Understanding Frame Data in Tekken
updated
DISCLAIMER: Please take these scenarios with a grain of salt. This video is primarily for entertainment. The timings of these recordings make it seem easier than it really is to sidestep Azucena's WR+3,2. Only like 10% of them are practical in a real match. Sidestep into Duck is still the best way to go.

Now it's been 4 years since the last chapter =p (Guiness World Record for procrastination).
Funny thing is I actually finished recording the remaining 9 chapters a couple months ago. But when I began editing the audio in September I noticed a weird electronic humm in all the recordings. I've been experimenting w/ a new XLR mic (AKG P420) connected to a Tascam DR40X Recorder—and I suspect it might be because I connected the DR40X to my wall outlet instead of a computer. You can hear the electric humm in this video but I like how this recording came out so I didn't want to scrap it. Therefore I'm going to upload the 3rd chapter but redo the rest from scratch so there's no electronic hum. This means more work but I think in the long run it's the way to go. I still have a lot of things I need to improve in terms of narration/enunciation & audio post processing. We're gonna get there though =).

Having a good sense of Abare, of knowing when to challenge rational actions with rewarding risky play is what I feel separates the average player from advanced players. Being able to capitalize on those mashes and turn the momentum swing into comebacks is what makes you truly world class.
The X-Factor of calculating the risk/reward of your mashes allows you to dictate the pace of the match and create psychological openings that normally wouldn't exist.
Hopefully you guys enjoyed this type of video & can look at fighting games from a different perspective. Also remember to take what I say with a grain of salt--Statistics is the easiest thing to manipulate and abuse =).

The essential takeaway is that you should not judge a TA filler by just its pure damage alone. Take into account how it synergizes with the TA ender afterwards, and also factor in the context of how the combo began. For example, if you wall carry successfully and then Tag Assault, obviously you can't resplat/reorient so you should minimize the # of your TA fillers/enders to avoid a fast wall slump. Sometimes a single hit TA filler does less damage in the beginning, but it allows Law to do so much damage afterwards that it becomes worth it. Sometimes it's better to front load the combo with many hits in the beginning and end with a single move ender--it's all about context.
Another takeaway is that you can make any team work in Tag 2. You just have to experiment and find the right balance of hits in a combo and spread it evenly between both your assist character and point character.

I don't know why it's called The Book of 5 Rings honestly. It's easier to think of it as The Book of 5 Elements--since there are 5 chapters (Books) that refer to the 5 Elements of battle. The 5 Elements are: Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, and Void. These 5 chapters aren't mutually exclusive and build upon each other a lot.

Some Notes:
-I stopped Tag Assaulting so much in the middle phase of a match because for the past year or so my strategy has been to not give my opponent Rage/Tag Crash as freely. But I think it's ok to do it if the point character already has Rage, because then I can transfer Rage from the point to the anchor character. Gonna look into that more.
-While trying to find matches that didn't drag out so long, I saw that on average, a typical Tag 2 match takes 3-4 minutes (even longer if it's a 3-2 match and people don't optimize their combos). It made me realize that while TTT2 is fun for the player (because it resets to neutral a lot), it could be a little boring to spectators. Tekken 7 on the other hand is more exciting for the viewer, but it can feel more volatile & explosive for the player. Just an observation--not trying to be negative--both games are cool in their own ways.
-When I look through my replays after a couple of days, they're never as "Perfect" and "Clean" as when I first remember saving it. I think that's my Ego at play, because we tend to enjoy the things we did right and forget the moments that went wrong. Perhaps all matches worth playing will have those embarrassing mistakes at inopportune times. What's important is learn from it, and not try to forget it. On that note, that's why these days I never judge people when they make big mistakes in fighting games; because you never know what's going on in their brain at that particular moment in time. You do what you can at the end of the day.
-Also I need to start uploading more losses so I can analyze what I could be doing better.

Oh yea the wall slump also affects what enders can do unscaled damage. Like for example Feng and Michelle's ender usually do unscaled damage, but since I added on so many hits, the final hit of their enders do scaled damage instead.
Also very proud of getting Lili's Uf3+4,3+4 Matterhorn ender to work in that combo, didn't think it was gonna work =)

I recorded footage for this a really long time ago but never got around to completing it. That explains why the VF footage is still Final Showdown from 2012. But I wasn't as familiar with Fahkumram back then so perhaps it was a good thing I waited--there's a lot of similarities between Brad and Fahk.
One thing I've noticed rewatching these clips is that Steve's Df+2 can still lose to Julia's B+3 if it's spaced at max range. Even more reason to use B+3 wisely.

NOTES:
[Cross Rush] - The launcher that leads to a slow motion tag in. Usually done on the ground from a target combo or from inputting HP+HK. Requires no meter.
[Switch Cancel] - The tag in that has a white flash. Done by pressing MP+MK after normals or specials. Requires 1 bar of Cross Gauge.
-I recorded some of these clips kinda haphazardly so some of them had infinite meter. Just know that EX Moves + Switch Cancel use 1 bar ; Super Arts use 2 bars; Cross Arts use 3 bars.

6/12/2022: It's funny how many videos on my channel come about because of me messing around with the CPU. I was just using Lei in Treasure Battle when I did Razor Rush against Jin's 3+4 PC. 4 days worth of practice condensed into 1 minute & a half. Watching it back these combos look so effortless but lemme tell you--#7 and #8 were a nightmare. It's not so bad now that I understand the intricacies of how they work--but getting to that point was quite an experience. One good thing I will say is that my hands did not hurt afterwards since I was focused on clean & calm inputs (and I took a lot of breaks).
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I learned some important things regarding execution while making this video
1.) There is Good muscle memory & Bad muscle memory. It's very important to take breaks when you get stuck in a Bad muscle memory loop
2.) You need a combination of creative problem solving/adaptation & courage/confidence to get through these trials. I honestly think it's impossible to do it if you're panicking or nervous.
3.) Hard work & patience is not enough--you also need the right guidance.
I wouldn't have been able to complete this without Vesperarcade & Short Fuse's videos. An absolute timesaver.

*Going back to T6 hits different in 2021. I think this is the first time I've actually posted some T6 footage on my channel (if you don't count the PSP Hacking videos). It's pretty crazy how different T6 & Tag 2 are despite being essentially the same core game engine. An interesting history lesson for sure.
