5-part arrangement/cover of シオンタウンのテーマ (“Lavender Town Theme”), track 31 of the soundtrack of 1997 role-playing video game ポケットモンスター 赤 (Pokémon Red Version). Commissioned by a group of students for a recording project at Rutgers University. Arranged for flute, trumpet, piano, and electric bass. Recorded at Studio B of Rutgers Electro-Acoustic Lab (REAL). Notated in Finale 2014; recording and post-processing via Pro Tools. Flute and trumpet recorded separately in Mono with AKG C414 large diaphragm condenser microphone in close positioning. Piano and electric bass tracked line-in directly into a 56 channel Yamaha 02R96VCMb 24-bit digital mixer.
Original 1997 track was limited by 3-voice polyphony limit of 8-bit Gameboy hardware [size=7pt](The GBS had two pulse waves, an arbitrary 4-bit wave channel, and a noise channel). The arrangement, not limited by technological constraints, offers a more atmospheric take on the iconic track (extended bass frequencies, reverberations, sustain parameters, orchestral timbres, etc.).

Thank you for the life lessons Virizion.
After a much needed month of rest and respite, I bring you the beginning of a new era -- the beginning of my PMD2 Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky PIANO COLLECTIONS project! I promised it on my website months ago, and it is now time to deliver. I hope you all will support my endeavor to arrange ALL 141 tracks of this game's OST. As part of my craft, these will all be aurally transcribed by ear: I do not, have not, and will not employ MIDI rips from the game itself, as so many other "remastering" projects have hitherto done, limiting their creative potential. It will take many years, given the history of similar endeavors (PSMD and GtI), but it shall be done.

It's rather ironic to find such a plaintive piano piece like this in a fighting game, but it makes sense considering the context: a well-earned peace following the war's end. While I did not play this myself, I take great pleasure in having had the privilege of engraving the sheet music for this arrangement.
Fun Facts: The title catch intro uses two Super Mystery Dungeon sound effects (namely SE_EVT_MYUU_LIGHT_01 and SE_EVT_BAKIIIIIIN).
Both .net and .com will work. I own both domain name extensions.

Making "concert transcription"-style piano arrangements of EDM music is certainly a new experience for me. I commend the variety of genres to be found in the soundtrack of Pokkén Tournament, befitting of such a multifaceted fighting game.
"A Little Kerfuffle" (小さなもめごと) exploits terraced dynamics in order to communicate an atmosphere of perturbation. Also, it seldom uses its tonic chord, G minor, but instead hints at that being the key due to its frequent usage of various forms of its dominant chord, D7(b9). Much like the characters this song represents (i.e. Pancham), it skirts around the subject matter (the key) without directly saying it -- passive-aggressive communication at its finest!

I like to imagine the tune of "Serene Village" (おだやか村) and other BGM not as merely background music, but as folk tunes memorialized by their respective locales. Perhaps little Oshawott grew up listening to his old pops humming the tune of Serene Village every now and then while cooking his favorite meal. Perhaps one day, your Partner is feeling down on himself, and knowing that that song holds a special place in his heart, you pick up an old guitar and play the song to cheer him up. That's what I like to imagine.

"Whoa!" (わわわわわっ!!) runs the gamut of musical dissonance with its frequent juxtaposition of closely positioned chromatic intervals. Tension is always present, even during the brief moments of mezzo-piano. While the other "caricature" pieces of this length come off as endearing or perhaps eccentric, this song clearly portrays a state of fatuity and disequilibrium.

"Children of Serene Village" (村の子どもたち) is an uppity, energetic piece arranged with an accompaniment reminiscent of Stride (a genre whose chief characteristic is the motion of the left-hand "striding" up and down the piano). It also uses a wide variety of instrumental palettes to give an air of juvenility, particularly in the case of the whimsical usage of the bagpipe during the last 4 measures of the loop.

Being only 8 measures on repeat, "Nuzleaf's House" (コノハナの家) was begging to be expanded upon. As such, I decided to compose an original descant-like piano countermelody to accompany the piece. You will notice towards the end that I paraphrase a section of Baram Town in the descant. This idea was inspired by a little headcanon of mine..... what if Nuzleaf was formerly a member of Team Shiftry back in PMD1, but later decided to move to the Water Continent and settle down in Serene Village? If so, I felt it befitting that his theme perhaps nod to his Wind Continent heritage.

An endearing little jingle, "Title Theme" (タイトルキャッチ) is our first exposure to the soundtrack's main leitmotif. One can't help but take note of the striking imagery in this brief 10 second cutscene, particularly a massive tree overarching the nearby town. It would appear that there seems to be a sort of correlation between what the leitmotif represents and the symbolism of the scenery.

"Over the Mountains" (山を越えて) is an atmospheric piece that evokes a quality of transcendentalism through modal mixture and exotic orchestration. The original composition prominently features the balaban, a double-reeded Middle Eastern instrument that is often used to accompany pastoral settings. In order to compensate for the lack of such an instrument in my piano arrangement, I collaborated with NeonRaxorBlade to create a warm, intimate tone in the piano recording that would still preserve the etherealness of the OST. "It Is What It Is..." (しかたない......) contends with the likes of Guildmaster Wigglytuff for accompanying scenes of bizarre happenstance. Frequent chromatic neighboring tones adorn this boisterous melody in much the same fashion as the jaunty tune of everyone's favorite connoisseur of apples. Train hard and stock up on Reviver Seeds to get the left hand accompaniment up to tempo.
"At Just Such a Moment" (ちょっとしたひと時に) is a quaint, contemplative piece that evokes a mood of momentary respite by its steady, easy-going tempo and quartal harmonies. What you see in this video is my typical piano reduction score, but instead of just typical VST piano for playback, I rearranged my own arrangement to also include guitar as accompaniment. I felt these sounds better captured my interpretation of the piece, for a more intimate listening experience.
Lush Forest (ジョバンとうげ) contrasts greatly with its predecessor, Open Pass. Its stable chord progressions based in E minor (with the occasional raised 6th borrowed from the parallel Dorian) reflect a sense of You as the Player becoming comfortable with your new Poké-form, and now able to tackle the gravity of your situation with boldness.
Interestingly enough, the compositional formula for this piece (outlined above) makes it very compatible with elements of the Primal Dialga theme from PMD2. It's no wonder then that this particular song already merited two arrangements from AAA-grade Poké-remixers (i.e. Kamex & GlitchxCity).
After a nice, restful Christmas break, I'm ready to rev-up the arranging engine once again! Open Pass is interesting not only as a standalone composition, but also in the context of how it reflects Chapter 1's immediate break in typical PMD narrative tropes. Open Pass is a whimsical, Lydian-esque piece that skirts between stable tonality and the unpredictability of modal mixtures (particularly whole-tones scales), which reflects well upon the appeals to familiar and unfamiliar plot motifs in the PMD series. Amnesia and metamorphosis were expected, but a genteel Nuzleaf and a pack of enigmatic Beheeyem to greet your arrival instead of your trusty Partner were not. Kudos to the composers.
A year ago last December I made my proud return to the mysterious world of the Internet with my upload of the "Opening" theme of PMD: Gates to Infinity. As nice as making PSMD music has been, the PMD: GtI soundtrack will always hold a special place in my heart. Just look how far my project has gone -- with 26 unique arrangements, the entire first quarter of the OST is 100% complete. I mean sure, I'll probably be having mid-life crisis before I ever get all these done (Rescue Team, Explorers, Gates, Super...), but it's a dream worth aspiring to!

Such a cinematic intro. The music itself reminded me of an epic film score prelude... Pikachu in Gotham City (lolwut?). The way the composition sneaks in the PMD1 motif at the beginning was brilliant as well.

The return of the personality test in PSMD was such a nostalgic experience. If only Blue/Red Rescue Team looked this good back in 2005! Speaking of which, the PSMD test results yielded Mudkip for me.... which is what I got the VERY 1ST time I opened up Blue Rescue Team 10 years ago! Destiny.

The fear of death drives us all; where can we find solace? If there is an afterlife, what does that matter to those doomed to cease to exist? If their existence could be preserved, to what lengths would they go to protect it? How much would they sacrifice?
This is the joint dilemma that both Grovyle and Dusknoir faced, and yet, their solutions are entirely different. Grovyle holds an altruistic worldview -- he is willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good because he is content with the understanding that by doing so, he is truly living. Dusknoir, on the other hand, uncontent his current reality but willing to bear its bleakness anyway, will exercise everything in his power to eliminate threats to the timeline, seeing any existence, even a subsistence, better than utterly disappearing. It is a touching moment when these two rivals finally come to an understanding of each other. I hope my arrangement captures the emotions this song is meant to evoke.

Bringing you a Bespin oldie this time! I arranged "Menu 1" (along with a few other SSBM songs) back in 2012 (if you couldn't tell already by the rather unpolished engraving), but I figured while we all wait for my impending barrage of Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon sheets on Nov. 20th, I could revive some of my NON-PMD projects (impossibru!).
...and yes, despite me being absolute crap at Melee, it's still my favorite of the 4 entries. Fanboys will be fanboys XD
In order to tide off the temptation to spoil SuperPMD for myself, I decided to take a trip down memory lane -- good ol' PMD Rescue Team, whose 10th anniversary is nigh at hand! Surprisingly, over the last decade, virtually no one has endeavored to give the soundtrack a proper ORCHESTRATION, though entire OST remasterings and remixes of popular pieces are plentiful -- that is, until I stumbled across a certain Youtuber called Lotias, who as of last month set out to systematically re-orchestrate the soundtrack in chronological order (much like my own PMD GtI project). Despite the superior quality of his work, it remains criminally underviewed, and his project is now stagnant. As such, I felt inspired to transcribe his orchestrations (with a few of my own twists) in the hopes of siphoning some of my following to him. Please enjoy!

Egad, this took nearly a month! I hope it was worth the wait. Now bringing you the latest installment of *BespinBen's PMD GtI Arrangement Project Super Complete* (^o^)=b
I try to make it a point that I fully intend to work on the OST in chronological order only, but sometimes there's a track that just begs to be done immediately. "Dreams and Hopes" is one of these special few. Though the track only plays once in the entire game, I believe it's for that very reason that the emotions I associate with this song are so strong. There's a little bit of Dunsparce in all of us, desperately wanting to make a positive influence in the world, but held back by feelings of inadequacy. NeonRaxorBlade's lyrics (which I included in my sheet music at the bottom of page 2) really conveys this message well, hence why I included them.
I must admit, though it would be to appear a fairly straightforward piece of music to transcribe, this arrangement really took A LOT out of me. The second half (measures 19+) was especially challenging because frankly there's just no easy way to translate the sonorous sounds of a string ensemble to the piano. This is where I must thank Latios212 for his contribution to the arrangement, as he was able to candidly point out the shortcomings of the MANY accompaniment textures I devised for the passage, until finally arriving at the present one.

Another recurring piece in the series! Unlike Boss Battle or Job Clear though, the Danger theme always has stayed virtually the same in every game. Even the 2nd version of the Gates to Infinity rendition "The Coming Danger: Arrangement" (also in this sheet music video) is just the 1st version transposed a 4th lower with 3/4 the original tempo (and some small instrumentation differences). Interestingly, the Danger theme, in all its incarnations, actually derives itself from the Sinister Woods theme of PMD Blue/Red Rescue Team.

Another cover + sheet music combo video, but this time, by yours truly! Some might lament this track as being one of the more lackluster pieces of the soundtrack (since it's just a reduced version of "Choosing Pokémon"), but even so, I decided to give it some love. I did vary the texture somewhat by using the pedal, filling some chords, and varying the transposition of the marimba line, but I do believe this is the most ideal piano adaptation of this piece, as opposed to a strict transcription which wouldn't carry over the same effect (since tubular bells and pizzicato strings have very unique overtones). Enjoy~

Oh, and it just so turns out that my pizzicato sound sample I used in the 3rd repeat sounds almost exactly like the GtI pizzicato soundfont. I'll be darned!

My latest piano arrangement is at last finished (so much for my one-sheet-a-week goal, lol). It's interesting to note that the original Japanese title for Stompstump Peak (トントン山) is transliterated as "ton-ton mountain". The word "ton-ton" is actually a Japanese onomatopoeia for a "tapping" sound [i.e. like Irish tap-dancing], so the Celtic vibe this piece gives off makes perfect sense. But! what came first though -- the music or the name?

I started working on this non-stop the day the Japanese trailer first came out, so over the last 5 days I have put in about 30 hours into this bad boy. Thankfully I had both the Japanese and English trailers in tandem to piece together this wonderfully thrilling arrangement, though, picking out the music from behind the Nintendo Direct voice-overs was especially challenging (esp. in the English trailer).
Anyway, I absolutely adore this new Title Theme! Reminds me a lot of the style of the Gates to Infinity "Opening" (which leads me to believe maybe at least 1 or 2 people got carried over from the composition staff). It starts off with a bombastic arrangement of the iconic Rescue Team motif, introduces the game's own motifs at first very charmingly but gradually growing in splendor, and then it finally breaks out with a glorious trumpet solo before the music tapers out at the end (jerks!). Hopefully when the full version comes out and I can actually hear the music clearly without all the background noise from the Nintendo Direct voice-overs, I won't have made too many errors...
