I had just 4 days to cycle nearly 400km across Jordan. As I raced south, the entire country was gripped by protests and unrest.

Roads were blocked. Truck drivers were on strike. And in some areas, the situation was turning violent. At the same time, my drone had been confiscated by Jordanian customs, and if I didn’t make it to the Saudi border in time, I’d lose it for good.
So with time running out, I set off to pedal the Jordan Valley alone with two goals:
Recover my drone.
And understand Jordan’s relationship with protest, stability, and its monarchy, the Hashemites.

This is the story of my 2022/23 cycle across Jordan during unrest, navigating blocked roads, military stops, and long desert stretches. I’d travel from the busy streets of Amman to the shores of the Dead Sea, and down to the remote desert roads leading to Aqaba and the Saudi border, through a country often described as an island of stability in the Middle East, even during moments of tension.
