Starring Javier Bardem (in an incredible performance) the film delves into the complexities of a man struggling to reconcile his personal demons -- with the immense challenges of living on the fringe of society.Bardem portrays Uxbal, a street vendor and small-time criminal navigating the gritty underbelly of Barcelona. Uxbal's life is a constant struggle, plagued by poverty, illness, and the looming threat of death. As he faces a terminal diagnosis, he becomes consumed by a desperate quest to protect his children and secure their future. The film's gritty realism is accentuated by the bleak beauty of Barcelona's urban landscape. Bardem's performance is a raw and emotionally charged portrayal of a man grappling with his own mortality.The score, composed by Gustavo Santaolalla, accompanies Biutiful's narrative with minimalism and eclecticism. In many of the songs, Santaolalla is using a backing track of urban sounds against his principle melody. The effect is almost like dust on a film reel -- ever so slightly scratching away at the creation. Foremost in my memory is one of our early dates in 1998. (As a couple, it was that time, where you're just a few weeks in, and your mindset is a blissful combination of nervous anticipation and total comfort.)It was in early December, and we decided to have a movie night. As you did in 1998, we went to a local Blockbuster -- where the entire outdoor mall was decorated for Christmas. After making our selection, we returned to my car as a dusting of snow flurries came down. As we both opened our doors, Jen looked over at me and smiled -- as light snow flakes were falling against her dark brown hair. I remember thinking, "I am the luckiest guy on earth".Although short, this song never repeats a section and is a continuation of feathery motifs. The song reminds me of the campy, Roger Moore-era James Bond themes. With Sam Smith's crooning falsetto, it feels more in league with songs like: "Nobody Does it Better" (from The Spy Who Loved Me), "All Time High" (from Octopussy) and "For Your Eyes Only".The score of 2015's Spectre is by the iconic composer, Thomas Newman. Within the soundtrack, he has a lovely 2 minute version of this piece simply titled, Writing's On The Wall - Instrumental. Newman's instrumental version offered a more cinematic and orchestral take on the song -- so I based my fingerstyle guitar arrangement on his version.Radiohead also completed a theme for Spectre but ultimately lost out to Sam Smith's Writings On The Wall. This piece is the finale of M. Night Shyamalan's 2002 film, Signs.Hands down, my favorite M. Night Shyamalan movie is Signs. The humor, the humanity, and the early fall scenery of Pennsylvania (my home state) just get me every time. It's a movie that I return to every single fall. The soundtrack of Signs, by composer James Newton Howard, is nothing short of a masterpiece -- especially the final sequence known as The Hand of Fate (Parts 1 and 2).M. Night is a minimalist by nature and favors very lean movie making. He begrudgingly had to use CGI in Signs, and has a very hard time using music in his movies. He actually cuts his film so they "work" without music. Only then does he approach James Newton Howard for the score. If your so inclined, this is an excellent behind the scenes featurette from the Signs. You can see the tenuous minuet of their egos: bit.ly/3BwAmOHSigns opens with a very Hitchcockian 3 note motif. Though the opening is rather sinister, the motif was then used as a series of melodic arpeggios to exposit in the "heart" of final scene. This is known as The Hand of Fate - Part II.On a personal note, I have a strong belief in God. I pray and meditate daily. Ultimately, I think reason I resonate so much with Signs -- is that the film is profoundly spiritual. M. Night Shyamalan pulled off the unthinkable; a creepy and fun movie, that is deeply rooted in faith.In 2023, James Newton Howard released an album called Night After Night, that invites listeners into the eerie and suspenseful worlds of M. Night Shyamalan's films. The album features reimagined themes from Shyamalan's cinematic universe. The music conveys the emotional weight of the Lance Corporal Schofield (George MacKay) -- with themes of sacrifice, loss, and the enduring human spirit."Come Back to Us" is the final motif in 1917, as Schofield has just spoken with Lieutenant (Joseph) Blake played by Game of Thrones actor, Richard Madden. The acting by Madden is incredible -- as Lieutenant Blake simultaneously mourns and steels himself after learning of his brother's death. If you've ever heard the expression "stiff upper lip" -- this scene embodies it.LCpl Schofield returns to the base of tree (in a parallel scene to the opening) where the character reveals his family with a tiny pocket book of personal photos. One of the photos is a woman, accompanied by a note reading "Come back to us." His playful and sinister undertones perfectly narrate Beetlejuice's blend of comedy and horror.This one of my favorite musical themes from my childhood, but I couldn't imagine how I'd do it as a fingerstyle arrangement. I did The Last of Us thing for the quirky bass line, and some sparce intervals for the melody line.My own personal touch was adding a snippet of Day-O in the intro (ending on a minor) to introduce the main theme. This track is a testament to Santaolalla's ability to create music that not only complements the game visuals -- but also stands on its own as a work of art.The original piece is actually played on a 6 string banjo that Gustavo Santaolalla (additionally) employed for the title theme of The Last of Us Part II. Beyond Desolation translated easily to a regular guitar, and is very doable for beginner guitar players.I love this piece. The film's claustrophobic suspense, and iconic (H.R. Giger) creature design have made it a classic of the science fiction/horror genre. Alien was directed by Ridley Scott.Like it's prequels; Prometheus and Covenant, the original Alien theme has the explorative feel of a Star Trek cue. I played the motif in two different keys and adjoined them with a snippet of the Prometheus theme, "Life". The whole thing is a masterpiece. I love everything Gustavo Santaolalla does, but for me, the big two are: The Motorcycle Diaries and Brokeback Mountain.Gustavo Santaolalla's work on The Motorcycle Diaries (2004) embodies the word, "soundtrack". I view a (score) as more delicate work (like Brokeback Mountain) coloring the film with music. A soundtrack is more forceful, running in tandem with the characters. The backdrop of a film. The Motorcycle Diaries is a soundtrack -- in the truest sense of the word.La Muerte De La Poderosa (The Death of the Mighty) is one of the lesser realized songs from this film. With this piece, I tried to weave the flute melody into Santaolalla's guitar part to create a complete arrangement. In doing so, I used Gustavo Santaolalla's own technique of quick trills and slides -- so it sounds like something he might actually play.I hope you enjoy this, it's one of my favorite arrangements to play. This song is from their 2002 album, A Rush of Blood to the Head.To this day, Clocks is still mesmerizing. A truly compelling 4 bar progression: Eb Major, Bb Minor, Bb Minor, F Minor. That's 3 minor shapes in a row -- yet the riff sounds overwhelmingly positive -- which is normally the domain of major chords. A true stroke of genius.To my knowledge, I can't think of another song (other than Coldplay's The Speed of Sound) that doubles up on the middle (minor) chord. 'The Speed of Sound' was clearly a later attempt to capture the magic of Clocks. At the time, they weren't fooling me -- but I wonder if folks realized the two chord progressions are identical.I'll give you a quick lesson on the chord theory of Clocks, you'll be amazed:The Major Scale, if you remember from music class in Elementary School, is: "Do Re Me Fa Sol La Ti Do". That's 8 notes. They can also be numbered, simply like this: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8.There is a corresponding major/minor chord built off of each of those 8 notes. The musical key of Clocks is Ab Major. Here are the chords built from each of those 8 notes, in order:(1) Ab Major(2) Bb Minor(3) C Minor(4) Db Major(5) Eb Major(6) F Minor(7) G Diminished(8) Ab Major (one octave higher).The 1, 3, and 5 chords are a traditional progression for Blues, Folk, and Rock music. For "Clocks", Coldplay uses the 5, 2, and 6 chords. That's a very avant-garde progression. Even stranger, they double the 2 chord so their progression looks like this: 5 2 2 6.Everyone has used 1, 3, 5 progressions since Blues music was invented. It's clearly in the public domain. That's why Tom Petty suing Sam Smith over "Stay With Me" was patently absurd. However, Coldplay was legitimately the first to use the 5 2 2 6 progression with Clocks. This piece is from The Last of Us.One of the things that gives Gustavo Santaolalla his je ne sais quoi is the element of surprise within his music. Often times, he’ll have a verse section that is slightly minor keyed, and emotionally ambiguous (perfect for film). Santaolalla will then proceed with a major lift in the chorus section. That is normal operating procedure, but his lifts always have a stark contrast…in a good way. “Fleeting” does just that.Fleeting is multi-instrumental piece from The Last of Us, and my arrangement is a catchall of those parts. When distilled to a single guitar, you can really see Gustavo Santaolalla’s expert use of Major and Minors. The lyrics come from a poem written on September 14, 1814, by a then 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet, Francis Scott Key.He wrote the piece after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by the British Royal Navy -- in Outer Baltimore Harbor in the War of 1812. Key was inspired by the large U.S. flag, with 15 stars and 15 stripes, flying triumphantly above the fort during the U.S. victory.The poem was set to the tune of "To Anacreon in Heaven", a popular British song written by John Stafford Smith. The piece soon became a well-known U.S. patriotic song.While The Star Spangled Banner was first recognized for official use by the U.S. Navy in 1889. Man on Fire is a violent revenge film, and eventually led to Denzel playing a similar character in the Equalizer franchise.I remember at the time, Man on Fire was a very gritty movie, and I loved it! This piece is from the 2005 documentary Grizzly Man.Grizzly Man is a 2005 American documentary film by acclaimed German director, Werner Herzog. The film accounts the life (an eventual death) of bear enthusiast, Timothy Treadwell at Katmai National Park, Alaska. The park has the largest coastal grizzlies in the world, as the bears gorge on mollusks and spawning salmon. The amazing video footage that Treadwell shot, is a window into the grim reality of nature -- as one of the bears he loved and protected tragically took his life. [We'll use the terms Grizzly and Brown Bear interchangeably. They're essentially the same --except for their location and diet. Grizzlies are inland, foraging on anything they can eat. Browns are coastal, and much larger from their abundant marine diet.]"Grizzly Man" is pieced together with Treadwell's own remarkable footage of the Alaskan brown bears, and interviews with the quirky people who knew him. Werner Herzog is great, I love his work -- but his narration and thick German accent are really weird in the backdrop of Alaska; the great American frontier. Treadwell himself, was also a very strange character. These two constants give the film a subversive comedic element. At times, it's like watching a mockumentary -- like an episode of The Office.Timothy "Treadwell" (Timothy Dexter) was not an expert on bears -- much less Alaskan grizzlies. By all accounts he was just a random guy. The film examines Treadwell's motivations to live among a sleuth of wild grizzly bears on an Alaskan reserve. He believed that he was uniquely connected to these bears, and that he had bridged some type of gap between human and beast.I have family in Alaska, I've been there several times, and I can emphatically say that Timothy Treadwell was crazy, and deluded. I've seen grizzlies first hand. Even the small ones are 450lbs. They're majestic and terrifying creatures. They can run as fast as a dog, and scale trees to the top. During a fishing trip on the upper Kenai - I recall seeing a rounded pathway through woods as we drifted down the river. It looked like someone used a tunneling machine to bore down saplings, small trees, and brush. An Alaskan gentleman in our fishing party explained that a grizzly probably caught a scent -- and took off through the brush, knocking everything down in it's way.The most remarkable thing about this Treadwell story is that he lasted 13 years! It's just pure luck, that the grizzlies he lived with, were more interested in their abundant food.The documentary received widespread acclaim from critics and is now considered to be among the best films of the 2000s and of the 21st century.The film's soundtrack is by British singer-songwriter and guitarist Richard Thompson. As a guitarist, the soundtrack jumped out at me immediately. The guitar playing is phenomenal, and the music perfectly mirrors the Alaskan expanse. Most of the DVD's special features are dedicated to the recording of the music. You can find all of those performances on YouTube. As she's unbound by the convention of her times, Bella embarks on a quest of self-discovery and liberation.The music, by composer Jerskin Fendrix, is equally as innovative as the film. To me, the soundtrack begs the image of windup doll. While the film is bleak and disquieting, like the novel, it's beautifully composed. The Road has magnificent performances from Viggo Mortensen (the father) and Kodi Smit-McPhee (the boy)."All I know is the child is my warrant, and if he is not the word of God, then God never spoke.." - Father (The Road)I see The Road as a love letter to fathers, specifically fathers of sons. I saw the movie years ago when it was first released in 2009. I found the film to be well done and affecting. I rewatched it very recently and my reaction was deeply emotional. As a father of a son, about the age of "the boy" in the film, I cried my eyes out. I cannot get this movie out of my mind.Cormac McCarthy (the father of 2 sons) and Viggo Mortensen (father of 1 son) created and transcended the quintessential and most realist patriarch ever. The way father (Mortensen) negotiates nature and nurture with his little boy. Steeling him during their harrowing journey while comforting him, and preserving his childhood in any moment of respite. It's poetic.I often think of my son, Matthew as a gift from God. It's actually the meaning of his name -- though we didn't that until after he was born in 2015. As his Dad, every action I willing take in life; physically, musically, or whatever -- is to the benefit of him. That is the incredible gift from God: my "self" is gone, and it's only our son, Matthew. The song is considered a sea shanty; work songs sung by merchant sailors.I first heard this tune as a kid when Quint (played by actor Robert Shaw) sang Spanish Ladies in the film, JAWS. Shaw was a well known alcoholic, and was drunk during most, if not all of the filming of JAWS. The character of Quint was also a drunken sailor type -- so this was some 'more than convenient' method acting on Shaw's part. He's the best character in the film, and in the Spanish Ladies scene -- he's clearly lit.[The most popular modern incarnation of the song is from the game, Assassin's Creed IV, Black Flag.]My fingerstyle guitar version has more of a haunting, Celtic vibe to it. This piece is by composer, Jeff Russo.The FX anthology series Fargo, is a dark comedy crime drama inspired by the 1996 Coen brothers film of the same name. The series is set in various locations in the American Midwest, and each season tells a new crime story with a new cast of characters.The show's theme song is by composer, Jeff Russo (whose also the lead guitarist for the 90's Alt-rock band, Tonic). It's a haunting ballad that perfectly captures the show's dark and quirky tone. When I first listened to this piece, the melancholy motif struck me as kinda Russia-sounding; as though it could've been from Eastern Promises.I easily arranged the piece for guitar, and I have to think that's because Jeff is foremost: a guitarist. Gustavo Santaolalla: Tazarine (Babel) | fingerstyle guitar + TAB Evan Handyside 2024-01-15 | Guitar tab and blog: intellimusica.com/tazarineTazarine is a song by Argentine composer Gustavo Santaolalla, from his 2006 Academy award winning soundtrack for Babel. Babel was directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu. The multi-narrative drama features interwoven stories taking place in Morocco, Japan, Mexico, and the United States.The song is a haunting instrumental that features a simple melody played on an Oud; a pear-shaped, fretless guitar used commonly in Middle Eastern and North African music. Gustavo Santaolalla was unfamiliar with the Oud prior to recording music for Babel. Essentially this gave Santaolalla the "beginner's mind" when writing music on the instrument. He wasn't biased from culture or tradition, and was able to create something entirely original.Tazarine has always been one of my favorites, and my arrangement is slightly expanded. This piece is also the central musical theme of Alexander Payne's, The Holdovers.Silver Joy was a perfect choice for The Holdovers. This song was used through the film as a motif. The simple E minor to F progression has a tenderness to it, without being too overly sentimental. When I heard the “Cat Stevens-like” tune in the film — I was convinced it was from an obscure 70’s folk artist. However Silver Joy is actually by American Indie-folk artist. Damien Jurado. The piece is from his 2014 album, Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Son.If you’re a fan of Alexander Payne’s films (e.g. Sideways, The Decedents) you’ll love The Holdovers. Paul Giamatti is truly immersed in the role, as a crusty middle-aged teacher. His character has become complacent with his environment and is physically and emotionally deteriorating — like a rusty car in a junkyard. Newcomer, Dominic Sessa has an incredible performance as Angus, a student, whose brash humor hides his own traumas. My favorite being the prisoner transport device -- that is a clear ode to the chair in Beetlejuice.The music is from Dutch composer, Tom Holkenborg (aka. Junkie XL) who has composed the music for all of Zack Snyder's films since Batman v Superman onward. He's most famous for the gnarly, lacerating Wonder Woman cue.This piece is the sentimental motif from Rebel Moon. It's first introduced as Kora is plowing the fields late into the evening. The cue is entitled, 'The Wolf Who Became A Woman'. Later in the film, a more focused version is heard.
