The ruthless drivers of climate change, armed conflict, and natural disasters have sparked wave after wave of humanitarian crises — and at times, it’s too easy to dismiss the consequences. Journalist Heba Aly will not allow such complacency. As CEO of The New Humanitarian, an independent nonprofit, Aly leads a newsroom that delivers high-impact journalism from the heart of crises, amplifying voices of those in need and those who seek to help. In this fireside chat, she will discuss the power of storytelling in impacting change on a global scale. She will share her personal experience reporting from conflict zones as well as her leadership of The New Humanitarian, which is transforming coverage of global crises. Aly and her newsroom are the recipients of the 2023 Elisabeth B. Weintz Humanitarian Award from the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative.

Tuberculosis deaths are on the rise again, after declining for more than a decade, and the threat of drug-resistant strains looms large. But there are glimmers of hope — including new research into the reasons treatment often fails. Our panel of experts will share the latest science, policy, and health care innovations -- and explore how we can apply lessons from COVID -- to halt the spread of one of the world’s deadliest infectious diseases. We’ll also hear from a TB survivor who is fighting to reduce stigma and improve treatment. Join us for this important discussion in advance of World TB Day.

On April 15, 2013, two explosions rocked the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Within minutes, authorities from multiple jurisdictions launched an extraordinary collaborative effort to treat victims, clear crowds, track down the bombers, and calm a rattled city. Researchers would later call that approach “swarm leadership.” A decade later, we bring together leaders from the front lines and emergency preparedness experts to tell the inside story of the response. Our panelists will share key lessons learned and explore how the principles and practices implemented in Boston can help us prepare for future crises.

Husseini Manji has spent decades directing research into the biology, diagnosis, and treatment of mental illnesses at the National Institutes for Health and Johnson & Johnson. Despite important advances, many diseases remain intractable. Manji has called for a “Manhattan Project” approach to mental disorders and dementia that would bring together disparate fields, including neurobiology, technology, drug discovery, and societal interventions to change the way mental health is treated. Manji will sit down with Ipsit Vahia, Director of the Technology and Aging Laboratory, McLean Hospital, to talk about the future of mental health care.

The Environmental Protection Agency is launching a new Office of Environmental Justice and vowing to use its regulatory power to mitigate the impact of climate change and pollution on poor and minority communities. Those sound like bold initiatives — but what do they mean in practice? Join us for a conversation with David Cash, the EPA’s regional administrator for New England, about the EPA’s plans to address environmental injustice on the ground. This event is presented jointly with the Harvard Chan-NIEHS Center for Environmental Health.
