In addition to our use of recyclable plastics, many of our products are made using recycled rubber. This recycling process starts and ends with TrafFix Devices. Our rubber recycling process uses vehicle tires that are no longer suitable for use due to wear or irreparable damage, such as punctures. Not only do our recycled rubber products keep over 12.5 million pounds of rubber waste out of our landfills each year, they also save our customers hundreds of dollars on up-front costs when purchasing traffic control products.
Waste tires are among the largest and most problematic sources of waste, due to the large volume produced, their durability, and the fact they contain a number of components that are environmentally hazardous. By some estimates, as many as 259 million tires are discarded annually. The same characteristics that make waste tires problematic also make them excellent sources of recycling.
Unfortunately, more than half of used tires are simply burned as fuel, which only adds to the environmental impact of these products. For example, in 2003 the United States used approximately 130 million scrap tires as fuel, up from 25.9 million in 1991. The EPA estimates that this "waste-to-energy" process uses about 45% of all tires produced.
Learn More: traffixdevices.com/stories traffixdevices.com/environmentFirst Responders and Mobile Attenuators — TrafFix StoriesTrafFix Devices2019-01-08 | "Without question, working the scene of a highway incident is the most dangerous thing we do. Fire is predictable, oncoming traffic is not." — Mark Radius, Grand Rapids Fire Department
In 2014, fire departments across the United States responded to an estimated 4.6 million incidents on roads and highways. More than 27% of these were along roads with speeds greater than 55 mph. In most cases, a single fire engine is all that protects these first responders from the dangers of errant vehicles and distracted drivers. At TrafFix Devices, we believe the fire engine should not be the first and only safety precaution first responders take. The Scorpion line of Truck Mounted and Trailer Attenuators provide additional notification to approaching vehicles and add an extra layer of protection between errant vehicles and first responders.
When impacted, the Scorpion's modular design crushes in progressive stages, which reduces the impact forces on the vehicles occupants. The Scorpion Trailer's Rear axle placement improves trailer stability and prevents the tail from "bottoming out" on driveways and uneven surfaces. The Scorpion II is equipped with omnivolt LED brake, directional, signal, and running lights to further enhance advanced warnings to drivers.
Both the Scorpion II Truck Mounted Attenuator and Scorpion II Trailer Attenuator are MASH Tested, Passed, and Eligible.
The Scorpion II TMA's open cartridge design reduces wind resistance and increases fuel efficiency when deployed on the job site and when traveling at highway speeds. Each energy absorbing cushion has an Aluminum honeycomb core that is enclosed by aluminum powder coated box module that provides maximum durability and longevity. The Scorpion II is equipped with omnivolt LED brake, directional, signal and running lights to further enhance advanced warnings to drivers.
When impacted, the Scorpion's modular design crushes in progressive stages, which reduces the impact forces on the vehicles occupants and results in lower repair costs and easy parts replacement. The curved side rails are made from corrosion resistant aluminum tubes and offer full width impact protection along the entire length of the Scorpion II by safely redirecting the impacting vehicle away from the deadly "coffin corners" at the rear of the truck. Unlike the Scorpion II, most other manufacturers Crash Attenuator models have little or no side-angle impact protection.
When fully deployed, the Scorpion II TMA is only 13' (4 m) in length, compared to other manufacturers units which are over 19' (5.8 m), thus giving the Scorpion II the shortest overall length of any MASH Eligible Truck Mounted Attenuator on the market. This shorter length reduces incidental impacts and repair costs while still providing the best safety and reliability you have come to expect from the Scorpion line of crash attenuators.
The Scorpion II is MASH Tested and Eligible with a minimum host truck vehicle weight of only 15,000 lbs (6,804 kg) with absolutely no upper weight limit. This is the widest range of host truck vehicle weights of any MASH Tested and Eligible Truck Mounted Attenuator currently on the market.
The Scorpion II TMA consists of strut and cartridge sections that are linked together on a support frame. The curved side rails are made from corrosion resistant aluminum tubes, which offer full width impact protection along the entire length of the unit. The side rails were designed to redirect errant vehicles away from the rear of the truck (coffin corner). Other manufacturers Crash Attenuator models have little or no side-angle impact protection.
The aluminum boxes are filled with a moisture proof, aluminum honeycomb material. The boxes, together with the curved side rails, absorb the energy from an impacting vehicle. The aluminum boxes are painted with a bright yellow powder-coated finish, for lasting durability.SLED - MASH TL3 End Treatment | TrafFix DevicesTrafFix Devices2017-06-06 | East of Indio, CA, along the I-10 freeway that connects Arizona and California, there is a highway construction project that uses 121 TL-3 SLED Attenuators to provide safe end treatments for the concrete barriers. Shadow vehicles should be trucks in a weight range of 16,000 lbs. to 20,000 lbs. and preferably 20,000 lbs., which is the weight of the truck tested for certification.
The TrafFix Scorpion TMA 10,000 is available in three basic models. • Model A is a TL-2 device tested at 70 km/hr. for use on trucks needing low speed protection or as a replacement cartridge for trucks already equipped with a TL-2 attenuator cartridge. • Model B is a TL-3 device tested at 100 km/hr for use on trucks needing high speed protection. The Model B uses a strut section in addition to the TL-2 cartridge section to achieve a higher speed device. The rear cartridge section has a hinged hydraulic coupling with fluid on both sides of the cylinders and solenoid valve lockouts. The rear cartridge can be raised to 90º where a scissors lock engages to lock the cartridge in the 90º position. An operators switch has an up and down button and the down button releases the lockout and lowers the cartridge. The release of the up or down button stops the cartridge at that angle. The Model B has a 10º tilt at the strut to allow clearance at driveways. During construction when the shadow vehicle truck has to drive in and out of sloped areas such as the drainage median or a driveway, the strut can be temporarily raised 10º to travel over this terrain. In the normal transport mode the rear cartridge is elevated and locked at 90º for theModel B. • The Model C uses a 90º hydraulic tilt attached to the strut. This allows the Model C system to raise the strut to the vertical position with the cartridge in a horizontal position over the top of the truck for the normal transport mode.
The Scorpion TMA 10,000 is mounted to a truck at a road clearance height of 12 ±1. In the deployed mode the system extends 13 to the rear of the truck.
The Scorpion TMA 10,000 consists of three basic components. A steel back-up is attached to the rear of the truck with an all-steel support structure. An all aluminum tube frame extends out 13 from the back-up. Inside the tube frame is a series of four aluminum boxes filled with energy absorbing aluminum honeycomb.
The back-up support structure uses all steel angles, plates, and C-channels welded using wire feed mig welding. The tube frame construction uses all aluminum tube and plate construction welded using wire feed mig welding on both sides of the tube/plate interface. The aluminum boxes use closed end sealing rivets for joining the sheet metal. The aluminum honeycomb is joined to the aluminum face sheets using oven cured epoxy resin.
The aluminum boxes are painted with a bright yellow powder-coated finish for lasting durability.
The Scorpion TMA has been tested and passed all optional and mandatory requirements suggested in the NCHRP-350 Report for TL-3 evaluation criteria, for speeds up to 62.5 mph (100 km/h) and is sold worldwide.

Shadow vehicles should be trucks in a weight range of 16,000 lbs. to 20,000 lbs. and preferably 20,000 lbs., which is the weight of the truck tested for certification.
The TrafFix Scorpion TMA 10,000 is available in three basic models. * Model A is a TL-2 device tested at 70 km/hr. for use on trucks needing low speed protection or as a replacement cartridge for trucks already equipped with a TL-2 attenuator cartridge. * Model B is a TL-3 device tested at 100 km/hr for use on trucks needing high speed protection. * The Model C uses a 90º hydraulic tilt attached to the strut.
Temporary Rumble Strip: Quickly and easily deployed or retrieved, used to alert approaching motorists to an upcoming change to the roadway.
Application: Three 46.5" long x 12" wide rumble strips easily fit together to form a 12' lane width. Three of these 12' long assemblies are spaced evenly on roadway to alert drivers to the upcoming work zone or safety checkpoint. Full 1" thickness x 12" width delivers better sensory awareness to the motorist.
Ease of Assembly: Assembles quickly with one person. Pliable rubber with jigsaw connection provides easy connection of strips. Can be assembled in-line or staggered for additional driver awareness. Bidirectional ramp eliminates orientation of the strip on the roadway.
Ease of Handling: Large handle accommodates a gloved hand for a balanced carry and drop. Jigsaw ends double as handles for easy positioning and dragging. One complete set of 3 sticks weighs only 72 lbs.
Disassembly and Transporting: Simply grab the end nearest the shoulder and drag off the road. Easily stack on the truck with the molded-in stacking lugs which stabilize the TrafFix Alert Rumble Strips during transport.
Color: The TrafFix Alert Rumble Strip comes in Black, Orange or White. The Orange or White strips can be mixed in with the Black strips to enhance long site distance visibility to the motorist. Custom colors also available.
Made of Recycled Rubber: Adheres to the roadway at all times, in all conditions and at all speeds. Made from durable, recycled rubber and designed to take heavy highway use. High tech grooves and rubber construction provides grip and adheres to the roadway.
-Made of UV stabilized, high density polyethylene, the linkable ADA Walls quickly and easily link together in 6 foot sections to allow the contractor flexibility in creating a safe pedestrian pathway.
-Weighing only 23 lbs., the durable double walled, non-flexible, yet lightweight design makes the ADA Wall easy to lift on and off the truck and easy to connect.
-The ten molded-in vertical windows reduce wind load, add strength and stability, and reduce overall weight of the ADA Wall. They also allow a guide dog to see what is on the other side of the wall.
-Two recessed areas measuring 8" wide x 53'' long on each side of the ADA Wall accommodate reflective sheeting.
-Standard colors are orange and white. Custom colors also available upon request.
-The TrafFix ADA Wall is also available with an optional leg set for non-ADA applications.
-Two Step-N-Deploy Legs Make Deployment Quick, Easy and Safe

SLED is designed to shield the end of all permanent and temporary portable barrier shapes including concrete, steel and plastic. SLED's unique design incorporates four internal steel cables which help envelop the impacting vehicle, reducing the possibility of secondary accidents. The SLED End Treatment does not require foundation anchor bolts to be attached to the road or bridge deck. The complete crash cushion can be installed quickly, with as little as one pick up truck and two workers on compacted dirt, gravel, decomposed granite, asphalt or concrete.
Each SLED module is manufactured from a high visibility yellow polyethylene that is UV stabilized to minimize degradation. It is designed to deform and rupture on impact, absorbing the energy of the errant vehicle. SLED has the most versatile transition for shielding all permanent and temporary portable barriers. The combination of hinging and contouring, allows the transition panels of the SLED End Treatment to be attached to narrow, wide or other profile shapes with either converging, or diverging angles, up to 10 degrees.
