So to those of you that don't know, the Ringu theme I made four years ago was and still is the most popular thing I've ever made. No joke, if you go incognito and search "Ringu theme" it is the first result, which is nuts. So as you can see, me and this specimen have a...history. So when I got the chance to tackle her evolved form, for a while it was difficult to step out of the shadow I cast over myself. So in the end I decided to stop my attempts at surpassing it, and just did a complete stylistic left turn. Every sample you hear in this tune (minus the drums) is made from either the remix I made or the actual Evolved Ringu chase theme. It was kind of a blast designing all of the little synths and samples that pop in throughout the song! I was stuck on the Spooper theme for a long time, since (SPOILERS FOR THE WAMBU VIDEO) Wambu had told me that Spooper was his top spot, and thus I wanted to do something special for the little (?) guy(?). I had just missed the last train to my hotel, and so I resigned myself to my fate and walked two hours there. While walking through the Tokyo streets, I listened to an album called "Ugly Season" by Perfume Genius. The sound of that album (particularly the song Hellbent) inspired the vibe I was aiming for, especially in its synth and guitar (?) work, creating vast soundscapes that reminded me of Spooper's spores that envelop the air and [I WANT THIS SONG TO BE ADVERTIZER FRIENDLY].Although Ugly Season was a huge inspiration, I was also trying to hit a sound close to Akira Yamaoka's The Reverse Will (which is one of Wambu's favorite songs, btw.) so he would like it. What was the point I was making. I don't know. I forgot because I keep thinking about how awesome Wambu is. Time does fly. Anyway, most of this song is, in fact, completely made up from household objects, recorded and effected to oblivion (sans the Hanged Man scream, which is ripped from the original chase theme). I wanted to capture a sense of oncoming dread with that pounding bassline (which was made from me tapping a mic cable on my finger, yes I'm serious.) which kind of takes over the mix. His motivations remain unclear, but to me that's what makes his ties to the main cast so intresting, and his subtle manipulation of each one of them so effective. His theme in the original laid a fine basis and does kind of show how chaotic he can be, but I wanted to take it further. I made it funky, and this song is tied for being my favorite arrangement from the soundtrack. I started with making up a motif to signify him, this motif appears in a lot of other tracks, I won’t tell you which though and in what way! For the production I was very much inspired by Sly and the Family Stone and a lot of stuff Nile Rodgers and Cory Wong made, the way they sort of layer yheir guitars in this…funk wall was really inspiring. This song has a total of eight guitars! Which is way more than any other track I worked on, considering I don’t know how to play guitar! (I chopped up a bunch of different guitar samples and plugins!) I think Maple is a super fun character. Her aesthetic of pancakes fused with this eerie notion that she can snap at any moment created a really really neat sound aesthetic in my head, and also in the game itself, Maple’s themes are some of my favorites in the soundtrack! And I had a neat little idea for her first one:So, at the time of release (July 21st, 2023) this arrangement is officially two days old! I’m not kidding, I started this project two days before it was released, and weirdly it quickly became one of my favorites in the whole soundtrack. Maple’s original theme was already magical to me, it fit the character and the mood of the scenes it was in so well that I really didn’t want to do much besides switch it to B minor instead of C because it felt more…Alice in Wonderland-ish to me, but eventually I kind of spiraled down the rabbit hole (pun entirely intended) and almost finished it ten minutes later. While on the bus to a different place I thought of a really cool idea for an ending, a short waltz section, reminiscent of both of my friend’s compositions and the soundtrack for Umineko When They Cry (which is a fantastic visual novel that you should read!!!!) that cuts off prematurely, ending the loop, that section, took me an hour to make, it is 15 seconds long. The reason I’m bringing it up is because this song actually uses the same samples I used in a song from that album, so it's kind of a redemption arc for me, if you will. Okay now to the actual song. I wanted to encapsulate both my love of dubstep metal and the danceability of groove metal, and I think I did an alright job. I’m quite proud of the sound design in this one specifically, especially in the ending section where I allowed myself to go ham with both sound design and leitmotifs, I also chose to include the minecart song as the “chorus” section because in my opinion it was criminally underutilized in the actual game and I found a cool harmony\lead that went along with it in a really pretty way. What I loved about it is how overwhelming is a good way it felt, and I wanted to give this track which basically feels like you’re about to genuinely win for the first time the same feeling, I like to think I suceeded. Through the entire overwhelming second part I wanted to include the Deep thought motif which pops up throughout the soundtrack, I like to think it fits there. I also put a bunch of other leitmotifs! See if you can find them! Localization reason - The Metadata title for this one is 勇気2 which means 'Courage 2', in case you are wondering, no there is no Courage 1. This is one of my favorite tracks in the game already, and when I heard it with the project in mind I already knew what I wanted to do with it, again, pretty much everything here is made from one synth (Vital) besides the main loop, a main gripe I have with the soundtrack is that most of the songs are in the same key, and while doesn’t detract from their value I would’ve loved more diversity, and settling on a key for Majority Rules specifically was very very hard considering how iconic the original is, For most of the project’s lifespan I was considering C# Minor and periodically B Minor (fun fact: changing the song to B minor crashed my laptop!) but I think Eb Minor in the end fits the most! It has a flair of royalty and formality while still feeling distinctly sinister, which was very much the intention. Ah yes, the “we’re getting backstory about the Hades Incident” song. I wanted it to be a bit more engaging and also a bit more sinister and a little more engaging. I decided to also include the Samurai Woman motif along with the Cardiogram motif for reasons I cannot disclose here (spoilers for the game and such) what I can tell you however is about the percussion, the instrument being played here is a calabash, yes, it's made from the fruit, and yes it sound dope.Localization Reason - The CD2 title for this song is イアイスキ - イアイ refers to "居合" which is the motion of a quick draw and sheath of a sword. スキ refers to like, a gap or moment in time. So the song is basically means "the moment where 居合 happens." The percussion on this one was very very fun to make and the section where the motifs come in to signify Sara’s journey thus far was also very rewarding to make. I decided to overlay the main melody with a Shamisen, and I think it helped emphasize the Samurai in Samurai Woman. I feel like he’s one of the most interesting subversions on the typical murder mystery rival character I’ve ever seen. You genuinely have no idea what he’ll do next, and I find that sense of dread and mystery intoxicating. I wanted to incorporate that in his theme, so I moved it up to D minor since it feels more…outwardly sinister and a bit bratty, in a way. Most of the percussion and drums in the first section is made from my recordings of construction that was happening outside my house at the time. As for the main melody, You’ll notice that it is an altered version of a certain motif. This leitmotif also recurs throughout the soundtrack. I was very much unsure if tackling the Cardiogram tracks was the right move, but me and a friend got such a good idea that it would’ve been a waste not to do it. A while back, a friend showed me how unbelievably great most of the songs from Who wants to be A Millionaire are, and I couldn’t agree more, a thing we both liked is how each time the question gets more intense, the key goes up a half step, which helped create tension and intensity, so I decided I wanted to do the same thing for the many many different variations of the Cardiogram. We start off slow, in the regular key of C, I didn’t really do much for this one to be honest, I played a melody which I thought I could interpolate in interesting ways and across a variety of different instruments.After that we reach the second section which is in C# Minor, I loved the idea of the Majority Rules strings playing in the background so I managed to isolate the parts and spread them to each ear, that drum playing in the background is a very edited Tabla btw. Next we get the Climax, which is my favorite. It is very much unapologetically inspired by another murder game soundtrack, but I tried to give it my own unique touch, I hope I succeeded! The two next sections aren’t noteworthy by themselves, they just create more intensity and help with the buildup to the eventual second Climax, which returns to the original; key of C Minor to encapsulate the sheer scope of the track.The two remaining section play in Chapter 3-1B, Since this is a game with Meister and Midori, I thought it would be fitting to insert their leitmotifs as well (in the first and second sections respectively) Going into a more jazz influence was mostly because I thought it fit the tone of the Chapter a bit better, since the subgame does have a flair for the dramatic. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Your Turn To Die Remixed is a playable music mod that I’ve been working on for over a year, it is compatible with both the Steam and non-Steam releases of the game, and features 16 arrangements of some of the songs in the soundtrack. As for the track itself, well…there isn’t much to say to be honest. I can tell you that besides the main loop everything you hear was made with one synth, Vital (which is free, btw!) and the only really interesting tidbit is about the middle section, which you may notice has the main motif playing an octave below what it should be, this is due to a process I put it through called Warping, which causes an audio to be put through an algorithm determining its original speed and creating some really interesting results, in the GarageBand loop case it actually made for some really unique harmonies!-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Your Turn To Die Remixed is a playable music mod that I’ve been working on for over a year, it is compatible with both the Steam and non-Steam releases of the game, and features 16 arrangements of some of the songs in the soundtrack.
