The factory, which operates openly, is reportedly slaughtering over 600 whale sharks annually to produce shark oil for health supplements. Revelations about shark-processing at the factory, located in Pu Qi township, near Wenzhou, follow a four-year investigation by the Hong Kong-based conservation NGO, WildLifeRisk.
In a joint-statement released today, Alex Hofford and Paul Hilton of WildLifeRisk said: "We went to Pu Qi three times in the last three years, and on each occasion the scale of the slaughter was truly staggering. "How these harmless creatures, these gentle giants of the deep, can be slaughtered on such an industrial scale is beyond belief. It's even more incredible that this carnage is all for the sake of non-essential lifestyle props such as lipsticks, face creams, health supplements and shark fin soup. We are calling on China's regulatory authorities to enforce the international agreements on this illegal activity now, before these animals are brought closer to extinction." According to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), to which China is a signatory, the international sale of products from an endangered species is illegal and the trade is unsustainable.
However, the WildLifeRisk investigation found that countless basking sharks and great white sharks -- two of three species currently afforded the highest protection under CITES-- are also being industrially processed at the Pu Qi factory. The products derived from these protected species are being exported to the United States, Canada and Italy, in contravention of the internationally-binding CITES agreement.
Ensuring a good welfare for animals housed in zoos, is not an easy job. It might not even be something we will ever really get a perfect grip on. Animal species have evolved over many years and their physical, physiological, social and behavioral traits have been developed in order for them to survive as best as they can in their natural environment.
In captivity, animals may face a number of challenges which evolution has not prepared them for and disables the animal to fulfill their behavioral needs. The absence of these, climate, diet, the size and characteristics of their enclosure or the fact that they have to rely on humans for their every need can cause an animal to feel stressed in which it starts to perform a stereotypic behavior. Repetitive, abnormal behavior is often regarded as an indicator of poor welfare and is studied as a coping mechanism, and measures of stress which can potentially go on to cause brain dysfunction. I believe, that the display of abnormal behavior patterns are not recognized enough by the public eye. That is why I have decided to make this documentary to educate you about what lies behind these stereotypic behaviors which we can easily identify, but might not have given a further thought about, or brought a negative judgement upon when visiting the zoo. The study of stereotypic behavior is complicated with many important factors that determines the health of a captive animal. 'Zoochosis' will bring you the whole picture of how animals experience living in a stressful and unnatural environment, and how it effects their mental and natural life.

Documentary short on the link between the free culture and free software movements, featuring Lawrence Lessig (Harvard / Creative Commons), Vincent Moon (Petite Planetes), Richard Stallman (Free Software Foundation), and Mitchell Baker (Mozilla).
The rise of open-source software development illustrates the relationship between computing innovation and ethical principles. The ethical concerns held by a community of software developers lead to innovation in open source licensing and copyright agreements (Kelty, 2008).
A community of developers came to believe that software code should be free and widely shared, rather than proprietary. What began as a method to create better software took on moral dimensions as supporters adopted arguments for freedom and autonomy. These ethics percolated until a large community of programmers believed that sharing code was the right thing to do -- both ethically and practically. This ethic of openness lead developers to experiment with ways to license their work for sharing under the existing U.S. copyright regime.
The result was a variety of creative commons licenses: "hacks" of copyright law that became innovations in their own right. These novel licenses allowed the open source movement to grow and prosper, and have spread beyond software to use in such diverse media distribution as book publishing and photo sharing. Once a fringe belief, open source ethics are slowly becoming institutionalized, and are now taught as good practice in diverse design labs and computer science classrooms.

Between 2000 and 2009, there was a 79 percent drop in the number of first-year undergraduate women considering computer science, even as products such as Facebook, Twitter, Angry Birds, etc. began making technology 'cool' again. And so, we have been told, time and time again, we need more women in technology. But we're not entirely convinced by the op-eds and panel discussions. Is there really a difference? The greatest technology companies of our time -- Apple, Google, Facebook -- have been successfully founded and run by men. And they seem to be doing a pretty good job.
she++: The Documentary (12 min: TV-14 DL) energetically proclaims 'Hello, World' after following smart, creative, and trailblazing technologists hard at work in hi-tech. This short documentary collects research and inspirational pieces of Silicon Valley's unsung heroes to galvanize us to explore our potential as 'femgineers'. Written and directed by recent Stanford University good girls gone geek, Ayna Agarwal and Ellora Israni, she++: The Documentary encourages the future CEOs, the innovative engineers, the techies and the fuzzies, the sisters, cousins, and daughters, to break away from the stereotype into a revolutionary field. As technology is becoming increasingly ubiquitous, all demographics must harness new ideas to transform and empower technology. Think of what more 'femgineers' could do.
Stories from high school girls, recently graduated female computer scientists now working in industry, female technology CEOs, Stanford academics, and Silicon Valley venture capitalists, build momentum as she++: The Documentary accumulates facts and statistics, and most promisingly, personal stories. This film will startle the world and inspire girls, young and old, to take the lack of a Y chromosome and make a girl's vision unique and useful in the world of code.

"I've been always interested in people's different opinions and point of views, especially what we as human beings think about our little world and what better question than ask people what they think the problem in the world is and not just that but also, if they gave me an answer, ask them if they have a solution for that problem or if they have been doing something about it and that is what this documentary is about. The objective was to show people's different point of views and put the question out there to people think about and maybe start doing something. I interviewed more than 50 people around Vancouver (and surroundings in BC, Canada) and Seattle, WA (USA), some people refused to speak in front of the camera but they talked to me anyways... I was surprised that almost every single one of the people that I approached had something to say about the subject, another interesting fact is that our point of view of the problem in the world is (in most cases) defined by our environment, the people around us, our social status, etc... is this the way it should be? Or maybe that is another problem, we don't think outside our reflective and selfish bubble."
