Wild Camping Snowdonia’s Last Remaining Wilderness

Border Raiders 2024-03-09 | In this video we wild camp in what many people consider to be Snowdonia’s last remaining wilderness, the rough and secluded Rhinog mountain range. The landscape, which is favourably compared with the Scottish highlands certainly lived up to its reputation, with fairly discreet trails and slow going boulder scrambles in parts.

The aim of the camp was to tackle and camp atop Rhinog Fach, commonly know as the king of the Rhinogs for it particularly rocky appearance and dominating butress. Our route took us through the beautifully secluded Bwlch Drws Ardudwy, which has been carved via glacial forces so many year ago. We then tackled the ascent work of the route, before finally reaching outfall of LLyn Hywel, which rested carefree imitating glass.

After lunch came final climb and with it our biggest challenge of the day, a slow going boulder field to navigate, just as the winter sun characteristically looked to retire early. We raced against the fading light and and impending clag to set up camp. We also take a look at the new X Mid Pro 1, a very popular ultralight tent.

The day finished with a curry night consisting of chicken and prawn tikka masala, naan breads, pilau rice along with popadoms and mango chutney.

Conquering the Welsh Matterhorn: Wild Camping in the shadow of Cnicht!

Border Raiders 2024-02-03 | In this video we head out on our first wild camp in the beautiful Moelwyn mountain range of Snowdonia National Park. Our journey centred on conquering Cincht, commonly referred to as the Welsh Matterhorn. From the summit we picked out a camp spot between two Llyn's a couple of miles in the distance. The weather was both windy and wet in typical British fashion.

Being unfamiliar to the area and with plenty of off piste navigating, we took our time to scour the location for a suitable camp. The tents on this trip are the Wild Country Blizzard 2, Fjallraven Abisko Lite 2 and Hilleberg Soul. Darkness fell quickly on camp, so we took to sheltering in the tents to start tea. on the menu was fillet beef in black pepper sauce with a few beers to wash it down.

The next morning came and so did the weather. The wind picked up and must have been gusting at around 40mph. Being inexperienced with a new tent, we then made a crucial and very costly mistake when packing away.

Hidden Tarn Wild Camp In The Scafells With Fjallraven Abisko Lite 2

Border Raiders 2023-09-25 | In this vid we head out in search of a rarely known tarn, hidden amongst the legendary Scafell Range in the Lake District.

Our journey took us from Seathwaite Fell, up to Styhead Tarn, before our final ascent took us up the famous Corridor Route in search of this hidden tarn.

After coming off least we found our destination and settled in to a brilliant wild camp amongst England’s highest peaks. The weather was sunny and warm and with this came a quick dip and a few beers to cool down and relax. The evening finished with a brilliant sunset followed by an amazing cloud inversion the next morning.

Camping amongst the Peak Districts infamous ‘Woolpacks’ | Essential Blizzard 2 Mod

Border Raiders 2023-09-17 | In this video we head out on our first wild camp in the beautiful Peal District. Our journey took us from the lush Vale of Edale, up through the ever popular Grindsbrook Clough and onto the Kinder Scout Plateau. The weather was both windy and wet in equal measures.

Once atop Kinder we made our way across the moorland paths, to what can only be described as the martian landscape that is the Woolpacks. The Woolpacks are a proud cluster of bulbous looking, Gritstone rock formations.

Being unfamiliar to the area and with plenty of peaty bogs about we took our time to scour the location for a suitable camp. Eventually, we came across a pretty well sheltered bowl that allowed us to pitch camp out of reach, of the worst of the elements. The tents on this trip are the Wild Country Blizzard 2 & OEX Bobcat, and Gossamer Gear The One. This is the camp that followed.

Border Raiders 2023-05-30 | In this wild camp we explore what many people consider to be, the best view of the prettiest location in the Lake District, Fleetwith Pike! After hiking from the Honister Slate Mine to Fleetwith Pike, we search for around for the perfect pitch and did we find it!

With already unbelievable views out overlooking Buttermere and Crummock Water, the evening gifted us a beautiful sunset and the feeling that summer was at last starting making an appearence. Fleetwith Pike is one of those locations that feels like perfection because a thousand things had to align coincidently, and by chance they did!

Border Raiders 2023-05-07 | In this spring wild camp we explore what many people consider to be, the most secluded location in the Lake District, the glacial Eskdale Valley! After hiking from the valley floor to upper Eskdale, we search for the ancient Sampson’s Stones in the hope of finding natural refuge against the high winds.

Alfred Wainwright in his guide "Walks from Ratty" describes Eskdale as "One of the loveliest of Lakeland's valleys, descends from the highest and wildest mountains in the district to the Sands of Ravenglass in a swift transition from bleak and craggy ridges to verdant woodlands and pastures watered by a charming river.”

OVERVIEW
In this winter wild camp we explore the now abandoned Moel Siabod slate quarry and slab works on the Gwydir (Ancaster) Estate. The quarry is believed to have operated from the end of the eighteenth century and consists of a series of ruined buildings, a large quarry (now flooded), slate spoil heaps and trackways.

We also take a first look at the Fjallraven Absiko Lite 1 and consider its pros and cons for our upcoming camp in Norway!

Rainy Wild Camp | Low Water | Scarp 1 | Hilleberg Soulo | New Alcohol Stove Setup

Border Raiders 2023-01-26 | On this camp, we headed up to Low Water, situated just below the Old Man Of Coniston in the Lake District.

The weather on the walk up was a mixed bag of both dreary showers, and episodes of sunny spells. A double rainbow even made an appearance.

The walk up took is past the now abandoned mines. This makes for something bit different and is a great opportunity to explore mining history of the region.

Low Water makes for a great site, especially when its experiencing a moody episode due to the adverse weather. Before long it was dark and the temps started to drop so it was quickly into the tents to settle down for the long winters night.

A Cosy Night In The Lake Districts Most SECLUDED Mountain Bothy!

Border Raiders 2023-01-15 | On this camp, we headed up to what is possibly the Lake Districts most secluded and least known bothy, Lingy Hut!

We set off from the bottom of Grainsgill Beck, sticking to the well marked path which makes its way to the now abandoned Carrock Wolframite Mine. The mine has a really interesting information board, which details the sites history and geography. Setting off from the mine, we chose to continue up Grainsgill Beck, towards the top of Great Lingy Hill. The path was in parts muddy and required a river crossing in one section, but overall, the trail is fairly clear and obvious.

⚠️ Tent Destroyed in Mountain Storm | Red Warning Wild Camp | Angle Tarn | Helm 2

Border Raiders 2022-11-19 | On this trip we head up into the Lake Districts mountains and venture to wild camping hotspot, Angle Tarn (Patterdale).

The Plan was to head up to Angle Tarn, before looking for a spot to pitch somewhere between Calfgate Gill and Prison Gill. We set up camp and took in the amazing views overlooking Hayeswater and watched a magnificent sunset over the Helvellyn range, along with a Harvest Moon. This area also makes for a great deer spotting location, and for the second time we managed to steal a glimpse.

This video features footage of our camp during Storm Arwen. It was a wild night and made for some truly spectacular scenes the next morning, when we awoke to the first snow of the year. Looking back however, we certainly won’t be looking to camp out in these sort of conditions again. A red weather warning was issued and winds reached up too 100mph. When we departed the next morning, the damage was staggering with most roads closed due to fallen trees and walls.

5 Day Wild Camp in Rugged Norwegian Wilderness

Border Raiders 2022-10-18 | On this trip we travel to one of Europes most mountainous countries, with a renowned outdoor heritage. With peaks that tower over 2000m, and crystal clear waters that carve remarkable valley landscapes.

We spend 5 days exploring Rondane, its oldest national park. The route we took was a modified version of the popular Rondane triangle route, one of the country’s most famous multi day hikes. It’s centred around the tallest mountain in the range, Rondslottet.

Nantlle Ridge Scramble | Lyn Cwm Silyn Wild Camp

Border Raiders 2022-08-30 | Join us on our Snowdonia, heat wave Wild-Camp. We started the trip by parking at the Beddgelert forest. The car park here is free and is fairly large so availability shouldn’t be an issue, providing you don’t arrive at peak times. For those using public transport, there is both a train and bus service that runs to the town of Beddgelert itself.

The plan on this wild camp was to head from Beddgelert forest to Lyn Cwm Silyn, via the mighty Nantlle Ridge. This camp fell on one of the hottest days of the year, with temperatures reaching 30 degrees in the late afternoon, making for a good old slog.

Stoney Cove Wild Camp | 35mph+ Wind | Helm 2 Compact | Vaude Terra Hogan 2P

Border Raiders 2022-08-10 | Location: Lake District. We started the trip by parking at the Kirkstone Pass Inn. The car park here sits atop the pass, is free and is fairly large so availability shouldn’t be an issue, providing you don’t arrive at peak times. Conveniently, a bus service also stops here, making it a great option for those looking to use public transport.

The plan on this wild camp was to head from Kirkstone Pass, up to Stoney Cove Pike, eventually reaching High Street to wild camp overlooking Hayeswater.

The day started well and was bright and warm, but as we headed up onto the more exposed fell tops, it quickly became apparent the wind was picking up. By the time we had reached Stoney Cove a consistent wind of 25mph, with frequent guts of 35mph had developed and was pushing up from Trout Beck Valley.

Heron Pike Lake District Wild Camp | Overlooking Ullswater

Border Raiders 2022-06-09 | Heron Pike - Provides some of the best views overlooking Ullswater and being only a short distance from Glenridding itself, makes for good accessibility.

Finding a pitch can be tricky (especially winter months) as the summit can be boggy and is exposed to strong winds blowing down Glenridding Beck, off the slopes of Helvellyn.

Although level ground is scarce, pitching on the East facing slope, between Glenridding Beck and Glencoyne Beck offers great protection from the prevailing winds, whilst providing incredible views.

This evening’s camp took place in January 2022 and featured an incredibly strong and consistent wind ripping down from Glenridding Beck. You could hear it throughout the night as it whistled past the exposed face of Heron Pike, which itself acted as a a natural windbreak for the East facing slope we found ourselves on.

Blea Water Wild Camp | The Deepest Tarn in The Lake District

Border Raiders 2022-05-14 | Blea Water mountain wild camp

On this route we headed out from Haweswater Reservoir, following Small Water Beck until we eventually arrived at Small Water itself. We then used Nan Bield Pass as a route up to High Street, before finally dropping down onto the slopes of Blea Water.

At just over 200 feet (63 m) deep, Blea Water (meaning dark blue in old Norse), is the deepest tarn in the Lake District.

It was an unusually peaceful evening in the mountains, with only passing deer for company. Keith was in the Robens Starlight 1 for the night, whilst Sam was in the Vaude Terra Hogan 2p.
