ABOUT NBC BEST PLAYS.....This show was another of the NBC Presents family of presentations from the National Broadcasting Company. Announced almost six weeks previously, NBC decided to wait until the summer of 1952 to introduce the series as a summer replacement for their Theatre Guild series. And indeed, the series was so well received that NBC extended the franchise for another season. Where this production differed was in presenting 20th-century, award-winning stage plays exclusively. With the exception of Alexandre Dumas and William Shakespeare, the series showcased most of the finest contemporary authors of the modern era many of them Pulitzer prize-winning plays selected by the New York Drama Critics' Circle as a 'Best Play' of the season.

Roger Vadim directs Metzengerstein: in which a cruel princess (Jane Fonda) is terrorised by a ghostly horse: Louis Malle helms William Wilson, about a sadistic young man (Alain Delon) who is haunted by his double, and Federico Fellini takes charge in Toby Dammit, about an alcoholic actor (Terence Stamp) who is targeted by the Devil.Vincent Price voiced two stanzas from Poe's poem Spirits of the Dead, but this was only included on the US prints of the film. The anthology premiered at Cannes on 17 May 1968, then had its French release on 10 June and its Italian release on 12 September. It headed into US cinemas on 23 July.
