(Aside from Youtube mangling the audio on this... make sure you have the highest audio playback quality!). Welcome to my second summer project (the first being "Journey") and my biggest one yet! First off, the initial idea of writing this arrangement was a theoretical "If I were assigned to write the very last battle track of the whole Kingdom Hearts series, what would it sound like?" I have been a KH fan for as long as the games have existed, and with it, an adoring fan of Yoko Shimomura's brilliant work on them. It pleases me to no end that she does top-notch scoring AND likes oboes, so the thought of playing oboe in KH3 is kind of my own personal version of "I wanna be an astronaut when I grow up". This track was also inspired by the striking realization that there is a chance I will be in my 30s by the time I get to play KH3. This does not please me quite as much.So what WOULD it sound like if she made me score it? This year's theme is "Connection" and will be benefiting cherishintl.org Hollow Knight is a game that I've had friends pressing me to stop what I'm doing and play for years, and I finally did so a few months ago. It's a unique experience with its own intricately detailed world that, if you don't end up smashing your Switch against a wall before it's done, gives you a tremendous sense of accomplishment to work your way through. I had heard City of Tears in its OST version with its live vocals many times before, but discovered that the in-game version was oboe! Gris - Part 1 & 2 [Oboe / English horn cover] Field of Reeds 2019-04-02 | After waffling back and forth for awhile, I bought Gris for the flight to GDC last month. The dreamy watercolor art direction drew me in, as did citing Journey and Ori as its main two influences. It's a steadily-paced passage through the five stages of grief after the title character experiences tragedy, and it really began to win me over in the final stages - beautiful to look at, beautiful to listen to, let me get lost in my thoughts as I played.The ending of the game, in particular Gris' singing, is what affected me to the point of covering this theme. Okami - Tribe of the Heavenly Gods [Cover || Multiplayer 4: RESCUE] Field of Reeds 2018-10-01 | I could cover the entirety of Okami's soundtrack and never get bored, but this was one of the tracks I've wanted to play with most of all. The theme of the Celestials is an ethereal, wistful piece that you only hear in one area of the game as you head towards its final battle. I mixed in a few other nods to related music from that chapter, including "Reset"'s motifs, and my favorite cue in all of game music, "White Light Majesty". (Plus, I got to use the shinobue I bought in Tokyo a few years ago, haha)This is my annual contribution to Multiplayer Charity! This year's remix album is titled RESCUE, featuring the animals of video games (Okami, Star Fox, and more), and all proceeds go to benefit the Wolf Conservation Center in New York. Moss - Home to Me [English horn / Flutes Cover] Field of Reeds 2018-09-08 | Hi everyone, how's it going? It's been so long that it took me several minutes to figure out where the upload button was, haha. :DToday's cover is the credits song from PSVR game "Moss", which released back in March. It was tremendously fun to work on Jason's music and I adored this melody that is the heart of the entire score. As it turned out, he recently held a remix contest for this, and generously offered the stems to work with. While I'm not entering, I did nab some of those stems because programming drums myself is one of my least favorite things in the world, haha. Mecano - Hijo de la Luna [English horn / Oboe / Whistle cover] Field of Reeds 2017-09-22 | Hello wonderful people :) I know, it's been literally a year since I last uploaded... sure doesn't feel like it. There's a chance you've heard me in the interim though, because while I haven't been able to work on covers, I've had the joy and privilege of recording for a handful of fantastic video game soundtracks, as well as fan projects! Everybodys Gone to the Rapture - The Mourning Tree [Woodwind cover] Field of Reeds 2016-07-10 | I tend to say this often about music I love, but Jessica Curry's choir-centric score to "Everybody's Gone to the Rapture" is truly, devastatingly beautiful. It didn't go unnoticed, either, winning a BAFTA and a slew of other awards in the year it's been out. If you haven't heard it, I implore you to pick this one up.I've had this cover's WIP on my drive for about 7 months, since it falls under the category of "if I try to touch this soundtrack I'll ruin everything" and that's intimidating. But, like the other covers on my channel, I decided to finish it anyway. :) This melody appears in various pieces of the OST. Ori and the Blind Forest - The Spirit Tree [Cover ft. Patti Rudisill] Field of Reeds 2016-03-11 | I remember when Ori was released last year. I was out of town on a week-long gig, and I'm not sure WHY I knew I needed to play this game - I just knew I needed it. I drove from Starbucks to malls to McDonalds to find a strong enough wifi signal so that I could download it, but didn't succeed until the last night when I settled into a hotel. It was worth it - Ori is the most achingly beautiful platformer I've ever played, and for that first week it was all I could think about! This is in no small part thanks to the score, which even (unusually for soundtracks) features the oboe and English horn as solo instruments.Anyway, today is the release of the Definitive Edition. A remixing group called Materia decided a few days ago that an Ori album was needed, so I jumped in with an arrangement of what's possibly my favorite track from the original. :D It doesn't stray too far, but does open with an "Up the Spirit Cavern Walls" nod.Many thanks once again to Patti Rudisill for taking on the violin solos! However, over a year ago, I stumbled across a striking Youtube video of a series of KH sketches illustrating the "red string of fate". This song was in the background and I fell in love. Since the description was in Japanese, I had no idea what it was, and only last month was a friend able to identify it for me. Wolfs Rain - Toboes Theme (Flute / Oboe cover) Field of Reeds 2014-04-09 | It's been awhile since I watched Wolf's Rain, but I still have lots of feelings for it and keep wanting to do this melody justice. This surely won't be the last attempt, but for now, here's a combination of the first and last times you hear it in the series. Not only did Toboe get the sole character theme, but he got (I believe) the only one that transforms over the course of the show. Live instruments are flute, oboe, English horn. Forgive my mediocre flute playing, but I think it still somehow suits the tone of the OST. :)
Kirbys Adventure - Starry Sky (Cover) Field of Reeds 2014-03-06 | I made this arrangement once upon a time, and decided it could use a tune-up and some live instruments! Kirby's Adventure (NES) was one of the first games I just really loved for the music. Fullmetal Alchemist - Bratja (English horn cover) Field of Reeds 2014-03-03 | This song has been one of my absolute favorites for years and years. The original FMA has a lot of meaning to me, and something about Bratja, or "Brothers", is perfect both in and out of context. I've arranged it several times but always wanted to do a straight up cover with English horn, a mournful instrument for a mournful melody. I did attempt to make a "choir" of them for the respective chorus, but really, 4-5 of me on the same horn just sounds like some weird echo filter. Haha. FFX - Auron (Oboe / Winds cover) Field of Reeds 2013-12-29 | Auron is my favorite FF character, and recently having the pleasure of playing "Distant Worlds" inspired me to pull this piece up and finish it. I've honestly had long drives back from gigs where I set his theme on repeat and just trance out to it at 1am.Live instruments on this one are flute, oboe, English horn, recorder, hichiriki and sho. I'm sure you'll notice that it's not only his theme, but mashed up with Hymn of the Fayth, which is a piece that ties together all areas of the game so well. I'm kind of laughing about the middle section because to this day I can't figure out what the notes are for that string section solo... Zelda: Skyward Sword - Skippers Retreat Shack (Low Whistle / Oboe Cover) Field of Reeds 2013-04-28 | Now and then, I get an inquiry as to whether or not I've played Skyward Sword since I covered Fi's theme over a year ago. I did receive the game mere days after uploading that cover, and ever since I've wanted to work with this melody! There was something very striking to me about the music in Lanayru in general, but particularly the shack buried by time.Live instruments used are the same I used for Fi - Low whistle, pennywhistle, oboe and English horn. The middle minute or so is a take on "Lanaryu Sand Sea", which is pretty safe to assume as the longest oboe solo in the franchise.I'm not sure which of the composers wrote this one, Hajime Wakai, Shinbo Fujii, Mahito Yokota, Takeshi Hama, or Koji Kondo, but Zelda music does not belong to me!

Monaco - Whats Yours Is Mine - Cover Field of Reeds 2013-02-07 | I really thought I'd finish a different project first, but time constraints sometimes work their magic, haha. To be fair, the offer to cover/arrange/interpret "Monaco"'s theme was extended back in December, before I was asked to cover "Horn"! Either way, more fun music! I'm not entirely happy with the final result, but I'm out of time to do anything else. T_TI'm not quite sure what I was going for besides "sneaking around -- getting caught -- RUN AWAY!!!11"... old cartoon Mickey Mousing + old movie + Shimomura snare drum? The best part is I could steal anything and call it getting into character or something. In fact, the entire purpose of the oboe / English horn running around (starting at around 1:09) is that they've "stolen" something and are tossing it back and forth as they make a break for it. (Answer: It's the theme from Journey.) (It was funnier in my head...) Also my Dimension Pro Saloon Piano leaves much to be desired. Horn - Yours to Name (Cover) Field of Reeds 2013-01-24 | So a few weeks back, AlphaOmegaRadio became my 100th subscriber! To celebrate, I said I'd love to take any requests if they had one. They asked for this track from the game "Horn" and I did a happy dance. :DThe original is a rich score featuring a plethora of cool instruments! However, I'm leaving the ocarina mastering to the masters and picked a different group - oboe, tenor recorder, English horn, low whistle, pennywhistle, sho (don't judge me, I want to use it everywhere. EVERYWHERE).- I got about halfway through sequencing and realized I had no idea what I was doing. A lot of the notes are educated guesses. Ha!- It took like ten thousand takes to record the recorder, usually because of one or two unstable notes. Recorder is STILL not in tune. Walking In The Air (The Snowman) - English horn / Ocarina Cover Field of Reeds 2012-12-10 | Happy holidays! Here's something short and sweet for the festive season. I wish I had time to offer something more, but December is gig-central for musicians. I didn't even have time to write a proper intro, haha.However, this is one of my favorite wintery melodies. Live instruments are English horn, oboe, and ocarina! And once again, I can't figure out how to not make it sound like I recorded the reeds in a bathroom with a tape player. :|Original music is from "The Snowman", score by Howard Blake. "Days" taught us that there are two important things in life: Friendship, and ice cream. Phoenix Wright - Distant Traces of Beauty (Cover/Arrangement) Field of Reeds 2012-10-22 | The Phoenix Wright series is one of my very favorites. "Trials and Tribulations" is my favorite game of the series. Case 5 is my favorite case of the game. And this is possibly my favorite melody. I love everything about it and how it's used as both a character theme and a mood-setter.I did this arrangement awhile back, but decided it needed an upgrade - aka some real instruments. So, featured are shakuhachi, fife, Irish whistle, and my (second) absolute favorite instrument in the world, the sho. (Spoiler: I am not a very good shakuhachi player. Guild Wars 2 - Fear Not This Night (English horn cover) Field of Reeds 2012-10-22 | I'm definitely a poser here in that my friends have played this game but I haven't. However, the music is -gorgeous-, and as soon as I was introduced to this song, I wanted to listen to it again and again. The voicing is perfect for English horn, so it was the obvious choice of instrument. I only did the first verse because I couldn't figure out how to make the rest different and interesting without words, haha. The backtrack isn't perfect, but hey, my ear-training was never the best. ;) RETURN OF THE WINDCHIMES!Music by Jeremy Soule. English horn/oboe playing by me.
Zeldas Lullaby (Bass ocarina cover) Field of Reeds 2012-07-16 | Short and sweet! I think it's some sort of law that if you get within five feet of an ocarina, you have to play Zelda's Lullaby. So, I threw this together in celebration of getting to see the "Symphony of the Goddesses" 25th anniversary concert a couple nights ago. It's *incredible* in person.Live instruments are ocarina (triple bass), oboe and English horn. I feel better now!Original music is by Koji Kondo. Arrangement/performance by me. Journey - Main Theme (English horn cover) Field of Reeds 2012-07-10 | Austin Wintory's score to the PS3 game "Journey" is something really special, and if you've heard it, you know why. It seems like a great injustice to the score to attempt a cover, but I love it that much! This arrangement is sort of a mash-up of three different tracks from the OST: "Nascence", "I Was Born For This", and "Final Confluence" (the one track that made me the most teary-eyed). Live instruments are English horn, oboe, and a few measures of recorder in the middle. I still haven't figured out ideal recording settings... my mic picks up flutes really well, but not the double reeds! And the rest was sequenced in Sonar. :) Maybe the wind tunnel was unnecessary, but it's in my sample library and when else am I gonna get to use a wind tunnel??All original music is by Austin Wintory. Okamiden - Once Upon a Time (Cover) Field of Reeds 2012-05-08 | Here's something I made this afternoon, because I was really eager to start recording *something* Okami! It's my absolute favorite game (sequel included), so this is the first of many to come. :)All of the winds are live. The melody is played on a very fancy and expensive $10 plastic shinobue and I am out of tune... oh well! Enjoy!Music is by Rei Kondoh. I just re-built it in Sonar.

I do not play the trombone, so had to make do without it!I forget which friend of mine requested an Avatar track, but I love the series. The original "tsungi horn" track is solo duduk, but I would always "hear" chords underneath it in my head. Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep - Ventus (Oboe Cover) Field of Reeds 2012-04-12 | I finally got a recording microphone! To test it out is this direct cover/copy of "Ventus". It was sequenced from scratch, but still aimed to sound like the original. Accompaniment was played, oboe was recorded, and then it was tweaked. Really, I just always wanted to play this solo.
