Trek to Yomi is a new side-scrolling action game, developed by Flying Wild Hog (best known for the Shadow Warrior reboot series). Set in the Edo period of Japan, the game follows a samurai by the name of Hiroki Goto who embarks on a quest for revenge on the people who destroyed his village.
The game was heavily inspired by classic samurai films, especially those from Akira Kurosawa. The comparisons between this and Ghost of Tsushima are inevitable, so on that subject, I'll say I think this game is a better tribute to the samurai classics, while Tsushima is a better game. Trek to Yomi nails the aesthetic perfectly; the static camera frames the action like scenes from a movie, and the artists did an amazing job getting the look of the game just right. The only knock against it, for me, is that the animation is not especially smooth, it can look a little janky even. I'd imagine that they just didn't have the budget and scope to make everything flow perfectly. It's not a big deal for me, anyway.
This is a playthrough on the unlockable "Kensei" difficulty. It's the highest difficulty in the game, but it's a bit of a gimmick mode. You die in one hit, but so does every enemy, besides the bosses. Honestly, the combat in the regular game isn't particularly great, so killing everything in one hit helps speed up the pace. I'd say that's a positive overall for me. The checkpoints are pretty generous too, so I wouldn't say Kensei mode is hard, either. Not that that's a bad thing, I still enjoyed the game. I'd certainly recommend it to fans of Akira Kurosawa's classics in particular.
Trek to Yomi is currently available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC. It's also on Game Pass on both PC and Xbox, which is how I played it.
