Discovering MSUs History | Archaeological Field School Michigan State University 2024-10-09 | The MSU Campus Archaeology Program, or CAP, is among one of the first programs in the United States to offer an opportunity for students to excavate their own campus. Every other year, CAP runs a five-week-long summer field school, archaeological experience for students to investigate the stories and material culture of historic families who owned property that would later become MSU. In 2024, students enrolled in the summer field school worked to uncover more of the foundation of MSU’s first observatory, first discovered in summer 2023, as well as artifacts associated with the building. CAP has also partnered with the Abrams Planetarium on MSU’s campus to learn more about the history and evolution of scientific observation

Are Race Car Drivers Athletes? Michigan State University 2024-07-08 | When you think of sports that can be physically challenging, football, basketball and hockey are top of mind. But what about race car driving? Is it physically and mentally challenging? According to Jordan Taylor and Ricky Taylor, sons of sports car champion Wayne Taylor and members of WTRAndretti sports car team, the answer is a resounding yes. In 2017, the Taylors teamed up with David Ferguson, an associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology at Michigan State University and an expert in improving the health and human performance of race car drivers. They worked with Ferguson ever since to improve their performance on the track, including prepping for the Six Hours of the Glen endurance race that they will be competing in on June 20 to 23.

After cross-checking old maps, campus archaeology determined that it was the foundation of the first observatory on MSU’s campus, constructed in 1880. Citing Slavery Project Michigan State University 2023-06-14 | When Michigan State University’s Justin Simard was conducting research for his dissertation, he came across a case predating the Civil War related to slavery that was cited as precedent in 2012. He started looking for other slavery citations from the past 30 years, thinking he’d find one or two. Instead, he found more than 300. Simard was stunned to find that American judges were still citing property cases of enslaved Black people as good law 160 years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Simard started the Citing Slavery Project to document the history and continued legacy of the law of slavery in the United States.
