Xmas 1987 - [Atari ST] Christmas MIDI music demo from 1987
updated
I could not find any video footage of PaCifiST here at Youtube so i decided to make one myself just to show how it was back then and how PaCifiST looked like, not really good emulation by todays standards but it was a big step for Atari ST emulation on PC.
I did use "DOSBox Staging" (ver 0.81.0) when doing the video... so this is in fact emulation in emulation😉 The PaCifiST author did recommend a Pentium 133mhz to get full ST speed in the emulator.
DOSBox was configured with:
- core = dynamic
- cputype = pentium_slow
- cycles = 500000
I used PaCifiST version 0.48 wich was the second last version of it released in 1998.
I am playing some random ST games from compilation menus (cracked games😉).
This Llamatron version had the filename "2_2_91.prg" so i guess the date for it would be "2 february 1991"?... for comparison so was version 1.0 released 20 march 1991.
It's an interesting version wich has stuff the final version did not have... like for example music at the title screen and a Star Wars sample at game over :) Also it is much more difficult than version 1.0... i had to play with the droid helper just to get past wave 3😅
Jeff Minter also posted the full source code for Llamatron. (Version 1.0 i belive?).
I used the Atari ST emulator Steem SSE when doing this video ;)
Music composed by Robert Holmes and the game was released in 1993 by Sierra On-Line.
You can buy the full soundtrack and game from here:

I bought the game for Nintendo Switch and it was an great experience... a very special game.

I do like Pengo type of games... (you know push the block games) and Iceblox Plus is no exception; very fun to play :) Actually i think stage 16 is the last stage so it was too bad i never completed it.

It's a quite fun game that should be played with other people, in this video did i had to use computer controlled opponents though as i had no one to play with.

This video is nothing special... it just shows a nice cracktro :) It was a long time since i uploaded anything to youtube so i thought i make this one as i had my ST running and was checking some old demos/intros.

I make two failed attempts at the end boss and that added an extra 15 minutes to the video wich BTW is unedited, if annotations would still be working on Youtube so would i had made a link that pops up to skip that part... i don't know what to do now... maybe using cards? You can skip part between 01:02:20 to 01:18:15
Targhan is quite a good game, it has really beautiful graphics with lovely animations and breathtaking scenery... most is of course gone when playing in high resolution monochrome mode of the Atari ST ;)
Quite long loading times since i use an ST with 1 mb so does it load most of the game except the end part in one go, it becomes a problem at the end since i travel back and forth between the areas to save the game, i should probably used an 512kb ST instead.

The main reason i recorded it was to make a reference for emulator programmers to use when trying emulating the game. I managed to play to map 5-2 and gave up after playing the level for about 20 minutes :/
This video was uploaded almost 3 years ago exactly today but i have kept the video private listed since it was a bit embarrassing not to be able to coin feed through it :)
The sound and video is not syncing perfectly though because of my recording setup.

The second song i present in my "my favourite C64 game music" series. And this is actually is my number one favourite C-64 game music song, te msuic does not really have a catchy melody that instantly gets stuck in your head and you go around and whistle it all days long... it has a kind of hypnotic rythmic percussion that i like and sweeping synthlead voice that i also really like, i remember i used to sit and listen to this and watching the snowing title screen and dream away :)
This was recorded using a 6581R4AR wich has a quite heavy filter and i am not sure it really sound like Mark intended when doing the music but this is how i rememeber the music and for this is nostalgia :)
No gameplay in the video, just title screen.
It was recorded from a cracked copy of the game since it was the easiest way to do it but i miss the loading screen, i also used an "1541 Ultimate 2" a floppydrive emulator.
I have the original game but it is on tape only, one of the last C64 games i bought before i decided to spend more time on Atari ST and PC.
Thanks to Benj Edwards for letting me use his cozy C-64 setup photo :)

I don't know if it because it is a demo but the the game crashed at the end of the video i think... or if there was a time limit in the demo causing the return to GEM. I'll guess i wait for the final release until i play it again :) Very fun game though.

Now all stages are playable even if i only get to stage 6 without cheat, but i play on easy difficulty or else i would probably not even get to stage 3 :)
This version is not finished and it is most noticable on the battleship level, still playable though.

This is the first video in a series where i present my favourite C64 game music and it will be based on nostalgia mostly :)
"Judge Dredd - Main Theme" (as i call it) music is quite short and is looped many times for over 9 minutes and after that so have i added a bonus song also from Dredd and it is the music that plays in the "Undercity" area and is not really particulary good (IMHO) and is even shorter than the main theme but it has a cool filtered sound and is of course very nostalgic to me :)
And a bit about the game... I never figured out how to play the game properly back in the 1980´s even if i have the original (Mastertronic release) and now when i can understand english much better to read the manual so does i not care since the game is really boring ;)
The video footage is recorded from a real C-64 and so is the music... SID version is 6581R4AR... that's my childhood SID and is still working perfectly as in my youth :)
Thanks to Benj Edwards for letting me use his great C-64 setup photo :)
http://www.vintagecomputing.com
The music is recorded from the game and not from a SID rip.
It is a quite difficult game and level design seems to be different from the Amiga version... like smaller platforms in the ST version.
The flick screen "scolling" is one of the most annoying i ever seen in an ST game and that was probably the reason it never was released in 1990 (just guessing though) :)
Complete title music can be heard at the end of the video.

It was not easy to figure out what to say especially during the second half of the gameplay footage, i did also forgot many things i first had planned on saying... maybe i should write down some helping words if i do any video like this again :)
Actually so is the first part when you see me holding the box recorded over half a year ago and i mention "review" but as you see this was not a review at all... i have since then skipped the review plans and just showed the game a little.
The first level was very difficult and i never expected to reach the second level when doing this video so i was a bit unprepared, a fun thing was that the second level was much easier that the first one and if i hadn't been completely blind and missed the boss so could i very well had completed level 2 also, i really had no idea the levels was looping.
This is just a short video when i try to play Strider with a gamepad, i previously used the keyboard. The game did only support the Xbox 360 controller so i had to download a 360 controller emulator to be able to use my Logitech gamepad with Strider, it was no problem and works great :)
The game is very good, it feels easier than the original from 1989... although i have not got so far in the game yet so it might get more difficult later on, i play on "easy" difficulty and it seems to match my arcade platform action game skill just fine :)
Video recorded using shadowplay on my gaming laptop Asus G750JM with Win10 installed, i have the laptop connected to my TV when playing Strider.
In this video so do i play all the example songs that came with the software package.
It do output stereo sound and the cartridge is AFAIK built around the Yamaha YM2413 (OPLL) sound chip and the stereo effect is because the YM2413 can output "melody voices" and "rhythm voices" seperate on left or right channel.
The soundchip is not labeled YM2413 in the cartridge so i wonder if it is a bootleg chip or just a "professional" version of the YM2413? It is labeled "MS1824", "2423B-Y".

This is what happens in this video: I have returned to "Taymurian Wilds" that used to be too difficult for me but since i leveled up so is it a bit more easy (i play on normal difficulty), i had cleared most of this area before making the video and then i enter the "Moon Wilds" and explore it fully and enter the "Hidden Fortress" and exlpore it fully also and then i enter the "Main Hall" and there is a big boss fight (look at that framerate) that i almost did not survive but i managed it :)
After that so do i enter Dyra 'Tyr but only explore a few minutes before ending the video.

Herei swhat happens in this video... i first find the griffin egg and after that so does i enter the "Border Camp" and it trigger chapter 3 and there is much dialogue there. After that so do i make a try at entering the "Taymurian Wilds" but it turns out to be too difficult so i return to "Outlands" and continue exploring that area a bit more and find the "Shrine" where the reaper sword is, after that so do i enter the "Ruins" and find and crafting anvil and decides to try it out and here i found a game bug when after i crafted an item so did i not put it in the inventory area but the quickbar and then the game crashes :/
Another bug is the fact that some weapon and armour icons in the inventory is missing but the item are still there and i could equip them, this bug was caused by recent big update of the game and by mistake had the developers included weapons and armour that was supposed to be included in the next part of the game (book 2), they made a quick update that removed thos weapons and armour but i managedto play a while with the Book 2 weapons and i liked the "poor chiting axe" with 400% attack speed and 14% life steal and 60% life steal with critical hit :)

The game is also patched to work from HD by PP. It can be downloaded from here: http://atari.8bitchip.info/SCRSH/cannonf.html
You can change the title music and the ingame music by replacing the audio files and thats what i have done... and i picked some music that people might consider "weird" ;)
And now what i think of the game... the really odd scrolling was incredible annoying, it scrolls smooth vertically but the horisontal scrolling is more flipping than scrolling and the combination was too much for me, i will not play this game again unless it is to test new music tracks :)

Yet another video i used a stereo modified ST and the music did sound quite good i think despite not being made with stereo in mind.
This is a very difficult game and i have never been good at it, this time i only get to stage 2. I have reached stage 4 at best though. I used the Atari "Power Pack" bundle copy of R-Type and it comes on only one disk and the original release came on two disks and on that release so could you type in a cheat when asked to switch disks... this Power Pack copy did obviously not give that option and i am not aware of any other cheats for R-Type.
I don't think R-Type for the ST is as bad as many say it is, and it is quite playable and unfortunatly just as difficult as the arcade original.
A bit long loading times maybe.

It is a very well made game... no slowdowns even with the two players option. The graphics lack the arcade originals more bright colour palette though, i guess it didn't work with the limited 16 colours of the ST?
The music is excellent and it is not exact conversions of the arcade music but slightly remixed.
To be able to show the whole game so did i use a modified copy of the game with "unlimited lives" option, disk image dowloaded from following page: http://atari.8bitchip.info/ASTGA/G/geminiw.php
And since i used an modified game copy so did i play it on my stereo modified Atari ST ;)
Without cheat so do i usually get to round 5, this game is very difficult and the two last levels (6 and 7) have narrow passages with lot's of enemies wich are almost impossible avoid... you need much of luck in those levels.

In this video so do i show the stereo circuit for the ST i recently made and as i said in the video so was it GadgetUK that made me find the Neo Geo stereo mod that works for the ST also. Here is a link to his Atari ST stereo mod video: youtube.com/watch?v=B9mjbMEZLRE
Here is the schematics: http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/console/downloads/MV-1FX%20Stereo%20Mod.pdf
Don't forget to add those three resistors i show in the video, they are connected to ground and each go a soundchannel of the mod.
No Atari ST game music were made with stereo in mind AFAIK, but it could be possible that if the composer also worked on the Amstrad CPC version of the game then the music could possibly be optimized for stereo since the Amstrad has a compatible soundchip and it is wired to stereo.
This is showing really early in the game and i have not learned how the game works yet, but i think it is a quite fun game... the voice acting is extremly bad though :)
For fun so did i in the end of the video record around 30 minutes of the title screen showing the day and night cycle :)
This video is mostly for my own memories, something i can look back to in the future and remember the days i played Two Worlds :) So don't expect any expert gameplay.

The PAL Gamecube output interlaced RGB and i have no idea how to process that kind of video signal properly, it just look blurry and i think the Gamecube already adds a blurring filter to the image just like the N64.
At least the game supports widescreen :)
I need to check some walkthrough on how to reach the Krazoa Palace.
My capturing software lost the signal at around 05:26 so there is a little time skip there. And the image is a bit too bright i will adjust that if i record more Gamecube stuff.

A too difficult game for me... but that is not uncommon for me when it comes to shoot'em up games :)
This cracked copy came with the Amiga 1200 i bought some years ago and i bought it from the guy who did the music for Ziriax (Tomas Dahlgren AKA Uncle Tom) and i guess he sometimes wanted to play the game he once did the music to but never had any original of it :)
Unfortunatly so does the game use an older protracker replayer than the one Tomas used so the music in the game tend to sound a bit detuned.
