About the Talk:
With some contempt for how the "mindfulness movement" has been co-opted by the psy-industries' preoccupation with becoming a better self, this presentation explores how different a hybrid of Buddhism and Psychoanalysis might sound. Starting with the Buddhist notion of non-self and following the existential thread found in both Buddhism and Psychoanalysis, it argues for a therapeutic method that resists the soteriological fantasy of "cure" and proposes that the only way we can truly "be with" our inevitable struggles is through "care."

Dr Jason Ross is a practicing psychologist with a PhD in Philosophy and Psychoanalysis from the Global Centre of Advanced Studies. He takes a critical stance towards conventional psychology and its ideas of what it means to be supposedly normal.

About the Talk:
The aim of this talk is to reconsider the notion of giving up and to explore how we often soften negativity through actions that present themselves as negative. Concepts like “surrendering” or “letting go” can dilute the harshness of giving up by implying some form of resolution or outcome. However, giving up, as Rivera sees it, is a more severe form of negativity that acknowledges the persistent nature of loss and suffering. It offers a way to confront the impossibility of change or improvement in certain circumstances, highlighting a form of presence that only giving up can provide.

Summary: This presentation discusses the works of Spielrein, Brison and Malabou and outlines their argument that destruction is a creative force. And that traumatic events could be seen as creative as they create a new narrative self where the old was destroyed.

The second part of this presentation is grappling with the 'negative' part of negative psychoanalysis. Derrida put forward the idea of the "Aporia", (where Socrates debates his opponent into a state of puzzlement) being the true place of philosophy, and that Plato or Socrates' putting forward their solution is to save themselves from the anxiety caused by allowing the Other to breathe.

Ainsley Rucker: Broken Promises and Academic Disillusionment

Summary: Across all fields of academia, a sense of disillusionment is spreading. Epistemic violence is manifesting within academia, resulting in broader injustices and exclusion of certain philosophies and entire voices from the philosophical canon. By invalidating these philosophies and writing them off as being experiences instead of valid forms of philosophical investigation, the field of negative philosophy comes into light, attempting to deconstruct the existing injustices within philosophy while simultaneously taking part in it. This recognition of incompleteness and contradiction of how we define "good" philosophy with the negative philosophy we practice thus fuels the self-perpetuating cycle of academic disillusionment.

Kafele Tudor-Rosa: A Psychoanalytic Argument for the Integration of Pessimism

Summary: This academic work delves into the concept of pessimism, contending that it serves as an essential lens for critical observation of the natural world.

Despite its significance, this lens has encountered marginalization in both psychological and mainstream narratives, it has become a subject of splitting and is being dangerously submerged into abjection.

Considering the thinking of Speilrein, Freud, and Klein I use a psychoanalytic framework to think about the resistance’s pessimism evokes in us. Ultimately pointing to Nietzsche’s “pessimism of strength” as a justification for overcoming said resistances.

“Every genuine philosophy every true religion is wrapped in the earthly garment of pessimism as the only accurate mode of reviewing the world befitting man in the awareness of his nothingness” (Jung, 1898)

The course will consist of three theoretical sessions (Zoom and Facebook Livestream) and one practical session (Zoom), the intention of which is to form a community and a network of 'dead-inside' people who refuse to be brought together based on a positive bias.

Julie Reshe 2022-06-05 | This course will embrace the position of depressive realism. In this regard, it will oppose the generally accepted psychology of our time, which proceeds from the fact that depression and melancholia are foreign states for humans and that they can be ultimately healed.
What if they are not foreign but genuinely human and therefore incurable? The course will be practically oriented, it will introduce the perspective of depressive realism and explore realistic options:
▪️ how to live on if you are dead inside,
▪️ how to live with others who are also dead inside,
▪️ how to live in the cruel reality of the world that doesn’t care about you.
It will be of interest to those who want to learn more about depressive realism, those who are seeking a 'self-help' alternative, and/or those who have already given up and who don't seek anything anymore.
The course will consist of three theoretical sessions (Zoom and Facebook Livestream) and one practical session (Zoom), the intention of which is to form a community and a network of 'dead-inside' people who refuse to be brought together based on a positive bias.

"This course is a journey to the past of psychoanalysis and its possible future. The course will discuss “the death of psychoanalysis” — the critique of psychoanalysis from the feminist, critical thought, and scientific perspectives.
