In addition to discussing some of the key features of the Caravan, we took it for a flight to the backcountry of Idaho. Indian Creek USFS airstrip in the Frank Church Wilderness area is a classic back country strip and a great spot to showcase how comfortable the Caravan is in a wide range of environments.

The Pacific Ocean colors were brilliant, skies were blue, the costal hills and Santa Lucia Mountains were just beginning to green up from a recent rain, the waves and beaches, Hearst Castle, Morro Bay and Morro Rock, the Pismo Beach pier, and the Oceano sand dunes are among some of the stunning footage of the California coastline.
From Grand to "Epic", this is a Raisbeck Cessna story. I share my experience flying this modified Grand Caravan and even share specific flight test results in terms of TAS increases, fuel flow and EGT reductions.
Hal Chrisman, President at Raisbeck, joins me for a short interview at the end of the video.
Welcome to the High Sierra Fly-In and the World Championship of STOL Drag racing from the perspective of the SLOWEST airplane in the contest. I raced my 1946 Cessna 140 against some incredibly talented pilots, flying a variety of cool planes. Some powerful and fast, others vintage similar to my own (although I think mine with the C85 Continental had the smallest motor in the group).
Huge thank you to Kevin Quinn as the organizer and founder, as well as Kyle Bushman our pitboss, Johnny Walker, Bryan Forsythe, Juan Browne on teh mic, the air controllers, line judges, and so many others. What an incredible experience.
Also, huge shoutout to Sky Cowboy Supply Company, LLC for the awesome helmet. Adapted for use in aviation, they modify Team Wendy helmets for use with aviation Bose A20 headsets. Winning combination!
Videos and photos are a combination of GoPro 7 and 8 mounted on the plane, iPhone footage from my son William, photos by Emmet Welch, Annie Vogel, Wayne Lederer, and myself.

Originally planning for Twin Falls for an overnight, the flying was going well so we decided to push on for Elko. As temps rose along with Density Altitude, we made an en route decision to drop into Jackpot. Fun little dot on the map with food, hotel rooms, and a pool!
The music I chose for this video is two tracks, both by Sapajou. They have repetitive themes which seemed to fit the terrain and dreary skies we encountered.

Caleb and I were thankful for some clear air in eastern Montana for some playtime on the Yellowstone River - gravel bars for days and so much fun!!
We finally ended in Bozeman, MT where we were greeted by longtime family friends, the Williams, for another wonderful rest day. Dessert included :-)
Thank you Nathan for the ice cream, Chloe for the cookies, and Yvonne and girls for all the hospitality.
Beautiful afternoon with cumulous clouds, but a little warm and bumpy. Smoke from the wildfires in Canada and western US filled the skies by the time we got to the Red River Valley.
We spent time with my brother Richard's family in Grand Forks. Saw his new store location for See Dick Run (best running shoe store in the world BTW) and grabbed pizza and beers from Rhombus Guys in downtown GF, hit up the Red Pepper, Grand Forks Central (my alma mater), UND Aerospace, the Ralph Engelstad Arena (home of the UND Fighting Sioux hockey team), and the Blue Moose, and some other favorites before heading further west.
Follow along as we walk through the Fisk Arrival. If you haven't flown into Oshkosh Airventure before, and you're thinking about it, or have been intimidated by it, watch for the visual waypoints in our video. The updated NOTAM instructions with added waypoints really make for an orderly approach.
Departing Whiteside County airport in Illinois, we arrived when the Endeavor Bridge waypoint was active. You'll get to see the flight from Endeavor Bridge to Puckaway Lake to Green Lake, including the Green Lake hold, then on to Ripon, past Rush Lake to Fisk, and arrival to OSH via Fisk Avenue - "CLEARED TO LAND 36L, LAND ON THE YELLOW DOT"
Some fun formation flying with Jordan and his Pipistrol, Lee and his Scout, Cory and his Carbon Cub, and Eric with his RV. Bonus round was watching an awesome P51 Mustang and a Lockheed Electra at the show.
Watch Cory Robin's video of the same flight for some different views of the formation flying, even better music and editing, and some great STOL Demo shots: youtu.be/dVK_YX3iklo?t=76
William and I hung back for a bit with our friends Lee and Steph while the rest of the group went on ahead to Morey Field in Madison. The four of us, with Lee and Steph in their beautiful American Champion Scout, and us in our Cessna 140, enjoyed a thrilling flight up the Wisconsin River, where we met up with the the rest of the crew at C29 for Capital Flight's "Rock the Ramp" pre-Oshkosh party.
We are so thankful for all these incredible friends and the aviation camaraderie, and for Matt and Jade and their dedication to the local community in Madison, to the firefighters and veterans and local businesses, and of coarse to the general aviation community.
South Dakota and Minnesota were beautiful country to fly over, with Badlands, farmland, windmills, rivers... and lots of time for play and flying in loose formation.
Mountains of Utah, and the most amazing surprise with herds of wild horses!! Landing on a beach somewhere in Wyoming... passing by Crazy Horse and Mt Rushmore just behind a thunderstorm... we'll call that a pretty great day of flying.
Day one took us from California, over Nevada, and into Utah where we stayed over night to meet up with more flying friends for Day 2.
A quick stop into the Bonneville Salt Flats turned into an impromptu meeting and film session with pop R&B artist Krish youtube.com/channel/UCprRS6x-BGYNh-zMCcg9pAw who was working on a music video for his latest hit. Super cool guy and the film crew were awesome. Check out his tunes!
Starting in Stanley, ID after an awesome breakfast, I flew down to Nampa, ID.
3:34 There I had a chance to visit with some of my sweet friends at Mission Aviation Fellowship, MAF, and show you their latest Grand Caravan destined for the Democratic Republic of the Congo, DRC.
After an overnight in Nampa, I left just prior to sunrise, southbound across the Owyhee Desert, with a short run down the Owyhee River Canyon 5:54 - super awesome!
6:44 Flew over a herd of wild horses! So beautiful to see them in the wild!!! and on down to Winnemucca for fuel.
8:44 Cruise over the Black Rock Desert before flying past 9:30 Pyramid Lake.
10:51 Dead Cow Lakebed and then...
sheer thrills with Kevin "Stolpilot" Quinn and Brad "raddadbrad" Lund up on Outlook - 11:03
More Dead Cow after landing on Outlook for the first time, then headed on home over the Sierra Nevada Mountains. So sad to see how much is burned up in the Middle Fork of the Feather River Canyon, and to see how low Lake Oroville is this early. The reconstruction of the Lake Oroville spillway is impressive though!
The first part is time spent with the Grand Caravan EX while shooting a Caravan Review for jetAVIVA, where we spent time in the Frank Church Wilderness and flew into the Indian Creek USFS airstrip.
The second part, starting at 4:14, is RAW footage of my departure from Salmon in the Cessna 140, flying up the Salmon River to Stanley, ID for breakfast on the first leg of my journey back home. I edited it down from about an hour and a half to 30 minutes - really a beautiful early morning flight. Ending with the view of the Sawtooth Mountains as a backdrop to the Stanley airstrip, I'm completely in love with the Idaho backcountry flying!!
Part 1 of this series is mostly in time-lapse, but take heart, for those of you who despise background music (I did my best to choose some corny filler music), soon you'll hear some C-85 and PT6A noise!!
I'm headed up to Salmon to shoot a Caravan Review video using my friend Nate's beautiful Grand Caravan EX.
The Sacramento River habitat is truly remarkable, and I can't help but revel in the beauty of God's handiwork in his creation.
I love this kind of flying as I stretch my skill level and build confidence in low speed control (particularly challenging in high density altitudes with a C-85 powered Cessna 140) and overall precision.
Kevin and Brad are flying some incredible Carbon Cubs, one modified FX2 and the other a nearly new FX3.
Ricky and Jason headed out early with Phenix to find a spot to anchor and start chumming for YellowTail. Alan and Jeremy from Cessna's demo flight department and I picked up Matt and his awesome kids, along with Nicole, to head out to Matt's boat for a day of play and sunshine.
By this point in the summer, August of 2019, I had been touring with this incredible Cessna Grand Caravan EX on Wipaire 8750 amphibian floats, but had mostly been up north. The tops of my feet were burned by the end of the day, and I quickly adopted a new motto: "If the tops of your feet aren't tan, you aren't living right."
Alan and Jeremy launched again to run back to Long Beach to pick up Sydney, who's first time experiencing a Caravan was not too shabby. We had an awesome afternoon swimming with the sea lions in the surprisingly warm waters on the protected side of Catalina Island.
Credit to Ricky Birks for much of the great photography; this is a blend of his good stuff and my amateur iPhone shots.
After a demo flight in the Grand Caravan EX on Wipaire 8750 amphibian floats, Ron offered to take Alan, Jon and me up for a quick tour of Otter Lake in Adventure Destination's 1962 Beaver, C-FORC on floats.
You'll notice at the end of the video I'm flying it, and barely using two fingers. The Beaver is an incredibly docile plane and easy to control. You'll also notice some pretty big smiles!
And catch a glimpse of some historic bush planes on floats, Buffalo Joe's 1946 Norseman and Warren Wright's 1929 Bellanca - both truly remarkable aircraft!
Best of all, we head out to Nonacho Lake fishing lodge with the Carter family and friend Alex to spend time in a place of silence, solitude, and peace. And to catch some incredible lake trout!! Myles, Dean, and Alex are all incredible fishermen and gave Alan, John and myself a great time on the lake.
The Cessna Grand Caravan EX, outfitted with WipAire 8750 Amphibian floats, gives best in class payload, speed, and range. There is not another float plane like it. With a useful load over 3000 pounds, this giant bushplane can comfortable cruise at speeds of 160 KIAS and greater. At 10,000 and torque on the 867 SHP Pratt & Whitney PT6A-140 engine rolled back to give a cruise speed of 150 KIAS, we were burning barely over 300 lbs/hr of Jet-A. That's half the fuel of a de Havilland Twin Otter with the same payload and still significantly faster.
You just can't match the performance of this plane for hauling passengers and supplies out to remote fishing lodges! Great job on this aircraft Textron Aviation and WipAire!
Keeping a plane polished in any environment is a challenge; I can't imaging the work up in Alaska! But up in the 49th State every pound counts, so a lot of owners strip the paint and much of the interior to preserve as much useful load as possible.
I only wish I could have heard her fire up! That Pratt & Whitney Wasp R-985 has such a beautiful sound.
So far, there are two major downsides to the time warp that I see: 1) so much detail is missed, like the wild life along the river, and 2) no audio of the flight, so you don't get to here the propeller and Continental C-85 motor.
Let me know in the comments what you like or don't like about the time warp format. I'm still learning! :)
FYI - I typically fly 800-1000 feet AGL over the fields during rice planting season; there are lots of crop dusters out planting rice and they usually fly from ground level to about 500 feet.
Flying across the rice fields in the spring, I typically fly 800 - 1000 feet, because the crop dusters are busy seeding rice and typically fly from the surface to about 500 feet.
For the portrait haters, this is formatted specifically for YouTube SHORTS for viewers on their mobile devices. Landscape format: youtu.be/hW2LNurUNPU
And for the music haters: I'm experimenting with the GoPro time warp setting, so there is no audio recording, no Cessna 140 music in the background. So, music it is! :)
We are flying our 1946 Cessna 140, N76075. It's an aluminum frame plane with aluminum fuselage skins, aluminum tail feathers, aluminum flight controls, and fabric covered wing. It's powered with a Continental C85 engine, still the original case, but upgraded with O-200 cylinders.
You might notice a handful of Grumman Ag Cat crop duster aircraft on our left as we are taxiing out. They are spreading rice for planting season. You can see some fields being flooded in between the airport and the Buttes, and at the end of the video, you'll hear a couple of the Pratt and Whitney WASP 1340 round engines as they take off. One of my favorite sounds in the world! My first aviation job was working for a crop duster in the Red River Valley back in the 90s, and he operated three Ag Cats with 1340s.

With stops at places like Furnace Creek, the lowest elevation airport in North America at 210 feet below sea level, down the dry lakebed of Death Valley, and across into Arizona. We'll fly over the Lake Havasu, take a trip down Route 66, across the Mohave Desert, over Tehachapi pass, and back into the Central Valley of California for a sunset finale.
The Cessna Model 208B by Textron Aviation, after it's most recent updates, namely the 867 SHP Pratt & Whitney Canada PTA-140 turbine engine, make this plane dynamite for going to remote lakes and rivers! Taking off from a private FBO, and heading directly to a remote fishing lodge = WOW!!
This is the trip that inspired me to put my instrument "IFR" pilot training on hold and pursue my Seaplane Pilot rating first. Combining a love of water and flying was one of the funnest experiences of my life!
Post in the comments: Nat King Cole or Chuck Berry? Chris Ledoux or Rascal Flatts?
Life is a Highway, and it kicks on Route 66!
Get your kicks!

Footage isn't great, but I hope you're inspired.
Terry Hayes is a legend, a first class instructor. Her and Jim McGurk at Foothill Seaplanes made the entire experience wonderful. Took about three days from start to finish.
While we originated from a private farm pond in Calaveras County, California, most of my training was completed on New Hogan Lake and New Melones Lake. Beautiful reservoirs in Gold Country, the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

The takeoff from over 5600' field elevation at 7800 pounds was a breeze. Gross weight of the Grand Caravan is just over 8800 pounds, giving a typical useful load of 3400 to 3500 pounds. Imagine the fishing, camping, hunting gear, or other supplies you can haul out with that kind of useful load!
This particular Caravan was configured with 9 passenger seats and 2 crew. TKS anti-ice equipped with a belly cargo pod, the plane is extremely versatile.
Pratt and Whitney Canada PT6A-140 puts out 867 SHP and at typical cruise burns less than 400 pounds per hour.
Garmin G1000 NXi Phase 2 gives this workhorse the latest in avionics technology, including Synthetic Vision, ADS-b out & in, Flight Stream to port your flight plans into the system via bluetooth from your phone or tablet (and music too!).
FedEx generously donated the use of their hangar and ramp space. Notice the "Heavy" Fedex and UPS aircraft, Boeing 747, McDonald Douglas DC10/MD11. The Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is one of the busiest cargo hubs in the world!
The Alaska Airmen's Association hosts this annual event, free of charge to visitors, celebrating the 49th State's love for and dependence upon aviation.
You'll even get a sneak peak at the Kodiak on Aerocet Amphibious Floats.

The Caravan has a history of difficulty in icing conditions; that was before TKS replaced the boots, and before the 867SHP PT6A-140 engine replaced the 675SHP PT6A-114A engine. This new combination elevates the Caravan IMC comfort level significantly - a real game changer!
The TKS system can be run in three modes: NORM, HIGH, and MAX FLOW. Operation in this video is in the NORM mode, which alternates panel flow. HIGH mode operates all panels continuously, and MAX FLOW operates both pump to deliver a surge of fluid to all panes. More info on the TKS system and its operation can be found here: youtu.be/p68nQz45i5E
Factory demonstrator 208B with TKS anti-ice system and the beefy 867SHP PT6A-140 engine handled the icing, no problem!v
