Quick Tip! #shorts #woodworking Make with Jake 2022-04-24 | My jointer was out of commission but I REALLY needed to get a twist out of this board!Here's how I did it:Using some playing cards, I shimmed the board flat on top of a scrap piece of plywood.Then, I used some hot glue to hold everything in place.Once everything was secure, I could send the board and send through the planer!Ta-da! Better Woodworking Templates! #shorts Make with Jake 2022-04-09 | Crazy laser idea I thought of!So, my printer died...AGAIN! and I needed to print templates in order to make a few more guitar hangers for my collection. It just so happens that I recently got a laser and thought that this would be an awesome use case for a low cost laser engraver! Instead of printing out a paper template and sticking it onto wood with contact adhesive, I decided to engrave the template right onto the wood! This method works really well and can be handy because it saves the hassle of paper peeling off of the wood while you cut out the template. Painting a box made from Zebrawood!! 😱 Make with Jake 2021-12-15 | Let's build a pencil box out of zebra wood and cherry!here is the box I received: youtu.be/wcZDTekkC_IPlaylist to everyone elses boxes (they are all amazing!): youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPS65dncTWNpFxlYR6CVvxo8sx7Ev-3Y6I signed on for a gift exchange with a few other YouTubers, but like a smart, forward thinking individual, I waited until the last minute to start the project. AH!!This wooden pencil box is made from zebra wood for the outer box, and cherry for the inner box drawer. I really liked the sleekness and elegant nature of this design, so I used a simple hard wax finish for the zebra wood outer pencil box. Hardwax oil is hands down my favorite finish. Super easy to apply, and it leaves the wood feeling like...wood! Not plastic, like lacquer and polyurethane do.For the inner box (or drawer) of the pencil box, I finished the cherry with shellac. Shellac dries really fast and gives good contrast to the wood grain. As a bonus, it works as a seal coat. ADJUSTABLE DIY Guitar Wall Hanger // Heavy Duty! Make with Jake 2021-10-13 | FREE Template! All you need is a cheap coping saw to cut out the shape of the wood base, and a drill to drill holes for the pipe! I recently decided that I needed to play guitar more, but I realized right away that one of the main reasons why I never practice, was because my guitar was always in its case, in a closet, hidden away. What I really needed, was a guitar stand or something so that my guitar could be out where I could easily grab it and start practicing my mad scales skills!Worth noting is that I own about 6 guitars now, so I wanted something that had some scalability. (ha). Anyways, I decided that a diy wall mounted guitar hanger would be the perfect way to go. Not only would a diy guitar stand be perfect for what I needed, I could make more of them as I added more guitars to my collection.I designed my diy wall guitar mount from black pipe and caps, along with some ambrosia maple and saddle stitched leather sleeves to protect the guitar. I've never stitched leather before, and I was really happy with how well my first go at leather working came out. Beginner Dye Tutorial for Guitar Burst Effect Make with Jake 2021-10-01 | Short Tutorial on how to get a Blue Burst Dye effect on a GuitarAfter watching a ridiculous number of youtube videos all about how to get the PERFECT burst effect on a guitar using dye, I finally decided to dive right in and try my hand at a translucent blue burst dye effect on my figured maple guitar kit! What I discovered was that this process is actually WAY easier than many tutorial videos out there would lead you to believe! Many tutorials suggest layering the dye and sanding in between each application of dye. I found that this was completely unnecessary and in fact, can have a negative effect on the depth of the grain and WORSE can result in you accidently sanding right through the veneer! UHG! The dye method I decided to use on my guitar kit was a "dye once, cry once" method. Basically, I sanded the veneer down, raised the grain, then sanded again with 400 grit paper. Then I carefully applied dye starting with the lights mixture first, and then working my way to the darker mixtures. This ultimately resulted in a PERFECT blue burst effect on my guitar using water based dye from Trans Tint. Perfect Pocket Holes NO CLAMPS! #shorts Make with Jake 2021-02-17 | You don't need to spend tons of money on expensive Kreg right angle clamps! This pocket hole hack is a great way to make sure that you get perfectly flush pocket hole joints every. Single. Time!This Kreg Pocket Hole Jig Hack is super easy. Line up the joint, making sure the two boards are flush. Then, use an air nailer to shoot one or two pin nails into the end of the joint, holding the two boards in place. At this point, the joint is NOT very strong, but that's what pocket holes are for! Now, just use your driver to install a few pocket hole screws - no clamps needed! The pocket hole joint will stay perfectly aligned. No slipping or sliding. For a final, professional touch, use a small amount of wood filler to hit the pin or brad nail holes on the face of the board.What super awesome hacks do you use in the shop? BUILD this Simple OUTFEED TABLE with DIY Tool Storage! In a future video, I will be building the rolling DIY Tool Storage cabinets.I never liked how shop furniture always looks….second grade, but I really want my shop to look crisp and clean, like I had a million subscribers or something. So, I decided to fix that!I designed this outfeed table for table saw to look like a premium build, but used low cost materials to save you money in the shop! The frame features a unique dowel hole + pocket hole joinery method that almost eliminates the need for clamps. I used solid pine construction lumber, I cut each piece from a 2x12, which allowed me to work around all the knots and defects - this method cost less than half of what buying premium pine boards would have cost!Then, I built the top out of a super flat, super cheap particle board. I figured, if its good enough for a kitchen, why not the shop?And then it gets better….instead of buying the SUPER EXPENSIVE black melamine from the woodstore, I bought low cost Formica laminate sheeting and glued it on top! Find the center of a board - NO MATH!! #shorts Make with Jake 2021-01-27 | How to find measurements WITHOUT MATH! #shortsIf you have ever tried to find the center of a board, this video is for you! No more trying to divide weird fractions in your head, easily find the center of a board with no math using this awesome woodworking trick! All you need to do to find the center of a board using a tape measure is to measure the width of the board, and then find the next largest number that is easily divisible by 2. Then, move the tape measure on an angle until that larger number lines up with the board edge. Now just divide that larger number in half and BAM! you found the center of the board edge!A great thing about the Woodworkers Notebook is that it has handy equations built right into the book, so you never have to worry about forgetting how to calculate board feet for your project ever again! Super handy. Links in description below.Formica. Trying to up the quality and look of my shop equipment, so i decided to glue some black formica onto the base of this jig. This is not required, but definitely gives a premo looks. TIP: formica is $50 for a 4x8 sheet. This is way cheaper than buying black melamine from the wood store.Once the glue dried, i used a flush trim bit to trim the formica, and then went back and used a chamfering bit to eash over the edge.BlockThe mounted block could be made out of a large piece of wood, but I watned to use the scrap from my 12x12 sheet of baltic birch. Glueing small blocks together like this is a challenge, so I used extra clamps and scrap wood to keep the edges perfectly aligned.Kreg cutout: cutting out the pocket for the R3 kreg jig is critical. It is really important that you make sure that the depth of the pocket allows the jig to become flush with the front of the block, and the width should be a snug but easily assembled fit. Trust me, this makes clamping later on much easier.This design uses a stepped pocket, where the wider pocket actually clamps the jig, and the narrower, but deeper pocket, is simply for clearance.I highly suggest checking the fit as you go. You definitely dont want to mess this part up.Drill the crosshole throught the block. Make sure to set the drill back far enough taht it does not pass through the pocket created for the jig. YOu dont want the bolt to hit the jig.It turns out that my holes did not drill very straight, so I had to go bsack with a twist bit to open the holes up a little bit so that the bolt could fit though.Grab the base and mark the locations for the screws and then predill and countersink them through the base.To amke sure everything stays aligned, i clamped the block to the base, and then predrilled and ran some screws into it. Quick tip: wax screwsI took the screws right back out so that I could then slit the block and cut the dust collection hole.Looking back, I should have cut the dust collection hole before slitting the block, but oh well. I got it figured out. #mistakesweremade
