Supersonic Revolution - They Took us by Storm (Official Music Video)

Arjen Anthony Lucassen 2023-05-19 | Dear friends, here’s the 4th single and videoclip taken from Supersonic Revolution’s first album
‘Golden Age of Music’. I’ll explain what the lyrics are about!

Album sleeves were always so important for me back then in the original days of vinyl LPs! I bought a lot of albums just because of the cover art. And my absolute favourite design company was the mighty Hipgnosis team. Their head man was called Storm Thorgerson, which explains the wordplay on ‘Storm’ in the song title. These lyrics talk about four of my favourite Hipgnosis sleeves: obviously Led Zeppelin’s ‘Houses Of The Holy’ and Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’, two of the most iconic front covers of all time. The other two are not as well known: ‘Electric Warrior’ by T. Rex (the first album I ever bought) and UFO’s ‘Phenomenon’. Incidentally, I only discovered years later that on the UFO cover the guy is throwing a hubcap in the air and the lady is sneakily photographing it as if it were a real UFO!

My guess is that a lot of people will think this lyric is about David Bowie. But they would only be partly right… it is actually about his fictional character Ziggy Stardust. Ziggy was an alien character that Bowie created back in the early 70s with his album ‘The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars’. I have to admit that I never really understood the deeper meaning behind this concept album, but I did my best to give it my own spin here! Alien creatures land on Earth with a mission to set the children free. The aliens only have 5 years to do this, but they fail hopelessly. Ziggy dies on stage. But… Bowie lived on, and how!

This song The Glamattack is about the rise of glamrock in the early seventies with acts like T Rex, Sweet, Alice Cooper and David Bowie. Back then I wanted to BE these artists! I even remember stealing my mother’s wig and singing into a hairbrush in front of the mirror. I really loved the theatrics and the outrageous image of these glitter bands; they were about more than just music.

This video was made by Dave Letelier, and for me he really captured the colorful vibe of the early seventies. Yeah sure… it’s totally over-the-top and excruciatingly colorful, but that’s what this band is all about… MORE = MORE 😊

Both singer Sir Russell Allen and guitar player Michael Romeo of Symphony X recorded their parts in the States. I still remember when Russell played their contributions to me on the phone, I literally cried tears of joy! This song has become one of the fan’s favourites, judging from the crowd’s reaction every time we play it live.

Arjen Lucassen announces 3 shows at the 013 venue in Tilburg in September 2023

After 4 sold out ‘Ayreon - Electric Castle Live & other Tales’ shows at the 013 venue in The Netherlands in 2019 (attended by 12,000 Ayreon fans from 64 countries) and 3 sold out ‘Ayreon Universe’ shows in 2017, Ayreon is poised to add yet another exciting chapter to its live history with "01011001 Live Beneath the Waves." This upcoming production is based on the highly acclaimed Ayreon concept album ‘01011001’, originally released in 2008. The album will be performed in its entirety, plus a few extra songs. It will be a huge live production, with an amazing stage design, stunning visuals, special FX and…a unique live surround audio experience!

Ayreon mastermind Arjen Lucassen and keyboardist Joost van den Broek have gathered loads of the original singers of the 01011001 album and many special guests, alongside a stellar group of instrumentalists to perform the 01011001 album live to the highest musical standard possible. Arjen himself will also feature on vocals. It's shaping up to be the biggest cast of any live Ayreon show to date. The show is called ‘Live beneath the waves’ since most of the story of the album takes place on the aquatic Planet Y. The show will transport you visually into this technological underwater world. To give the fans coming from all over the world the full Ayreon experience, the city of Tilburg will once again be transformed into an Ayreon city with many special Ayreon-themed events. There will be an Ayreon pop-up store with many exciting elements and special performances, and the ‘Electric Castle Live & other Tales’ will be played at the Pathé cinema.There will also be an Ayreon camping site, big Ayreon flags all through the city and restaurants and bars will have special Ayreon themes and deals. There will also be Ayreon beer, discount coupons for fans at shops, etc etc…everything possible to make it an unforgettable experience!

And the Druids Turn To Stone is my personal favourite track from the Ayreon Universe live shows. Mainly because of the amazing vocal performance of my talented friend Damian Wilson. I still remember that back when I sent him the demo for this song, he wasn’t totally convinced. Maybe in part because of the dangerously-close-to-Spinal-Tap lyrics about Stonehenge. Haha! But man, he surely elevated this song to great heights, showing off all aspects of his versatile and distinctive voice. In the re-mixed version I tried to make the track sound more transparent and bring every little subtlety to the surface. Hope I succeeded!

I must say Into the Black Hole is one of my personal favorite songs on the Flight of the Migrator album. Particularly because of the amazing vocal performance of the mighty Bruce Dickinson. It was a true honor and pleasure for me to record one of my favorite singers of all time in my studio. I love the fact that his singing in this track is so different from the (often faster) Iron Maiden material. If you listen well, you can hear that in this re-mixed version I used some vocal lines that I didn’t use in the original version. I also think that especially the drums sound way more powerful than in the original version.
