going over a few games in my library and pointing out a few areas to look for, so games can see the trackers correctly and give the best results.
Blade and Sorcery has just cost me £25 again, to find that despite it being well into 1.0.x game release, the FBT still doesn't seem to work for people, not just the extreme few with the Pico trackers like myself.
If anyone has any ideas how to correctly configure Blade and Sorcery 1.0 for FBT, please leave me a comment.
tested games are VR Chat, Dance Dash, Final Soccer VR and Blade and Sorcery 1.0.3

I know right? A review actually ahead of release!
Fear not, as I have had a few months daily driving and testing this headset, so plenty of experience with the device and its features.
This review has been alot of fun, but an extremely lengthy process to make as the testing never stops and everything was done in virtual and mixed reality, something very new to me.
This is not final hardware and due to nature of it still being pre release, software is likely to change, any notes or opinions on state of features at time of review should be taken as that, before release and not final, where the software is rapidly changing.
I am under no obligation to do a review and I have not been sent this headset for the purpose of review, as such, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
no sponsors, no affiliated links, just honest user feedback.
I hope you enjoy!

12:07 is this the end of neo 3 link now?
so, quick overview of the new addition to my cable collections, the 'powered link' cable by INIU.
pico 4 is a bit different to quests in that it can charge above 25w- this isn't with any screens on increasing the power draw, this is just how fast it can charge, but that is a feature for a reason, 18w in sustained used for pico 4 will still slowly drop the battery depending on load, refresh rate and brightness settings used
unfortunately, these types of cables either don't state the max power, or actively say 18w, as that's the minimum for something you'd want on something like a quest 3.
how reliable will this be? absolutely no idea but I'm sure i'll find out with my awful luck.
the 18w charge limit and weight and stiffness of the cable itself hasn't exactly filled me with hope- but we shall see!
this isn't a sponsored freebie from amazon, I purchase everything I own, I do not do affiliate links even for stuff I do actually like.

quest 2, quest 3,
deferred rendering in VR- check
only temporal /fxaa from UE to remove the awful aliasing with extreme blur- check
absolute tank in performance at anything over a 2k per eye render resolution- check
basically a requirement to use dlss to lower visuals even more and cause ghosting because it just runs so poor- check.
shader compilation stutter- check.
forget this game has VR, even if you aren't in vr mode, you'll get a spike in frametimes doing stages for the first time, this is with all the headroom in the world on cpu and gpu, it has shader compilation stutter regardless of what settings you use.
Codemasters can do better this, unreal engine has its fair share of blame here, but the VR implementation is on codemasters, don't continue to try polish a turd with deferred rendering, it's just never going to perform or look good in VR- DLSS in VR is horrible and shouldn't be basically forced for people to play the game in VR.
unreal engine doesn't HAVE to look like crap in VR.
docs.unrealengine.com/4.26/en-US/TestingAndOptimization/PerformanceAndProfiling/ForwardRenderer
this isn't a cherry picked run, random car and stage just how I like it, few runs with immediate crashes before this to get feel of brakes and steering then onto full run.
no SGSR used in VD, due to fast motion of game, default 75% sharpening.
vd high preset, res 2592x2496 (hidden area mesh not rendering some of this resolution)
dp res 2380x2496 (no hidden area mesh)
dirt rally 2.0 is a pig to run in VR, with a 3080ti my games settings are around medium with only 2xAA, 4xAF to keep 90fps across the various stages
the game does seem to like lower desktop resolutions, which VD automatically changes your monitor resolution to 1080p, once doing this for DP mode also, there really isn't much difference in frametimes after you factor in GPU render savings with HAM (hidden area mesh) that VD uses.
obviously any encoding overhead will eat into available streaming or recording performance, so both recordings done with CPU h264 recording setting in obs to get an idea of what HAM offers for the frametimes.
DO NOT TRY COMPARE FOOTAGE FOR QUALITY OR COMPRESSION- this is not exactly the best encode setting from OBS and youtube will add its own compression- both recordings are 1080p and this video is uploaded as 4k.
both look ok enough despite lower graphics settings and resolution, but while VD does offer the best streaming pcvr image out of the several options, it can't really handle dirt rally 2.0 that well, due to vegetation and fast changing of the scene when moving- this is a title that will hit encoder hard, so any ultra/godlike settings will come at a serious cost to performance- not in frametimes but encoder itself, something my 3080ti suffers with.
for image, latency and reliability, the DP is the winner, but then VD does offer HAM and has those awesome features like passthrough masking
This NEEDS to be done every Pico connect update, reinstall Pico connect before making any changes as it will not start using old configured files.
For those looking for the app.asar file, this is now drag and drop with no 'stage 2' required from last video- This link is ONLY for 10.0.25beta I am using in this video, follow the video to do this yourself if pico connect updates higher that 10.0.25
drive.google.com/file/d/18ua90duAF0z9182YmflZ_MlpXrs8Ixid/view?usp=sharing
sharing ready made files is unfortunately not sustainable, as this changes every update and needs to be redone.
This is why I am sharing a guide how to do this yourself, it only needs to be done once until the pico connect gets updated and is easy to do!
notepad++ required notepad-plus-plus.org/downloads
Text guide here- drive.google.com/file/d/1rRjojHnkx9AOFs5ysdsW1l_7PPVSLHNb/view?usp=sharing
this video is simply made to complement the text guide,
showing how to increase the ultra resolution of pico connect to something more like virtual desktop Godlike
also increasing the bitrate limit, but this really can't match virtual desktop h264+ mode, so higher than 250 just becomes unstable.
now you know how to do the changes, you can compare virtual desktop vs pico connect, airlink vs pico connect and alvr vs pico connect.
pico connect is in beta and maybe one day pico will offer the increases themselves so it doesn't need to be hacked in like this,
Hope this helps!
This video covers more information on the super resolution feature and covers how you can edit and increase the resolution to steam VR and pico 4 and neo 3 link headsets, which is the comparison people are making between pico connect vs virtual desktop
There is also a way to increase the maximum bitrates allowed, this is still an automatic bitrate, but you can raise the upper limit.
The video explains all and shows you can do this yourself if you don't trust external files, if you know how to use Electron you can repackage the app.asar file yourself to make both the GUI and steam VR apply and reflect changes, keeping the functionality of the slider.
with my solution, this is using notepad++
If you just want to use Stage 2, here is my file I have edited like the video shows, with a 3072 resolution and 400 max bitrate set- you will only need to do stage 2 yourself to set bitrate.
ONLY ultra preset has been changed.
link to app.asar from this video FOR 10.0.24beta ONLY here- this WILL NOT work on any other version:
drive.google.com/file/d/1VnPOCOM3aVaEFM1eXYOVKy-qppMJCOem/view?usp=sharing
post video upload- app.asar FOR 10.0.25beta ONLY- no stage 2 required- 250mb bitrate limit (Please see new guide video) drive.google.com/file/d/18ua90duAF0z9182YmflZ_MlpXrs8Ixid/view?usp=sharing
Text format:
STAGE 1.
go to the install directory of your pico connect, find the resources folder.
right click the app.asar file inside and give your windows user full permissions.
open the file in notepad++
click anywhere on line 8 of the file and press ctrl and F(find) and enable the two directional search check box.
search for "ultra" and click find next, which should bring you to area on line that you can edit the resolution for ultra.
navigate with keyboard across so you can see the values for resolution, change to a resolution of your choice- if planning to use h264, stick with 3072 value.
next, to adjust the maximum values allowed for bitrate, ctrl and F on keyboard to search for bitrate.
go through every result here, using the UP arrow on search (not find next) and make sure every result that has a value pertaining to 150, is changed to a new higher value.
then save the file and exit.
STAGE 2.
go to the app data / roaming location of your windows user and go into the pico connect folder.
edit and save the settings.json to reflect a new higher bitrate target value you want set, this is not the same as what was done in stage 1.
for example, 350 would be fine, if you wanted 400, set more than 400 in stage 1.
MAKE SURE you are not trying to use high bitrates with HEVC, it is unstable
from testing, both 150 HEVC and 250 AVC h246, are stable, anything more introduces issues depending on scene being looked at in headset.
as pico connect is an admin application, any changes made within the pico connect streamer GUI that require a 'save' will write the default 150 bitrate back to settings.json.
if you find steam vr is still stuck on 150bitrate, exit steam vr, while leaving pico connect running, go back to your setings.json and edit and save the bitrate value for ultra, then start steam vr through pico connect in headset.
that's it!

this requires Pico 4 on 5.9.x firmware and Pico connect PC streaming software, along with the obvious motion trackers and relevant motion tracker APK.
the Pico motion trackers have been in beta for a long time, these are the first developer units, it has been noticed Pico are starting a new beta for improved trackers, so I can't promise how long compatibility will last with these versions.
these were supplied by Pico for beta testing the now cancelled Blitz Rhythm game for Pico 4.
You need to edit the settings file as shown in C:\Users\*your user name* \AppData\Roaming\PICO Connect
recalibrate from standalone as shown in the video, and you are good to go!
the trackers will populate more than 2, because it is adding estimation points for feet and hip, full body tracking ... sort of.
steamVR leg tracking, leg tracking for vrchat, leg tracking for blade and sorcery, leg tracking for pcvr, leg tracking in VR.
pico connect replaces streaming assistant, there are a few settings explained and compression and latency covered, the visuals are lacking but there seems to be some performance available to push this further.
very efficient access to the desktop from within standalone, but pico connect has no keyboard, cant pair a bluetooth keyboard or mouse to use with pico connect..... .c'mon pico!!
while I won't share the apk for pico connect, I imagine its already available online if you search for it, or you can pull it from your pico 4 if you have one.

so so cool!
on Pico headsets, some games and apps are not deleting the old game updates that get downloaded, so can accumilate and build up taking away your storage space.
this is a very easy fix but is one I would hope can be addressed from the game developers or Pico to stop happening in the first place.
for the android system settings APK, here is one Lero has created that can be sideloaded into your headset, simply drag this onto the storage of your headset and then use pico file manager to view apks, then click to install.
drive.google.com/file/d/1fCp78D-9vmzwHcbdiH0i7wQyJSYwld_o/view?usp=sharing
to delete older game updates, look for the older OBB files as shown in video, be sure only to delete older version OBB files and keep the most recent one, do not delete anything that is not an OBB file in the file name.

11:13 more warnings, cheers!
testing the claims of increased visuals for steam link pcvr on quest 3, quest 2 and quest pro, increasing resolution of the encode size can be done through a config file but this puts alot more strain on the gpu encoder, at 120hz with my rtx 3080ti this is too much to maintain a smooth experience.
also explaining the missing ethernet functionality on quest 3 when wanting to use with steam link pcvr streaming.
virtual desktop can use ethernet, so i am unsure why icon is grey and can not be started from quest library
a very technically impressive streaming solution, with minimal friction to setup and use- as covered in the video, this isn't for pushing maximum visuals, but rather having a much better pcvr experience with regards to the response and feel of your actions.

Pico Neo 3 link, may also apply to Pico neo 3 pro.
not applicable to pico 4, quest 2, quest pro or quest 3.
so far, so good, I've covered what I didn't like about the OS in a rant video and from the changes I'm seeing, its almost like they watched the video.
not everything fixed, but it's much much better for me now.
so, cheers Meta! now please get support to action a replacement headset again😄
pico 4 has hdmi output which can make this all happen with no performance loss and minimal latency compared to if you were casting over wifi.
also with a setup like this, no PC is needed at all really.
so here's what's needed:
1: a good usb C extension cable, 2mtr seems reliable- optional of course but means only one cable to your head.
combined with a usbc 'dock' that has usb C pd power (to keep charged) hdmi out and a usb A data port (£10-20 on amazon)
2: either a hdmi cable or a hdmi male to hdmi male adapter
3: a cheap usb hdmi capture card, these can be picked up for a little under £10 on ebay
4: if adding a camera feed, then obviously a camera+ output cable, or a usb camera like a webcam
4a: usb hub to have more than one usb input if dock only has one.
5: USB DUAL Camera application- can be installed through Aurora store or sideloaded yourself (see my video on sideloading with pico 4)
6: youtube account to live stream too if you wish, or you can simply record from the USB DUAL Camera app like I'm doing in this video, to later upload to youtube.
how is it this horrible? why is this seen as acceptable?
meta quest 2 and meta quest 3 both share this fate, these are not new issues.
The quest 3 is just far too many trade offs for me to consider this at all for a pcvr headset, I can't even begin to use higher virtual desktop settings like 120hz with hevc 10 bit godlike on any bitrate or game, can't use the bumped up 200mb bitrate for 90hz hevc 10 bit godlike and obviously can't use the AV1 codec on my 3080ti.
so over a pico 4, there really isn't much benefits offered given I'm held back by both a network setup that is absolutely rock solid for other headsets and a gpu that was incredibly expensive not too long ago.
to make the most out of the quest 3, a ''cheap'' headset, its now requiring the best part of £1500 for a 4090 and new WIFI 6 setup.
all to be able to push those visuals just to rival a much lower resolution headset on display port with every increase in vd settings increasing latency that you just don't get on display port and at the end of a huge expense, still don't completely eliminate compression.
not exactly cheap anymore and the worst part is this quest 3 just isn't worth that expense at all in my opinion.
fov may seem big on paper, it may have great lenses and great edge to edge clarity but all get quite literally, overshadowed by the low overlap and the lenses tailing off brightness to the outer edges.
to look around with my eyes, this is not a good headset for me, I want to look to the edges and I can't really do that clearly due to the binocular overlap.
this combination of low overlap ( eye strain and loss of depth perception ) plus the streaming compression on PC causing its own loss of depth especially in distance, just makes this uncomfortable visually for me.
that's not even getting into actual headset comfort, its a heavy headset and can only be balanced by making it even heavier at the rear, this for me is just too much to go back to having tried Pico standalone headsets.
but worst of all, is the now even greater sacrifice made to tracking volume above your head- this may very well be an uncommon situation, but in VR, things need to at least try and be natural- being thrown around the moment you hang on something is incredibly immersion breaking and is one more step backwards for me personally having started with a tracking system that just doesn't break.
final nail in this coffin is I have yet again received a bad headset, this time with 'mura', a dark texture that follows wherever you look, this is on the panel itself and is something that was not present in my first headset, which had tracking problems.
adding to the pain is after just one day, both thumbstick in these controllers have started to fail, becoming loose and rattling despite barely being touched at all- I have never broke vr controllers and certainly didn't do anything to cause this myself.
so yet again, I'm going to have to arrange a return and wait for a replacement headset- I purchased release day and have so far had less than a total of 24hrs use over 2 weeks with 2 headsets.
for me, this headset is not one I plan to use a lot, merely wanting out of interest for what developers do with it, not the hardware of the headset itself.
so that's it, my review and quite possibly last video on quest 3 until something cool happens or I find something worth sharing.
only a maximum (peak) of 18w is supported with headset off completely and in sleep.
with the majority of the charge being around 11w-13w
this isn't my powerbrick or cable to blame or even the included charger, leaving only the headset itself
max I would expect is around 25w given the chip does support this, obviously not all the time but I have never seen that charging rate through any battery % or have actually observed even a sustained 18w charge.
the headset drains FAST and then takes ages to charge!
for Google:
meta quest 3 charging slowly.
meta quest 3 charge problem.
meta quest 3 battery problem
meta quest 3 battery life
meta quest 3 bobovr battery
meta quest 3 powerbank
meta quest 3 charge in use.
meta quest 3 infinite battery.
meta quest 3 charger
meta quest 3 pd charge
for me the quest os has so many dumb UI choices and solid brick wall against any natural android features people may want to use,.
with awful trade offs in places for absolutely no reason, its just incredibly frustrating for someone like me, the headset could do so much more but meta can't seem to make up their mind what they want to do with the OS.
games should now all be changing their render resolution to the new baseline of quest 3, but without further optimisation from game developers, this can mean the once stable framerate on quest 2, is now unstable on quest 3.
this is not all games and not any specific games to blame, it is just the nature of new hardware coming out with an existing library of games, Pico had the same sort of problem, it will take time for game developers to revisit and make changes to better suit the new hardware.
120hz mode being enabled does not make games 120hz, it will still require game developers to enable and tune for 120hz mode.
beatsaber has not been updated to make use of 120hz yet, despite some claiming it is.
I am using OVR metrics which is supplied by oculus / facebook / meta for the oculus quest, oculus quest 2, oculus quest 3, meta quest 2, meta quest 3 and meta quest pro.
you can install this via sidequest.
focus on latency, MTP and bitrate- explained throughout.
No microphone on quest link meta oculus quest 3, bugged, like many other things on this headset right now.
this is not a fault of that 3d print design as its clearly happening again on the soft strap the quest 3 comes with and I've now deleted that video.
I am experiencing tracking lost error on quest 3, when my hands are near the headset to adjust position or volume, i get tracking lost message.
this is not my playspace or conditions as that has not changed throughout my years with VR on other devices, yet it will lose tracking and then say playspace is too dark and not return.
I can only assume this is a fault of the headset or one of its cameras and no amount of factory resets is fixing it, there is no PTC available so i cannot even confirm bad update (its v57, the latest quest 3 comes with out the box)
so I printed some adapters that allow using of old quest 2 headstraps, no problem with fitment and seemingly was going well.
until I want to position the headset better on my face, every time with this headstrap and the adapter, I will lose tracking when touching the headset.
not the cameras, not the front, just the faceplate either side.
this is beyond stupid and I really don't know why this is happening, but as I've found the cause I thought I would share it to the world, it took me longer than I care to admit to realise what it was. multiple factory resets happened
can I get the perfect blend of real and virtual, while also doing it live?
err, sort of, once I can spend some more time matching up the various window feeds into OBS.
This video goes into detail of the challenges and compromises I found wanting to add that last part to my mixed reality setup- new method, new problems to find solutions for.
This setup could be possible on meta quest 2, meta quest pro, meta quest 3, pico neo 3 link, pico 4 and the htc vive xr elite and any other standalone headset that has virtual desktop and passthough cameras, but given I only know of the pico 4 having a HDMI out from its usb c port, it is the one that will be the 'easiest' to setup for this particular solution.
check out the Virtual desktop beta and also check out the new Reality Mixer on Steam, there is so much you can do with this combo and I'm sure someone smarter than me can do something much cooler.

assetto corsa in mixed reality is very cool!
can be used with meta quest 2, meta quest 3, pico neo 3 link, pico 4, htc vive xr elite using virtual desktop 1.29 beta update.

the mixed reality is all done on headset, so quest 2, pico neo 3 link, pico 4, quest pro, quest 3 and HTC vive XR elite will all work, with colour passthrough being the more obvious use case here.
for those who want to try my very quick and dirty solution, i have uploaded the car i modified in assetto corsa here : drive.google.com/file/d/1RozGvb5N9AkAcTpk7SkiMglDkjiX2Ax2/view?usp=sharing
this idea is now out there, go mad! this isn't just for sim racing, it can be anything at all running with virtual desktop, all oculus games, steam vr and even the virtual desktop environments for working or movies, all can use this feature, not just assetto corsa, beat saber and vrchat- ALL PCVR games.
to get the virtual desktop beta, head over to their discord where you will find it in the announcements page discord.gg/qVHCYPFyFU
Big thanks to Akumelion for assisting with some quick tips for blender and thanks again to Akumelion and 3NIGMA for allowing footage to be used at the end.
This feature combined with a quest 3 could get very interesting!!!!
cheers guys.
if you are wanting to correct the controller positions of your pico 4 or Pico Neo 3 Link in steam vr games using streaming assistant or Pico link software- notably the Display port mode where this is really needed for some titles, then you can now do so easily while in steam vr by a config tool running in a steam vr overlay
grab the file from my google drive here drive.google.com/file/d/1eE4V3251wJT97ubv1rYMkS7Jgk39ojUF/view?usp=sharing
or direct from the pico china community forum
bbs.picoxr.com/post/7143850417754439688
the rar file when extracted will have a picture showing where to place files and a video of how the adjustments work, there should only be one pico panel folder in the win64 folder, not a double directory of two pico panel folders.
if you are not an admin user on windows, you will need to click allow on your desktop pop up when steam vr starts.
enjoy!

this is using windows 11 built in android app support, using windows sub system for android and WSAtools.
transfer your recorded videos or screenshots taken in pico headset to PC.
this is not bluetooth transfer, it uses wifi so large video recording files take mere seconds to transfer.
this method is using the pico vr mobile application but will work for any android application that does not require google play services.

shown here on my Pico neo 3 link using 120hz, max 150mb bitrate, ultra resolution, HEVC 10bit.
without recording it is at 35ms total latency reported from VD, the same as I was getting at normal HEVC 120hz.
amazing work and absolutely worth checking out virtual desktop for your oculus quest 2 / meta quest 2, Pico neo 3 link and Pico 4.
while it can't quite match the display port cable of the neo 3 link, with all the updates that VD brings its exciting to see how it keeps getting closer and closer.
amazing work virtual desktop team, big thanks from me!
using a usb C to HDMI cable from the headset (pico supports video out over type C)
then into a HDMI capture card (ebay special- they are everywhere for under £10, mine has type c usb connection)
then into my android phone, using USB CAMERA Pro application.
then pushing the feed to youtube from within app ( you need stream key and URL from youtube live)
audio from headset is perfectly synced with video and does not have any delay, unlike some wireless casting situations and the USB CAMERA app has an option to use your phones microphone and mix with the captured audio feed, allowing voice.
the idea here is to create a solution that you can stream without having the wire to your PC or adding load to the headset by casting.
this is direct to youtube, you could also use the USB CAMERA pro application to send IP camera feed, take that and input into OBS on PC, but I am just creating a proof of concept here, so far so good.
this is absolutely not sponsored, I don't have any obligations to do a review and I certainly don't get anything for free, I'm a regular customer with way too much free time and like going into nerdy stuff and relaying my findings.
while my playspace conditions are not favourable and I can not rule out faulty headsets, all results and findings are relevant and I hope this info can better inform those who are interested in the device and that this can be taken as some crucial feedback for DPVR's next headset or revised design.

the dpvr e4 gets added into the list of increasing VR headsets, but has strong competition from existing vr headsets such as rift s, quest 1, quest 2, quest 3, quest pro, pico neo 3 link, pico 4, htc vive pro, htc xr elite, valve index, bigscreen beyond, pimax 8kx, pimax crystal, varjo aero and so on.
the price is appealing despite missing the standalone feature set when compared to a quest 2, but it needs to fix those areas it comes up short to be truly recommended by me for PCVR use.

there are several big changes here, one being the bump past the locked 150mb bitrate for h264 with the new h264+ mode, a highly requested feature, a brand new HEVC 10 bit mode, making darker areas and clear skies much nicer solving the colour banding problem streaming has and of course, from my (admittedly) selfish request, 120hz mode for pico neo 3 link.
This update is honestly game changing- it can either be the best looking pcvr streaming for your picos or the best feeling on neo 3 link ( pico 4 does not support 120hz)
if you own virtual desktop on the meta quest or pico stores, you can use the beta apk and beta streamer from link below and see the improvements for yourself:

nice simple mod- credit for the idea goes to @NullAndVoidChannel for noticing the profile of pico 4 is similar.
this channel does not do affiliate links, so find where ever is cheapest for the pico 4 faceplate and have fun!
Lubos has once again beat everyone to the punch, all it took was the below to be used in openXR:
XR_FB_display_refresh_rate extension, you can call APIs of the extension to get/enumerate/request display refresh rate.
now I am absolutely amazed that pretty much all game developers have not added 120hz as a display refresh to games that would quite easily manage and for those ports from oculus that have 120hz on that headset with less performance on tap, what gives????
video covers my thoughts and shows Pico metrics.

quick guide on how to customise your controller models in steam VR with the pico neo 3 link (or pico 4 or even quest 2)
The pico neo 3 link has bright white controller models which hurt the initial impressions of image, causing godrays in the dark steam vr environment, to solve that, here is my 'no godrays' controller models, simply drag and drop where shown in the video.
