I thank my God upon every remembrance of you) - UVEUntitled Virtual Ensemble2023-11-11 | The Untitled Virtual Ensemble's (UVE) performance of the third movement, “I thank my God upon every remembrance of you.” (Paul, writing to the early Greek Christians in Philippi, Philippians 1:3 KJV), from Timothy Mahr's Symphony No. 1.
A word from the composer - My Symphony No.1, commissioned by a consortium of 54 ensembles and premiered in 2016, is comprised of four movements. The third movement brings the listener to a welcome place – calm and unhurried, with dissonance at bay. In this turbulent, confusing world, comfort and solace can be found within the close relationships with friends and our reflections upon shared experiences. How grateful we should be for those lovely sustaining memories. An emotional wave of joy and appreciation washes over. More memories return before the movement ends in light.
Timothy Mahr is a retired Professor of Music at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota and conductor of the St. Olaf Band. He is well-known for his many published compositions, mostly for wind band.

In the composer's words:
"Gallivant: 'to go around from one place to another in the pursuit of pleasure or entertainment.'
"Bounding with energy and excitement, follow the twists and turn as Gallivant takes you on a musical adventure.
"Gallivant is a piece I have been working on for a little while, I couldn't ever settle on a title that I liked, until the word "Gallivant" fell into my lap.
"Gallivant is defined as "to go around from one place to another in the pursuit of pleasure or entertainment." I think this fits the idea, and character of my piece, as the music wanders happily from place to place varying the main theme, it arrives in the middle at a wide and vast wonder. But all good things must come to an end, and so the piece ends as the music wanders off to find the next wonderous thing.
"I hope you can all enjoy this work as much as I do, thanks to those of you who follow my work and / or give me feedback, you mean the world."

Thomas Jefferson", from Timothy Mahr's Symphony No. 1.
A word from the composer - My Symphony No.1, commissioned by a consortium of 54 ensembles and premiered in 2016, is comprised of four movements. Solos for flute and clarinet languish in a peaceful melancholy during the opening — the introspective, calm joy of a favorite pursuit. A pressing moment of realization inspires action and an energetic scherzo that derives its melodies and harmonies from the overtone scale ensues. Murky resistance and disorientation are encountered as the path forward is pursued. This is a busy music — it is about work being done. A moment of doubt creeps in, after which the determined hard work continues. A coda pushes the ending toward an agitated climax. Our work is not yet done — much more effort is needed.

Holberg Suite, or "From Holberg’s Time", was composed by Edvard Grieg in 1884 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of playwright Ludvig Holberg, considered to be a founder of Danish and Norwegian modern literature. This suite consists of five movements, modelled after old styles of dance from the 18th century: from Holberg's time.

A word from the composer - My Symphony No.1, commissioned by a consortium of 54 ensembles and premiered in 2016, is comprised of four movements. The first grew from pondering the challenge our nation and world have to come together rather than grow apart… An introduction presents fragments of the principal musical ideas to be developed throughout the work, after which a main theme is stated. It becomes one of many as it goes through manipulations and variations. Much of the music is based on an overtone scale based on the keynote of F (an overtone scale is marked by a raised 4th and lowered 7th scale degree — F-G-A-B-C-D-E flat-F). These lead to a culminating unified statement that is strong and defiant.

About the piece and its composer - This series of 10 short pieces were made as a stub for filling the absence of multi-part kazoo pieces. According to the composer, the classical world has been acting deprecatory towards new instruments. First, the clarinet, then the saxophone, and still many more are not accepted by conservative listeners. It’s time that people start to discover the beauty of new timbres, giving traditional settings and forms new entertaining context. Swunk believes himself the chosen advocate to bring instruments like the otamatone, the stroh violin, jazz harpsichord, the turkey, and, yes, the kazoo to the classical audience.
A selection from the ten pieces was chosen to be played by members of UVE.
Funky Swunk is most well-known for his tritonal rendition of Baby Shark. His more serious classical orchestral works go under his non-pseudonym Jasper Swank.

About the piece and its composer - Lili Boulanger (1893-1918) was a French impressionist composer and multitalented musician. She was a child prodigy from a well-to-do musical family, and often accompanied her older sister Nadia to music classes at the Paris Conservatoire. She found early and groundbreaking success, becoming the first female winner of the Prix de Rome’s composition contest at age 19. But as with just about anyone with such a gift, the world seemed to work against her. Lili suffered from chronic illness from a young age, and succumbed to “intestinal tuberculosis” (either extrapulmonary tuberculosis or Crohn’s disease) when she was only 24. Nadia Boulanger went on to become a legendary composition teacher, but she never forgot her little sister, and was an advocate for Lili’s work for the rest of her long and fruitful life. Written in 1917-18, mature beyond Lili’s years, and filled with rich and intense harmonies, D’un soir triste (Of a Sad Evening) was the last piece Lili was able to compose in her own hand. It was written as a companion to the much cheerier D’un matin de printemps (Of a Spring Morning), but it says so much even alone - as if the dying Boulanger put all of her grief and anguish, and the last of her strength, into this music. We say “as if,” but the writing in the manuscript becomes weaker and less legible over time, unfortunately making it a hassle to decipher and transcribe. After finishing D’un soir triste, Lili only completed one more work, by dictating it to Nadia over her last few months before passing away. Though Lili Boulanger’s life was all too brief, her music is a gift to the world of classical music, and really to the world as a whole. We hope you enjoy this piece.

Allegro di molto - UVEUntitled Virtual Ensemble2022-01-29 | The Untitled Virtual Ensemble's (UVE) performance of Symphony in E minor “Gaelic” IV. Allegro di molto written by Amy Beach.
Amy Beach (1867 - 1944) Symphony in E minor, op. 32 "Gaelic" IV. Allegro di Molto
Premiered in 1896 by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, this was the first published symphony by an American woman. Amy Beach composed this symphony after hearing Dvorak's 9th Symphony "From the New World," (1893), her own way of saying that a visiting composer couldn't single-handedly create an essential "American sound" with just a few little references. She knew that even as an American, her music would be dominated by her European influences. She embraced that in this symphony, leaning in particular on sounds of music from Ireland.
Helena Munktell (1852-1919) was a Swedish composer, pianist, and singer. Her father Henrik was wealthy and a musical character himself, and a friend of famous violinist and composer Louis Spohr, so it was only natural that young Helena should receive a top-notch musical education. She studied her craft in France, with the likes of Benjamin Godard and Vincent d’Indy; her distinctly chromatic style was a bit ahead of its time for audiences in her home country, but much better received by her French colleagues. One teacher bestowed upon her the immortal remark given to any woman composer deemed by men to be worth her salt: “[she is not] a lady who composes, but a composer.” Munktell passed away at the age of 67 in 1919; she never married or had children, but as one of the founders of the Society of Swedish Composers, she left a lasting impression on her homeland. This markedly impressionistic “poem for orchestra,” titled “Valborgsmessoeld Poem” in Swedish, was Munktell’s final orchestral work, written sometime after 1910 and published after her death. The piece depicts the celebration of Saint Walpurgis Night, which occurs on the night of April 30 into May 1 each year, and which in Sweden marks the arrival of spring. Bonfires are lit to scare away witches and evil magic (or perhaps just livestock predators), and this tradition gives us the name and theme of the work. It’s a balance of calm majesty and festive chaos, evoking everything from bubbling birdsong and gentle waves, to folk dances and the rush of flames through the grass. To help stir that wonderful imagery, the title slide features Gabrielle’s translation of a lovely little Swedish poem that either Munktell or her publisher left at the start of the score.
