Halo 2: Why We Mod
updated
I tend to operate in a bubble. Let me know what you guys like seeing.
Very special thanks to these guys who helped me out with charting. This probably wouldn't have happened without these guys:
3-Up
Riley the Fox
Inventor211
BlueMetal
Plumato
Miscellany
And also a very special thanks to those of you that stuck with me while I streamed working on this!
FL Project Time: 417 hours
Gamo, Jacob Landon, BlueMetal, and Plumato all did a serious amount of work in charting or helping chart the lower level difficulties (Easy, Medium, and Hard).
Magister Ingenia, Sidney600, and Digital Squirrel all gave a lot of feedback in improving the drums in the song up to and including re-composing some the drum parts themselves.
Also big shout out to all the people who hung out in Twitch watching me chart and compose the song. I know a lot of you helped out and gave advice so I apologize that I can't name you all. I probably would have removed the "Pirates" section and done other things without your feedback.
All difficulties are charted (Easy, Medium, Hard, Expert). Coop and drum charts will come out in the future.
The mastering here was quick and dirty. I will probably do a more thorough job when the drum/coop tracks are released.
*NOTE: YOU MUST BE ON THE LATEST VERSION OF CLONE HERO (v21.6) TO PROPERLY PLAY SOULLESS 5*

A video from me is long overdue. Alternative names were Gray Boy and Black Twin. Still doing some minor editing on the audio and chart. Will probably send some beta charts to some streamers.
I will probably do a video on executing arbitrary code in Guitar Hero III through the use of a buffer overflow exploit next.
A lot of work went into this video. Please leave a comment if you have any questions. This is a very technical video so if you have zero experience with programming a lot of this will probably go over your head. I try to dumb down as many things in the video as I can but I can only do so much. I'll add an FAQ here eventually if I answer enough of the same questions in the comments.
The fix for those that are still playing Guitar Hero III and don't want to make it themselves. Overwrite the existing file in your scripts folder. http://www.mediafire.com/file/es4s1cga1t56ycx/engine_params.qb.xen
Shoutout to Megapeng for letting me use footage from his stream. His youtube page if you're curious: youtube.com/user/megapengproductions
This isn't optimal. Without changing the path I am missing up to 400 points on the sixth activation. Redoing this would be painful though and I suspect there may be a better path anyways. I didn't spot any other potential improvements. Starpower path was done by Blue with some modifications from me.
New bits about Helga:
• Helga is now aware of star power in the song and will try to not overlap without being told to.
• Helga will no longer whammy every note like a maniac that's out of control
• Helga will shape the whammy into sawtooth, square, and a couple other types of waves.
• Helga releases pressed frets after a while
• Helga will anchor notes under certain conditions.
This is optimal barring the possible use of the 200ms bug which I think would make this video considerably more difficult to watch. Everything here could potentially be done by a human but won't. I hope no one actually finds something improvable here because I don't want to have to make a new video. I would like to give a shoutout to ukogmonkey and Blu3Metal for reviewing the bot's performance with me and suggesting tweaks which resulted in the score you see before you. I am pretty sure at least two of the squeezes in this video have never been hit by a human.
Some info on Helga's behavior:
• Helga whammies every note right now. She has the functionality to stop whammying if needed but that isn't used in TTFAF. She whammies softly which is why it is somewhat hard to notice.
• Helga will strum every normal note on time unless told otherwise (such as on the third activation).
• While under starpower, Helga will hit every note as early as possible.
• Helga will never drop a hold note early
• Helga activates starpower and hits notes on the same frame.
• Helga will wait until the point is reached where waiting until the next frame would cause her to miss the note before activating
Some data on GH3's timing window:
Front window: 116ms
Back window: 100ms or half the distance to the next note, whichever is smaller
Hammerons have a smaller front window than strum notes (86ms). You cannot choose to strum a hammeron to hit it earlier as the game will ignore the strum. The back window of hammerons shrinks in the same manner as strum notes.
HelgaBot is a squeezing Guitar Hero 3 bot. That means it will abuse the timing window in the game to hit as many notes under star power as possible.
Shout out to Sidney for helping me with mapping the path for the bot. It was a very tedious process and having a helping hand was nice.
I'd like to give a shout out to LocalH who did some preliminary tests on this for me which led to me investigating this more. This was originally going to be a short footnote in a video of GH3 quirks but I thought it was interesting enough for a full video.
Here's the plugin for any of you insane enough to want to play a song that's two hours or longer: http://www.mediafire.com/file/r7coool4muli4bo/SongLimitFix.dll
Here's the full video of the initial test run of the two hour and ten minute test song. I actually recorded it for over two hours to see what would happen. youtube.com/watch?v=S-H2pfhPcrQ
This is the audio of the test song at the very end of the video. It's a work in progress. http://www.mediafire.com/file/jfaj4wp0i76635x/Crash_Test_5.mp3
Open Note Zones (Game will crash on songs with open notes without this): drive.google.com/file/d/0B7GfChPi6nxjZGRYT3h4MklrM0U/view?usp=sharing
As implied in the title, the major change in this release is the implementation of open notes. There are some minor issues that need to be worked out with them but nothing that means I should hold off releasing it any longer. The video is showing most of the code required for open notes to work.
There are a lot of behind the scenes changes that plugin writers will enjoy. Also added Aditu's fix for the speedhack plugin so it no longer requires going into practice mode to setup and shouldn't kill FPS like it used to.

The primary mods used that made this such an intense affair were:
Bob's mods
Angels Mods' (With infinite ore/oil/fissure minimum yields lowered to 5%)
CMH's End Game Mod
RSO
Bob's mods adds a truly insane amount of new ores and intermediate products to the game. Getting the equivalent of green chips is harder than making processors in vanilla factorio. One thing I will probably change in the future if we use bob's mods again is disabling raw modules as they allowed us to truly go nuts without having to worry about power or pollution although they do take quite a lot of resources to make.
Angel's mods makes it so we have to get all of the ores (iron, copper, lead, tin, zinc, nickel, cobalt, aluminum, gold, silver, titanium, tungsten) from six different unprocessed ores and mineral sludge if you figure out how to make it and set it up. Oh and we also need gems which is a whole different kind of nightmare.
Layout of Ore unloading and processing:
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=844306359
Layout of plate processing:
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=844306431
CMH's endgame mod made it so we had to have all the late game materials in order to build the rocket that were otherwise optional (ie, tungsten, cobalt steel, titanium, processing boards, module 8s, etc.). Making rocket fuel became truly insane as it required nitroglycerin, dimethylhydrazine gas, and hydrazine gas.
Resource Spawner Overhaul (RSO) made it so we had to use trains as ore patches were much further apart but we didn't have to use trains to heavily regardless even though we made a pretty nice train network.
A modified version of Credo's time lapse mod was used in order to take 10000x10000 screenshots every minute. The modification I had to make to it was to make it so it only took a screenshot for the host (me) as my friends did not have the video memory to take 10000x10000 screenshots nor the hard drive space (280MB screenshots every minute). I would like to give a big shoutout to the awesome factorio devs who patched the screenshot function of the game to allow mods to take screenshots for specific players. When I asked them about this they responded that they were patching it into the game 48 hours later. Fantastic developers. For those wondering, over 7000 screenshots were taken and this totaled to over 1.4 terabytes of disk space. This video took about 16 hours to render.
There are some other mods we used into the video that we disabled such as reactors, belt sorter, and AAI because around half way through the video they began putting a load on network clients that was so high the game became unplayable outside of singleplayer.
Something I didn't show in this video is the 500MW of steam backup power we had. As long as each buffer chest has 100 coal in it, the pumps will pump boiling water into the tanks. This was if a chest was out of coal, we wouldn't be pumping cold water into the tanks. There is some weak load balancing on the inserters to make sure the chest with the least coal will get "dibs" on the coal on the belt. Once accumulator power falls below 10%, an SR latch is flipped which turns on pumps which will pump the stored boiling water into the steam engines. When the accumulators hit a specified threshold, the SR latch is flipped off and the pumps shut down.

Things to do:
Fix gem mutation
Fix coop since everything is broken in multiplayer now
Sustains
Things I'm not gonna do:
Add that purple hit effect
Things I'll maybe do:
Fix which frets flames appear on when hitting open notes
The gem itself is not destroyed when the note is hit.
Open notes are worth 0 points instead of the proper 50.
If the starpower phrase ends on an open note it is impossible to get starpower from that phrase.
The open note sprite is not final.
Trying to figure out the specifics on animated sprites now since this information isn't stored in the texture metadata / qbimages and the structures for sprites are fairly enormous and have many layers of indirection.
I had some issues with Adobe Premiere rendering and I cannot figure out how to fix the quality of text at some parts of the video. Sorry about that.

This is the latest version of GH3+. The big changes:
- Rewrote everything to be less likely to trigger antiviruses. This should alleviate a lot of headaches
- Fixed gem mutation with tap notes and star power / star power phrases.
- Includes all plugins I previously released but scattered everywhere (Shitty speed hack + others)
- Included gem shuffle plugin
- Include the plugin that makes everything lightning (because why not?)
- Includes Open-GHTCP which is a reverse engineered version of GHTCP that can be used to import tap notes among other things. See the notes inside or check out No1mann's channel for his specfic changes.
For others interested in hacking GH3 here's the my latest IDA database for gh3.exe. I will be making a tutorial video soon on how I develop my hacks. If anyone has a hack suggestion for me to use in the tutorial please suggest it in the comments below.

I would like to give a shoutout to AdituV for being an awesome person who does things that I don't want to do like figure out scripts. Shoutout to No1mann for reviving Open-GHTCP which was something I had gotten bored with a while ago.
Also shoutouts to Blue, whamer100, and my other regular stream visitors when I'm grinding away in IDA for hours at a time.
- Activating starpower
- Starpower running out
- Missing a starpower phrase
Will be releasing with the updated GH3+ sometime later today most likely.
New GH3+ release soon. New features will include it not getting detected as a trojan by most antivirus software and fixed gem mutation for tap notes when SP activates, SP runs out, or an SP phrase was missed. Behind the scene changes include setting things up for unloading plugins so that a plugin menu can be implemented in game (bully Aditu about this).
Also if you're interested, I along with some other dudes are working on reversing GHTCP. This project's on GitHub at github.com/ExileLord/Open-GHTCP. This also extends GHTCP's functionality (eg. import charts with tap notes).

Special thanks to Blue to for doing most of the grunt work placing the tapping notes. Also thanks to Plu for doing this behind my back at some point in time as well.
FC Score for this and the classic chart will be the same.
No1mann has been taking over my hack work on reversing GHTCP and has gotten it to import songs with tap notes. Hopefully he irons out the rest of the issues with the obfuscated code soon. You'll hopefully have a new (unofficial) release of GHTCP soon.
The specific no-no is this:
A single note/sustain (Red, Yellow, Blue, Orange)
followed by
A HOPO chord SUSTAIN with the highest note of the chord being the preceding note. This cannot be hit without strumming the note.
Game is "The Lab" by Valve, a virtual reality tech demo for the HTC Vive.
The other person using a greatbow with me was Clopsy. The host/bait was VoiDeD.
This is a time lapse of a Factorio game played with a group of friends and myself. The most notable mod used in this video (excluding the time lapse mod) was hardcrafting which made mining much more difficult during the early game and slower during the late game. The next was probably nuclear power which ended up being too strong in our opinion and we probably won't use it again without tweaking it.
List of mods:
advanced-logistics-system_0.2.13
Advanced-Weaponry_0.3.1
autofill_1.3.12
blueprint-string_2.2.0

Also I'm trash at this game so pls no bully

Also special thanks to Blue for being so slow that I reinstalled GH3 twice and tested the plugin myself before he got around to it.
Also Windows Defender getting upset at things I made myself is frustrating.
Version as of 9/11/16: http://www.mediafire.com/download/b3t71gpvh1pavb8/GHTCP_Fix_1.0.1.zip
Because forcing everyone to sit through a disclaimer on launch and refusing to let people edit GH3 with other tools is fucking childish. In the future this will import songs with tap notes among other things.
As an FYI, some antiviruses are detecting this as a Strictor variant. I'm not sure why this is exactly. The exe was made by cleaning the GHTCP exe with de4dot and then editing the IL Code with Reflexil. I'll be checking on the bitdefender forum for some insight.
Updated IDA Database for those of you who want to hack apart GH3: http://www.mediafire.com/download/q5qbif56vh5zi8a/GH3_IDA_Database_%28Feb_2016%29.7z
I would like to give updates with methods other than video uploads (maybe a blog or something). If any of you have suggestions, I'm all ears.
I should really come up with a better way to release this stuff since making a video each time is tedious.
Also here's some beta/proof of concept plugins for you to mess around with if you want.
dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3569419/KeyHijacker.dll (1.5x song speed. You must play a song on slower once to initialize it)
dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3569419/DisableTilt.dll (Disables tilt activation for star power)
dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3569419/AlwaysDoubleNotes.dll (Always double notes. HOPO is broken unless you force strums or tap notes)
dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3569419/MirrorMode.dll (Mirror mode. HOPO stuff is broken)
I'm reusing the blue tap note texture for starpower because I am more or less out of options so if you have some weird custom colors because you're a special snowflake, you're out of luck.
Just drop this in the PLUGINS folder in your Guitar Hero III directory, overwriting the other one.
http://www.mediafire.com/download/i90jb1xpxgr053k/TapHopoChord.7z
This release fixes the bug where tapping/hopo chords didn't work for player 2 in co-op. It turned out that the player index I was trying to use was already destroyed.
I've also included the source code for the plugins in their current state. The project is a little messy but I never got around to cleaning it up.
Old Download (for the curious): http://www.mediafire.com/download/lkbyylkbiijjbeb/GH3%2B_v0.3.7z
Composed and charted by me for Community Track Pack 4 which is probably being released sometime in December. I need to get Blue to chart starpower for me because I can't be assed. Both sides are being played by a bot.
For the people who know what they're doing, here you go:

Blue charted the song for me after I begged him to so shout out to him.
Although it is probably obvious, I am playing co-op by myself. Lead and Rhythm are charted specifically to reflect the left and right guitar that MAB plays.
This is a quick video explaining how these things work. Also this has the whammy fix so apologies if you don't want that for whatever reason.
