Preserving Black History in America: Historic Images from the JPC Archive The Getty 2023-06-01 | For over 75 years, the Johnson Publishing Company produced iconic magazines including Ebony and Jet and its archive is regarded as one of the most comprehensive records of 20th century Black culture. The collection consists of over 4 million historical photographs, magazines, and video and audio recordings of the Black experience in America, from the civil rights movement to the rise of African American entertainers and athletes. Indigenous Artist Exposes Cultural Erasure The Getty 2022-08-22 | I AM DENILSONDenilson Baniwa, an artist and member of the Baniwa Indigenous group from the state of Amazonas in Brazil, uses his art to expose how colonial representations have erased the culture and denied the humanity of Indigenous Americans. For the exhibition Reinventing the Américas, Baniwa collaborated with the Getty Research Institute to generate video artworks, installations, and interventions on historical objects. His contemporary interventions prompt us to see other sides to these representations. Baniwa says, "When I'm faced with a colonial narrative, I'm provoked to find in it what's invisible to most people." This video is part of the exhibition Reinventing the Américas: Construct. Erase. The Stolen de Kooning: Recovery and Redemption The Getty 2022-06-08 | Cut from its frame, ripped from its backing, rolled up, and stolen from a museum in Arizona, Willem de Kooning's Woman-Ochre has been through a lot.When the painting was discovered in an antique store in Silver City, New Mexico 30 years later, it needed extensive repairs.In 2017 conservators at Getty got to work mending the torn canvas, and painstakingly restoring the composition.Getty is a world-renowned cultural and philanthropic organization that shares and advances the world’s visual art and cultural heritage.
