George's "Long, Long, Long" sits right between Helter Skelter and Revolution 1, serving The White Album as a calming moment between two heavier tracks. George wrote the track as an ode to God, with its music inspired by none other than Bob Dylan.
"The "you" in ‘Long, Long, Long’ is God. I can’t recall much about it except the chords, which I think were coming from "Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands" – D to E minor, A, and D – those three chords and the way they moved."
The track was written around August 1968, but was only brought in the studio in some of the last recording sessions for the album on October 7th and 8th, under the working title of "It's Been A Long Long Long Time". This session was not only marked by John's absence (which became somewhat of a pattern when it came to sessions for George's songs), but also by the sessions being heavily photographed : every picture featured in this video is of them rehearsing and recording the track.
The band recorded a total of 67 takes of the track, since it was most certainly Paul and Ringo's first time hearing it as no demo exists. The backing track lineup featured Paul on organ, Ringo on drums and George on acoustic guitar (with a capo on the third fret) and vocals. According to session tapes, Paul and George were in a particularly good mood, joking around and working in a very cooperative way ; a striking contrast from the infamous argument that sparked in the Get Back sessions a few months later.
The track remained bare through its arrangement, but one of its most interesting part is the ending. Here's Chris Thomas, who added a small piano part to the track, on the chaotic ending :
"There’s a sound near the end of the song which is a bottle of Blue Nun wine rattling away on top of a Leslie speaker cabinet. It just happened. Paul hit a certain note and the bottle started vibrating. We thought it was so good that we set the mikes up and did it again. The Beatles always took advantage of accidents."
The band chose the final take, take 67, as best and continued working on the song on October 8th. John was present at this session but didn't want to bring any contributions to the track, but rather focus on two of his own compositions that were recorded the same day, those being I'm So Tired and Bungalow Bill. George added some more acoustic guitar, vocals and Paul a bass part on his recently acquired Jazz Bass. They finished the track on October 9th, Chris Thomas adding a small but prominent piano part and Paul some sporadic backing vocals.

Helter Skelter was Paul's attempt to create "the raunchiest, loudest, most ridiculous rock ‘n’ roll record you’ve ever heard." Paul came up with the idea after reading about Pete Townshend talking about The Who's single "I Can See For Miles". Paul then told the other three Beatles they should do something along those lines, and wrote Helter Skelter.
"I sat down and wrote 'Helter Skelter' to be the most raucous vocal, the loudest drums, etcetera etcetera. I was using the symbol of a helter skelter as a ride from the top to the bottom – the rise and fall of the Roman Empire – and this was the fall, the demise, the going down.”
The band first tried out Helter Skelter on July 18th as a jam. They recorded 3 takes that day, all very long, with the final take lasting 27 minutes (the longest recording that the band ever did). The full 2nd take was released in 2018 on the deluxe White Album boxset : youtube.com/watch?v=QoK3HyIL0eo . The 3rd 27 minutes take has yet to be heard or bootlegged.
These jams were eventually discarded by the band and they returned to the song on the 9th of September, with Paul and George on guitars, Ringo on drums and John on the newly acquired Bass VI. The band did 18 takes under the production of Chris Thomas, his first day as a producer instead of George Martin who was on vacation. Brian Gibson, EMI engineer, recalls the band being "out of control" that day.
"They were completely out of their heads that night. But, as usual, a blind eye was turned to what The Beatles did in the studio. Everyone knew what substances they were taking but they were really a law unto themselves in the studio. As long as they didn’t do anything too outrageous things were tolerated."
Here's Paul on the track :
"We got the engineers and George Martin to hike up the drum sound and really get it as loud and horrible as it could and we played it and said, ‘No, still sounds too safe, it’s got to get louder and dirtier.’ We tried everything we could to dirty it up and in the end you can hear Ringo say, ‘I’ve got blisters on my fingers!’ That wasn’t a joke put-on: his hands were actually bleeding at the end of the take, he’d been drumming so ferociously. We did work very hard on that track."
The track also featured a very badly played saxophone by John along with very rudimentary trumpet playing by Mal Evans. In the end, Paul often talks in high regard of the track, surely deserving its title of a precursor to heavy metal.
