Hannover Airport englishWe want to show you something really special – runway lighting at Hanover Airport at night. At dusk, a veritable shower of lights appears. Aircraft land almost automatically, but lights always give the pilots orientation as to whether things are going right. On the taxiways and the apron, lights of various colours, so-called navigation lights, show the right way. The intervals and colours are internationally standardized and the lamps are embedded in the ground so that the large aircraft can simply roll over them. If a lamp is broken, the airport transport manager registers this on one of his daily control rounds. This time he took us along. We can promise you – the sea of lights at night is a splendid sight at the airport.
“With increasing darkness we put lighting control into action. This means looking to see if all the lights necessary for air traffic are on. This includes the lighting on the apron, the red obstruction lights and others. Are all positions illuminated? Are the docking systems ready for operation?
We will now begin with lighting control on the runways.
Good evening ground control, Airport 1
Switchboard: “Airport 1, start”
“Okay. I just talked to the ground controller. He cleared me for the taxiways – but to begin with only up to the ground marking. We can’t inspect the actual runway yet. While I drive along the taxiways I look to see if all the obstruction lights are on. Whether the centerlines are illuminated. These are the green lights on the yellow line in front of us.
Now we’ve got a new frequency.
Good evening tower, Airport 1, ground marking 09 left for lighting control.”
Switchboard: “Airport 1, good evening. Request permission to access 09 left.”
“Permission to access runway 09 left is granted for Airport 1.”
Switchboard: “Airport 1, please leave the runway again. We have a take-off..”
“The tower assigns me to time slots between aircraft. That means that take-offs and landings on the runways go ahead as usual. We squeeze in between.
In principle we have two modes. For one, standard white illumination like you see here. Red illumination is switched on in foggy weather.
If I see any lamps not functioning properly, I notify the control room. In cases of anything more serious, I notify apron control or air traffic control.
Although I am in charge of lighting control, I also look to see what condition the runway is in, of course. Sometimes I get out to judge a situation better or even pick something up which doesn’t belong there.
That’s got its appeal. It makes the job desirable. The illumination and all the airplanes coming in. I think it’s quite unique.”

Hanover Airport depends on biomonitoring using bees to gather routine data on the quality of the air at and around Hanover Airport. The analysis of the honey reflects the pollution of the area since plants absorb pollutants from air, water and soil and pass them on to bees in the form of nectar and/or pollen. Three bee colonies are employed at Hanover Airport. During the summer months, they number as many as 200,000 bees. Bee colonies traverse their flying area very intensively, covering a surface of at least 12 square kilometers. Each bee makes about 40 forays per day, visiting around 4,000 blossoms in the process. In the spring, everything from crocuses to daffodils, willow catkins to hawthorn and fruit blossoms to rape seed offer pollen and nectar for bees at and around the airport.

For three days, Hanover will serve as the meeting point for decision-makers in the sector – airlines, airport operators and tourism experts. As the most important continental event of its kind, Routes Europe takes place annually and is held in a different European country each time. The format includes a trade fair, business meetings and a conference program.
Hanover Airport asserted itself in a ten-month-long application process for the host role, winning out over eight competitors. The State of Lower Saxony and the City of Hanover provided active support during the application phase.
Olaf Lies, Lower Saxony’s Minister for Economic Affairs, Labor and Transport, is thrilled: “We are really glad to enhance the popularity of Lower Saxony and Hanover through this event – as a business location and as an attractive tourist destination.”
Hanover‘s Mayor, Stefan Schostok, is also delighted: “The City of Hanover congratulates the airport on being chosen for the Routes Europe 2019. As an international exhibition city, Hanover offers excellent framework conditions to act as the first German host of this major aviation trade fair.”
Dr. Raoul Hille, Managing Director of Hanover Airport, sees this event as offering the best prerequisites for perpetuating successful growth: “For us, this is a huge advantage in regard to distribution marketing. “We are the energy scouts. Our job is to implement energy-saving measures at Hanover Airport.”
Lena Haase – an energy scout at Hanover Airport
“Energy conservation is a big issue in today’s society – economically as well.”
“I think we must all join forces and do something about climate change. We can all start by taking small steps in that direction.
The task of energy scouts is to raise awareness among their colleagues, encouraging them to think about how to reduce energy consumption wherever possible.
We always try to keep our eyes open and give colleagues tips on how to conserve energy on our daily tour of the offices.”
“Our aim is to motivate our colleagues to save energy, making this a conscious part of their daily routine so they really turn off their PC or switch the lights off when leaving a room.”
“We are successful if we manage to give our colleagues a nudge. The response so far is quite promising.”
“So far we’ve got very positive feedback from our colleagues and that really motivates us to keep going.”A new passenger display panel in Terminal CHannover Airport english2017-04-12 | Successful conversion at Hanover Airport. Thanks for the good reviews and your commentsA really good holidayHannover Airport english2017-03-02 | Service-oriented, barrier-free and child-friendly
A good holiday is the perfect way to take a time-out from daily routine. But to make sure it really is good, Touristikmarketing Niedersachsen has launched several quality initiatives. 48 enterprises, institutions and municipalities have now been tested and certified accordingly. Daniela Behrens, State Secretary of Lower Saxony’s Ministry for Economy, Labor and Transport, presented the certificates at Hanover Airport.
Daniela Behrens – Ministry for Economy, Labor and Transport
“I am always glad when I get the chance to honor enterprises and organizations that have done so much for tourism. Today we awarded 59 certificates to recipients from all regions of Lower Saxony. Hotels, children’s holiday camps and tourism organizations – the tourism sector here in Lower Saxony really accomplishes a lot. So it is only fitting that we should acknowledge and reward them for this.”
Service-oriented, barrier-free and child-friendly – those are indispensable aspects of tourism. Only those who feel they are in good hands, irrespective of age or physical limitations, return to holiday spots or recommend them to others. The quality initiatives “Servicequalität in Deutschland”, “Reisen für alle” und “KinderFerienLand” aim to ensure this. Hanover Airport has already been certified in one category, which is why it was selected as the venue for this event.
Daniela Behrens – Ministry for Economy, Labor and Transport
“Hanover Airport has already been certified as a barrier-free place. The world of aviation is not only a wonderful exhibition, but also one you can visit without restrictions. This makes it a best practice example. That’s why we are here at the airport today. We are glad to be here and value the airport as an organisation taking care of accessibility.”A large-scale construction project: apron renewal part 4Hannover Airport english2017-03-02 | After a construction period of 10-months, Terminal A is completely up and running again. From position one to three, 54,000 m² of the apron were modernized.
Andreas Hoffmann – Head of flight operations
“The aim of this measure was to remove and replace the 60-year old concrete, since the surface had lots of large cracks.”
Replace the old with the new. Not quite. Many materials were recycled. The old concrete was broken up.
Andreas Hoffmann – Head of flight operations
“It‘s right beneath us, serving as the base for the new concrete surface.”
In early May, construction ground to a halt. A World War II bomb was successfully defused by the bomb disposal team.
Andreas Hoffmann – Head of flight operations
“We certainly had differing weather conditions. We started out with lots of rain, which meant having to drain several surfaces we wanted to build on. That was quite a task.”
New drainage underneath, refurbished surfaces on top. Due to the aircraft, the apron bears a load of several tons. This called for a particularly strong concrete mix.
O-Ton Andreas Hoffmann – Head of flight operations
“Near the end of the construction project, which we had to extend by about a month, we ran into difficulties because the cold and sometimes rainy weather made it very hard to apply the markings.”
Slowly but surely, the apron markings were applied and the colored lines updated.
O-Ton Andreas Hoffmann – Head of flight operations
“In the future, we’ll be able to handle modern aircraft that are a bit larger, longer and wider and still adhere to prescribed safety distances.”
Everything is in motion here at the airport. The next large-scale project is just around the corner.
O-Ton Andreas Hoffmann – Head of flight operations
“Next year we’ll have another large civil engineering measure, namely to create a connection between two taxiways. Apron renewal measures will continue as well, but the next surfaces to be modernized are ten years younger than the ones we just renewed so we won’t tackle them for another five years.”

Thanks for the good reviews and your commentsA new rescue ladder vehicle for the airport fire brigade: Evacuation in emergenciesHannover Airport english2017-03-02 | The E5000 – a rescue ladder vehicle for the airport fire brigade
Stefan Mertens – Head of the airport fire brigade
“Our vehicle fleet has a new addition for the ICAO area, which involves all vehicles deployed for aircraft firefighting.”
ICAO stands for International Civil Aviation Association
Stefan Mertens – Head of the airport fire brigade
“This rescue ladder can be used for two things, for medical emergencies on board and for firefighting purposes. In the event of a fire, it enables us to gain access to the aircraft and perform tactical ventilation as well as to rescue passengers on board who cannot exit the aircraft without assistance.
We need tactical ventilation to force the smoke out of the aircraft. We can connect a ventilator to the top. This allows us to perform pressurized ventilation, i.e. mechanical smoke extraction, in the aircraft.
The use of rescue ladders is on the rise in Germany and around the globe because of the gap in operational requirements that they fill. This is a gap we can finally close.
The delivery of the rescue ladder by Rosenbauer is only the beginning. Now we have to get acquainted with the alarm and march out order and revised the standard rules of engagement for this vehicle and for aircraft firefighting in general. Then we will subject the vehicle to operational tests and deploy it in the framework of our fire simulation system.”

Thanks for the good reviews and your commentsThe airport garageHannover Airport english2016-11-10 | For everything from chain saws to de-icers
“Agricultural and construction machine technology, normal vehicle technology … sure, you often stand there thinking, how the heck is this supposed to work? Oh, now I’ve got it!”
The aircraft gararge at Hanover Airport – 1,600 vehicles come in for inspection here annually. Motor mechanic Sebastian and his 25 colleagues are responsible for making sure the airport vehicles are always ready for operation.
O-Ton Sebastian Jablonski – motor mechanic
“You don’t get such variety at just any workplace.”
Everything from aircraft handling machines like high-lifters and air-starters to airport fire engines and even ordinary chain saws are brought in for repairs and maintenance.
Such a variety often poses quite a challenge for the crew:
O-Ton Sebastian Jablonski – motor mechanic
“Sure, you often stand there thinking, how the heck is this supposed to work? But then you pull out a few manuals, take the time to collect the information you need and then things usually work out just fine.”
Or you ask a colleague. Working as a team makes everything easier.
O-Ton Sebastian Jablonski – motor mechanic
“We’ll loosen them first and then mount it up front. Okay?”
“Julian and I are a great team. That’s quite important, particularly if you are on call or it’s nighttime and everything has to run smoothly.”
Tasks are carried out in the garage opposite to the season – winter service vehicles in the summer, summer service vehicles in the winter. That’s why Sebastian and Julian are working on a snow plough right now.
O-Ton Sebastian Jablonski – motor mechanic
“Okay, so it’s hard work, but that’s what I enjoy. Oh, now I’ve got it!”
Thanks to their efforts, the snow sweeper will be ready for operation this coming winter. And just outside the door the next special vehicle awaits them, a de-icer in need of repair in this very special garage.Apron refurbishment – the last stageHannover Airport english2016-11-10 | 50,000 square meters of concrete for construction phase 1
The major construction project entailing apron refurbishment at Hanover Airport is entering the last stage of construction phase 1. The new apron is being covered with concrete. The surface should hold for 50 years even though it needs to carry enormous loads. For this reason a special formula is being used, which is applied by a 15-meter-wide concrete paver.
A major construction project – apron refurbishment
Construction period for phase 1 so far: 6 months
O-Ton Andreas Hoffmann – Head of airline operations
“We are currently preparing for the concreting work, which will start at the end of this month. We are presently building the gutters for the apron drainage.”
O-Ton Tilmann Starck – Head of civil engineering department
“The surface will be made of concrete, about 40 cm thick. Underneath we will have two different types of base courses, a hydraulically bound one and a frost protection layer about 40 cm thick, which is what we are standing on now.”
Late August: concreting work begins
Phase 1: 50,000 square meters of concrete
30 cubic meters of concrete
Aircraft create point loads of up to 90 tons.
O-Ton Andreas Hoffmann – Head of airline operations
“After the concreting work is done we will do the surfaces connecting the apron to the terminal. We will use asphalt for that. We hope to be done with the whole project by late October or mid-November.”

Thanks for the good reviews and your commentsNew: Lyon and MilanHannover Airport english2016-10-12 | New routes for flybe
Two new non-stop connections take off, with daily flights to Milan and Lyon provided by flybe!
Fly with flybe to Milan and Lyon. Any day of the week! Together with Europe’s largest regional airline, Hanover Airport is celebrating the opening of the two new routes.
Vincent Hodder - flybe Chief Revenue Officer
„Hannover was flybe’s first airport in Germany ten years ago in 2006. We currently serve the airport 4 times a day: 2 times from Manchester and 2 times from Birmingham. But this is a really, really important day for us in Hannover, because this is the first time, that flybe has launched two new services connecting two points in mainland Europe. This is a huge opportunity for flybe two grow in mainland Europe, and we’ve chosen Hannover as a first place, where we gonna make that commitment to start that European growth phase.”
Before the first flight to Lyon takes off, the well-attended press meeting shows the enormous significance which both destinations have for the Lower Saxony state capital and the region.
Carolin Ruh – Managing director of tourism marketing in Lower Saxony
„Of course it is highly relevant for Hanover as an exhibition venue. If you think of the LIGNA, the timber fair next year, I think that will give us a real boost from Italy. And I‘m sure that with Herrenhausen, with Hanover itself and with the entire region with all its beautiful countryside we’ll have a lot to offer tourists in the future, too. “
The flight to Southeastern France departs from Hanover at 10:45 a.m. It takes just under two hours to reach Lyon. Flights leave for Milan at 4:10 p.m. daily. They only take two hours as well. flybe uses its Bombardier Q400 fleet for all routes. The aircraft accommodate up to 78 passengers. Flights to Manchester, Birmingham, Milan and Lyon can be booked at www.flybe.com or at any travel agency.

Thanks for the good reviews and your commentsPower, heat, coldHannover Airport english2016-10-12 | No power without juice. Airports need electricity. And Hanover Airport produces most of what it needs itself. Up to 50% of its power consumption are supplied by two thermal power stations. The warmth they generate (about 107°C) is used in the winter for heating. In the summer it is converted into cold air by absorption and compression refrigeration machines and used for air-conditioning.

Thanks for the good reviews and your comments
“The thermal power stations operate on the principle of cogeneration. That means we have an engine fueled by gas which drives a generator, which in turn produces current. And the warmth generated by the engine is extracted using several heat exchangers and fed into our local heat network.”
In the winter we heat a large part of the airport with it, in particular the terminals and the Tui Fly Basis. And we use it to heat up water all year round. In the summer we use absorption refrigeration machines to convert heat into cold air to air-condition the terminals and other buildings.
I think everyone who works at the airport is really proud to be here. And if you see how things have changed and improved over the years, like with the new LED apron illumination and the new LED street lighting which is about to be installed, those kinds of things make you delight in being able to say we have taken another step forward. That really makes you proud.”Small wings and large snouts - Animal employees at the airportHannover Airport english2016-10-11 | Hanover Airport is sustainably and systematically committed to caring for nature and the environment – recruiting animal assistants to this end. Bees help out with bio-monitoring, sheep mow meadows and microorganisms filter wastewater from the runways. And then there is Darcy, one of 3 customs dogs who are employed at the airport sniffing out narcotics. Nothing escapes her nose and for her, work is great fun.
8,000 people work at Hanover Airport, but very few know how many animals are employed here.
Admittedly, these ones basically all have the same job, namely to produce honey. But the airport bees perform another really important task associated with so-called “bio-monitoring.” By analyzing their honey in the lab, you can detect any toxins entering the environment.
Martin Becker – Airport beekeeper “About 180,000 bees fly around here. We harvest their honey and send samples of it to the airport. Along with control samples, comparative probes. For 10 years or so the airport environment has been monitored in this way.”
Working WITH bees is no picnic. It’s better to play it safe and spray the bees to calm them down. If only for the sake of the camera woman.
The weekly check shows that everything is okay in the bee colony. Then the bees are off again to the meadows surrounding the airport.
Martin Becker – Airport beekeeper: “By mid-summer the bee season is almost over. The hives are harvested and the bees get fed for the winter season since they can‘t provide for that themselves: after all, when tem-peratures drop below 12 degrees, bees stop flying.”
Of course the big planes at the airport don’t take a winter break and for this reason, THEIR work just gets started in the cold season. The microorganisms in the soil filter sys-tem aren’t really animals but every living creature counts, doesn’t it? They filter the toxins out of the de-icing agents.
Heiner Fletemeyer – Department of Water Management Services “The wastewater is collected on the runways and sent through pipelines to us here at the soil filter unit, where it is stored in relatively large basins before being channeled into the actual filter bed, here where we are standing.”
This means daily fodder for the microorganisms inhabiting moist sand about one meter down inside the filter bed which convert the de-icing agents into carbon dioxide and wa-ter. The quality of the water returned to the environment is even cleaner than normal wastewater.
Green maintenance at the airport is usually the task of the road maintenance staff. But they already have their hands full, so an airport employee has come up with the clever idea to use animal mowers.
“The project really appealed to me – as a good way of keeping the grass short, particularly on slopes which are sometimes hard to access with machines. It also helps preserve the landscape and its biodiversity.”
50 sheep currently graze on the surface of the soil filter unit. And when they move to a new area, the sheepdog shows them the way.
But sheepdogs are intelligent animals and capable of more. Darcy is a customs dog at Hanover Airport. And a real workhorse:
“Darcy’s main task consists of searching the incoming and outgoing baggage, and the cargo, for narcotics.”
The German shepherd is 5 years old. She went through 3 years of training for the job.
“Dogs are really crucial if you’re searching for narcotics. With a dog, you can cover a much larger area. You can search an entire airplane along with all its baggage.”
To practice, a rucksack containing narcotics is hidden. Darcy picks up the scent and freezes once she has located it. As a customs dog she does 9-hour shifts like any other civil servant. Of course she needs a break now and then.
“It’s a lot of fun to work with the dog. It’s really mutual. And the dog lives with me and my family so we are a really good team.”
Although all animal employees are actually following their natural instincts, they are a true help for daily tasks at Hanover Airport. By the way, you can even buy the delicious honey made by the airport bees at the Erlebnis-Shop. In spring, it tastes like rapeseed and fruit blossoms, and in summer like wild flowers. But there is only a limited supply. Even bees need time off occasionally.

Thanks for the good reviews and your commentsArrival and parking at Hannover AirportHannover Airport english2016-06-28 | Which way of getting to the airport is best for me? Where can I park my car and what fares can I choose from? This film gives you all the information. If you need more, here’s where to find out all the essentials on arrival and parking. Hanover Airport wishes you a pleasant journey.Obama‘s Visit - Hello and goodbye, Mr. PresidentHannover Airport english2016-06-28 | Half a year before the end of his term of office, Barack Obama visited Hanover to talk politics with Angela Merkel and attend the opening of the Hanover Trade Fair. Air Force One landed at Hanover Airport, accompanied by immense safety precautions. The event was a real challenge for the airport team.
Everyone waited for Barack Obama to arrive in Hannover. The buses full of journalists arrived on the apron hours before due to the huge safety precautions required for the visit of the American president:
Marksmen positioned on the roofs.
Explosive detection dogs sniffing for bombs …
… and hundreds of security forces watching out to keep things safe.
Then Air Force One appeared in the sky. About to land in Hanover for the first time.
The landing of the president’s aircraft was not just a media event, but a huge organizational task for the airport team too.
O-Ton Sönke Jacobsen – Press spokesman for Hanover Airport
“In comparison to other public figures who have visited the airport over the years, like the Queen, the Dalai Lama, lots and lots of rock stars, soccer champions, etc., this was really a huge operation. Logistics were discussed for hours and hours weeks ahead of time and many more authorities were involved. The visit required much more apron space. Other aircraft were involved too, like the C17, the Boeing. The president’s fleet arrived days ahead. All of this had to be coordinated. It was really an unparalleled task.”
The situation on the apron was exceptional. 650 people accompanied the president. There were additional aircraft and a helicopter. Lots of onlookers found a spot to watch the whole spectacle, getting a good view of Air Force One, but the popular observation deck had to be closed for security reasons.
Despite extensive restricted zones around the airport, operations in the terminals carried on.
O-Ton Sönke Jacobsen – Press spokesman for Hanover Airport
“We had regular flight traffic all along. There was only one slight delay. We had agreed that nothing would happen ten minutes before and after the president landed and took off, but otherwise flight traffic went on as usual. The southern runway was closed, in part due to the trade fair traffic. Even large refurbishment measures were going on at the airport during the visit. So great praise to the team for managing all of that.”
Only 28 hours later, Barack Obama left again. During his departure, nothing was left to chance either.
Accompanied by helicopters, the presidential convoy reached the apron.
The president waved briefly before departing on his return flight to the USA.
Air Force One at Hanover Airport, a sight many are sure to remember.

Thanks for the good reviews and your commentsApron Refurbishment Part 2Hannover Airport english2016-06-28 | Apron refurbishment at Hanover Airport is in full swing.
During Phase 1, the old concrete surfaces were all removed. The drainage ditch which runs underneath the airport has already been realigned. Further sewage work is now in progress. After this is finished, new concrete surfaces will be put in, along with new markings.
One of the greatest initial challenges of setting up the construction site was that the crushing and mixing area was too soggy. And the crew encountered some patches of concrete which were difficult to remove.
Due to explosive ordnance disposal measures, part of the construction site was closed off for a week. An evaluation is yet to be made. So far we have seen no indication of any substantial impact. Thus completion of the project by the end of this year does not seem to be jeopardized. The oldest police helicopter on its last flight - Farewell to Phönix 96Hannover Airport english2016-06-28 | Farewell to Phönix 96. In a festive framework, Germany’s oldest police helicopter has now been taken out of service. Active as well as former members of the Lower Saxony police helicopter squadron bid farewell to the 37-year-old veteran.
O-Ton Christiana Berg – Police commissioner of Lower Saxony “It’s part of our police history. The time has come for this deserving veteran to retire. It makes you kind of wistful.”
From 1979 on, the D-HOPQ was on duty for the Lower Saxony Police together with the old D-HOPE, which has already been taken out of service. During this period, the two helicopters took off and landed more than 43,000 times, putting in almost 19,500 flying hours for Castor transports, flood management and a visit by the American president Barack Obama along with routine operations such as manhunts and searches by air. The two Aerospatiale Dauphins have been replaced by two EC 135 P2’s. They were put into service last year.
O-Ton Christiana Berg – Police commissioner of Lower Saxony “The new ones have quite different technical features, like air-conditioning. You barely feel any motion. It’s a great feeling to know we have new technology that really does the job.”
Time for lift-off – the last flight of Phönix 96
O-Ton Christiana Berg – Police commissioner of Lower Saxony “I flew with the new aircraft last August and with the old one just now and now that I know both I must say it’s like switching from a Mercedes to an old Mini Cooper”
O-Ton Raoul Hille – Managing Director of Hanover Airport “What an experience! Accompanying this last flight! Quite a special mission, if you ask me. Great weather, high spirits, a bit of melancholy. All very impressive. You see what the helicopter is capable of but also how beautiful Hanover and the airport look from above.”
Phönix 96 has landed here for the last time but the history of this helicopter is not over yet. Phönix 96 and 95 are to be auctioned off. So maybe they’ll fly again.Lots of new things at the World of AviationHannover Airport english2016-06-28 | Discover, explore and try it all out.

Thanks for the good reviews and your comments24-hour operationHannover Airport english2016-04-25 | Although the German air traffic act does not generally prohibit night flights at German airports, only a few are still open at night.
To ensure that Germany is not economically disadvantaged in an international comparison, competitive operating hours like those taken for granted on road and rail are absolutely necessary.
In the federal territory three airports ensure ‘round-the-clock accessibility,’ among them Hanover Airport in the North, as agreed by the five ministers of the North-German states.
This means that for the area Schleswig Holstein, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Hamburg, Bremen and Lower Saxony, Hanover Airport is the only commercial airport allowing for 24-hour operation. This is due to its central location and good infrastructure.
Prof. Dr. Lothar Hübl has already prepared several reports which show the enormous importance of the airport for employment in the region.
“Some 8,000 people are employed on the airport premises, and they in turn generate another 8,000 jobs in the region.”
Many internationally active enterprises are deliberately sited at the airport. Apart from that the city and the region even North Germany as a whole profits from it. Night mail for the North-German region is dispatched via Hanover. For the airlines, 24-hour operation means higher turnaround rates for their aircraft. This has positive effects on employment rates and results in many customer beneifts.
“For TUIfly the option of flying at night from Hanover is of key importance. It allows for optimal flight schedules, which enables Hanover to offer a wide range of flights and ultimately also favorable prices for customers. We also have our technical base in Hanover and thus the possibility of technical conveyance flights.”
In his report, Prof. Dr. Hübl was also able to calculate the significant loss of jobs should 24-hour operation came to an end.
“We can roughly summarize this: About 1,000 jobs would be lost on the premises, with approximately the same number being lost in the region. This means that 2,000 workplaces depend on night flight regulation in Hanover.”
In the end, everyone benefits from night flights. But it is also clear that air traffic generates some noise. For this reason, Hanover Airport has already invested over 21 million Euros in noise-reducing technology such as soundproof windows. A new fee table for the airlines intends to increase the incentive for deploying only the most quiet, most modern aircraft.
Also TUIfly is always taking new steps towards making aviation even quieter.
“Of course it is important for us to fly as quietly as possible to limit disturbances. We do this by employing state-of-the-art approach procedures and of course very, very quiet engines.”
In addition to jobs and advantages for travelers, 24-hour operation also allows for many indispensable services, which the whole region benefits from.
We serve as the base for the police helicopter squadron. ‘Christoph Lower Saxony’ is stationed here. We are the only night mail network in Northern Germany. We serve as an alternate airport for North Germany’s QRA aircraft. And as Airgate, we’ve been a small TNT hub for express freight since November 2014. All that wouldn’t be possible if we weren’t open 24 hours a day.”Airport Talk with Dr. Raoul Hille - The managing director in an exclusive interviewHannover Airport english2016-04-22 | In 2015, Hanover Airport really called attention to itself through a noticeable increase in air traffic. Hanover Airport is also anticipating a clear growth in passenger numbers for 2016 – provided the geopolitical conditions are stable enough to promote this. In addition to sales-oriented successes in passenger aviation and a sharp rise in cargo business, the airport has positioned itself very well in the real estate and industrial segment over the past few years. Now Hanover Airport is using its own resources to invest in important infrastructure measures. Despite these investments, Hanover Airport is one of the few German commercial airports able to make profits.
In Business Talk, managing director Dr. Raoul Hille talks about current topics at Hanover Airport.

Thanks for the good reviews and your comments ___________________Skylight’s 10th anniversary – the canteen at Hanover Airport is celebrating!Hannover Airport english2016-02-19 | Skylight is celebrating an anniversary! For ten years now, some 8,000 employees of Hanover Airport have enjoyed delicious meals here with a spectacular view.
The canteen with its special flair serves breakfast and lunch daily to everyone’s liking.
For master chef Thomas Weinhausen, fresh regional products and a wide variety of dishes are a matter of course.
O-Ton Thomas Weinhausen – Skylight’s master chef
“We always offer a vegetarian choice, an entree, which is usually a meat dish, on Fridays fish and also an airport snack, which is often a bit heartier, with meat on three or four days and vegetarian on the other..”
In addition to favorite classics like chops and curry sausage, the chefs are also open to creative recipes with an individual flair.
For the 10th anniversary, master chef Weinhausen has come up with something really special.
O-Ton Thomas Weinhausen – Skylight’s master chef “During the anniversary week we’ll serve the employees‘ favorite dishes, a different one every day. The employees have got to choose. We didn’t care whether the dishes were vegetarian or not, or whether pork would be served twice, for example. What counts is that the dishes go over well.”
Most of the guests frequently come to Skylight. So it’s easy to figure out what the favorites are!
O-Ton Vox-Props
“I really enjoy vegetarian!”
“Spaghetti I like!”
“Vanilla pudding! But they hardly ever do it!”
“Everything tastes good!”
“The food I’d say”
“I love pesto! Pesto’s really good. I make pesto at home too.”
A special highlight of the anniversary days – the cookery book containing the favorite recipes of regular guests will be raffled off at Skylight until January 22nd.
No luck at the raffle? Not to worry. The cookery book will be on sale at Hanover Airport when the anniversary days are over.
The Skylight has become a real institution at Hanover Airport. Good food in a great atmosphere really pays off.
The ongoing success of the restaurant makes Thomas Weinhausen optimistic about the future:
O-Ton Thomas Weinhausen – Skylight’s master chef “We see that our cuisine is a real hit and the number of guests is increasing all the time. That’s great for us!”
We hope things stay this way and we wish the Skylight all the best for the future!

Thanks for the good reviews and your comments ___________________Airlesen guest star: Gaby KösterHannover Airport english2016-02-19 | With her bubbly Cologne dialect, Gaby Köster is never at a loss for words! Well-known from the TV shows “7 Days, 7 Heads” and “Rita‘s World”, the Rheinland lady was a real institution in the German comedy scene in the early 2000’s.
At Hanover Airport the comedian is presenting her second book, “Die Chefin – Lady in Charge”. In unmistakable Köster-style, she describes the crazy life of a rock musician after suffering a stroke.
The Cologne author Gaby Köster has conceived Marie Sander - the protagonist in her novel - as her own alter ego, living life to the full. Despite the blows life has dealt out to her, she has not lost her sense of humour.
O-Ton Gaby Köster – entertainer and author “My left arm still doesn’t work. Actually it’s hibernating. I can still only walk with a stick.”
But I do now realize how practical it is to have two arms, or hands.
And it’s very annoying to always have to ask people to do things, especially since I was always so agile. I did everything myself, even renovating my flat.”
Gaby Köster has not lost her longing for the limelight. She will soon appear on the jury of the new casting show, “Die Puppenstars - Puppet Stars”.
O-Ton Gaby Köster – entertainer and author “Most of them are self-manufactured. I think that in today’s times that’s really interesting, - something children should see. There are other things besides electronic toys. Things without batteries. I think that’s great!“
Her fans can look forward to a comeback of the comedy queen. At Skylight, the 54-year-old has proven that she is still at home in the limelight:
O-Ton Gaby Köster – entertainer and author “Marie had to chuckle in light of all the drama which might be unrolling in the building across the street this very minute. Was her own fate really the worst? Then she thought, no matter how crappy your own life might be, there’s always some fat kid out there whose ice cream just fell to the ground before he got a chance to eat it.”
Her appearance at Hanover Airport has given Gaby Köster ichy feet. The Cologne comedian has already decided on her next destination!
O-Ton Gaby Köster – entertainer and author “Ibiza! Hopefully very soon! Yippie yeah!”
We wish Gaby Köster all the best for the future and of course ‘bon voyage!

Thanks for the good reviews and your comments ___________________Airlesen guest star: Tom WlaschihaHannover Airport english2016-02-19 | Do you know this man? Then you are presumably a fan of the series “Game of Thrones”, in which Tom Wlaschiha plays a Faceless Man. The role has really advanced his acting career.
O-Ton Tom Wlaschiha – Jahen H‘ghar “There was certainly that famous bit of luck which you need, but of course I also did a lot to make it happen. At some point I looked for an agency in England and went in for a normal casting. The first round was a self-take. That means you film yourself in a scene without knowing what it’s all about. And that did it.”
In the sold-out Skylight at Hanover Airport, the actor chatted about the series and life on the set. An audience of 150 are hoping to find out what will happen in Season 6.
O-Ton Tom Wlaschiha – Jahen H‘ghar
“I do know, of course, but I’m not going to tell you. If I say something, I will be the next one to be killed off in the series.”
Based on the books of George R.R. Martin, the series is all about power struggles, wars and complex characters.
O-Ton Tom Wlaschiha – Jahen H‘ghar “There are 100 Nordmen, maybe more. I couldn’t count them all. That’s about as many as Sir Henry has. Not including the bloody mummery, of course. I am a blacksmith‘s apprentice and one day I will be a master of the art of weapons.
