Doc VII“It Felt So Good, When I Stopped Feeling Bad” is an original song I wrote on July 14th, 2025, the morning after my wife and I had a conversation about our lives together. I casually said “it felt so good when I stopped feeling bad” referring to various aspects of my past before we met. After I said it, I said “Honey, remind me to write this down it would make a great song title”. She immediately wrote those words down for me (knowing I’d forget the words). I wrote the song in 15 minutes and let it sit for a few days while I worked out the tune. I hope you enjoy it. So, is this song about: a. Relationships b. Addictions c. Employment d. Life choices e. All of the above f. Some of the above g. None of the above
You decide. I wrote it for all of us. Lyrics below...

It felt so good when I started, and felt so bad when I stopped, like standing naked in the freezing rain, while all my bubbles popped. It was so good in the beginning, but then the trail started to fade. I stifled the screaming inside my head, because I was too afraid
I was too afraid to change it. But the spinning drove me mad. Then it dawned on me that it felt so good. not to feel so bad. Oh yes dear lord, it felt so good, when I stopped feeling bad.
The journey had its ups and downs and knocked me down a hundred times. I had to get back on my feet or I would lose my mind. At times the dark was blinding, while I sought out the light. I refused to throw in the towel, so I stayed in the fight
I was too afraid to change it. But the spinning drove me mad. Then it dawned on me that it felt so good. not to feel so bad. Oh yes dear lord, it felt so good, when I stopped feeling bad.
I found my way back to long ago, before the bad choices I made. The path led me to serenity; I was no longer afraid. Not afraid to try again, not afraid that I might fall. And though I was a broken man, I was ready to risk it all.
I was too afraid to change it. But the spinning drove me mad. Then it dawned on me that it felt so good. not to feel so bad. Oh yes dear lord, it felt so good, when I stopped feeling bad. Oh yes dear lord, it felt so good, when I stopped, feeling bad.

Lost in the noise, lost in the lost. Can’t take the risk, can’t bear the cost. Afraid of the warmth, afraid of the frost, too many lines been already crossed.
Don’t bother trying to silence the screams. There’s no place to hide, from the dreams that you dream. Accept that it’s seldom as real as it seems, words that are spoken can mean different things.
The drummers aren’t beating the same old drums. The singers don’t sing the same songs. The music they play lulls us in till we’re numb. And hate has replaced getting along.
Lost in the lost, lost in the noise. Was it sincere, or was it a ploy? Was it meant to support or meant to destroy? Did you believe that you had a choice?
The drummers aren’t beating the same old drums. The singers don’t sing the same songs. The music they play lulls us in till we’re numb. And hate has replaced getting along.
The noise grows louder with each passing day. So many are lost and can’t find their way. The screaming obscures what they’re trying to say, it doesn’t seem to matter much, anyway. Any way.
I sing all the lead and harmony voices as well as play each instrument. My songs include covers, live video, or one picture shots, and original songs.

I wrote this song in August 2025 at the request of a very dear friend who had lost her husband John and wanted something special for his Celebration of Life ceremony today, September 21, 2025. I didn’t’ know him as well as I knew her (we were work friends until both of us retired). By the time I was able to meet John, his health was deteriorating (due to a previous medical calamity) and then further complicated by Alzheimer’s. I asked my friend to share with me those things she loved about her late husband. A few are contained in this song. But one of her most enduring memories of her husband is whenever she went out, he’d always lovingly say “I’ll keep the light on”. My friend provided love and medical care for her husband and never left his side for many years. I dedicate this song to her, Sally, my friend for her undying devotion and love she had and remains to have for her soul mate John. Pictured is her beloved husband John, 1942-2025.
“I’ll Keep the Light On” A song for John.
When she was asked “what made him special”? What made her know he was the one, when did she know he was her forever? He was her stars, her moon, and her sun.
The room lit up each time he entered. He found the best to be found in everyone. He always had a loving smile to offer, that’s how she knew, he was the one.
They chose to live their lives together. They had their laughter, their tears, and their fun. They keep no secrets from each other, That’s how she knew, he was the one.
Their wedding vows held purpose, trust, and promise. He would love her until all his days were done. He told her he’d always keep the light on. That’s how she knew he was the one.
When it’s time, she knows he’ll be waiting. Her dear, sweet, wonderful, John. She’ll find her way back to his loving embrace As promised, he kept the light on. That’s how she knew, that’s how she felt, he was her one.

The song appeared on Mr. Young’s fourth album “Harvest”. The song is the only Neil Young song to reach # 1 in the United States. The backup singers for his recording were James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt. And no, they didn’t offer to sing back up for my cover. That would have been nice...a guy can dream right?

The original melody is from the 1913 Peruvian zarzuela (musical play). The Spanish title translates to “The Condor Passes” or “The Condor Flies By”. The melody has over 4000 versions along with 300 sets of lyrics. The Englich lyrics I’m using are from a song of the same name written by Paul Simon and performed by Simon and Garfunkel on their 1970 album “Bridge Over Troubled Water”. In 2004, Peru declared this song to be a part of its national cultural heritage and is now considered the second national anthem of Peru.

I wrote the song’s lyrics after watching a little garden windmill in my backyard. The melody of the song found its way to me in part from listening to the windchimes hanging on my back porch. The plant waving somewhat in sync with the song is called a “Pink Flamingo Celosia” enjoying life in the beautiful garden lovingly created by my wife.
Where the Winds Take You
Wherever it takes you, your calm winds of time. Whenever it leaves you, alone in your mind. Whomever shall find you, do not run away, welcome the winds, gently blowing your way.
Be it the sunshine, or an overcast sky, a walk through a forest, with no one nearby. A stroll on the beach, as your feet tamp the sand, or on a front porch swing holding her hand.
Do not be afraid, to feel the sweet feel, welcome her truth, so the feel can be real. Welcome the wind, that whispers her love, wink back at the twinkling, stars up above.
Wherever it takes you, your calm winds of time, whenever it leaves you, alone in your mind. Whomever shall find you, do not run away, welcome the winds, gently blowing your way.
Your eyes will tell him what’s lies in your heart, his love will keep growing, as your fears depart. Together in love, when the feeling is right, walk hand in hand, into the night.
Wherever it takes you, your calm winds of time, whenever it leaves you, alone in your mind. Whomever shall find you, do not run away, welcome the winds, gently blowing your way. Your way...

The song was recorded on January 31, 1969, by the Beatles, and released on May 8, 1970. The song was the first song on the Beatles album “Let it Be”. The pictures I used for this slideshow appear in chronological order of their occurrence of my wife and I from the beginning of our lives together right up to a few months ago. Loved her then, love her still, and this I know, I always will. We're looking forward to our next adventure, perhaps the United Kingdom? Stay tuned...

While I was at the same antique fair where I found the “Elton” glasses, I found this headless doll on display with other items ushering in the Halloween season. I took a picture of her and then worked on the pic until it was just right. I literally had zero idea what song she would inspire me to compose. Thus, surrendering to the creative process, this song was born. No doubt what’s been on my mind of late...
As for the content of the lyrics, it won’t take a psychologist or a mysterious doll to understand what I’ve written and why I wrote it. I hope you enjoy it.
The song lyrics and responses are contained below.
“We’ve Lost Our Heads”
Now you see it, (do you, do you really see it?) and now you don’t. (I didn’t think so) You said you would, (you did, you really did) now you say you won’t. (surprise, surprise!) The world’s gone crazy, (go home there’s nothing to see here) we’re no longer afloat. (we’re under the Titanic) Our minds are foggy (and that’s not the only thing) from too much dope.
We’ve lost our heads, (we’ve blown our minds) our eyes turned black, (we choose not to see) our mental health (what’s left of it) is under attack. (from every direction imaginable) The world’s gone somewhere, (the world I knew is gone) and I want it back, (I want the good parts back) the screamers are screaming (loud and clear) that “the world is flat”. (oh my God people, get real!)
Yes, means no, (yes should mean yes) and no means yes. (no should mean no, and NOT maybe) What’s true these days, (I can’t believe anything is anymore) is anyone’s guess. (why would we even try to figure it out?) Still judged by our color, (it seems like now more than ever) or the way that we dress, (what color is your uniform?) and nobody’s trying to fix this mess.
What seems real (it certainly isn’t a reality show) is probably fake. (is anything real anymore?) The nightmare remains (24/7) even when we’re awake. (probably because we’re “woke”) The doubt and the fear (insistently ongoing) is too much to take. (more than anybody should have to bear) The witches are laughing, (witches’ laughter) as they burn on the stake.
No time to rise, (there’s that glass ceiling) no place to fall. (you can’t fall off the floor) Our deafness blocks (I can’t hear a word) the reapers call. (growling) There is no us, (I wonder if there ever was) no “one for all”. (it was a catchy slogan) The “all for one”, (I don’t think it ever was) has been recalled. We shall overcome, we shall overcome!
I sing all the lead and harmony voices as well as play each instrument. My songs include covers, live video or one picture shots, and original songs.

The song was recorded and released on May 24th, 1974. The song was also recorded live as a duet by Elton John and George Michael reaching number one in the UK in 1991, and in the US in 1992. As for the pic...I saw these glasses on August 14th, 2025, at an antique fair, and knowing I was going to release this cover a few days later, I channeled my inner Elton for the cover pic because it just seemed like the right thing to do. I hope you enjoy the song and the picture.

The first image of the glass that appears in this video was taken during breakfast at a little café in Pacific Grove the day before. The image of the glass is reflected in a mirror next to a window where I was sitting. The image captivated my imagination and inspired the first verse of “Just an Image”. The verse that followed was unintentional and found its life through the creative process. I sincerely hope you enjoy the song, as well as the slide show I created to support the song.
“Just an Image”
It’s just an image, of imagination, a moment of creation, to imagine. It was a memory. Perhaps an old reality. And doubtful of its certainty, I felt it was a part of me. It was just a thought. That fled but it got caught. It wasn’t hard to find, It was hiding in my mind.
The room was cold and still. There was dust upon the windowsill. I said I wouldn’t, but I know I will, I’ll keep on hurtin till I’ve had my fill. I sat alone until the evening came. And with the darkness came a pouring rain. The raindrops beat upon the window pain, there was no reason to remain. The painful tug when I walked out the door. The rain blew in upon the wooden floor. The thought of nothing left but wanting more, and wondering why it was, and what was it for?
It’s just an image, of imagination, a moment of creation, to imagine.
I sing all the lead and harmony voices as well as play each instrument. My songs include covers, live video or one picture shots, and original songs.

The song was recorded and released by the Beatles on August 6th, 1965, soon-to-be sixty years ago. In 1965 I was 13 years old, and about to acquire my first guitar. When the song came out, I wasn’t much of a Beatle fan, so I paid very little attention to it. The lyrics didn’t make any sense to me at that young and tender age, especially to a kid grooving to the music of the Beach Boys. Fast forward 60 years, (and yes, those years have flown by) and I find myself at age 73, appreciating the gift of these lyrics very deep within my soul. I’ve no idea what prompted John or Paul to write these words, but I’m so very thankful they did. It’s reported that John Lennon wanted to record a slower version of this song but needed a song that would be commercially more successful and support the movie the Beatles produced by the same name. I’d like to think my cover would please him. “And now my life has changed in oh so many ways...”

The picture I chose for this song of my wife and I was taken 10 years ago and captured our true love and excitement for each which hasn’t grown old, just more exciting and wonderful. It is truly sweet to be loved by her!

The song was recorded and released in 1968 by the rock band “Cream”. The band’s members were Jack Bruce on bass, Eric Clapton on guitar, and Ginger Baker on drums. For this song, I used several instrumental layers including two bass tracks, three guitar tracks and multiple percussion tracks. As Monty Python would say, “And now for something completely different...” It was a fun project to record

This song was made popular by Louis Armstrong in 1929. The song entered the public domain in the United States in 2024.
I chose to do a slide show of dogs (mostly smiling) to illustrate my cover because in my opinion, nothing says “I LOVE YOU” more sincerely than the loving smile of a dog. A great number of the dogs pictured in this slide show are rescue dogs, and their warm smiles and loving eyes shout their appreciation in finding loving forever homes.
If you like this video, please consider supporting your local animal rescue agency. Your support will help provide wonderful homes for these loving animals.
A deep and heartfelt thanks goes out for all of you who provided these awesome pictures!

Both songs in this medley were written by Gordon Lightfoot. “For Lovin’ Me” was released in 1966 and “Did She Mention My Name was released in 1968. Mr. Lightfoot often sang both songs as a medley when performing live. I find it interesting that Mr. Lightfoot wrote a song about a “love them and leave them” type scoundrel and then coupled it in a medley about a man longing for a lost love back home.

It was published a few years later by Francis Brothers and Day in London in 1884.
The song tells a tale of a fishwife who sold her goods on the streets of Dublin during the 1700’s and died at a young age of “fever”. There is no evidence that Molly Malone was an actual person, though according to Wikipedia, the song has become Dublin’s unofficial anthem.

The song was recorded and released in 1969 by Fogerty’s group Creedence Clearwater Revival. The lyrics of this song speak so much more to me today in 2025, than they possibly could 1969, when I had no life experience to put them into perspective.
There have been two times in my life that were plagued with a foreboding sense of an unpleasant, perhaps horrific future. The first time was in 1970 when my I received “88” as my draft number for the Viet Nam War. I quickly joined the United States Air Force reasoning that four years in the USAF would be safer than two years in the Army. And though it was a wonderful decision for me in the long run, not a day went by during those four years of active duty that I felt totally free of worry of being transferred as a medic to a combat assignment. That experience however difficult to manage was self-centered in nature, concerned only for my immediate well-being, my future, and yes, my life.
I am now experiencing the second coming of that foreboding sense of doom, darkness and destruction. This time however it isn’t my demise that worries me. At 73, I’ve lived my life, and whatever years remain will be as they shall be. My fears are for my family, my daughters, my five grandchildren, the thousands of students I’ve spent 45 years serving, my friends, and my country. Fortunately, I have my faith, I have my family, and I have my friends. I will not retreat from my values and beliefs, I will not yield to the insanity, and I will not become part of the problem by doing nothing.
I will give freely the gifts I’ve been given to support and strengthen those I encounter that need me. I feel a bad moon rising, but I will not fear it because I believe that each bad moon is followed by a brighter day.

Pictured are some evening lights and buildings in Old Monterey. Not exactly the Pyramids, or Algiers, but it struck a chord as it gives me a feeling of lonely travel and being away from home.

Mr. Young first released this song in 1969 on his “Everybody Knows This is Nowhere” album with his band “Crazy Horse”. Mr. Young became an on and off member of the super group “Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young”. I first heard “Cowgirl in the Sand” on Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young’s 1971 album “Four Way Street”.
I have strong memories of listening to this song while lying alone in the dark on the bottom bunk of a military bunk bed while serving in England in 1971. I could only listen to the song when my roommate (the top bunker) was on duty at the hospital we both worked at because I didn’t own headphones. (Too expensive back then)

Pictured is my dear friend Paul Martin who just celebrated his 58th birthday. Paul was a poster boy for the “March of Dimes” when he was 9-11 years old. Paul was born with cerebral palsy. If you were a student in the Elk Grove Unified School District in Northern California. Paul was a wrestling and football coach during the1993-2005 school years.
For those of you who know him, you know Paul to be a spirited, kind, and very positive man. Paul requested this song for me to sing. Paul has brought happiness to countless children through his “Can-Do” attitude despite the many demanding obstacles he encounters daily. And in spite of those challenges, Paul feels he has a life that’s good.
Perhaps we should be more like Paul...

I dedicate my cover of this song to my “Second Mother” Mary Sweigert Mastalski who peacefully passed away last month. I first met Mary prior to my entering the service somewhere around 1967. I was close friends with a few of her several sons. Despite having a rather “full house” of her own and her husband’s children, Mary had room in her loving heart for one more mischievous teenager hanging around the house. Mary’s home was a place of love. I was honored to sing this song today for her funeral. Mary would have turned 97 later this month. Mary, may our glorious Lord bless and keep you until we meet again.

For this song I chose my favorite picture of my wife taken soon after we first started dating. In this picture she’s cuddling with her beloved Great Dane “Izzy” who may have wanted to eat me the first time I knocked on her door. It was abundantly clear that Izzy loved her “Mommy” with all of her huge doggy heart, and the feelings were absolutely mutual.

The song appeared on their final studio album “Bridge Over Troubled Water”.
Paul Simon wrote the song as a thinly veiled message to Art Garfunkel, referencing in the first stanza a specific incident where Garfunkel went to Mexico to act in the film Catch-22. Simon was left alone in New York writing songs for Bridge over Troubled Water, hence the very lonely feelings of "The Only Living Boy in New York." Simon refers to Garfunkel in the song as "Tom", alluding to their early days when they were called Tom and Jerry, and encourages him to "let your honesty shine . . . like it shines on me".*

This song has been covered by numerous artists including John Fogerty, Johnny Cash, John Denver, The Everly Brothers, Jimmy Buffett, Dwight Yoakam, and Tom T. Hall.
John Prine asks in the final verse of this song:
“When I die, let my ashes float down the Green River, let my soul roll on up to the Rochester Dam”.
His wish was fulfilled after his death in 2020. In 2022, the “Rochester Dam” was dedicated to John Prine.
As for the pic, this is not the Green River. It's the American River in Sacramento, upstream to what has been known to local teens as "Paradis Beach" for as long as I can remember. Many a good time was had at Paradise Beach... (just saying).

The song was made famous in 1942 in the United Kingdom by Vera Lynn. American singer Kate Smith also charted at # 10 in February of 1942. The song has been covered by “The Glenn Miller Orchestra,” “Jimmy Dorsey,” “Bing Crosby”, and several singers and bands of the era.
Pictured is my late Uncle Eddie Neves, my father’s brother, and the only member of my family who served in Germany during WWII. My uncle was a gentle loving man, and I dedicate this song to his memory.
On a more trivial note, the guitar I played for this song is a Gibson L-50 archtop, also made in 1942. I can’t help but wonder if this (new-to-me”) old beautiful guitar has played this song many times before I was even born!
