Folding the Manifold: Philosophy as a Practice of Perception - Adam Robert Oct. 27th 2019 ArchetypalView 2019-11-11 | The philosopher Pierre Hadot famously advocated for an image of philosophy as a way of life. For Hadot, philosophical insight emerges in the context of spiritual exercises he collected under the term askēsis. Examples of askēsis include contemplative prayer, meditation, fasting, examinations of conscience, dialectics, discursive reasoning, physical training, aesthetics, and visionary experience. It was Hadot’s emphasis on spiritual exercise that led him to affirm Henri Bergson’s definition of philosophy as a transformation of perception. But in what does this transformation consist? More specifically, what is the relation between askēsis and perception? Using resources from phenomenology and transcendental philosophy, I will show that askēsis acts upon what phenomenologists call the intentional structure of perception, and that what is shaped through such practice is the manifold of sensibility described in transcendental philosophy. What emerges from this discussion is a view of perception as itself a type of practice, where attention is an act of shaping the arrangement of consciousness. Philosophy in a Time of Crisis - Jacob Sherman, ArchetypalView 2019-07-05 | The language of crisis is everywhere: democratic, financial, social, cultural, technological, and of course ecological. The world has always known its traumas, but arguably the crises of our time reflect more than the normal ups and downs of history. We find ourselves rather in an age of meta-crisis, one in which many of our basic assumptions and ways of being are revealed to be fundamentally at odds with reality itself.Nowhere is this more evident than in looking at the issue of ecological devastation on a planetary scale. Human domination of the terrestrial world has become so inescapable that many insist we have left the Holocene and entered a new geological epoch known as the Anthropocene. This new and current geological age is viewed as the period during which human activity has been the dominant influence on climate and the environment.To many it may seem absurd to suggest that the humanities-let alone philosophy-could have anything to say about such an intractably material situation as the contemporary ecological crisis. Surely only science can save us now? Yet, it can be argued that this crisis is not only a technical and scientific crisis, but also a crisis of human collective activity, or politics, and so our best response to this crisis depends crucially upon human commitment and imagination.The paradox of the current Anthropocene age is this: human agency is now responsible for fundamentally transforming the biogeochemistry of the earth, while at the same time, we seem incapable of altering the shape of our collective activities. We are tragically responsible, and we can't seem to do anything about it.Might this paradox seem intractable only because basic ontological, ethical, and aesthetic assumptions have gone unquestioned? If so, doesn't this cry out for a philosophical response?In this talk, philosophy professor Jacob Sherman discusses the role that philosophy might play both in diagnosing deeper causes of our contemporary crisis, and in helping to empower our search for new ways of imagining the human being as a mutually enhancing member of the Earth community.Jacob Sherman is Associate Professor and Chair of Philosophy and Religion at CIIS and Chair of the program in Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness at CIIS. He received his PhD in philosophical theology from the University of Cambridge. He taught previously at King's College London and from 2014-17 held a visiting appointment as University Lecturer in Philosophy of Religion at the University of Cambridge.By training a philosopher, theologian, and religious studies scholar, he is the author of Partakers of the Divine: Contemplation and the Practice of Philosophy, and editor, with Jorge Ferrer, of The Participatory Turn: Spirituality, Mysticism, Religious Studies. The author of over two dozen articles, essays, and reviews, his writings have appeared in publications such as The Journal of the American Academy of Religion, Modern Theology, and the International Journal of Philosophy and Theology. Frontiers of Plant Human Communication: Overcoming Physicocentrism Linda Dayem-Kealey ArchetypalView 2019-04-08 | This presentation is an excerpt from Linda's forthcoming dissertation "Frontiers of Plant-Human Collaboration" (June 2019, UCSC Philosophy), focusing on the concept of physicocentrism in relation to the devas and nature spirits with whom the early Findhorn co-founders collaborated in their garden in Scotland in the early 1960s. With the nature-culture split that is part of modernism, only the physical is considered to be scientifically real, making it difficult to engage seriously with non-physical entities such as devas and nature spirits. The "New Age", of which Findhorn is a part, is reaching toward new ideas but stays rooted in modernist language and concepts that limit its usefulness in a further scientific investigation of devas and nature spirits. Linda introduces Karen Barad's "agential realism", an ethico-onto-epistemology that (among other features) provides a coherent interpretation of quantum physics, thereby overcoming modernist limitations and expanding the notion of what can be considered real. Agential realism includes a notion of the "virtual" as real, which can be utilized to make sense of Findhorn's devas. And Linda points out that agential realism can also include the "transphysical", or spacetimematterings that are enacted according to patterns other than the physical - which is needed to make sense of Findhorn's nature spirits. If the physical is enacted according to a metrical spacetime geometry (which permits measurement), we can also talk about the etheric, which has been hypothesized (by Steiner and others) to match up qualitatively with the non-metrical projective geometry. By overcoming physicocentrism, or the notion that only the physical is real, we can consider working scientifically (based on the concepts of agential realism) with virtual entities such as devas and with transphysical entities such as nature spirits. The virtual, the physical, and the transphysical are not separate from one another but are thoroughly entangled and causally connected.
