For 55 years, College of the Atlantic students have taken advantage of the college’s extraordinary location to learn in the field—in the woods, on the water, and far beyond Mount Desert Island.
As part of Alumni Weekend 2026, COA alumni, faculty, students, and staff gathered for a daylong colloquium reflecting on the role field ecology has played in the college’s history and in an education in human ecology.
Through a series of panel discussions and conversations spanning generations and disciplines, participants explored how hands-on fieldwork has shaped their lives and worldviews; how the tools and practices of field research have evolved; and why immersive experiences observing, measuring, recording, collecting, and learning from the natural world remain relevant today.
