In this hand engraving tutorial, I show you exactly how to make Crescent Cuts — a beautiful and useful cut that can be straight or curved.
You’ll learn the full technique: starting the cut upright on the tip of the graver, pushing forward while gradually leaning the graver to one side, then bringing it back upright so you can exit the cut cleanly without plucking or slipping. This gives you a nice tapered beginning and ending.
Whether you're doing straight lines or turning the block to create crescent shapes, this method gives you smooth, controlled results. Perfect for borders, patterns, and adding elegance to your engraving work.
Great for beginners and intermediate engravers looking to improve their graver control and line quality.

In this immersive, real-time hand engraving study session, I engrave a full copper practice plate from start to finish using an onglette graver. Start to finish this took me about 50 minutes - aim to take twice as long to engrave yours.
Muscle memory and sensitivity develop over time; give yourself the time to go through this process of mind muscle connection by going slowwww.
Watch as I engrave parallel straight lines, rings of circles, and a detailed line work pattern made up of lots of tiny individual straight cuts. This is a long-form ASMR-style engraving session (50 minutes of engraving footage) perfect for learning by watching. Throughout the video I drop important key notes and tips — pay close attention to the commentary for technique, graver control, pressure, angles, and common mistakes to avoid.
Ideal for beginners and intermediate engravers looking to improve their straight lines, curves, and overall control.
Key Things to Remember: - Take your time - Go slow - Go slower than that - A bit slower - Keep your thumbs together - Use Kerosene - Keep your other hand out of the danger zone

This is a basic how-to video all about Drawing & Scribing for traditional hand engraving. In this tutorial, we use markers, rulers, dividers and a scribe to get the initial framework for laying out a design and drawing it directly on metal with ink. Then going over those ink lines with a scribe so that we can take a graver to the scribe lines and engrave the design. This step is the essential foundation for any hand engraving project — getting clean, accurate scribe lines on the metal before you start cutting with the graver is 1/2 of the process for any engraving project.
Watch until the end for a little show & tell to see some of my VERY FIRST practice plates and my initial slipping era.

Welcome back! It's finally time to start engraving :DD This episode includes setting up our first practice plates in our engraving blocks or turn tables by using prongs, tension or dop wax. Correct engraving posture and the grip for holding and using a graver. We go over lots of do's & don't when it comes to making your first cuts as well as common pitfalls and habits that are common for beginners. We start with engraving some straight lines and plucking the graver out of each cut, and later move onto scribing and engraving circles. This episode is jam-packed with important details and tips that will make all the difference when you're first getting started. The biggest things are going to be to not rush, and focus on not making your cuts too deep. We're not gouging out metal - we're shaving off thin slivers. It's a long one, so be sure to check the timestamps and come back to this episode are you start engraving if you run into any problems.

In this final episode of the Onglette graver series, we're sharpening and polishing our Onglette graver by hand! We'll hold the graver with the face down on the sharpening stone and carefully slide it back and forth without allowing any fluctuations in the angle. We bring the face of the graver to a 45-degree angle and stop once the face becomes one single clean facet. Then we scrape the burr off using a wood block and carefully polish the belly of the graver on the polishing pad by pulling it along the heel — being very careful not to round off the sharp tip we just created. Take your time with this step. If you get stumped, take some clear photos and send them to the Discord server — I'm always there ready to help you!

The heel is 1 or 2 facets right on the underbelly side of the tip of the graver. The mechanics of this is to be able to push the graver smoothly across the surface of metal without the graver digging straight down and getting stuck. The heel creates a sort of “flat spot” so that the graver can be held at an angle while being pushed forward, but the heel is able to remove a smooth/level piece of metal. Heels come in all shapes and sizes on all kinds of gravers. Remember, you fit the tool to the job. This graver is an all-round smooth, easy to hold and use graver — with good slip control, time saving because of the general length, and a wonderful graver for beginners. While this step may be a bit challenging to get it right, take your time and keep going back and forth on the sharpening stone until those two facets are even.

This is the foundational process we’ll use for making almost all gravers going forward (with minor adjustments depending on the style/type of graver). While this graver is now assembled, it's not ready to use until we add the heel & sharpen it.
In this episode: • Marking guidelines with a Sharpie • Grinding the tip • Measuring and cutting the proper graver length • Grinding off the back and shaping the tang • Fitting and installing the handle using a vise and hammer
