Luckily, we always brought a color video camera to these events to capture all the fun.....and the people!! We all brought some Betamax machines (and some of the guys even brought U-Matics and VHS machines), tons of blank tape, and our latest movies to dub! Those dubbing sessions usually went until the wee hours of the morning! And some of these guys, unfortunately, have passed on.

Francis Gary Powers was the U-2 pilot that was shot down over Russia and captured in 1960. He was released and exchanged in 1962 for a captured Soviet KGB leader.

Two of the First Cleveland Beta-Philes on Camera - from May, 1977!!! videoholic50s60s70s 2015-12-21 | Recorded at Higbee's at Severance Center, in May of 1977 (yep, 1977 - many of you probably weren't born yet!), here are myself and fellow videophile Gary Herman on camera! At that time both of us were heavily involved in video trading and dubbing, and we thought it would be cool to do intros to put at the beginning and end of tapes that sent to other people! This was recorded on a Sony LV-1901 Betamax console, with that old b/w Sony video camera that was sold as an accessory, and needed a LOT of light! The original video was very dark so I brightened it up in my video editing program. Enjoy the nostalgia!!!

Meeting Art Vuolo for the very first time - May, 1978!! videoholic50s60s70s 2014-08-13 | Taped at my old apartment in Chagrin Blvd. in Woodmere, Ohio, here is a rough black and white camera video of the very first time I met Detroit radio icon Art Vuolo, when he came to visit me on May 22, 1978! The other guys in attendance comprised the "VCO", the Video Collectors of Ohio, a loose-knit group of videophiles that were all good friends and traded and dubbed tapes. We actually had 9 Betamaxes on my floor, all inter-connected and dubbing tapes!! This is one of the few videos that was shot in my apartment, before I moved in 1979.
The Beginnings of McKeesports WIXZ1360 - With A Robot Disc Jockey - Feb. 27, 1969! videoholic50s60s70s 2014-03-12 | When McKeesport PA's WMCK (1360 AM) changed formats and call letters to WIXZ in Feb. of 1969, this is what listeners heard! "I am Segue, your computerized disc jockey," droned a robotic voice. "This is the new 'Wick-zee' 1360, WIXZ McKeesport. You are listening to the sound of automated radio. I am the world's only perfect radio announcer ... I have no moving parts. I can never make a mistake. I have taken over your radio dial at 1360." And on came "Papa Oom Mow Mow" by The Rivingtons. Hour after hour, it continued. "Segue the Computer" would announce a "super oldie" by Pat Boone or The Beatles, and invariably play "Papa Oom Mow Mow" instead. For your sanity, I have cut out every playing of "Papa Oom Mow Mow" and just went on with whatever the robot said next! WIXZ's original line-up included George Brewer from 6 - 9 am, Jerry Butler from 9 am - 4pm, 'Wild Child' Dick Kemp from 4 - 9 pm, Terry Lee from 9 pm - 1 am, and Bobby Harper from 1 - 6 am.
