Lord of the Dance | North American Brass Band Summer School | Halifax NS 2022 Dave Childs 2022-07-15 | The North American Brass Band Summer School (NABBSS) was co-founded in 2014 by David Childs, Robert Childs and Craig Roberts – former Assistant Director of the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo. Based on the highly successful summer school models well established in the United Kingdom, NABBSS takes place in the dynamic waterfront city of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada – a city bestowed with the distinction of being named in the top-ten tourist destinations ‘on the rise’ globally.However, unlike any other summer school, NABBSS participants have the opportunity to be part of the cast of The Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo - the World’s largest indoor annual show, presented to over 50,000 people and an international television audience, featuring artists of the highest calibre from a variety of nations.This recording is from NABBSS' Canada Day Festival concert held at St. Matthew's Church, Halifax, but also includes images and video from a variety of other other performances from the course, including the RNSIT. The work came to prominence as a euphonium solo through Simone Mantia, who regularly performed his own arrangement as featured soloist with the John Philip Sousa Band during the early 20th century.

As you'd expect, the music is Irish in nature, featuring an atmospheric introduction, ornamented reel, lyrical melody and a high-spirited jig. 'Neath the Dublin Skies can be heard in its original euphonium and brass band setting on Celtic Charm (DOYCD214), once again performed by David and Cory.

It begins very still, becoming more intense, before dying away with one simple note, giving the piece its title.Hannah is a graduate of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Wales, where she also played Solo Horn with the Tredegar Town Band. In addition to composition, she has a keen interest in media and has worked with several magazines and broadcasters including the BBC. In 2012 she was asked by the Radio 3’s flagship Arts programme ‘Music Matters’ to record a personal blog to help listeners understand how a young music student juggles study, student life and playing in a top class band.
CYPHER David Childs performs Kevin Days euphonium solo with electronics Dave Childs 2021-05-31 | American composer Kevin Day (b. 1996) has quickly emerged as one of the leading young voices in the world of music composition today. Day was born in Charleston, West Virginia and is a native of Arlington, Texas. His father was a prominent hip-hop producer in the late-1980s in Southern California, and his mother was a sought-after gospel singer from West Virginia, singing alongside the likes of Mel Torme and Kirk Franklin. Cypher was composed for Blake Birmingham, a former student of David Childs, and received its première during Blake's University of North Texas Masters recital in April 2021.

David Childs & Philharmonie Baden-Baden with ADAGIO & RONDO Dave Childs 2021-05-12 | Under the baton of Manfred Obrecht, David Childs performs Mozart with the Baden-Baden Philharmonic Orchestra. Mozart's little- known adagio, K580a, existed previously as a fragment scored for solo clarinet and three basset horns and was completed by Professor Philip Wilby. The completed version of the adagio is in sonata form, its main theme closely resembling Mozart's famous motet Ave verum corpus, and in this arrangement by Dr. Robert Childs, it is followed by one of Mozart's best-loved and most performed pieces - the lively 'Rondo Alla Turca' from the Piano Sonata in A minor, K331, written in Paris in 1778.

The piece leads to an “all’s well” Hallelujah wind-up finale.The work was commissioned by a consortium led by American euphonium soloist, Adam Frey. David Childs, together with Euphonium Foundation UK, joined the consortium and gave the British première of 'Tent Meeting Revival' with the Central Band of the Royal Air Force, directed by Wing Commander Duncan Stubbs OBE. Gordon Jacobs Fantasia performed by euphonium soloist David Childs Dave Childs 2019-09-15 | Gordon Jacob composed his Fantasia for Euphonium and Concert Band in 1969. It received its première in May that year, performed by Michael Mamminga and a freelance Wind Band in London conducted by Denis Wick. American euphonium player Michael Mamminga commissioned Gordon Jacob to write the work during a year studying abroad in the UK on a fulbright scholarship following the completion of his Masters Degree from the University of North Texas. Some mistakes were made during the publication of the work, most notably corrected wrong notes in the cadenza. Here David Childs plays the solo part as it was performed in the première, together with pianist Michael Schneider. This video also contains images of the instrument (and mute) that Michael Mamminga used in the première - a Boosey & Hawkes Besson Imperial manufactured at Edgware Road, London.
