Ventura: Man hoisted to safety from fast moving river after heavy rainfall Thursday morning. RMG News 2023-01-06 | At 9:37am on Thursday morning, January 5 of 2023, resources that included the Ventura County Sheriff's Department, Fire, Gold Coast paramedics, and urban search and rescue were dispatched to a reported swift water rescue taking place in Ventura. The location was the river bottom off the 33 Highway south of Stanley Avenue. Arriving authorities confirmed finding a man hanging onto bamboo in the middle of the flowing water. Copter 5 from the Air Unit was also dispatched for a hoist operation. By 10:13am, the rescue was completed with the man having been extricated from the river. Daylight uncovers the utter devastation that has been left behind by the Mill Fire that started yesterday afternoon. At least 100 homes destroyed. CAPTION: A brutal wildfire in rural Northern California ripped through a neighborhood and destroyed about 100 homes and other buildings, fire officials said Saturday after at least two people were injured and thousands were forced from their homes. The Mill Fire started shortly before 1 p.m. Friday just north of Weed, a city of about 2,600 people. The flames raced into the Lincoln Heights neighborhood where a significant number of homes burned and residents had to flee for their lives. Weather conditions improved overnight and firefighters were able to get 20% containment but another blaze, the Mountain Fire, that broke out Friday northwest of Weed grew substantially. Deputies, officers, and firefighters were called to the area regarding a major collision. One 911 caller stated a car flew off the freeway down the embankment and onto Spruce Street. One man who was reportedly severely injured exited the vehicle and fled the scene on foot, prompting deputies to search the nearby neighborhood. At least one other male was found still in the car, unconscious. Fire paramedics transported the unconscious person to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Sheriff's deputies were conducting traffic control for a minor injury traffic collision that had occurred previously at 7:54pm. Ventura County Sheriff's Department deputies were wrapping up the tows. A Sheriff's unit was positioned for traffic control with lights activated and a cone pattern set up when the second collision had occurred. The driver had reportedly not seen the Sheriff's unit prior to hitting it. Additional resources from the Ventura County Sheriff's Department, Ventura County Fire Department and AMR responded. The Oxnard Fire and Police Departments, along with Gold Coast paramedics, were dispatched. A small inbound aircraft heading towards the report was reported to have experienced a complete loss of power. The aircraft came down and crashed on south bound Ventura Road north of 5th Street. The aircraft hit a fence by the entrance to the airport and began to leak fuel. The pilot made it out of the aircraft and experienced minor only injuries, according to initial assessments. The pilot was being transported by Gold Coast to the hospital. No one else was on board the aircraft. Oxnard PD was shutting down the entirety of Ventura Road between 2nd and 5th Streets.
