"Every society had a trial and the trial of my Ummah (community) is wealth." - Prophet (PBUH), Hakkim: 4:318
Sheikh Amin Kholwadia gives spiritual and practical insights about the Islamic view on prosperity, wealth building, and life-spiritual balance.
Just as poverty is a trial so is wealth and affluence. But are you evil for having money? How much is too much? And how do you prevent it reaching your heart?
This talk was delivered at the Muslim Community Center - East Bay (MCC East Bay) in Pleasanton, California on Friday, February 24, 2017.
About the Speaker:
Shaykh Mohammed Amin Kholwadia has been called Muslim America’s greatest hidden jewel primarily owing to his deep knowledge in the Islamic tradition and aggressive engagement of and preoccupation with contemporary issues facing everyday Muslims in the West. Shaykh Amin, as he is fondly called by his students, reflects the full breadth and depth of traditional Islamic knowledge. His is a level of academic accomplishment that traces its roots to the rigor of a classical instruction in the traditional Deobandi schools of Northern India. There, he exhausted himself under the tutelage of some of the brightest minds in Muslim academia. He received his theosophical initiation and instruction from the venerated Mine of Divine Knowledge, Shaykh Mohammed Meeran, at the Sabil al-Rashad Institute in the Southern Indian city of Bangalore.
After completing his studies in the subcontinent in line with the methodologies and curricula of some of the greatest luminaries of our scholarly tradition, Shaykh Amin returned to his home in England and worked as a professional translator and book reviewer. He relocated to Chicago in 1984 and since his arrival, he has served as a Muslim scholar in various capacities and as an advisor for Muslim schools, Muslim organizations, and the Council of Religious Leaders of Greater Chicagoland. Among his well-known published works are Islamic Finance: What it is and what it could be, co-authored and published in England, and a book on Qur’anic exegesis entitled A Spark From the Dynamo of Prophethood. He is currently working on a book on Ghazalian eschatology.
Shaykh Amin’s methodical treatment of contemporary issues is unique – in-depth and comprehensive in analysis, yet concise and simple in explication and prescription. It is an approach that marks all of his discourse and exegeses. It is a process that compels professionals from various disciplines and walks of life to reassess their perception of traditional Islamic knowledge and refocus their objectives through the lens of the Sunnah. Such professionals are drawn to the person of Shaykh Amin and many among them make their way into the halls of Darul Qasim, an Islamic Institution of higher academic studies founded by the Shaykh in 2000. At Darul Qasim, Shaykh Amin presently serves as Director with a trained faculty studying under him and serving alongside him. Students of Darul Qasim come away with a first-hand understanding of what true and vetted knowledge is about. They are exposed to a sound and fresh perspective of and respect for the oral tradition, all subject to moderated debate and healthy discourse. Graduates of Darul Qasim learn early on that theirs is a never-ending journey, a realization that is counted among the provisions of one embarking on a quest for more knowledge.

Meet the first hijabi to beat President Barack Obama at a game.
The documentary that Bilqis shows in her talk can be viewed at www.mcceb.org/belqis
Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir was the highest scorer in high school basketball who led a successful fight for Muslim women to play professionally in Hijab. Her youth talk focuses on her journey rediscovering her Islamic identity after her professional career was abruptly ended because of her hijab.
Belqis spoke at the Muslim Community Center - East Bay (MCC East Bay) in Pleasanton, California on Friday, December 22, 2017.
Bilqis's talk is part of MCC's monthly family night series when we invite insightful American-Muslims who are making a positive impact on our community.
Biography of Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir:
From a young age, Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir knew she wanted basketball to be a part of her life. After first picking up a ball at the age of four at a local YMCA, Bilqis’ love for the game began. Living in a practicing Muslim household, Bilqis was to follow her religious beliefs as she grew older. She began wearing a hijab, a traditional head covering for Muslim women, and practiced modesty on the court by covering all skin except her hands.
She became a standout at New Leadership Charter School in Springfield, Mass. where she excelled on the court and in the classroom. As class valedictorian, Bilqis also set the Massachusetts state record for both boys and girls, with 3,070 points scored – breaking Connecticut and WNBA star Rebecca Lobo’s previous state record of 2,740. She was also named the state’s 2009 Gatorade Player of the Year and a McDonald’s All-American nominee.
She parlayed her skills into a full ride scholarship to the University of Memphis where she played four years (2009-13) and graduated magna cum laude with a degree in exercise science. During her freshman year at Memphis, she was invited to the White House for Ramadan feast and was acknowledged by President Barack Obama as the first Muslim woman to play covered in collegiate basketball.
In 2011, Bilqis was awarded the United States Basketball Writers Association “Most Courageous” award at the NCAA Women’s Final Four in recognition as the first Muslim woman to play covered in NCAA history.
Bilqis battled through a torn ACL during her freshman season and wrapped up her time as a Tiger in 2013. Using her extra year of NCAA eligibility, Bilqis transferred to Indiana State where she led the Sycamores to a Missouri Valley Conference title on her way to becoming the league’s Newcomer of the Year. She ranks 10th all-time in a single season for points scored (454), was also named First Team All-MVC, Second Team Scholar Athlete and earned a combined seven conference Player, Newcomer and Scholar Athlete of the Week awards.
Her goal was to continue playing professionally in Europe, but quickly ended due to the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) rule prohibiting head gear larger than five inches.
Unwilling to stray in her beliefs, Bilqis chose faith over basketball and became an advocate working alongside other Muslim players who began a Change.org petition and with Shirzanan Media and Advocacy Organization as an Athlete Ambassador. Through an op-ed published by TIME, an open letter signed by Olympic, retired and professional athletes, high-level speaking engagements and interviews with BBC Sport - and their 55 million strong audience, Bilqis raised her voice for the next generation while putting her own dream was benched. Both a full-length documentary film "Life Without Basketball" and a 14-minute activist film entitled "FIBA Allow Hijab" have been developed by Pixela Pictura to share Bilqis' story.
She has started an online campaign called “Muslim Girls Hoop Too” to raise awareness for Muslim women in sports with emphasis on female basketball players. Through her campaign, Bilqis was once again invited to the White House in March 2015 for the Muslim Leaders Meeting as one of 15 representatives that met with President Obama and his senior officials. That experience led her to an invitation to the 2015 White House Easter Egg Roll where she was able to raise awareness for physical activity under the First Lady’s “Let’s Move” campaign.
After earning her master’s degree in May 2015 at Indiana State, Bilqis sought to inspire young Muslim women through sport as an instructor and motivational speaker.
In May 2017, FIBA overturned the hijab ban. Bilqis has not decided if she will revive her dream to play professionally, but she will continue to advocate for the human right to sport.

– More talks on nutrition: mcceastbay.org/nutrition
Tahnik (تَحْنِيكِ) is an Islamic practice of rubbing the palate of a newborn baby with honey, sweet juice or pressed dates. Originally the date was softened by mastication by the father or a pious person and rubbed on the infant's palate. The Arabic word ḥanak (حنك), pl. aḥnāk (احناك), means 'palate', from which the word taḥnīk (تَحْنِيكِ) is derived.
During the lifetime of Muhammad, Muslims would bring their newborns for him to perform taḥnīk upon them.
In the collected Ḥadīth books, Sahih Muslim, by Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj, Kitab al-Adab (كتاب الآداب) "Book of Etiquette", contains the account of the origin of the ceremonial ritual performed by the newborn's mother or father:
"It is recommended to perform taḥnīk on the day of birth; to take the newborn to a righteous person or for parents to perform taḥnīk on them. It is permissible to name the newborn on the day of birth, and it is recommended to use the names 'Abdullah, Ibrahim, and the names of all other prophets, (Peace Be Upon Them)."
Anas bin Malik reports this account:
"I took 'Abdullah b. Abi Talha Ansari to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) at the time of his birth. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was at that time wearing a woollen cloak and besmearing the camels with tar. He said: Have you got with you the dates? I said: Yes. He took hold of the dates and put them in his mouth and softened them, then opened the mouth of the infant and put that in it and the child began to lick it. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: The Ansar have a liking for the dates, and he (the Holy Prophet) gave him the name of 'Abdullah."
The taḥnīk also exercises the muscles of the mouth and helps with the circulation of blood in the mouth - this may help the baby to be able to suck and take mother's milk. It is also credited to prevent neonatal hypoglycemia in newborn babies.
Certified Health Coach Ilham Malick shares practical insights on eating a healthy holistic diet in light of Sunnah (prophetic way of living), and how to maintain a healthy weight and practice preventative healthcare.

- Talks & Sermons on Salah: http://mcceastbay.org/salah
Salah (Arabic: صَلاة, plural salawat, also known as namāz (Persian: نماز) and also spelled salat, are prayers performed by Muslims. Facing the qibla, the direction of the Kaaba with respect to those praying, Muslims pray first standing and later kneeling or sitting on the ground, reciting prescribed prayers and phrases from the Quran as they bow and prostrate themselves in between. Salah is composed of prescribed repetitive cycles of bows and prostrations, called rakat (sing. rak'ah). The number of rak'ahs, also known as units of prayer, varies from prayer to prayer. Ritual purity and wudu are prerequisites for performing the prayers.
The daily obligatory prayers collectively form the second of the five pillars in Islam, observed five times every day at prescribed times. These are Fajr (observed at dawn), Zuhr (observed at noon), Asr (observed late in the afternoon), Maghrib (observed after sunset), and Isha (observed at dusk). Salah can be performed either in solitude, or collectively (known as jama'ah). When performed in jama'ah, worshippers line up in parallel rows behind a leader, known as the imam. Special prayers are exclusively performed in congregation, such as the Friday prayer and the Eid prayers, and are coupled with two sermons each, delivered by the imam.

Based on her popular 1997 parenting article "Raising Children with Deen and Dunya," Hina Khan-Mukhtar gives spiritual and practical insights road-mapping ten ingredients to raise God-conscious children in the West:
1.) Dua, Dua, Dua
2.) Suhba (companionship) will make you or break you.
3.) The Prophet (salallaahu alaihi wasallam) was a living, breathing reality in our lives.
4.) Having fun wasn’t “haraam” in our home, but we kept the home environment as pure as possible.
5.) Our parents didn’t just “talk the talk”, they “walked the walk”.
6.) I wasn’t afraid to be the Bad Guy, but I never behaved badly.
7.) I always kept them close by.
9.) Talk to your kids…with love.
8.) We didn’t spoil our kids nor did we praise them too much.
10.) They had a pious father who engaged them.

6.) لم أكن خائفًا من أن أكون الرجل السيئ ، لكني لم أتصرف بشكل سيء أبدًا.
7.) أبقيتهم بالقرب مني دائمًا.
9.) تحدث إلى أطفالك ... بحب.
