkitu dut. Eta ez dudanez hortik publikatuta ikusi, ba ateratzea erabaki dut.
Grabaketan erabiltzen dudan txirla Mactra stultorum da, latroa ereinotza (Laurus nobilis) eta oinarria ezkia (Tilia platyphyllos).
Hona hemen baldintzak:
1- Sahatsa eta kanabera berdea dira dauzkaten material bakarrak.
2- Puntaren diametroa kanaberaren barruko diametroa modukoa da.
3- Latroaren diametroa kanaberaren barruko diametroa baino txikiagoa da.
Aukerak:
Puntak, ondo sartzen denez kanaberaren barruan, ez du aldaketa handirik behar. Punta zorroztuko dut kono bat eginez, falka bezala erabiltzeko.
Latroa, kanabera barruan zabalduko da eta horrela ondo heldu.
Materialak:
- Daratuluaren punta: Sahats iluna… (Salix atrocinerea)
- Daratulua: Sahats iluna …(Salix atrocinerea)

Materiales:
- Punta del taladro: Salguero negro…(Salix atrocinerea)
- Taladro: Salguero negro… (Salix atrocinerea)
- Base: Salguero negro… (Salix atrocinerea)
- Caña: Caña común…… (Arundo donax)
- Cuerdas: Salguero negro…(Salix atrocinerea)
- Piedras: Caliza y arenisca

In this old video again I present another exercise without premade tools. The goal is as usual in this group of videos to use minimal resources to get the most out of it. I will stabilize the joint with a piece of green cane reinforced with a rope.
The specific conditions are these:
1- Grey willow and green cane are the only materials I have.
2- The diameter of the tip is equal to the inside of the reed
3- The diameter of the drill is smaller than the inside of the shank.
Options:
I will make the spindle expand inside the cane using the tip as a wedge. I will make the conical wedge directly at one end of the tip.
Materials:
- Drill tip: Grey willow …(Salix atrocinerea)
- Drill: Grey willow… (Salix atrocinerea)
- Base: Grey willow …(Salix atrocinerea)
- Cane: Giant cane ….(Arundo donax)

This is another recovered video. It is as old as the previous one, I recorded it four years ago.
The material I use is honeysuckle bark.

Sarats-sokaren indar frogei buruzko bideorik ez neukala pentsatzen nuen. Eta horrela da, horretarako berariaz grabatuak ez. Baina orain dela asko beste intentzioarekin grabatu nuena aurkitu dut. 2014an grabatuta dago eta zerbaiterako balio du. Soka honek duen erresistentziaren ebidentzia behintzat, emaitza erabakigarririk gabe.
Sarats-sokaren erabilgarritasuna arkuaren sistemarekin demostratzea bazen nire asmoa, baina erreminta prefabrikaturik gabe eta bertan baturiko materialak erabiliz sua egitea bazen ere nire helburua.
Soka guztiak sahatsez eginda badaude ere, horietako bat, ia osorik, arkua egiteko paluaren azalarekin egin nuen.
Sua pizteko habia, zotzez, azalez eta zuntzez osaturik zegoen. Batez ere daratulua eta oinarria egin nituenean ateratakoak.
Grabaketa txapuza ederra izan zen, gauza asko grabatu barik … eta azkenengo momentuan, sua pizten nengoela, bateria agortu zen! Aldatu nuenerako berandu zen. Grabatu nuen amaiera baina bazterturik utzi nuen bideoa.
Badirudi erabili nuen egurra ez zegoela behar bezain lehorra. Horri nik neukan presa txingarra lortzeko gehitzen badiogu, seguru asko sokak jasango ez zuela pentsatzen nuelako, lau aldiz saiatu behar izan nuen. Eta horixe da, hain zuzen ere, orduan erreparatu ez nuena, eta orain, ordea, interesgarriena iruditzen zait. Hala eta guztiz ere sokaren erantzuna oso ona izan zen, bikaina.

Bow drill: willow rope testing
I thought I had no videos on willow rope endurance tests. And so it is, I do not have expressly recorded videos for it. But I have found one recorded long ago and with another intention. I recorded it in 2014 and it can be of some use, if only as evidence of its resistance, without conclusive results.
One of my intentions was to demonstrate the suitability of willow rope for use with the bow system. But among my objectives was also to make fire without prefabricated tools and with materials found “in situ”.
Although all the strings are made with willow bark, in one of them I used the bark of the stick which I would later use as a bow.
The nest for lighting was made up of fibers, fine chips and bark obtained to a large extent in the preparation of the drill and the base.
The recording was a real fudge, unrecorded stuff… and at the last moment when I was lighting the fire, the battery runs out! By the time I was able to change it it was already late. I recorded the end showing the material but left the video cornered.
The wood I used was not dry enough. If we add to this the rush to get the ember (very short friction times), surely because I doubted the resistance of the rope, made me have to try it up to four times. The rope response was truly good, excellent. And it is precisely this that I did not notice then and now, however, I find the most interesting.
Udaberrian, eskura dugun baliabide oso ona eta ugaria dira sasiak. Soka ederrak egin daitezke kimu berrien azalarekin.
Hilabete bat geroago erabili nuen soka hau, bideo hauetan ikus daiteke: Fuego Mapuche / Maputxeen sua/ Mapuche fire.

Bramble rope (Rubus)
In spring the brambles are a good resource that we have very close at hand. Good strings can be made from the bark of the new shoots.
I used this rope later in this video: : Fuego Mapuche / Maputxeen sua/ Mapuche fire.

Gauden egoeran, konfinamendu sasoian, bazterturik eduki ditugun gauzak berreskuratzeko aukera dugu. Fitxategi zaharren artean nabigatzen egon naiz eta grabaketa zahar batzuk aurkitu ditut, gainera batzuk erdi editatuak. Horretariko batzuk sokekin erlazionaturik daude, fibra ezberdinekin egindako sokekin.
Lehenengo bideo hau 2014koa da eta saratsaren azala erabili nuen soka prestatzeko. Geroago beste bideo baten ”Falka diedrikoa sokagaz (XII)” bideoan hain zuzen, honelako soka bat erabili nuen sua pizteko:

Willow rope (Salix caprea)
In these times, days of confinement, we have the opportunity to recover things we had laid aside. I have been browsing through old files and have found old recordings that I had forgotten. Some in even half-edited. Several related to the use of different fibers in the production of ropes.
This first video is from 2014, I used willow bark to prepare the rope. Later in another video, in “Dihedrical wedge with a rope (XII)” I used a similar rope:

He estado navegando entre viejos archivos y he encontrado viejas grabaciones que tenía olvidadas. Alguna a medio editar incluso.

Hain ondo mantentzen diren fibrak txikitu barik biraketa higidurarekin eta hain ondo ere arrabolaren forma mantentzen dutenak, zergatik ez dira sutze-tenperaturara heltzen? 1-Ez dutelako elkar nahiko marruskatzen gozoegiak direlako beharbada, eta orduan ezinezkoa delako? 2-Fire roll prozesuan akatsen bat egiten dudalako? 3-Edo erabiltzen dudan kotoia garbiegi eta tratatua dagolako?
Zerbait argitzeko asmoz derrigorrezkoa zen hirugarren galderari erantzuna ematen saiatzea. Kotoi naturala, manipulatu barik, erabiltzea.
Hona hemen emaitza.
...................................................................................................
COTTON AND FIRE ROLL
It has always been a mystery to me to know what is the reason why cotton alone is not enough to start a fire with this system. A material that keeps its fibers together so well with the rotational movement and that keeps the shape of the roller equally well, why doesn't it reach the ignition temperature? 1- Perhaps because their fibers are too soft and do not rub each other enough and therefore it is not possible? 2- Because I make a mistake in the process? 3- Or is it because the cotton I use, sanitary, is treated in some way and too "clean"?
With the intention of clarifying something, it was necessary to try to answer the third question, to use natural cotton, unmanipulated, directly from the flower.
This is the result.
............................................................................................................................
But not everything are advantages. While some other fibers are suitable for use without the addition of any other substance, this is not the case with cotton. Sanitary cotton, probably due to the cleaning process to which it is subjected, must be mixed with some additive. It is usual to mix it with ashes, but it is also possible to do it with iron oxide or with some ocher for example (1). In this field the experiments carried out by Boggy Creek Beast (2) and David West (3) have done a great job using many substances.
The big problem of using these substances is to carry them, dispose of them. Well, now I would like to present another substance that we can add to cotton and that we always carry with us: blood.

Odola eta sua
Kotoia, arrabola edo “fireroll” sistemarekin erabiltzeko materialik egokiena izan daiteke. Erabiltzeko errezena, eraginkorrena beharbada. Beste moduko landare-fibra gehienekin konparatuz, ondo trinkotzen da behar duen forma mantenduz bira-mugimendua errazteko. Beste aldetik, nahiko erraz aurkitu dezakegun materiala da, makillajea kentzeko diskoak, tanpoiak, edo farmazietan saltzen dutena adibidez.
Baina dena ez dira abantailak izango, beste landare-fibra batzuk soilik erabiliz gero sua izetzeko egokiak badira, kotoiarekin ez da horrela izango, ezin erabil daitezke soilik. Kotoi sanitarioa, agian araztuegi edo lar garbi dagolako prozesatu ondoren, nahastu egin behar dugu beste gehigarri bategaz. Orohar, ohiko prozeduran errautsak erabiltzen dira, baina beste substantzia arruntak ere erabil ditzakegu gehigarritzat, okrea eta ugerra esate baterako (1). Honi buruz lan ederra egin dute Boggy Creek Beast-ek (2) eta David West-ek (3) substantzia gehigarri askorekin esperimentatuz.
Gehigarri guzti honen arazoa, aldean edukitzea da. Bada oraingoan, beste gehigarri bat nahiko nuke aurkeztu, beti aldean duguna: Odola.

I had news of this technique. For example, the article published by Chris Byrd (1) on the AlderleafWilderness College website:
Hand Drill Fire (December 2007)
wildernesscollege.com/hand-drill-fire.html
But I had nothing clear, so I had never tried to put it into practice until I saw some videos on the subject. The first video I discovered about this technique was the one published by LearnBushcraft (3). This:
Bushcraft Floating Hand Drill
(December 23, 2008)

Then I found this one, published almost a year earlier, on the loosanarrow (2) channel:
Hand Drill Friction Fire Starting Ignition Floating Method
(February 17, 2008)
youtube.com/watch?v=WL0EkZ-xWMU
Since then there are many videos that have been published. But the work of Boggy Creek Beast (4) in the difusion of this technique deserves to be cited. Among others, he has published a video applying this technique and using the smallest spindle I have ever seen (4.6cm). This is the video:
Floating Hand Drill - 1 and 7/8 inch spindle - my shortest floating hand drill friction fire (March 7, 2016)
youtube.com/watch?v=OHyiV1FM9DA&t=3s
My intention now is to retrieve and publish some of those videos that I recorded. In the first two, which I present at the same time, you can see how I started with this technique.

This is not a new method, but another way of applying already known techniques. Actually it is a mix, a hybrid method:
- I will use a drill that is usually used with the bow method. That is, quite thick and short
- To rotate the drill I will use only my hands, using it as a hand drill.
- To press and hold the drill I will use a mouth bearing.
Materials:
- Drill: .................................... ……….... Ivy (Hedera helix)
- Board: ........................................ ... .Tile (Tilia platyphyllos)
- Mouth bearing ................................ Hazel (Corylus avellana)

Hau ez da metodo barria, ezagunak diren teknika batzuk beste modura aplikatuak baino. Izatez nahasketa bat da, metodo hibridoa:
- Erabiliko dudan daratulua, arku metodoan erabiltzen den modukoa izango da, nahiko lodia eta laburra.
- Daratulua biraka ipintzeko eskuak baino ez ditut erabiliko, beraz esku daratulua moduan.
- Daratulua eusteko eta presioa egiteko, aho- kojinetea erabiliko dut.

Materiales:

- Base: ………………………………….….Tilo (Tilia platyphyllos)
- Cojinete de boca……………………Avellano (Corylus avellana)

The cave is a small cavity with a short depth that has a small oval shaped entrance (45x65 cm), so its location is not easy to find in the thick vegetation.
I knew about its existence, though I had never been there. During the “Bombing of Gernika” it was used as a refuge by a family that lived in a farmhouse nearby, and this was the reason that pushed me to do an intervention there.
I visited the cave for the first time at an afternoon together with a friend of the speleology group. I wanted to visit the place and take some photos. My first intention was to do the intervention in the interior of the cave, the place in which that family took refuge. When we found it I felt as if it was watching us. I went inside to see what “the cave saw”: some trees and the sky. I felt and understood that that was the key to the intervention. It was a special feeling; I could feel it in my guts… It was exciting to be there. While I was inside, a rumble of a plane engine left me breathless. Horrifying.
.............................................................
Jagolea, 2017ko abenduan koban eginiko interbentzioa da.
Haitzuloa, garapen laburreko eta neurri txikiko sarrera obalatua (65x45cm) duen galeria bakarra da. Sarrera txikia denez, baso barruan aurkitzea ez da bat ere erraza.
Bertan egona ez nintzen arren, banekien existitzen zela. Gernika bonbardatu zutenean, alboan dagoen baserrikoek babesleku modura erabili zuten eta honek bultzatu ninduen bertan interbentzio bat egitera; lekuak duen sinbologia hain zuzen ere.
Espeleologia taldeko lagun bategaz bisitatu nuen koba lehen aldiz. Lekua ezagutu eta argazki batzuk atera nahi nituen. Nire lehenengo ideia barruko espazioan eskuhartzea zen, gerra sasoian familia hura okupatu eta bizi izandako espazioa. Aurkitu genuenean, guri begira zegoela iruditu zitzaidan. Prestu sartu nintzen barrura, Kobak, zer “ikusten” zuen neuk ere ikusteko. Zuhaixka batzuk eta zerua. Une horretan sentitu nuen interbentzioaren gakoa. Aparteko sentsazioa izan zen, ez dakit, sabelaren errainetan zerbait... Hunkigarria zen egoera. Oraindik barruan nengoela, bapatean, abioi baten orroak arnasa barik utzi ninduen. Ikaragarria.

Aterrador.
With this video I want to continue with the use of guides and different bearings. Its use gives us the option of using a large variation of bearings.
In this exercise I again deviate from the "paleo" line. But I think that it’s a valid proposal in another area.
I have seen the incorporation of small concave pieces, especially metal, in the handles of knifes to use them as bearings. But I have never seen the knife blade used as such. In this video I put this idea into practice.

Sua aizto eta patata batekin
Bideo honetan bai kojinete bai gida ezberdinen erabilerarekin jarraitzea da nire asmoa. Honek, gidak erabiltzeak, eskeintza zabala ematen digu arkuaren sistemarekin sua izetzeko.
Ariketa honetan barriro desbideratzen naiz ”paleo” lerrotik. Baina beste giro batean beharbada, baliagarria litzateke proposamena.
Inoiz ikusi ditut, kojinete legez erabiltzeko asmoz, pieza ahurrak, batez ere metalezkoa, aiztoaren astan inketa. Baina sekula ez dudana ikusi da aiztoaren orria lan hau egiteko. Ideia hori bideo honetan gauzatzen dut.

The acorn, in addition to being an interesting food resource in our culture, can also be used as a bearing for the bowdrill fire system. This time I use it with a guide made with clematis. For the base I use the friction system in the head, more specifically the ring system (you can see it in the playlist: youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6NMw0LQrV-Yv4SBy8KgOq2nAVfVnw1_M )
In this exercise I return to the line that I have been following lately, that is: to use the minimum of modern elements and tools. In fact, the only thing that is not made with "paleo" technology is the bow. The rest, both ropes and base and drill, have been made with natural fibers, stones and flakes of flint.
Materials:
Drill ...................................... Laurel (Laurus nobilis)
Board ....................................Laurel (Laurus nobilis)

Rope for the embers ........... Clematis (Clematis vitalba)
Tools ……………………………… .. Flint and limestone

Sua aihen zuria eta ezkur batekin.
Gure kulturan ezkurrak elikatzeko baliabide garrantzitsua izan dira. Baina horretaz gain, sua egiteko ere erabil daitezke, kojinete moduan arku sisteman. Oraingo bideo honetan, ezkurrarekin batera aihen zuriz egindako gida bat erabiliko dut. Oinarrian eraztunaren sistema erabiliko dut, sua testan (erreprodukzio zerrenda esteka honetan ikus daiteke:
youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6NMw0LQrV-Yv4SBy8KgOq2nAVfVnw1_M )
Ariketa honetan aspaldian jarraitzen dudan ildo berdina berreskuratzen dut: gaur eguneko erreminta eta materialak ahalik eta gutxien erabiltzea. Izatez arkua da baldintza hori betetzen ez duen gauza bakarra. Besteak, bai sokak, bai oinarria eta latroa, fibra naturalez edo kareharriz eta sukarriz eginiko erremintak erabiliz eginda daude.
Materialak:
Latroa………………………. Ereinotza (Laurus nobilis)
Oina........................................ Ereinotza (Laurus nobilis)

Materiales:
Taladro……………………Laurel (Laurus nobilis)
Base.....................................Laurel (Laurus nobilis)
Cojinete…………….……..Bellota
Guía……………………….Clemátide (Clematis vitalba)
Cuerda del arco……………Ortiga (Urtica dioica)
Cuerda para las brasas……. Clemátide (Clematis vitalba)
Herramientas……….……..Silex y piedra caliza
Bideo honekin giden erabilerarekin jarraitzea da nire asmoa. Gida erabiltzeak, aukera oso zabala ematen digu ere kojinete ezberdinak erabiltzeko.
Lehengo bideo baten, patata bat erabili nuen gida legez:
youtube.com/watch?v=WogfPGgszFc
Sasoi hartan harribola txiki bat erabili nuen kojinete modura. Orain plazaratzen dudan bideo honetan, gida sagar bat izango da eta kojinete modura erlojua erabiliko dut.
Ariketa hau nire ikerketa lerrotik desbideratzen da, ez da batere ”paleo”. Baina bushcraft-aren zalentzat, beharbada, erakargarria izan leike.

Fire with a clock and an apple
With this video I want to continue with the use of guides. Its use gives us the option of using a large variation of bearings.
In a previous video I used a potato as a guide:
youtube.com/watch?v=WogfPGgszFc
On that occasion I used a small pebble as a bearing. In the video that I now present, I will use an apple as a guide and a watch as a bearing.
This exercise deviates from the line that I currently follow, it is not "paleo" at all. But as a proposal I think it is valid and perhaps interesting for bushcraft fans too.
...............................................................................................
In the exercise that I now present I follow in the direction marked by the previous works, and conceptually is the same: (1) support surface and (2) cylindrical empty space (guide) youtube.com/watch?v=r8RUlAQj3eI and youtube.com/watch?v=SalznswdCzg
But the idea changes with regard to materials and their application, in this case I will use a potato and a small boulder.
……………………………………………………………………………………….
Sua: patata kojinete legez.
Orain argitaratzen dudan ariketa honetan, lehengo bi lanek bideratzen duten ildo bardinetik jarraitzen dut, barriro gauza bera da kontzeptualki: (1) eusteko azalera eta (2) espazio zilidriko hutsa (gida) youtube.com/watch?v=r8RUlAQj3eI eta youtube.com/watch?v=SalznswdCzg
Baina ideia, bai materialetan eta bai erabiltzeko erari dagokienez, aldatu egiten da. Oraingoan patata bat eta harritxu bat erabiliko ditut.
............................................................................
......................................................................................
In this exercise besides doing it more "paleo", my intention was:
1- To check the control that this bearing allows on the drill using a base that given its small surface requires more control.
2- To test the resistance of the skin of the chestnut by subjecting it to more friction time (30sec in this exercise, 22sec in the previous one)
The system of fire in the end grain without cutting tools with the method of the handrill, I describe it in the video youtu.be/CLyHTWxJWGk
Variations on this system I have compiled in: youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6NMw0LQrV-Yv4SBy8KgOq2nAVfVnw1_M
..........................................................................................
Sua: gaztainak kojinete legez.
Ariketa hau “paleoagoa” egiteaz gain nire helburua hau zen:
1- Kontrol handiagoa eskatzen duen oinarriak, azalera eskasa duelako erabiliz gero, honen moduko kojineteak eskeintzen duen kontrol maila egiaztatzea.
2- Gaztaina azalaren erresistentzia marruskadura denbora luzatzen (30 seg ariketa honetan, 22 seg lehengoan)
Sua testan erremintarik gabeko sistema, esku latroa erabiliz, bideo honetan deskribatzen dut: youtu.be/CLyHTWxJWGk
Sistema honi buruzko aldaketak batu ditut hemen: youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6NMw0LQrV-Yv4SBy8KgOq2nAVfVnw1_M
..............................................................................................
The previous video from a mechanical point of view does not change anything from the previous ones (I mean the series of chopped drills using a guide). But from a structural point of view it allows to move towards other ideas of bearing. The fact of placing the friction surface outside the guide, gives more freedom when choosing it, not being so conditioned by size and shape.
The exercise that I now present in the direction marked by the previous work, conceptually is the same: (1) support surface and (2) cylindrical empty space (guide). But the idea changes in terms of materials and their application, in this case I will use two chestnuts.
..................................................................................................
Sua: gaztainak kojinete legez.
Ikuspuntu mekaniko aldetik, arinagoko bideoak, ez du aldaketa handirik aurkezten lehengoekiko (latro burumotz gidarekin seriea hain zuzen). Baina ikuspuntu estruktural batetik ikusita, egitura dagokionez, beste kojinete ideia baterantz bultzatzen gaitu.
Orain plazaratzen dudan ariketa honetan, lehengo lanak bideratzen duen ildo bardinetik jarraitzen dut, gauza bera da kontzeptualki: (1) eusteko azalera eta (2) espazio zilidriko hutsa (gida). Baina ideia, bai materialean bai bere erabiltzeko erari dagokienez, aldatu egiten da. Oraingoan gaztainak erabiliko ditut.

With this video I want to give continuity to the use of the cane as a resource to start a fire and more specifically to its use as part of the bearing.
As I mentioned in the previous video, on other occasions I have presented various applications of the cane for this purpose. As a drill, as a friction base, as a fastening element for joints, as a drill bit and as a bearing. Now I've put them together in a playlist: ( youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6NMw0LQrV-YslaDVEhpikfulc04KDQw5 )
In the video that I now present, as in the previous one, I use a piece of cane and a boulder. The difference is that it is not inside the cane. Which allows that when choosing the boulder, form and size are not so decisive.

Sua: kainaberaren zati bat kojinete legez.
Bideo honekin kainaberaren erabilerarekin jarraitzea da nire asmoa, sua pizteko baliabide legez eta kojineteak prestatzeko hain zuzen.
Lehengo bideoan azaldu nuenez, beste batzutan ere kainaberaren erabilera ezberdinak aurkeztu ditut helburu berdinarekin. Latroa, oinarria, juntura, punta eta kojinetetzat erabiliz. Orain, erreprodukzio zerrenda baten batu ditut: ( youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6NMw0LQrV-YslaDVEhpikfulc04KDQw5 )
Orain plazaratzen dudan bideo honetan, lehengoan bezala, kainaberaren zati bat eta harribolatxo bat erabiltzen dut. Harribola kainaberaren barruan ez doala da aldea. Beraz, ez tamaina ezta forma ere ez dira garrantzitsuak.

In this video I think I didn’t discover anything new. But it's been recorded for a while and I think it's time for it to be published.
Last spring I recorded this video with the intention of continuing with the drilled holes, I wanted to use the cane in another way, as a bearing. On some occasion I had used it as a drill (youtube.com/watch?v=5uW6QpEKdGs&t=1s) and even as a base (youtube.com/watch?v=hHhaRjxo9hM&t=1s, but never as a bearing. In the video that I now present, in addition to using a piece of cane, I add a small boulder to minimize friction in the bearing.

Sua: kainaberaren zati bat kojinete legez.
Bideo honetan ez dut gauza handirik deskubritzen. Baina aspalditik grabatuta baneukan eta aurkezteko sasoia dela uste dut.
Latro burumotzekin jarraitu nahian, joan den udabarrian grabatu nuen bideo hau. Kainabera beste modu batera erabiltzea zen asmoa, kojinete legez. Inoiz daratulo modura (youtube.com/watch?v=5uW6QpEKdGs&t=1s) edota oinarri modura erabili dut (youtube.com/watch?v=hHhaRjxo9hM&t=1s, baina inoiz ere ez kojinete legez. Orain plazaratzen dudan bideo honetan, kainaberaren zati bat erabiltzeaz gain harribolatxo bat ere erabiltzen dut, marruskadura txikiagoa izateko kojinetean.

Drill……………………. Laurel (Laurus nobilis)
Fireboard ……………… Linden (Tilia platyphyllos)
..…………………………………………………………………………………………………
Beste aldaketa bat ildo bardinetik, latro burumotza kojinetearen lana egiten eta kainaberaren zati bat gida legez (Arundo donax).
Daratuloa …………..ereinotza (Laurus nobilis).
Oinarria ……………ezkia (Tilia platyphyllos)
…………………………………………………………………………………………………
Taladro…………. laurel (Laurus nobilis)
Base…………….. tilo (Tilia platyphyllos)
The leaves are made of common cane (Arundo donax).
Drill……………………. Laurel (Laurus nobilis)
Fireboard ……………… Linden (Tilia platyphyllos)
..…………………………………………………………………………………………………
Hau da aurreko bideoan aurkeztu nuen ariketaren aldaketa bat, baina “paleoagoa”.
Hostoak kainaberarenak dira (Arundo donax)
Daratuloa …………..ereinotza (Laurus nobilis).
Oinarria ……………ezkia (Tilia platyphyllos)
…………………………………………………………………………………………………
Taladro…………. laurel (Laurus nobilis)
Base…………….. tilo (Tilia platyphyllos)
I continue with the resource variations, so the variation will be based again on the material to be used.
Paper and pencil are two things that I have always loaded in my backpack, they are very useful not only to draw a picture or leave a note. They are also very suitable as tinder. And in this case I will use the paper to make the guide.
..…………………………………………………………………………………………………
Hau da kojineteen gidetan oinarriturik egiten dudan beste bideo bat, bostgarrena. Ez da bat ere ez “paleo” baina “bushcraft” zaleentzat interesgarria izen leike.
Baliabideen aldaketekin jarraitzen dut, beraz, material aldaketa izango da berriz.
Papera eta arkatza beti motxilan eduki ditudan gauzak dira. Irudiren bat edo notaren bat uzteko erabiltzeaz gain, ardagai legez ere erabilgarriak direlako.
Oraingo honetan papela kojinetearen gida egiteko erabiliko dut.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………
Hau da kojineteen gidetan oinarriturik egiten dudan bostgarren bideoa. Baliabideen aldaketekin jarraituz, materiala izango da berriro aldatuko dudana. Oraingo honetan, hostoak erabiliko ditut gida egiteko eta hauek eusteko atxaparraren zurtoinak (Lonicera periclymenum).
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
The variation is still only resources related. Instead of using fine sticks, what I used were grass with a rope made from nettle fibers (Urtica dioica).
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Kojinetearen gida garrantzizko elementutzat harturik eta beste aldaketa txiki bat eginez, laugarren bideoa aurkezten dut.
Egiten dudan aldaketa, baliabideen aldaketa baino ez da. Zuhaitz azala erabili beharrean, zotz batzuk asunez (Urtica dioica) eginiko soka batekin loturik erabiltzen ditut.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
The variation is still only resources related. Instead of using tree bark, what I used were fine sticks tied with a rope made from nettle fibers (Urtica dioica).
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Kojinetearen gida garrantzizko elementutzat harturik eta orain dela hilabete batzuk grabatu nuen bideoan aldaketa bat eginez, hirugarren bideoa aurkezten dut.
Egiten dudan aldaketa, baliabideen aldaketa baino ez da. Zuhaitz azala erabili beharrean, zotz batzuk asunez (Urtica dioica) eginiko soka batekin loturik erabiltzen ditut.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
Variation is not conceptual, it’s just a resource related variation. Instead of using leather, it was tree bark that I used.
Even so, the use of a guide and the possibilities that its use offers us is the most important thing.
....................................................................................................
Plazaratu dudan azken bideoarekin jarraituz eta gidaren erabilerarekin hain zuzen, oraingo bideo honetan orain dela hilabete batzuk egin nuen bigarren ariketa aurkezten dut.
Egin nuen aldaketa ez zan kontzeptu aldaketa bat, baliabideen aldaketa baino. Narrua erabili beharrean, zuhaitz azala erabili nuen.
Hala eta guztiz ere, gidaren erabilera eta gidak zabaltzen dituen aukerak dira garrantzitsuena.
The next step was inevitably not to consider as determinant properties such as concavity or convexity (later we will see how I do not totally disregard them). Thus, the possibilities would be even more. The anterior concave cone (hole, bearing) and convex cone (tip, drill) disappear. Instead they turn into two flat surfaces: two flat-headed drills, one against the other. And that's what I did. In this series of videos I want to show you some of these changes.
To keep two flat surfaces rotating one over the other, it is necessary to use a guide, at least for me. In the first video of this series I will use a piece of leather as a guide.
........................................................................................
Plazaratu ditudan azken bideoetan, daratulo burumotzek ematen dizkiguten aukerak aztertzen eta zabaltzen saiatu naiz. Izatez, rolak aldatu baino ez dut egin: daratuloa, ganbila izan beharrean, ahurra bihurtu eta kojinetea, alderantziz, ahurra izan beharrean, ganbila. Baina honen moduko aldaketa sinpleak beste sestra batera eraman ninduten. Bapatean kontzeptu aldaketa batek aldaketa teknologikoak sortzen ditu. Eta berarekin baliabiden erabilera ere bai.
Hurrengo urratsa, ganbil eta ahur kontzeptuak ahaztean zetzan (gero ikusiko dugu nola ez ditudan guztiz ahazten). Horrela, aukerak oraindino gehiago izango lirateke. Lehengo kono ahurra (zuloa, kojinetea) eta kono ganbila (punta, daratulua) desagertuko ziren. Euren ordez, azalera lehun bi bilakatuko ziren: burumotz bi, bata bestearen kontra. Eta horixe bera da egin nuena. Serie honetan kontzeptu honengan eginiko aldaketa batzuk erakutsi nahi dizkizuet.
Azalera lehun bi biraka lekuan mantentzeko, gida bat erabiltzea derrigorrezkoa da, niretzat bai behintzat. Serie honen lehenengo bideoan, narru zati bat erabiliko dut gidatzat.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
The drill is laurel (Laurus nobilis) and the fireboard is linden (Tilia platyphyllos).
Friction fire: winkle 3.0/ Sua: magurioa 3.0/ Fuego por fricción: bígaro 3.0
.............................................................................................
Magurioekin egiten dudan hirugarren bertsioa da hau. Aldaketa, barriro, eusteko eran dago. Jarraitzen dut latro burumotza eta magurioaren maskorraren tontorra erabiltzen (alde ganbila). Baina oraingoan magurioa handitxoagoa denez, eusteko atzamarrak baino ez ditut erabiliko.
Daratuloa ereinotza da (Laurus nobilis) eta oinarria ezkia (Tilia platyphyllos).
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
Molusku hau, elikagaien baliabide garrantzitsua zen Paleolito Aroan, sasoi batzutan lapekin batera garrantzitsuenetarikoa esan dezakegu.
Beste bideo baten ere magurio bat erabili nuen kojinete legez. Baina ondo oratzeko eta batez ere atzamarrak ez erretzeko narru zati bat erabiliz.
Oraingoan narruaren ordez, palu mehe batekin konponduko naiz.
Daratuloa ereinotza da (Laurus nobilis) eta oinarria ezkia (Tilia platyphyllos).
……………………………………………………......................................
Continuing with the topic I am talking about lately, the “flat topped” drills and the resources the sea offers us as bearings. In this video I will use bearings I have used previously, but changing the way to hold them.
This molluscum is an important food resource in the Paleolithic, in some years the most important one along with the limpet.
In the other video I used a winkle as a bearing, but using a piece of leather to hold it still and most importantly to not burn my fingers.
In this case instead of leather I will use a thin stick to help.
The drill is laurel (Laurus nobilis) and the fireboard is linden (Tilia platyphyllos).
..........................................................................................
Although the exploitation of the mussel (Mytilus) in both the Magdalenian and the Azilian as a food resource is anecdotal (e.g. Sta. Catalina 0,25%) , and this is not increased until the Mesolithic, in the exercise that I present, the mussel has another function: functioning as a bearing.
The mussel I use in the recording has a length of 6.5cm, the drill is made of laurel (Laurus nobilis) and the fireboard linden (Tilia platyphyllos).
....................................................
Oraingo bideoan daratulo burumotzekin eta sua pizteko itxasoak eskeitzen dizkigun baliabideak aztertzen jarraitzen dut.
Madeleine Aldian eta Azil Aldian muskuiluen (Mytilus) kontsumoa salbuespen bat izan arren (Sta. Catalina adibidez %0,25) , eta Mesolitora arte elikagaien baliabide moduan erabilera ez dela igoten, aurkezten dudan ariketan beste erabilera ematen diot mojojoiari: kojinetearena.
Grabaketan erabiltzen dudan mojojoiaren luzera 6,5cm-koa da, latroa ereinotza da (Laurus nobilis) eta oinarria ezkia (Tilia platyphyllos).
……………………………………………………
Continuing along the same line (flatdrills and convex bearings), in this video I will use insignis pine, Monterey pine (P. radiata) wood at both the base and the drill. As a bearing I will use an insignis pine (P. radiata) pinecone too.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………
Pleistozenoko paisaian, zalantzarik gabe, protagonista nagusiak koniferak izan ziren. Marruskaduraren bitartez eginiko suari buruzko teknikak edo materialak aipatzen ditugunean, eurentzako, koniferentzako, ez da leku handirik egoten. Inon ere, egokiak ez direla irakurri dut. Ezta hurrik eman ere!
Ildo berdinatik jarraituz (latro burumotz eta kojinete ganbilak), oraingo bideo honetan erabiltzen dudan egurra, bai latroa bai oinarria pinu insignis da eta kojinetea ere pinu insignisen pinubola.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
………………………………………………………………………………………..
Ildo berdinatik jarraituz (latro burumotz eta kojinete ganbilak), oraingo bideo honetan erabiliko dudan kojinetea magurio bat izango da (Littorina littorea).
………………………………………………………………………………………..
Ildo berdinatik jarraituz (latro burumotz eta kojinete ganbilak), oraingo bideo honetan erabiliko dudan kojinetea lapa bat izango da (Patella vulgata). Duela bost urte inguru plazaratu nuen bideo bat sua pizten itxasoak ekarten dituen hondakinak erabiliz eta lapa bat erabili nuen kojinete gisa. youtu.be/_MiPDUCwLWQ Baina orduan barruko aldetik erabili nuen lapa, alde ahurretik. Gaur aldiz, aurkezten dudan bideoan, alde ganbila erabiliko dut, kanpoko aldea.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………
………………………………………………………………………………………..
Aurreko bideoarekin jarraituz youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=p_ylJZlqWos (Sua: adar zorroztua kojinete legez), oraingoan berriro burumotza izango da latroa, burumotz ahurra hain zuzen, baina kojinete gisa hurra bat erabiliko dut.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………
Sometimes a simple formal change without altering the system from a mechanical-functional or structural point of view, can open new ways of investigation. Specifically in this case, on the use of resources.
In this exercise I document, rather than a change, it is an exchange in the form of two elements that interact in the set known as the "bowdrill" system. These are: one active, the drill and another passive, the bearing.
The alteration is very simple, exchange on the contact surface between them. I make the drill that is usually sharp (convex) at that end flat and with a small hole (concave). And the bearing, which usually has a small concavity where one end of the drill is housed, I do it sharp (convex).
…………………………………………………………………………………………….
ADAR ZORROZTUA KOJINETE LEGEZ
Egiturazko ikuspuntu edo ikuspuntu mekaniko-funtzional batetik aldaketarik ez egin arren, batzuetan aldaketa txiki batek ikerketa-bide berriak ireki ditzake. Kasu honetan, baliabideen erabileraren gainean, hain zuzen.
Aldaketa bat egin beharrean, elkar eragiten duten elementuen forma trukatzean datza dokumentatzen dudan ariketa. Daratulua eta kojinetea.
Elkartrukea oso sinplea da, haien arteko kontaktu azala trukatzen dut. Normalean zorrotza (ganbila) izaten den daratuluaren muturra, oraingoan buru motz, apala egiten dut eta zulo txiki batekin (ahurra). Kojinetea, aldiz, zulotxoa eduki beharrean, zorroztu egiten dut (ganbila).
…………………………………………………………………………………………….

(youtube.com/watch?v=yt8ckVLrSt8) , I describe how to use the arm-bow system using only one arm. I held the bearing with my mouth, Inuit style. But in that description I forgot to show how to wind the rope in the drill using only one hand. In fact, in that video I use both hands. To explain this (3:30) and also to show the application of a tourniquet to prepare materials and, of course, to make fire, I recorded another video. So far I have had it forgotten in my archive. Since then it has been almost 4 years, but I finally publish it. This is the video.
Materials
Drill: Hazel (Corylus avellana)
Fireboard: Chestnut (Castanea sativa)

“Fire with the arm-bow and mouth/ Sua beso-arkua eta ahoa erabiliz/Fuego con el brazo-arco y la boca” bideoan
(youtube.com/watch?v=yt8ckVLrSt8) “beso-arkua” sistema zelan erabili deskribatzen dut, beso bat baino ez erabiltzen. Inuiten erara, kojinetea ahoan erabiltzen nuen. Baina deskribapen haretan, esku bategaz bakarrik zelan biribilkatzen den soka latroan ahaztu egin zaidan azaltzea. Izatez, bideoan esku birekin egiten nuen lan hori. Hori azaltzeko (3:30), bide batez torniketearen erabilera materialak prestatzeko eta baita sua egiteko, grabatu nuen beste bideo bat. Orain arte ahaztuta eduki dut nire artxiboan. Ordutik ona ia 4 urte joan dira jada, baina azkenean argitaratzea erabaki dut. Hona hemen bideoa.
Materialak
