We can only imagine how motivating it would be as a scientist to see your research change someone’s life.
Dr. Adrienne Scheck, PhD is a cancer biologist and brain cancer researcher studying ketogenic therapies as an adjunct to standard of care cancer treatments. Her research focuses on ketogenic therapies as an adjunct to radiation therapy in both adult and pediatric brain cancer. She has found that ketogenic diets enhance the efficacy of these treatments in animal models. And while many focus on ketogenic diets for lowering glucose, her lab’s focus extends to the unique contributions of ketones themselves.
Her research, along with others, is influencing the course of brain cancer patient outcomes. In her full interview, which you can access by signing up for our email list (link below), she shares her research and the success stories that inspire her work.
There are still several hurdles to overcome before metabolic therapies are fully tested in oncology, and these hurdles are what make advancements challenging. But as Dr. Scheck explains in her full interview, there are established biochemical changes that occur with ketogenic diets that more scientists and physicians are becoming aware of. Progress is happening, and it is scientists like Dr. Scheck who are paving the way to a better understanding of these therapies in oncology.

In this journal club episode of The Metabolic Link, we explore the "Metabolic Overdrive Hypothesis" with Dr. Dominic D'Agostino, Dr. Angela Poff, and Victoria Field, diving into the brain’s energy dysregulation in bipolar disorder. The featured paper, "The Metabolic Overdrive Hypothesis: Hyperglycolysis and Glutaminolysis in Bipolar Mania", by authors Dr. Iain Campbell and Dr. Harry Campbell, proposes that mitochondrial dysfunction forces the brain into a hypermetabolic state, leading to manic episodes.
We discuss how this groundbreaking research links bipolar disorder to epilepsy and how therapeutic ketosis—through diet or supplementation—might restore energy balance, reduce manic episodes, and complement traditional medications.
With the potential to reshape psychiatric treatment, you won't want to miss this paper or journal club episode! Read the full paper here: nature.com/articles/s41380-024-02431-w

Dr. Stephanie Venn-Watson, a veterinary epidemiologist, joins the show to share her groundbreaking research with the U.S. Navy’s Marine Mammal Program, where dolphins helped reveal the essential role of C15:0. C15:0 is an odd-chain saturated fatty acid that has 3-times more cellular benefits than omega-3s. While our primary source of C15:0 is from whole fat dairy foods, this healthy fat can also be found in some types of fish and plants. Dr. Venn-Watson surprisingly discovered that C15:0 (also called pentadecanoic acid) is an essential fatty acid - the first to be found in over 90 years. In this episode, we discuss how C15:0 plays an important role in longevity and metabolic health, its potential to reduce inflammation, improve mitochondrial function, and why it’s crucial for both dolphins and humans. Learn how this unique fatty acid is transforming our understanding of insulin resistance and why it could be a game-changer in human health. Plus, Dr. Venn-Watson also shares the exciting future of this essential fatty acid in human health research. Tune in for a journey through science, the sea, and metabolic resilience!

In this episode, recorded at Metabolic Health Summit 2024, Dr. Richard Johnson dives into the groundbreaking research that has uncovered the central role of fructose in driving the epidemics of obesity, diabetes, and a wide range of other metabolic diseases.
Dr. Johnson presents compelling evidence that fructose, a seemingly innocuous sugar, is in fact a key trigger for activating a powerful biological survival switch. This switch, evolved in nature to help animals prepare for times of scarcity, is now being inadvertently activated in humans by our modern high-carbohydrate, high-sugar diets.
Through detailed scientific explanation and insightful case studies, Dr. Johnson illuminates how fructose's unique metabolic effects - including its ability to lower ATP levels, induce leptin resistance, and promote fat storage - are the driving forces behind the rise of metabolic syndrome and its associated conditions.
Equally important, Dr. Johnson offers practical dietary recommendations and strategies to help individuals navigate this complex landscape, emphasizing the importance of reducing sugar, refined carbs, and processed foods, while embracing a low-carb, nutrient-dense approach.
This eye-opening episode is a must-listen for anyone seeking to understand the root causes of the metabolic health crisis and learn evidence-based solutions to reclaim their wellbeing.

The study, titled “Differential Peripheral Immune Signatures Elicited by Vegan Versus Ketogenic Diets in Humans” takes a deep dive into the multi-omic effects of these two very different dietary approaches. The researchers found that just two weeks on a ketogenic diet significantly enhanced markers of adaptive immunity, while the vegan diet was associated with increased innate immune function.
The hosts unpack these findings, discussing the potential mechanisms behind the divergent immune signatures, the limitations of the short-term study design, and the need for further research.
They also highlight the importance of carefully standardizing the macronutrient and micronutrient compositions of the dietary interventions to isolate the key drivers of the observed changes.
Overall, this episode provides a thought-provoking look at the profound impacts that diet can have on the functioning of our immune system, setting the stage for future studies exploring the therapeutic potential of nutritional approaches.

The first paper examines how allulose consumption influences metabolic factors like appetite, blood sugar, and insulin sensitivity through the release of key gut hormones and effects on carbohydrate digestion and metabolism. Read the paper here: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29317623
The second paper reviews multiple lines of evidence linking fructose metabolism to driving cancer progression. High fructose intake may directly supply tumors with fuel and biomolecular building blocks to grow while also creating an obesity and diabetic state that triggers cancer development. The paper proposes dietary fructose restriction as a potential anti-cancer intervention. She spotlights metabolic dysfunction as a key target, arguing that while cancer cells are typically addicted to glucose, most normal cells can thrive on ketones.
In preclinical studies, Dr. Scheck demonstrates ketogenic diets slow tumor growth, enhance chemotherapy and radiation, reduce inflammation, normalize gene expression, and empower the immune system against cancer. Her lab unravels the pleiotropic mechanisms beyond glucose restriction - epigenetic changes like histone acetylation, DNA methylation, and microRNA expression.
Excitingly, Dr. Scheck reveals unpublished data on patient experiences using the ketogenic diet for the ruthless pediatric brain cancer DIPG. Though still anecdotal, their stories suggest quality of life benefits and potential synergy prolonging life alongside standard therapies. She makes an urgent call for clinical trials, proposing ketogenic diets as the missing adjuvant to improve outcomes and reduce side effects for brain tumor patients.
